In Vitro Evaluation Of Pegylated Mesoporous Mgfe2o4 Magnetic Nanoassemblies (Mmns) For Chemo-Thermal Therapy, Sunil Kumar, Amita Daverey, Niroj Kumar Sahu, Dhirendra Bahadur
Papers in Biotechnology
A size tunable synthesis of mesoporous MgFe2O4 magnetic nanoassemblies (MMNs) through a PEG-diacid mediated polyol method is reported. The PEG-diacid coated MMNs exhibit a significant specific surface area of 92 m2 g‒1 and saturation magnetization of 57 emu g g‒1. These MMNs exhibit a very good colloidal stability in PBS (pH 7.4) with nonappreciable cytotoxicity in mouse fibroblast (L929) and cervical cancer (HeLa) cells. We demonstrate the potential of MMNs as an integrated nanosystem for drug delivery and magnetic hyperthermia (MHT) through in vitro studies. 80% loading efficiency of doxorubicin (DOX) has been achieved due to …

I would like to propose here is precisely the invention of a relation to history and the public sphere of sociality that deconstructs the trauma/nostalgia opposition. The theoretical goal is to separate concrete narrative forms from actual political contents. It follows from the previous point that it might be possible to conceive of historical moments or concrete rhetorical situations in which we need to rely on nostalgic rather than traumatic narratives in order to imagine progressive political change. In these situations, the political task could be the development of a certain “critical nostalgia” that does not try to replace trauma …

Across the Caribbean, the widespread presence of canine remains at archaeological sites from the Saladoid period raises questions about the role of “man’s best friend.” Dog (Canis familiaris) remains have been found located in both refuse middens and burials adjacent to human graves in a number of sites in the French Antilles and Barbuda, West Indies. This paper will critically examine dog remains and discuss the varied duality of the dog’s role in the Saladoid world: from food source to lifelong companion. The importance of dogs within Amerindian sites from Saint Martin, the Guadeloupe archipelago, Martinique and Barbuda …

Barbuda is the sister island to Antigua, located in the Lesser Antilles, West Indies. This island belongs to the Miocene arch of the Lesser Antilles, along with Grande Terre of Guadeloupe, Marie Galante, and Anguilla. Barbuda, notwithstanding its small size and low elevation, has an exceptionally rich past. Recent investigations by a Brooklyn College, City University of New York led team, has discovered evidence of human activity in and around these caves from the Archaic Period down to the present day. The range of activity at these caves begins with scatters of Archaic lithics, through artifacts and faunal material possibly …

The Tools And Technologies Of Transdisciplinary Climate Change Research And Community Empowerment In Barbuda, Sophia Perdikaris, Katherine Hejtmanek, Rebecca Boger, Jennifer Adams, Amy E. Potter, John Mussington
School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications
Focusing on the smaller sister-island of Barbuda, part of the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda, a group of collaborating anthropologists, archaeologists, biologists, education specialists, geographers, and environmental scientists are studying long-term human ecodynamics, the relationship amongst people, place, and the environment from the beginning of the peopling of a place through modern day. Our transdisciplinary approach brings together various field methods, tools and technologies from each field and crosses the boundaries of conventional science. This approach furthers our knowledge of climate change and facilitates practical and sustainable solutions for vulnerable populations.

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings
Feral swine (Sus scrofa) have been introduced throughout North America from various global locations (Mayer and Brisbin 1991). In some cases, sources for feral swine are provided through historical records, but for many newly established populations, the origins of feral swine are not known. Understanding the origins and dispersal patterns of feral swine is an important management consideration, because of the introduction of diseases to new locations, for prosecution of individuals who have trans-ported feral swine across state lines, and for allocating swine removal efforts appropriately to address swine translocations within a state or a management area.

Brown-Headed Cowbird (Molothrus Ater) Response To Pyrotechnics And Lethal Removal In A Controlled Setting, Thomas W. Seamans, Bradley F. Blackwell, Travis L. Devault
Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings
Pyrotechnics have long been used to frighten birds from specific areas but birds might ha-bituate to them. Anecdotal and limited published reports suggest that killing a flock member can reduce habituation. However, little behavioral work has been conducted in this area. We exposed brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater) to noise from either 0.22 caliber blanks or 15-mm pyrotechnics in a series of controlled, cage experiments to determine if killing a flock member increased the time that cowbirds re-spond to pyrotechnics. Cowbirds responded no differently to pyrotechnics following the death of a flock member either before or after habituation to …

Managing Raptors To Reduce Wildlife Strikes At Chicago’S O’Hare Interna-Tional Airport, Travis L. Guerrant, Craig K. Pullins, Scott F. Beckerman, Brian E. Washburn
Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings
Wildlife-aircraft collisions (wildlife strikes) have increased nationally over the past 22 years; denoted in the National Wildlife Strike Database that has been maintained by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) since 1990. Increasing wildlife populations and air traffic coupled with quieter, faster aircraft create a significant risk to aviation safety; the cost to the civil aviation industry is an esti-mated $718 million dollars annually. USDA/APHIS/Wildlife Services provides technical and direct as-sistance to over 785 airports and airbases around the United States, including Chicago’s O’Hare Interna-tional Airport (ORD). At ORD, raptors are the most commonly struck bird guild accounting for 25% of …
Prairie Dog Management And Conservation Benefits, Michael J. Bodenchuk, Thomas D. Halstead, Michael A. Yeary
Prairie Dog Management And Conservation Benefits, Michael J. Bodenchuk, Thomas D. Halstead, Michael A. Yeary
Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings
Prairie dog management has evolved over the decades and present control efforts are often directed at management zones in support of prairie dog or black-footed ferret conservation. The availability of prairie dog management tools has also evolved. We present the efficacy and practicality of specific methods and provide examples of the conservation benefits of prairie dog management. Potential conflicts between conservation efforts and regulatory efforts of multiple agencies are also discussed.

Influence Of Double-Crested Cormorants On Food Web Productivity In Freshwater Ponds, Austin Butts, Kayla Frady, Kate L. Sheehan, Ron J. Johnson, Greg K. Yarrow
Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings
Conflicts with wildlife are often based on the perceptions and concerns of citizens, industries, and managers. The gregarious nature of Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus; DCCO) makes their colonies highly conspicuous. Their feeding habits on forage and commercially important fishes have incited a human/wildlife conflict with this species. Colonies re-use roosting and nesting sites. In these areas guano deposits accumulate and are released into the environment where they have the potential to alter the food web through changes in productivity. This alteration can ultimately change the composition, abundance, and condition of fishery resources.
We investigate the influence of bird-derived …

Assessment of conservation status is a necessary step before management plans can be formulated. Historically such assessments have a strong bias toward vertebrates, particularly endothermic terrestrial vertebrates (i.e. birds and mammals). Invertebrates, by contrast, tend to be ignored, and many insect groups, despite being species rich and reasonably well studied, such as the Odonata (damselflies and dragonflies), have not been assessed or have been assessed only at a broad geographic level (e.g. internationally or continentally). Assessment at a state level recognizes that states often are at the front of regional and local conservation and management planning and implementation. On the …

Law Clinics And Lobbying Restrictions, Marcy L. Karin, Kevin Barry
Journal Articles
“Can law school clinics lobby?” This question has plagued professors for decades but has gone unanswered, until now. This Article situates law school clinics within the labyrinthine law of lobbying restrictions and concludes that clinics may indeed lobby. For ethical, pedagogical, and, ultimately, practical reasons, it is critical that professors who teach in clinics understand these restrictions. This Article offers advice to professors and students on safely navigating this complicated terrain.
Heterogeneity In Platelet Exocytosis, Deepa Jonnalagadda
Heterogeneity In Platelet Exocytosis, Deepa Jonnalagadda
Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry
Platelet exocytosis is essential for hemostasis and for many of its sequelae. Platelets release numerous bioactive molecules stored in their granules enabling them to exert a wide range of effects on the vascular microenvironment. Are these granule cargo released thematically in a context-specific pattern or via a stochastic, kinetically-controlled process? My work describes platelet exocytosis using a systematic examination of platelet secretion kinetics. Platelets were stimulated for increasing times with different agonists (i.e. thrombin, PAR1-agonist, PAR4-agonist, and convulxin) and micro-ELISA arrays were used to quantify the release of 28 distinct α-granule cargo molecules. Agonist potency directly correlated with the speed …
Investigating Therapeutic Options For Lafora Disease Using Structural Biology And Translational Methods, Amanda R. Sherwood
Investigating Therapeutic Options For Lafora Disease Using Structural Biology And Translational Methods, Amanda R. Sherwood
Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry
Lafora disease (LD) is a rare yet invariably fatal form of epilepsy characterized by progressive degeneration of the central nervous and motor systems and accumulation of insoluble glucans within cells. LD results from mutation of either the phosphatase laforin, an enzyme that dephosphorylates cellular glycogen, or the E3 ubiquitin ligase malin, the binding partner of laforin. Currently, there are no therapeutic options for LD, or reported methods by which the specific activity of glucan phosphatases such as laforin can be easily measured. To facilitate our translational studies, we developed an assay with which the glucan phosphatase activity of laforin as …

Faculty & Staff Scholarship
We explore the effects of the peripheral and transmembrane antimicrobial peptides on the lipid bilayer membrane by using the coarse grained Dissipative Particle Dynamics simulations. We study peptide/lipid membrane complexes by considering peptides with various structure, hydrophobicity and peptide/lipid interaction strength. The role of lipid/water interaction is also discussed. We discuss a rich variety of membrane morphological changes induced by peptides, such as pore formation, membrane corrugation and Euler buckling.
Can Spatial Dependence Enhance Industry Sustainability? The Case Of Pasture-Based Beef, Inocencio Rodriguez, Gerard D'Souza, Thomas Griggs
Can Spatial Dependence Enhance Industry Sustainability? The Case Of Pasture-Based Beef, Inocencio Rodriguez, Gerard D'Souza, Thomas Griggs
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
Can sustainability be enhanced by maximizing the sum of private and social benefits from an industry? This might take place, for example, by identifying production options that increase profitability side-by-side with societal goals such as renewable energy production and carbon sequestration, healthier communities, environmental quality, and economic development. We explore this issue for pasture based beef (PBB), a nascent industry where industry profitability, community development, and quality of life can be enhanced by explicitly linking the PBB supply chain spatially and intertemporally, thereby increasing the sum of private and social benefits. We develop a framework based on optimal control theory …

Objective: To compare the responsiveness of six common patient-reported outcomes (PROs) following autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI). Design: A systematic search was conducted to identify reports of PROs following ACI. Study quality was evaluated using the modified Coleman Methodology Score (mCMS). For each outcome score, pre- to postoperative paired Hedge's g effect sizes were calculated with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Random effects meta-analyses were performed to provide a summary response for each PRO at time points (TP) I (<1 year), II (1 year to <2 years), III (2 years to <4 years), IV (>= 4 years), and overall. Results: The mean mCMS for the 42 articles included was 50.9 +/- 9.2. For all evaluated instruments, …1>

Dignity As Perception: Recognition Of The Human Individual And The Individual Animal In Legal Thought, Joseph Vining

'To their murderers these wretched people were not individuals at all. They came in wholesale lots and were treated worse than animals.' This was Telford Taylor, beginning the presentation of the 'Medical Case' at the Nuremberg Trials after the Second World War. The 'Medical Case' was not about genocide or war or the conduct of war. It was about experimentation on human beings; and it was this trial that produced the 'Nuremberg Code', the first control of such treatment of human beings by one another. The word 'individual' came naturally to Taylor the lawyer as a starting point, and with …
A Revisionist History Of Regulatory Capture, William J. Novak
A Revisionist History Of Regulatory Capture, William J. Novak
Book Chapters
The idea of regulatory capture has controlled discussions of economic regulation and regulatory reform for more than two generations. Originating soon after World War II, the so-called capture thesis was an early harbinger of the more general critique of the American regulatory state that dominated the closing decades of the twentieth century. The political ramifications of that broad critique of government continue to be felt today both in the resilient influence of neoliberal policies such as deregulation and privatization as well as in the rise of more virulent and populist forms of anti-statism. Indeed, the capture thesis has so pervaded …

Prejudicial psychiatric labels such as antisocial personality disorder and psychopathy have an inherently prejudicial effect on courts and juries, particularly in cases involving the death penalty. This article explains how and why these labels are inherently aggravating, and also discusses the mental health literature indicating that they are subjective, unreliable and non-scientific. The authors conclude that no competent defense lawyer would pursue a mitigation case based on such a damaging and scientifically questionable psychiatric label. Further, a proper life history investigation conducted in accordance with the ABA Guidelines on the Appointment and Performance of Defense Counsel in Death Penalty Cases …
