Diffusion Of Vitamin B12 Across A Mesoporous Metal Organic Framework, Veronica Valencia Jan 2013

Diffusion Of Vitamin B12 Across A Mesoporous Metal Organic Framework, Veronica Valencia

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

We measure the rate of uptake and the rate of release of a Vitamin B12 solution (dissolved in water) at 2 different temperatures (room temperature and 37°C) by the mesoporous metal organic framework TbMOF-100 at 1-hour intervals using a spectrophotometer. Using the Beer-Lambert law, we calculate the concentration of the stock solution based on the absorbance values obtained with the spectrophotometer. These values allow for the quantification of the initial rate of uptake and the rate of uptake at a random incubation time of the Vitamin B12 by the TbMOF-100. We also calculate the value of the coefficient of diffusion …

Study Of Dieldrin In Coralville Reservoir, Jeremy Smith Jan 2013

Study Of Dieldrin In Coralville Reservoir, Jeremy Smith

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

Using existing experimental data taken over a period of roughly 12 years that documents the concentrations of dieldrin levels in the environment and fatty tissue of the fish, we construct a model of the total dieldrin concentration decline. Comparisons between the experimental data and speculative data can be made using calculus and elements of statistics in order to better understand the movement of dieldrin in the reservoir. Because of the potentially harmful exposure effects of dieldrin to humans as well as the environment, it is important to be able to predict when stability has been restored to the ecosystem.

Acute Activation, Desensitization And Smoldering Activation Of Human Acetylcholine Receptors., Barbara Campling, M.D., Frcpc, Alexander Kuryatov, Jon Lindstrom Jan 2013

Acute Activation, Desensitization And Smoldering Activation Of Human Acetylcholine Receptors., Barbara Campling, M.D., Frcpc, Alexander Kuryatov, Jon Lindstrom

Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers

The behavioral effects of nicotine and other nicotinic agonists are mediated by AChRs in the brain. The relative contribution of acute activation versus chronic desensitization of AChRs is unknown. Sustained "smoldering activation" occurs over a range of agonist concentrations at which activated and desensitized AChRs are present in equilibrium. We used a fluorescent dye sensitive to changes in membrane potential to examine the effects of acute activation and chronic desensitization by nicotinic AChR agonists on cell lines expressing human α4β2, α3β4 and α7 AChRs. We examined the effects of acute and prolonged application of nicotine and the partial agonists varenicline, …

Estimating The Frequency Of Cry1f Resistance In Field Populations Of The European Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), Blair D. Siegfried, Murugesan Rangasamy, Haichuan Wang, Terence Spencer, Chirakkal V. Haridas, Brigitte Tenhumberg, Douglas V. Sumerford, Nicholas P. Storer

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Transgenic corn hybrids that express toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) have suppressed European corn borer populations and reduced the pest status of this insect throughout much of the US corn belt. A major assumption of the high-dose/refuge strategy proposed for insect resistancemanagement and Bt corn is that the frequency of resistance alleles is low so that resistant pests surviving exposure to Bt corn will be rare.

RESULTS: The frequency of resistance to the Cry1F Bt toxin was estimated using twodifferent screening tools andcompared with annual susceptibility monitoring based on diagnostic bioassays and LC50 and EC50 determinations. An …

Unwed Putative Fathers: Beware Utah Adoption Law, Samuel C. Johnston Jan 2013

Unwed Putative Fathers: Beware Utah Adoption Law, Samuel C. Johnston

Utah OnLaw: The Utah Law Review Online Supplement

Utah’s adoption statute makes compliance unfairly difficult for unwed putative fathers. The difficulty is compounded by the possibility that predatory adoption agencies may be working with mothers to use Utah’s strict adoption laws to purposely deceive putative fathers who oppose adoption.

Utah lawmakers commendably want their state to be on the cutting edge of adoption law such that the interests of adoptees are served with speedy and efficient adoptions. But those lawmakers should also recognize that they can increase the legitimacy and perceived fairness of Utah laws by inserting new provisions into Utah’s adoption statute or tweaking existing requirements to …

Critical Research Needs For Successful Food Systems Adaptation To Climate Change, Michelle Miller, Molly Anderson, Charles A. Francis, Chad Kruger, Carol Barford, Jacob Park, Brent H. Mccown Jan 2013

Critical Research Needs For Successful Food Systems Adaptation To Climate Change, Michelle Miller, Molly Anderson, Charles A. Francis, Chad Kruger, Carol Barford, Jacob Park, Brent H. Mccown

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

There is a growing sense of the fragility of agricultural production in the Global North and South and of increasing risks to food security, as scientific observations confirm significant changes in the Gulf Stream, polar ice, atmospheric CO2, methane release, and other measures of climate change. This sense is heightened as each of us experiences extreme weather, such as the increasing frequency of droughts, floods, unseasonal temperatures, and erratic seasonality. The central research challenge before us is how global, national, regional, and local food systems may adapt to accelerating climate change stresses and uncertainties to ensure the availability, …

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Differ In Their Ability To Regulate The Expression Of Phosphate Transporters In Maize (Zea Mays L.), Hui Tian, Rhae A. Drijber, Xiaolin Li, Daniel N. Miller, Brian J. Wienhold

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Previous studies have found that some phosphate (Pi) starvation inducible transporter genes are downregulated and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) inducible Pi transporter genes are upregulated in maize roots associated with the fungus Glomus intraradices. However, little is known about the functional diversity of different AM fungal species in influencing the expression of Pi transporters in maize roots. Here, we studied the expression of two Pi transporter genes ZEAma:Pht1;3 (Pi starvation inducible) and ZEAma:Pht1;6 (AM inducible) in maize root colonized by different AM fungal inoculants. Non-mycorrhizal maize, maize colonized by Glomus deserticola (CA113), Glomus intraradices (IA506), Glomus mosseae (CA201), Gigaspora gigantea …

Nutrition, Histone Epigenetic Marks, And Disease, Janos Zempleni, Dandan Liu, Jing Xue Jan 2013

Nutrition, Histone Epigenetic Marks, And Disease, Janos Zempleni, Dandan Liu, Jing Xue

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

The dietary intake of essential nutrients and bioactive food compounds is a process that occurs on a daily basis for the entire life span. Therefore, your diet has a great potential to cause changes in the epigenome. Known histone modifications include acetylation, methylation, biotinylation, poly(ADP-ribosylation), ubiquitination, and sumoylation. Some of these modifications depend directly on dietary nutrients. For other modifications, bioactive dietary compounds may alter the activities of enzymes that establish or remove histone marks, thereby altering the epigenome. This chapter provides an overview of diet-dependent epigenomic marks in histones and their links with human health.

Molecular Architecture Of The Uncleaved Hiv-1 Envelope Glycoprotein Trimer, Youdong Mao, Luis Castillo-Menendez, Liping Wang, Christopher Gu, Alon Herschhorn, Anik Désormeaux, Andrés Finzi, Shi-Hua Xiang, Joseph Sodroski

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) envelope glycoprotein (Env) trimer, a membrane-fusing machine, mediates virus entry into host cells and is the sole virusspecific target for neutralizing antibodies. Binding the receptors, CD4 and CCR5/CXCR4, triggers Env conformational changes from the metastable unliganded state to the fusion-active state. We used cryo-electron microscopy to obtain a 6-Å structure of the membranebound, heavily glycosylated HIV-1 Env trimer in its uncleaved and unliganded state. The spatial organization of secondary structure elements reveals that the unliganded conformations of both gp120 and gp41 subunits differ from those induced by receptor binding. The gp120 trimer association domains, which …

Variations In The Biological Functions Of Hiv-1 Clade C Envelope In A Shiv-Infected Rhesus Macaque During Disease Progression, For Yue Tso, Levon Abrahamyan, Shiu-Lok Hu, Ruth M. Ruprecht, Charles Wood Jan 2013

Variations In The Biological Functions Of Hiv-1 Clade C Envelope In A Shiv-Infected Rhesus Macaque During Disease Progression, For Yue Tso, Levon Abrahamyan, Shiu-Lok Hu, Ruth M. Ruprecht, Charles Wood

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

A better understanding of how the biological functions of the HIV-1 envelope (Env) changes during disease progression may aid the design of an efficacious anti-HIV-1 vaccine. Although studies from patient had provided some insights on this issue, the differences in the study cohorts and methodology had make it difficult to reach a consensus of the variations in the HIV-1 Env functions during disease progression. To this end, an animal model that can be infected under controlled environment and reflect the disease course of HIV-1 infection in human will be beneficial. Such an animal model was previously demonstrated by the infection …

Kaposi’S Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus Transactivator Rta Induces Cell Cycle Arrest In G0/G1 Phase By Stabilizing And Promoting Nuclear Localization Of P27Kip, Pankaj Kumar, Charles Wood Jan 2013

Kaposi’S Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus Transactivator Rta Induces Cell Cycle Arrest In G0/G1 Phase By Stabilizing And Promoting Nuclear Localization Of P27Kip, Pankaj Kumar, Charles Wood

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) immediate-early gene, replication, and transcription activator (KRta) is a key viral protein that serves as the master regulator for viral lytic replication. In this study, we investigated the role of K-Rta in cell cycle regulation and found that the expression of K-Rta in doxycycline (Dox)-inducible BJAB cells induced cell cycle arrest in G0/G1 phase. Western blot analysis of key cell cycle regulators revealed that K-Rta-mediated cell cycle arrest was associated with a decrease in cyclin A and phosphorylated Rb (pS807/pS811) protein levels, both markers of S phase progression, and an increase in …

Low-Abundance Resistant Mutations In Hiv-1 Subtype C Antiretroviral Therapy-Naïve Individuals As Revealed By Pyrosequencing, Sandra Gonzalez, Damien C. Tully, Clement Gondwe, Charles Wood Jan 2013

Low-Abundance Resistant Mutations In Hiv-1 Subtype C Antiretroviral Therapy-Naïve Individuals As Revealed By Pyrosequencing, Sandra Gonzalez, Damien C. Tully, Clement Gondwe, Charles Wood

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Given the recent scale-up of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in sub-Saharan Africa, we sought to determine how often and at what levels do drug-resistant mutant variants exist in ART-naïve HIV subtype C infected individuals. Samples from 10 ART-naïve Zambian individuals were subjected to ultra-deep pyrosequencing (UDPS) to characterize the frequency of low-abundance drug resistance mutations in the pol gene. Low-abundance clinically relevant variants were detected for nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) and protease inhibitors (PIs) in eight of the ten subjects. Intermediate to high-level resistance was predicted for the majority of NRTIs. Mutations conferring resistance to …

Background: HIV-1 Clade C (Subtype C; HIV-1C) is responsible for greater than 50% of infections worldwide. Unlike clade B HIV-1 (Subtype B; HIV-1B), which is known to cause HIV associated dementia (HAD) in approximately 15% to 30% of the infected individuals, HIV-1C has been linked with lower prevalence of HAD (0 to 6%) in India and Ethiopia. However, recent studies report a higher prevalence of HAD in South Africa, Zambia and Botswana, where HIV-1C infections predominate. Therefore, we examined whether Southern African HIV-1C is genetically distinct and investigated its neurovirulence. HIV-1 Tat protein is a viral determinant of neurocognitive dysfunction. …

Linking Disability Rights And Democracy: Insights From Brazil, Lyusyena Kirakosyan

Societies Without Borders

This article explores the purport and portent of the 2006 United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) for disabled Brazilians. The analysis proceeds in three stages. First, it traces the evolution of the Convention as the culmination of a 30-year dialogue between the UN, governments and civil society organizations worldwide. As a legally binding instrument, the UNCRPD enables disabled citizens and interested civil society organizations to hold signatory states accountable for the protection and furtherance of disability rights. Second, the article examines how the Brazilian government came to adopt the Convention and how it has implemented …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Creative Drawing Expression On Central Executive Fatigue And Autonomic Dysfunction, Heather Dimmitt Jan 2013

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Creative Drawing Expression On Central Executive Fatigue And Autonomic Dysfunction, Heather Dimmitt

Theses & ETDs

Doodling as a form of art therapy has not been explored in much detail but there is reason to believe that it may relieve anxiety by improving central executive function through autonomic neural enhancement. To investigate the relationships between anxiety and central executive function, participants were given the state version of the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S) before and after an attention fatigue task. The task involved watching a video to deplete the resources of the central executive while heart rate variability (HRV) was recorded as a measure of autonomic neural functioning. A Video Only group was given the STAI-S …

Effect Of Arousal On Decision Making In The Iowa Gambling Task, Erica Herzig Jan 2013

Effect Of Arousal On Decision Making In The Iowa Gambling Task, Erica Herzig

Theses & ETDs

The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is a tool used to measure decision making, yet the cognitive components which determine performance on this task have not been established. Two separate cognitive components may work together. One constituent may detect net estimated value, and the other frequency of gains and losses. Loading executive functions has been shown to block participants' ability to calculate net estimated value, while leaving the ability to determine frequency of losses intact. Previous research has found that emotional arousal aids in performance on the IGT. The goal of the current study was to verify the existence of two …

Predation Behavior Of Octopus Joubini Cuvier, Benjamin Merlino Jan 2013

Predation Behavior Of Octopus Joubini Cuvier, Benjamin Merlino

Theses & ETDs

Octopuses make decisions while foraging based on a range of factors, including prey size, prey species, habitat foraged and availability of prey. This thesis examines the overall predation behavior of Octopus joubini on gastropods and Pagurus sp. A total of 7 octopuses were studied in situ and observed for overall behavior. Shells of consumed prey were observed for the presence of drill holes, locations of holes on drilled shells, and overall shell size. Object interaction and prey preference was also noted. Shells were collected and organized into groups of drilled and intact, then further arranged by size. It was found …
