Detection And Characterization Of Antibiotic Resistance Plasmids In Cheney Biosolids, Gaayathiri Paramasivam
Detection And Characterization Of Antibiotic Resistance Plasmids In Cheney Biosolids, Gaayathiri Paramasivam
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
"Biosolids are organic matter produced at the end of sewage treatment process. It has been shown that during sewage treatment, resistant bacteria are selected because of the presence of antibiotics and their byproducts. These resistant bacteria are more likely to transfer resistance genes to other bacteria. In the current study, we examined Cheney biosolids for the presence of drug resistant bacteria and the role of these bacteria in transfer of resistance genes to others. We screened 100 bacteria for drug resistance and found that 68% of the isolates were resistant to two or more drugs tested. Plasmids were separated from …

Assessment Of The Hatchery Kokanee (Oncorhynchus Nerka) Release Program In Lake Roosevelt 2009 -- 2012, Alix O. Blake
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
This study determined which kokanee stock performed best in Lake Roosevelt, WA: Lake Whatcom, Meadow Creek, or F1 mixed stock. The F1 mixed stock was created by collecting eggs from Lake Whatcom, Meadow Creek and non-marked kokanee that returned to Hawk Creek and raising them to the residualized smolt stage at the Spokane Tribal hatchery for release back into Lake Roosevelt. Fall spawning run data (2009 – 2012) were analyzed to assess the percentage and sex ratios of each stock returning to spawn in Lake Roosevelt. We had record returns of hatchery kokanee in 2009 (n = 8,895) and 2010 …
Containing The Dragon: The Rise Of Chinese Military Power And Its Effect On Us Foreign Policy, Robert William Eberhart
Containing The Dragon: The Rise Of Chinese Military Power And Its Effect On Us Foreign Policy, Robert William Eberhart
Honors Theses
In 2001, John Mearsheimer made a prediction that according to his theory of offensive realism, if Chinese military power continued to grow, the US would increase its military presence in East Asia in order to contain growth of Chinese power. Now in 2013, US military presence is slowly rising, appearing to prove Mearsheimer’s prediction. Therefore the question that needs to be asked is can offensive realism explain the current status of US-Chinese relations. By examining the changes in Chinese military developments by comparing unit sizes and amounts to the changes in military weapons developments, an integration rate can be formed …
The Refuge Of Fools, Merrill Lee Girardeau
The Refuge Of Fools, Merrill Lee Girardeau
Honors Theses
The main character of The Refitge of Fools, Mar>’ Canon Israel, resembles H.L. Mencken's iconoclast. Mencken v\Tites that an iconoclast uses an instinct that supersedes the logic of religion, a logic he calls "the refuge of fools." Known as M.C., Mar\- Canon attends a private Christian high school in the South. Instinct acute, however, she regards the "God concept" with extreme suspicion. The Refuge of Fools visits her junior year of high school, each chapter taken from a month of that year. Her lifelong friend Palmer wants to change the nature of their friendship but cannot decide whether to …
Theorizing Factors Influencing Missile Transfers: A Case Study If Sino-Iranian Missile Transfers And Implications For Regional Security, Paul Alexander Kynerd
Theorizing Factors Influencing Missile Transfers: A Case Study If Sino-Iranian Missile Transfers And Implications For Regional Security, Paul Alexander Kynerd
Honors Theses
Scholars suggest missiles have become the weapon of choice in modem warfare. Missiles are effective against a variety of targets, can travel long distances, and can decrease the need for troops to be engaged in conflict. Nations unable to mobilize large amounts of troops may depend on missiles to equalize military capabilities. Missile stockpiling also serves as a conflict deterrent. What factors influence missile sales between nations and what are the implications of those sales on regional security? This research broadly analyzes the effects of political, socioeconomic, conflict, temporal, and regional factors on global missile sales between 1980 and 2009, …

Improving Brain–Machine Interface Performance By Decoding Intended Future Movements, Francis R. Willett, Aaron J. Suminski, Andrew H. Fagg, Nicholas G. Hatsopoulos
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Objective. A brain–machine interface (BMI) records neural signals in real time from a subject's brain, interprets them as motor commands, and reroutes them to a device such as a robotic arm, so as to restore lost motor function. Our objective here is to improve BMI performance by minimizing the deleterious effects of delay in the BMI control loop. We mitigate the effects of delay by decoding the subject's intended movements a short time lead in the future. Approach. We use the decoded, intended future movements of the subject as the control signal that drives the movement of our BMI. This …
Key Indicators Of Language Impact On Identity Formation In Belarus, Tony Brown
Key Indicators Of Language Impact On Identity Formation In Belarus, Tony Brown
Russian Language Journal
In 1986, a group of 28 intellectuals from Belarus wrote the following brief letter to then-General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev: “Language is the soul of a nation, the supreme manifestation of its cultural identity, the foundation of its true spiritual life. A nation lives and flourishes in history while its language lives. With the decline of the language, culture withers and atrophies, the nation ceases to exist as a historical organism” (Letters to Gorbachev, 1987).

Evaluating Biodegradable Containers As Alternatives To Plastic Pots, Renee L. Conneway
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Marked improvements in the sustainability of the horticulture industry have occurred over the last few decades. Movement towards better management practices in areas such as pesticide (IPM), fertilizer application and water usage characterizes today's industry. However, several obstacles have to be overcome for true long-term sustainability of the ornamental horticulture industry. One of these obstacles is the abundant use of plastics in the horticulture industry. This research focused on reducing the industry's plastic waste stream by evaluating the effects of biodegradable pots on plant growth parameters and substrate chemistry, as well as characteristics of biodegradable pots such as strength and …
Surfaces Modulate Β-Amyloid Peptide Aggregation Associated With Alzheimer's Disease., Elizabeth Anne Yates
Surfaces Modulate Β-Amyloid Peptide Aggregation Associated With Alzheimer's Disease., Elizabeth Anne Yates
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
A hallmark of Alzheimer's disease, a late onset neurodegenerative disease, is the presence of neuritic amyloid plaques deposited within the brain composed of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptide aggregates. Aβ can aggregate into a variety of polymorphic aggregate structures under different chemical environments, specifically affected by the presence of differing surfaces. There are several point mutations clustered around the central hydrophobic core of Aβ (E22G Arctic mutation, E22K Italian mutation, D23N Iowa mutation, and A21G Flemish mutation). These mutations are associated with hereditary diseases ranging from almost pure cerebral amyloid angiopathy to typical Alzheimer's disease pathology with both plaques and tangles. To …

Appraisal Theory: Old And New Questions, Phoebe C. Ellsworth
Articles
I describe my current thinking on two old questions—the causal role of appraisals and the relationship of appraisal theories to basic emotions theories and constructivist theories, and three (sort of) new questions—the completeness of appraisals, the role of language, and the development of automaticity in emotional responses.
Applying A Mixed Methods Approach To Understanding And Evaluating The Effects Of Family Treatment Among Sexually Abusive Youth, Jamie R. Yoder
Applying A Mixed Methods Approach To Understanding And Evaluating The Effects Of Family Treatment Among Sexually Abusive Youth, Jamie R. Yoder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Families are frequently identified as a risk for supporting and perpetuating sexually abusive behavior among youth. Traditionally, the field has focused on deficits of families rather than considering them as a resource to promote change. Although emerging literature strongly argues the need to target families in the healing process, treatment initiatives rarely follow suite, and research has failed to comprehensively document the effectiveness of family-inclusive treatment. Knowing there are several gaps in literature, the current study was conducted to investigate the process of engagement in treatment, understand the nuances of family treatment, and to uncover positive outcomes associated with family …

Many zygotes and spores of brown algae are photosensitive and establish a developmental axis in accordance with directional light cues. Ectocarpus siliculosus is being advanced as a genetic and genomic model organism for investigating brown alga development, and this report investigates photopolarization of the growth axis of mitospores. When exposed to unidirectional light, mitospores photopolarized and established a growth axis such that germination was preferentially localized to the shaded hemisphere of the spore body. The roles of the microtubule cytoskeleton and endomembrane cycling in the photopolarization process were investigated using pharmacological agents. Disruption of microtubule dynamics progressively reduced the percentage …

One of the most distinctive features of redbuds, Cercis canadensis, the 2013 VNPS Wildflower of the Year, is its production of flowers on mature trunks and major branches, a habit termed cauliflory. Redbud flowers also form on young, one-year old twigs; as explained below, twig- and trunk-borne flowers are parts of a single developmental continuum; twigs bearing flowers eventually becoming trunks and large branches that continue to bear flowers.

The Structure Of Allophanate Hydrolase From Granulibacter Bethesdensis Provides Insights Into Substrate Specificity In The Amidase Signature Family, Yi Lin, Martin St. Maurice
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Allophanate hydrolase (AH) catalyzes the hydrolysis of allophanate, an intermediate in atrazine degradation and urea catabolism pathways, to NH3 and CO2. AH belongs to the amidase signature family, which is characterized by a conserved block of 130 amino acids rich in Gly and Ser and a Ser-cis-Ser-Lys catalytic triad. In this study, the first structures of AH from Granulibacter bethesdensis were determined, with and without the substrate analogue malonate, to 2.2 and 2.8 Å, respectively. The structures confirm the identity of the catalytic triad residues and reveal an altered dimerization interface that is not conserved …

We discuss open-loop control development and simulation results for a newly-developed cyber-physical system (CPS) used as a semi-active, above-knee prosthesis. The control signal of our CPS consists of two hydraulic valve settings that control a linear cylinder actuator and provide torque to the prosthetic knee. We develop open-loop control using biogeography-based optimization (BBO), which is a recently developed evolutionary algorithm. The research contributes to the field of cyber-physical systems by showing that it is possible to find effective open-loop control signals for our newly proposed semi-active hydraulic knee prosthesis through a dual-system optimization process which includes both human and robot …

Detection Of Prostate Specific Antigen In Serum At The Femto-Gram Per Milliliter Level Using The Intrinsic Amplification Of A Field-Effect Enzymatic Immuno-Sensing System, Jiapeng Wang, Siu-Tung Yau
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Ultrasensitive detection of prostate specific antigen (PSA) has been achieved by applying the field-effectenzymatic detection (FEED) technique to the sandwich immuno-sensing technique. The voltage-controlled intrinsic amplification provided by FEED enabled the detection of PSA contained in serumon the femto-gram/mL level. Two electrochemical approaches used to obtain the amperometric detec-tion signal resulted in similar detection limits and sensitivities. The lowest PSA detection limit achievedwas 27 fg mL-1. The high selectivity of the detection system was reflected in the fact that PSA detectionwas successful on the fg mL-1level, where biological substances other than PSA had a 1-million-foldhigher concentration. Electron transfer through the …

Voltage-Controlled Enzyme-Catalyzed Glucose–Gluconolactone Conversion Using A Field-Effect Enzymatic Detector, Siu-Tung Yau, Yan Xu, Yang Song, Ye Feng, Jiapeng Wanga
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
The field-effect enzymatic detection (FEED) technique was used to control the kinetics of the enzymatic conversion of glucose to gluconolactone. The glucose–gluconolactone conversion occurring at an enzyme-immobilized electrode, a well-studied process, was confirmed using mass spectrometry. Electrochemical studies showed that the glucose oxidation current depends on the gating voltage VG and the ion concentration of the sample solution. Additionally, the depletion of glucose in the sample also showed a dependence on VG. FEED was used to detect H2O2 on the zepto-molar level in order to show the ultrasensitive detection capability of the technique. These results, while providing evidence for the …
Freeze Tolerance Conferred By Transgenic Expression Of Late Embryogenesis Abundant Protein In Insect Cells, Alyssa N. Walser
Freeze Tolerance Conferred By Transgenic Expression Of Late Embryogenesis Abundant Protein In Insect Cells, Alyssa N. Walser
Masters Theses
Anhydrobiotic organisms such as the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana have developed strategies to survive and thrive under conditions of limited water availability. One strategy is the accumulation of late embryo genesis abundant (LEA) proteins. Cells of Drosophila melanogaster (Kc167), which had previously been genetically modified to express a group 1 LEA protein (LEA1.3) found in A. franciscana, were used to test the impact of water stress due to freezing to -80°C. Two different freezing devices were used to determine the impact of the freezing protocol on the viability of cells after freezing and thawing. The first method used a 12-well …

Separating The Whites From The Chaff: Whiteness, Blackness, Racial Exclusion In The Midwest Agrarian Mind, Philip Mohr
Separating The Whites From The Chaff: Whiteness, Blackness, Racial Exclusion In The Midwest Agrarian Mind, Philip Mohr
Masters Theses
This thesis approaches the construction of race through the vantage of one agrarian magazine, the Prairie Farmer. It analyzes the rhetoric of the people who wrote for this magazine to distinguish changing attitudes toward whiteness and blackness in the rural and agricultural Midwest from the end of the Civil War to the Great Migration. While whiteness was equated with what the Prairie Farmer saw as the active, progressive farmer, blackness was associated with stupidity, laziness, and threat to property. From this, the thesis argues we can build a base of knowledge from which to analyze the roots of racism …
