Estimating The Economic Losses From Diseases And Extended Days Open With A Farm-Level Stochastic Model, Di Liang Jan 2013

Estimating The Economic Losses From Diseases And Extended Days Open With A Farm-Level Stochastic Model, Di Liang

Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences

This thesis improved a farm-level stochastic model with Monte Carlo simulation to estimate the impact of health performance and market conditions on dairy farm economics. The main objective of this model was to estimate the costs of seven common clinical dairy diseases (mastitis, lameness, metritis, retained placenta, left displaced abomasum, ketosis, and milk fever) in the U.S. An online survey was conducted to estimate veterinary fees, treatment costs, and producer labor data. The total disease costs were higher in multiparous cows than in primiparous cows. Left displaced abomasum had the greatest costs in all parities ($404.74 in primiparous cows and …

Effects Of Endophyte Infected Fescue Alkaloid Ingestion On Energy Metabolism, Nitrogen Balance, In Situ Feed Degradation, And Ruminal Passage Rates, Anne F. Koontz Jan 2013

Effects Of Endophyte Infected Fescue Alkaloid Ingestion On Energy Metabolism, Nitrogen Balance, In Situ Feed Degradation, And Ruminal Passage Rates, Anne F. Koontz

Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences

The decrease in productivity caused by fescue toxicosis has been estimated to cost the United States livestock industry more than $1 billion per year due to reduced growth and diminished reproductive efficiency. This goal of the research presented in this dissertation is to enhance the knowledge base concerning the underlying physiological changes that occur during fescue toxicosis that lead to reduced intake and weight gain in cattle.

As one of the factors associated with fescue toxicosis is a reduction in feed intake, achieving a consistent and adequate intake of toxins can be a complication. Results from experiment 1demonstrate that ruminal …

Evaluation Of The Effects Of Vitamin K On Growth Performance And Bone Health In Swine, James S. Monegue Jan 2013

Evaluation Of The Effects Of Vitamin K On Growth Performance And Bone Health In Swine, James S. Monegue

Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences

The role of vitamin K in the blood clotting cascade has been well documented. Vitamin K has recently been implicated in improving bone health. The current studies were conducted to determine the effects of vitamin K in diets with and without mycotoxin contaminated corn on growth performance, bone characteristics, and related blood metabolites in pigs from weaning to market. Menadione sodium bisulfite complex (MSBC, 33% vitamin K) was chosen as the source of supplemental vitamin K because it is the most common form fed to swine. Vitamin K was tested at 0, 0.5, and 2.0 ppm in a corn-soybean meal …

Western Universalism And African Homosexualties, Nicholas Kahn-Fogel

Law Faculty Scholarship

This article draws on original historical research, queer theory, communitarian philosophy, and an array of anthropological sources to suggest that efforts by Western liberals to protect practitioners of same-sex intimate conduct in Africa may be relatively unsuccessful and could further endanger the intended beneficiaries of advocacy.

Molecular Staging Of Node Negative Patients With Colorectal Cancer., Terry Hyslop, Scott A Waldman Jan 2013

Molecular Staging Of Node Negative Patients With Colorectal Cancer., Terry Hyslop, Scott A Waldman

Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers

Metastatic disease is the principle cause of death from colorectal cancer. In that context, the most significant indicator of overall survival and therapeutic response to adjuvant chemotherapy is the presence of metastatic tumor cells in regional lymph nodes. Although histopathologic analysis of lymph nodes is central to all colorectal cancer staging paradigms, its prognostic and predictive value is limited. Indeed, about 30% of patients with histopathology-negative lymph nodes (pN0) die from metastatic disease, reflected by microscopic lymph node metastases that are overlooked by standard techniques. These unrecognized tumor cells are especially important when considering racial disparities in outcomes in colorectal …

“Why Don’T We Learn Like This In School?” One Participatory Action Research Collective’S Framework For Developing Policy Thinking, Mayida Zaal, Jennifer Ayala

Department of Teaching and Learning Scholarship and Creative Works

This article explores the ways in which schools and communities can create conditions whereby youth can develop and strengthen policy thinking as they pursue advocacy, action, and participatory policy making. Based on a participatory action research (PAR) project created to address the implications of New Jersey’s high school graduation requirements, this framework engages young people in critical policy analysis. Utilizing PAR as a critical pedagogy, we consider the curricula and structures that could nurture policy thinking, as we involve young people in deep critique, analysis, and knowledge production towards community concerns. We describe four dimensions of policy thinking and propose …

Force Generation By Kinesin And Myosin Cytoskeletal Motor Proteins, F. Jon Kull, Sharyn A. Endow Jan 2013

Force Generation By Kinesin And Myosin Cytoskeletal Motor Proteins, F. Jon Kull, Sharyn A. Endow

Dartmouth Scholarship

Kinesins and myosins hydrolyze ATP, producing force that drives spindle assembly, vesicle transport and muscle contraction. How do motors do this? Here we discuss mechanisms of motor force transduction, based on their mechanochemical cycles and conformational changes observed in crystal structures. Distortion or twisting of the central β-sheet - proposed to trigger actin-induced Pi and ADP release by myosin, and microtubule-induced ADP release by kinesins - is shown in a movie depicting the transition between myosin ATP-like and nucleotide-free states. Structural changes in the switch I region form a tube that governs ATP hydrolysis and Pi release by the motors, …

At War With The Robots: Autonomous Weapon Systems And The Martens Clause, Tyler D. Evans Jan 2013

At War With The Robots: Autonomous Weapon Systems And The Martens Clause, Tyler D. Evans

Hofstra Law Review

This Note examines arguments for preemptively prohibiting the development and use of autonomous weapon systems under the Martens Clause. This Note identifies the Martens Clause as a tenuous but discernible threat to such systems under the Law of Armed Conflict because the Clause's "dictates of the public conscience," interpreted broadly, could provide the grounds upon which to prohibit autonomous weapon systems before such systems even exist -- unlike the more traditional pillars of the Law of Armed Conflict, such as distinction and proportionality, which would require, at the very least, an analysis of the weapon systems' use and effects to …

Loss Of Mef2d Expression Inhibits Differentiation And Contributes To Oncogenesis In Rhabdomyosarcoma Cells., Meiling Zhang, Jamie Truscott, Judith Davie Jan 2013

Loss Of Mef2d Expression Inhibits Differentiation And Contributes To Oncogenesis In Rhabdomyosarcoma Cells., Meiling Zhang, Jamie Truscott, Judith Davie

Articles

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a highly malignant pediatric cancer that is the most common form of soft tissue tumors in children. RMS cells have many features of skeletal muscle cells, yet do not differentiate. Thus, our studies have focused on the defects present in these cells that block myogenesis.

METHODS: Protein and RNA analysis identified the loss of MEF2D in RMS cells. MEF2D was expressed in RD and RH30 cells by transient transfection and selection of stable cell lines, respectively, to demonstrate the rescue of muscle differentiation observed. A combination of techniques such as proliferation assays, scratch assays and soft …

Articles

Seed isoflavone content of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) is a trait of moderate heritablity and an ideal target for marker selection. To date over 20 QTL have been identified underlying this trait among seven populations. The objectives of this study were to identify additional QTL and candidate genes controlling isoflavone content in a set of recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations of soybean grown in two different seasons. Variations of isoflavones namely daidzein, glycitein and genistein contents over two growing seasons and locations suggests that isoflavones are influenced by both genes and environments. Six QTL were identified on five …

Practical Use Of Nitrogen Gas As A Method For Insect Control In Herbaria, Miriam Kritzer Van Zant, Donald Ugent, David A. Lightfoot Jan 2013

Practical Use Of Nitrogen Gas As A Method For Insect Control In Herbaria, Miriam Kritzer Van Zant, Donald Ugent, David A. Lightfoot

Articles

Herbaria are libraries of dried mounted plants used for plant identification, research vouchers and teaching. Herbarium specimens are subject to damage from insects, fungi and bacteria, and must be protected by treatments that kill damaging organisms. Naphthalene, the most common chemical currently used in herbaria, is a class C carcinogen and potential allergen. The aim was to develop an affordable alternative to treatment with persistent hazardous toxins for maintaining dried herbarium specimens. The new method uses ambient temperature nitrogen gas and widely available, valved, nylon, oxygen barrier bags. Nitrogen gas treatment has been shown to be less expensive than freezer …
