Comparative Analysis Of English Language Learners' Experiences In Public School At The Third And Eighth Grade Levels, Amanda Lenox, Kristin Liewald

Honors Capstones

The field of education is one that endeavors constant change of fluctuating degrees. Most recently and drastically, the educational field has experienced and responded to changes in the cultural and linguistic diversity that is rapidly increasing in classrooms across the United States. Congruently, current legislation holds both educators and students accountable for their standardized performance and accomplishments, although teachers of ethnically diverse students are not required to be certified in the teaching of these learners. As a result, it was the purpose of this study to identify and analyze the themes evident from a series of observations and interviews conducted …

Prevalence Of Vitamin D Deficiency In An Ethnic African Urban Obstetric Population In An Equatorial City Hospital, Raj Hasmukh Dodia Jan 2013

Prevalence Of Vitamin D Deficiency In An Ethnic African Urban Obstetric Population In An Equatorial City Hospital, Raj Hasmukh Dodia

Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynecology

Introduction: Low Vitamin D levels in pregnancy have been associated with an increased risk of gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, bacterial vaginosis, preterm birth, disordered fetal skeletal homeostasis, and impaired offspring lung health. As a result, current public health advice in several countries is to universally supplement Vitamin D during pregnancy. Data regarding the Vitamin D levels of the ethnic obstetric population in Kenya are not available; hence recommendations for Vitamin D supplementation have no scientific basis. Objectives of study: This research was carried out to determine the prevalence of deficiency of Vitamin D in ethnic African obstetric patients who had delivered …

The Adolescent Girls Vulnerability Index: Guiding Strategic Investment In Uganda, Sajeda Amin, Karen Austrian, Michelle Chau, Kimberly Glazer, Eric P. Green, David Stewart, Marie Stoner

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Adolescence (from the ages of 10 to 19 years) is a critical stage of human development during which children experience rapid social, physical, psychological, and emotional changes on the path from childhood to adulthood. The decisions that are made during this period of life affect not only the individual well-being of young people, but also the well-being of the entire society. The Adolescent Girls Multilevel Vulnerability Index (AGI) was developed based on a growing recognition of the need to channel resources to vital—yet highly vulnerable and vastly underserved—populations of adolescent girls in Uganda specifically, and the East and Southern Africa …

Smooth Local Subspace Projection For Nonlinear Noise Reduction, David Chelidze Jan 2013

Smooth Local Subspace Projection For Nonlinear Noise Reduction, David Chelidze

Mechanical, Industrial & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Many nonlinear or chaotic time series exhibit an innate broad spectrum, which makes noise reduction difficult. Local projective noise reduction is one of the most effective tools. It is based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and works for both map-like and continuously sampled time series. However, POD only looks at geometrical or topological properties of data and does not take into account the temporal characteristics of time series. Here, we present a new smooth projective noise reduction method. It uses smooth orthogonal decomposition (SOD) of bundles of reconstructed short-time trajectory strands to identify smooth local subspaces. Restricting trajectories to these …

Discovery Of Novel Prognostic Biomarkers Of Acute Kidney Injury, Joseph Lee Alge Jan 2013

Discovery Of Novel Prognostic Biomarkers Of Acute Kidney Injury, Joseph Lee Alge

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Background: Acute kidney injury is a cause of significant morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients. Prognostic biomarkers that predict at the time of diagnosis which patients will develop severe AKI and its complications would facilitate timely intervention and could lead to improved outcomes. The urinary proteome is a logical source of candidate biomarkers of kidney injury. Methods: Urine was collected from rodents and human subjects with AKI secondary to diverse etiologies, including cardiac surgery, ischemic/hypoxic injury, and nephrotoxicity. Shotgun proteomics was used to identify candidate biomarkers in four separate discovery phase experiments. These candidates were then verified in a larger …

Recovering Local Neural Tract Directions And Reconstructing Neural Pathways In High Angular Resolution Diffusion Mri, Ning Cao Jan 2013

Recovering Local Neural Tract Directions And Reconstructing Neural Pathways In High Angular Resolution Diffusion Mri, Ning Cao

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an imaging technique to visualize internal structures of the body. Diffusion MRI is an MRI modality that measures overall diffusion effect of molecules in vivo and non-invasively. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is an extended technique of diffusion MRI. The major application of DTI is to measure the location, orientation and anisotropy of fiber tracts in white matter. It enables non-invasive investigation of major neural pathways of human brain, namely tractography. As spatial resolution of MRI is limited, it is possible that there are multiple fiber bundles within the same voxel. However, diffusion tensor model is …

Context Aware Privacy Preserving Clustering And Classification, Nirmal Thapa

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

Data are valuable assets to any organizations or individuals. Data are sources of useful information which is a big part of decision making. All sectors have potential to benefit from having information. Commerce, health, and research are some of the fields that have benefited from data. On the other hand, the availability of the data makes it easy for anyone to exploit the data, which in many cases are private confidential data. It is necessary to preserve the confidentiality of the data. We study two categories of privacy: Data Value Hiding and Data Pattern Hiding. Privacy is a huge concern …

A Novel Computational Framework For Transcriptome Analysis With Rna-Seq Data, Yin Hu Jan 2013

A Novel Computational Framework For Transcriptome Analysis With Rna-Seq Data, Yin Hu

Theses and Dissertations--Computer Science

The advance of high-throughput sequencing technologies and their application on mRNA transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) have enabled comprehensive and unbiased profiling of the landscape of transcription in a cell. In order to address the current limitation of analyzing accuracy and scalability in transcriptome analysis, a novel computational framework has been developed on large-scale RNA-seq datasets with no dependence on transcript annotations. Directly from raw reads, a probabilistic approach is first applied to infer the best transcript fragment alignments from paired-end reads. Empowered by the identification of alternative splicing modules, this framework then performs precise and efficient differential analysis at automatically detected …

Articles

The synthesis and biochemical activities of novel water-soluble β-lactam analogues of combretastatin A-4 are described. The first series of compounds investigated, β-lactam phosphate esters 7a, 8a and 9a, exhibited potent antiproliferative activity and caused microtubule disruption in human breast carcinoma-derived MCF-7 cells. They did not inhibit tubulin polymerisation in vitro, indicating that biotransformation was necessary for their antiproliferative and tubulin binding effects in MCF-7 cells. The second series of compounds, β-lactam amino acid amides (including 10k and 11l) displayed potent antiproliferative activity in MCF-7 cells, disrupted microtubules in MCF-7 cells and also inhibited the polymerisation of …

Forest Transitions And Environmental Policy In The Western Ghats Of India, Melanie Phillips Jan 2013

Forest Transitions And Environmental Policy In The Western Ghats Of India, Melanie Phillips

Theses

For several decades the amount of forest cover worldwide has followed a declining trend. Recently, developing countries such as India have begun social and political programs to support an opposite trend of forest restoration. The cause of this positive forest transition varies in each nation. This study shows the impact of recent developments in state-local forestry management programs on forest cover in the Western Ghats of India from 2001-2011. Using GIS and remote sensing technology this study analyzes recent patterns in forest extent and health in seven districts within the Western Ghats. Currently there is a serious lack of quantitative …

Is Circumcision Legal?, Peter W, Adler Jan 2013

Is Circumcision Legal?, Peter W, Adler

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

An important, divisive, and unanswered question of American law - and indeed of international law - is whether it is legal to circumcise healthy boys. American medical association and experts assert that circumcision is a common, safe, and relatively painlesss procedure with many medical benefits that exceed the risks. They argue that insurance should pay for it. Some religious organizations argue that circumcision is a sacred religious ritual. In any event, proponents claim that parents have a general and religious right to make the circumcision decision. They can point to the fact that no physician has ever been held liable …

Probiotic Strains For Shellfish Aquaculture: Protection Of Eastern Oyster, Crassostrea Virginica, Larvae And Juveniles Againsl Bacterial Challenge, Murni Karim, Wenjing Zhao, David C. Rowley, David R. Nelson, Marta Gomez-Chiarri

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

Bacterial pathogens, including several Vibrio spp. and Roseovarius crassostreae, cause severe mortality of larval and juvenile eastern oysters. The introduction of beneficial bacterial isolates in oyster hatcheries and nurseries for the biocontrol of bacterial diseases is a good alternative to the use of antibiotics. The goal of this study was to screen and characterize marine bacterial isolates as potential agents to prevent larval and juvenile mortality by the oyster pathogens Vibrio tubiashii and R. crassostreae. Screening of bacterial isolates from Rhode Island marine organisms and environment using agar-based assay methods for detection of antimicrobial activity against oyster pathogens led …

Muscle Growth In Teleost Fish Is Regulated By Factors Utilizing The Activin Ii B Receptor, Michael P. Phelps, Ian M. Jaffe, Terence M. Bradley

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

The activin type IIB receptor (Acvr2b) is the cell surface receptor for multiple transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) superfamily ligands, several of which regulate muscle growth in mammals. To investigate the role of the Acvr2b signaling pathway in the growth and development of skeletal muscle in teleost fish, transgenic rainbow trout (RBT; Oncorhynchus mykiss) expressing a truncated form of the acvr2b-2a (acvr2b▵) in muscle tissue were produced. High levels of acvr2b▵ expression were detected in the majority of P1 transgenic fish. Transgenic P1 trout developed enhanced, localized musculature in both the epaxial and hypaxial regions …

Transmission Of Narratives Among Former Soviet Union (Fsu) ÉMigréS, Marina Kantarovich

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study explores the stories told by Former Soviet Union (FSU) Jewish émigré parents to their American-reared children about their experiences of life in the FSU and their reasons for emigration. Specifically, this study examines whether the stories transmitted reflect the mass oppression, suppression and state-sponsored brutality exacted upon Soviet Jews. The sample consisted of twelve participants between the ages of 18-35, all of whom had at least one parent who emigrated from the FSU. The analysis revealed the following noteworthy findings: 1) All twelve participants inherited stories depicting the collective discrimination that Jews were forced to endure under …
