Techniques To Quantify The Size Of Protein Colloids In Amyloid Fiber Formation, Jonathan R. Anson, Chia-Hung Lu, Lingwen Cui, Xiaojing Yang, Shaohua Xu
Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Faculty Publications
A new method for the analysis of protein colloidal diameter has been developed using three existing protein concentration quantification techniques, absorption at 280 nm, colloidal gold assay, and DC protein assay. Protein colloids are formed in the process of aggregation and are thought to be intermediates in protein self-assembly and formation of amyloid fiber. Deposition of the protein fibers in tissues leads to numerous human diseases including Alzheimer’s. Lysozyme was incubated at pH 2.0, 55°C, an environment conducive to amyloid fiber formation. The protein colloids present in the supernatant of the samples after centrifugation were studied over a time course …
Pursuing And Completing An Undergraduate Computing Degree From A Female Perspective: A Quantitative And Qualitative Approach, Scott Ragsdale
Pursuing And Completing An Undergraduate Computing Degree From A Female Perspective: A Quantitative And Qualitative Approach, Scott Ragsdale
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
The computing profession in the United States would benefit from an increasingly diverse workforce, specifically a larger female presence, because a more gender-balanced workforce would likely result in better technological solutions to difficulties in many areas of American life. However, to achieve this balance, more women with a solid educational foundation in computing need to enter the computing workplace. Yet a common problem is most colleges and universities offering computer-related degrees have found it challenging to attract females to their programs. Also, the women who begin a computing major have shown a higher tendency than men to leave the major. …
Construction Of A Conceptualization Of Personal Knowledge Within A Knowledge Management Perspective Using Grounded Theory Methodology, Eric M. Straw
Construction Of A Conceptualization Of Personal Knowledge Within A Knowledge Management Perspective Using Grounded Theory Methodology, Eric M. Straw
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
The current research used grounded theory methodology (GTM) to construct a conceptualization of personal knowledge within a knowledge management (KM) perspective. The need for the current research was based on the use of just two categories of knowledge, explicit and tacit, within KM literature to explain diverse characteristics of personal knowledge. The construct of tacit knowledge has often been explicated and debated in KM literature. The debate over tacit knowledge arose from the complex epistemological roots of tacit knowing and the construct of tacit knowledge popularized by organizational knowledge creation theory. The ongoing debate over tacit knowledge in KM literature …
Application Of A Layered Hidden Markov Model In The Detection Of Network Attacks, Lawrence Taub
Application Of A Layered Hidden Markov Model In The Detection Of Network Attacks, Lawrence Taub
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Network-based attacks against computer systems are a common and increasing problem. Attackers continue to increase the sophistication and complexity of their attacks with the goal of removing sensitive data or disrupting operations. Attack detection technology works very well for the detection of known attacks using a signature-based intrusion detection system. However, attackers can utilize attacks that are undetectable to those signature-based systems whether they are truly new attacks or modified versions of known attacks. Anomaly-based intrusion detection systems approach the problem of attack detection by detecting when traffic differs from a learned baseline. In the case of this research, the …
Model Based Adaptive Control Of Underwater Vehicles For Improved Ocean Science, Christopher J. Mcfarland
Model Based Adaptive Control Of Underwater Vehicles For Improved Ocean Science, Christopher J. Mcfarland
Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Fellowship Reports
Recent advances in unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) capabilities have enabled oceanographic scientists to consider addressing research topics previously thought impractical or impossible. One such topic is the validation of high resolution computer models; long term deployments of coordinated UUV survey teams have been proposed to collect the density of measurements required. Another topic is the study of biological diversity in volatile areas; UUV intervention/sampling deployments have been proposed because of the inherent risks. In general, providing a high density of high accuracy measurements requires passing many targets as quickly and closely as possible. Similarly, efficacy for intervention/sampling deployments requires agile …

A Predictive Model For Soil Seed Bank Outcomes In The Pyrenophora Semeniperda-Bromus Tectorum Pathosystem, Phil Stewart Allen, Susan E. Meyer, Julie Beckstead
A Predictive Model For Soil Seed Bank Outcomes In The Pyrenophora Semeniperda-Bromus Tectorum Pathosystem, Phil Stewart Allen, Susan E. Meyer, Julie Beckstead
Biology Faculty Scholarship
Pyrenophora semeniperda is abundant in soil seed banks of Bromus tectorum, where it kills a fraction of seeds throughout the year. The pathogen engages in a race with host seeds for endosperm resources; the pathogen success is negatively correlated with seed germination speed. We developed a deterministic model to predict pathosystem outcomes (seed death versus seed escape), using seed bank data from 80 sites collected over a 13-year period. The response variable (killed seeds in the spring seed bank) was regressed on multiple predictor variables (pathogen and host densities at seed dispersal, amount and timing of precipitation). Increased mortality …
Beyond Abortion: Why The Personhood Movement Implicates Reproductive Choice, Jonathan Will
Beyond Abortion: Why The Personhood Movement Implicates Reproductive Choice, Jonathan Will
Journal Articles
In 2008, an amendment was proposed to the Colorado Constitution that sought to attach the rights and protections associated with legal “personhood” to any human being from the moment of fertilization. Although the initiative was defeated, it sparked a nation-wide Personhood Movement that has spurred similar efforts at the federal level and in over a dozen states. Personhood advocates choose terms like “fertilization,” or phrases such as “human being at any stage of development,” to identify the “person”-defining moment in the reproductive process, and these designations have profound implications for reproductive choice. Proponents are outspoken in their desire to outlaw …

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia [CLL] is the most common adult leukemia and is heterogeneous in clinical presentation. CLL cases present with various chromosomal aberrations, including 11q23, 14q32, 17p, and trisomy 12, with the most common abnormality being deletion of 13q14 [1]. Although monoallelic deletion of 13q14 is common, there is a subset of patients who have complete nullisomy at 13q14, a locus that has been hypothesized to contribute to CLL pa thogenesis [2] due to loss of tumor suppressors [DLEU and miR-15a/16-1].We hypothesized that deletion of both copies of 13q14 would lead to uncontrollable proliferation …

Climate gradients shape spatial variation in the richness and composition of plant communities. Given future predicted changes in climate means and variability, and likely regional variation in the magnitudes of these changes, it is important to determine how temporal variation in climate influences temporal variation in plant community structure. Here, we evaluated how species richness, turnover, and composition of grassland plant communities responded to interannual variation in precipitation by synthesizing long-term data from grasslands across the United States. We found that mean annual precipitation (MAP) was apositive predictor of species richness across sites, but a positive temporal relationship between annual …
The Aba Guidelines And The Norms Of Capital Defense Representation, Russell Stetler, W. Bradley Wendel
The Aba Guidelines And The Norms Of Capital Defense Representation, Russell Stetler, W. Bradley Wendel
Hofstra Law Review
Courts interpreting effective representation should look at authoritative statements of what counsel ought to do (such as the ABA Guidelines), rather than what may be customary among practitioners whose clients frequently end up on death row. Most cases avoid death sentences, and the standards are established by practitioners who represent capital clients successfully.

Deconstructing Antisocial Personality Disorder And Psychopathy: A Guidelines-Based Approach To Prejudicial Psychiatric Labels, Kathleen Wayland, Sean D. O'Brien
Hofstra Law Review
Prejudicial psychiatric labels such as antisocial personality disorder and psychopathy have an inherently prejudicial effect on courts and juries, particularly in cases involving the death penalty. This article explains how and why these labels are inherently aggravating, and also discusses the mental health literature indicating that they are subjective, unreliable and non-scientific. The authors conclude that no competent defense lawyer would pursue a mitigation case based on such a damaging and scientifically questionable psychiatric label. Further, a proper life history investigation conducted in accordance with the ABA Guidelines on the Appointment and Performance of Defense Counsel in Death Penalty Cases …
Sub1a-Mediated Submergence Tolerance Response In Rice Involves Differential Regulation Of The Brassinosteroid Pathway, Aaron J. Schmitz, Jing J. Folsom, Yusuke Jikamaru, Pamela C. Ronald, Harkamal Walia
Sub1a-Mediated Submergence Tolerance Response In Rice Involves Differential Regulation Of The Brassinosteroid Pathway, Aaron J. Schmitz, Jing J. Folsom, Yusuke Jikamaru, Pamela C. Ronald, Harkamal Walia
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Submergence 1A (SUB1A), is an ethylene response factor (ERF) that confers submergence tolerance in rice (Oryza sativa) via limiting shoot elongation during the inundation period. SUB1A has been proposed to restrict shoot growth by modulating gibberellic acid (GA) signaling.
Our transcriptome analysis indicated that SUB1A differentially regulates genes associated with brassinosteroid (BR) synthesis during submergence. Consistent with the gene expression data, the SUB1A genotype had higher brassinosteroid levels after submergence compared to the intolerant genotype. Tolerance to submergence can be activated in the intolerant genotype by pretreatment with exogenous brassinolide, which results in restricted shoot elongation …

Effect Of Estrogen On Manganese-Induced Toxicity On Embryonic Astrocytes, Tyler T. Huynh, Kimberly J. Baker, Harold L. Komiskey
PCOM Scholarly Works
Manganese (Mn) is a natural trace metal that is essential for many physiological functions in the human body. Astrocytes in the central nervous system are susceptible reservoirs for Mn accumulation. Estrogen, a steroidal hormone, has been shown to mitigate Mn-induced toxicity in cultures of postnatal astrocytes. However, differences in expression/inducibility of glutamate transporters and glutamine synthetase, transmitters, and the natural gonadal steroids and their receptors are known to occur in astrocyte cultures derived from various stages of fetal and postnatal development. Cultures of embryonic (E18) hippocampal astrocytes were examined in this study for the ability of 17 β-estradiol (E2) to …

Compartmentalized Thinking And The Clean Water Act, Christine A. Klein
Compartmentalized Thinking And The Clean Water Act, Christine A. Klein
UF Law Faculty Publications
Modern water pollution control traces back to the Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1972 (Clean Water Act or CWA). Like other statutes of its period, the CWA addresses pollution of a single medium, water. Despite its goal of achieving aquatic integrity, the CWA succumbs to what this article refers to as “compartmentalized thinking.” That is, in drafting the CWA, Congress created a series of regulatory boxes that separate water into constituent parts recognized by law, but not by nature. Undertaking a deeper examination of the fragmentation instinct, this article turns to political theory and cognitive psychology for explanations. In …
Characterisation Of Synthetically Developed Cry1ab Gene In Transgenic Tobacco Chloroplasts, Safdar Ali Mirza, Muhammad Sarwar Khan
Characterisation Of Synthetically Developed Cry1ab Gene In Transgenic Tobacco Chloroplasts, Safdar Ali Mirza, Muhammad Sarwar Khan
Turkish Journal of Botany
Synthetic cry1Ab gene was developed with optimised codons and expressed in the tobacco plastome. Characterisation of the synthetic cry1Ab gene was carried out on homoplasmic transgenic shoots. To purify the homoplasmic shoots, the proliferating heteroplasmic shoots were subjected to various rounds of selection and regeneration on spectinomycin-containing regeneration medium of plant medium. The PCR-screened homoplasmic shoots were placed on MS medium for root induction and proliferation. The functionally expressed CRY protein was detected using ImmunoStrips, and the amount of toxin protein in transplastomic tobacco plants was measured by DAS-ELISA, specific for cry1Ab gene product. The accumulation of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) …

Normalized indentation works, referred to as the total and elastic energy constants, have been shown to be effective in the representation and analysis of experimental load-displacement data. However, their physical meaning, influencing factors, variation range and relationships with other nanomechanical quantities are not precisely known. In this study, the load-displacement data obtained as a result of simulations of elastic and elastoplastic indentations are extensively analyzed to enhance our understanding concerning these two energy based parameters. It has been shown that while the total energy constant describes the state of an indenter tip and the type of contact regime, the elastic …

Species Composition And Forest Structure Of Monte Sano Park, Huntsville, Alabama, Christopher Laliberte
Theses
Monte Sano State Park lies on the edge of the Cumberland Plateau in northern Alabama. The forest is an oak-hickory forest on the tabletop of Monte Sano Mountain, but grades into mixed mesophytic forest along the mid-to-lower escarpment. The landscape was delineated into five categories based on underlying bedrock strata. Several measurements were used to analyze the species composition, diameter breast height (DBH) size class structure, and to determine if discrete communities of trees were present. Species composition varied and was a continuum and the forest was diverse by temperate standards. There were some differences in stand structure in the …

Physiological Responses To Nitrate Stress Of Transgenic Tobacco Plants Harbouring The Cucumber Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase Gene, Huini Xu, Xudong Sun, Xiaoyu Yang, Qinghua Shi, Xiufeng Wang
Turkish Journal of Botany
The physiological responses to nitrate stress of 2 transgenic tobacco lines containing the cucumber mitogen-activated protein kinase (CsNMAPK) gene were investigated. Seed germination rates of the transgenic tobacco lines were higher than that of the wild type (WT) tobacco under 150 mM nitrate treatment. The transgenic seedlings had higher root fresh weight (FW) and dry weight (DW) than the WT plants after 98 mM and 182 mM nitrate treatment. The malondialdehyde (MDA) content, electrolytic leakage (EL), and H_{2}O_2 content were higher in the WT than they were in the transgenic plants after 7-day nitrate stress treatment. The antioxidant enzyme (superoxide …
Two Coiled-Coil Domains Of Chlamydia Trachomatis Inca Affect Membrane Fusion Events During Infection., Erik Ronzone, Fabienne Paumet
Two Coiled-Coil Domains Of Chlamydia Trachomatis Inca Affect Membrane Fusion Events During Infection., Erik Ronzone, Fabienne Paumet
Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers
Chlamydia trachomatis replicates in a parasitophorous membrane-bound compartment called an inclusion. The inclusions corrupt host vesicle trafficking networks to avoid the degradative endolysosomal pathway but promote fusion with each other in order to sustain higher bacterial loads in a process known as homotypic fusion. The Chlamydia protein IncA (Inclusion protein A) appears to play central roles in both these processes as it participates to homotypic fusion and inhibits endocytic SNARE-mediated membrane fusion. How IncA selectively inhibits or activates membrane fusion remains poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed the spatial and molecular determinants of IncA's fusogenic and inhibitory functions. Using …

Toward A Network Model Of Mhc Class Ii-Restricted Antigen Processing., Michael A Miller, Asha Purnima V Ganesan, Laurence C. Eisenlohr
Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers
The standard model of Major Histocompatibility Complex class II (MHCII)-restricted antigen processing depicts a straightforward, linear pathway: internalized antigens are converted into peptides that load in a chaperone dependent manner onto nascent MHCII in the late endosome, the complexes subsequently trafficking to the cell surface for recognition by CD4(+) T cells (TCD4+). Several variations on this theme, both moderate and radical, have come to light but these alternatives have remained peripheral, the conventional pathway generally presumed to be the primary driver of TCD4+ responses. Here we continue to press for the conceptual repositioning of these alternatives toward the center while …

This symposium article suggests that with regard to the work-family conflict, we may have exhausted doctrine’s potential in setting a constitutional foundation for women to be treated as equals in the workplace and requiring that they not be discriminated against in the event that they decide to start a family. For purposes of this piece, those accomplishments constitute the first phase or “first generation” of progress. This article is concerned with how doctrine relates to “second generation” issues arising from the work-family conflict: how to balance work and family once some initial level of equality has been achieved; how to …

Extracting Fuzzy Rules For The Diagnosis Of Breast Cancer, Ali̇ Keleş, Aytürk Keleş
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
About one million women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Breast cancer makes up one-third of all cancer diagnoses in women. Diagnosing breast cancer early is vital for successful treatment. Among the breast cancer screening methods available today, mammography is the most effective, although the low precision rate of breast biopsy caused by mammogram interpretation results in approximately 70% unnecessary biopsies with benign outcomes. The aim of this study was to extract strong diagnostic fuzzy rules for the inference engine of an expert system to be used for the diagnosis of breast cancer. These rules have been extracted through …
