Task-Based Noise Exposures For Farmers Involved In Grain Production, Michael J. Humann, Wayne T. Sanderson, Kelley J. Donham, Kevin M. Kelly
Task-Based Noise Exposures For Farmers Involved In Grain Production, Michael J. Humann, Wayne T. Sanderson, Kelley J. Donham, Kevin M. Kelly
Epidemiology and Environmental Health Faculty Publications
Few studies have been done examining noise exposures associated with agricultural tasks. This study was conducted to address that research gap by calculating the noise exposures for tasks and equipment associated with grain production and assessing the variability in those exposures. An additional aim of this study was to identify tasks and equipment that could be targeted for intervention strategies as a means toward reducing the total noise exposures of farmers and farm workers. Through the use of personal noise dosimetry and direct observation, over 30,000 one-minute noise exposure measurements and corresponding task and equipment data were collected on 18 …
The Shape Of Illusion: Water Law And Policy In The Fourth Dimension, George William Sherk
The Shape Of Illusion: Water Law And Policy In The Fourth Dimension, George William Sherk
Texas A&M Journal of Property Law
With these words, Colonel Nathan R. Jessep, played by Jack Nicholson in the movie A Few Good Men, expressed his outrage at being caught in a lie. The lie is not relevant to our purposes today. What is relevant is the fact that the truth eventually became known.
As we look to secure water supplies for the future, it is essential that decisions regarding the allocation and management of water resources be based as much as possible on truth, not on illusions created and perpetrated in the name of political expediency. As Col. Jessep could not stand being caught in …

Habitat Conservation Plans: Embracing Landowner Pragmatism And Quieting The Complexity Of The Incidental Take Permit Process, Mark F. Maples
Texas A&M Journal of Property Law
Both sides of the debate have strong reasons for disliking section 10. After a brief discussion of HCPs and their history in Part II, this Comment will evaluate the best arguments from both landowners and preservationists in Parts III and V. Parts IV and VI will discuss case history supporting both sides. Part VII will then discuss the philosophy of eco-pragmatism and recommend that resourcists and landowners should adopt some of its principles regarding adaptive management and HCPs. Within this Section, the Author will argue that the advantages to pragmatism in constitutional law that Daniel Farber submitted in 1988 are …
Memory, Cognition, And The Effect Of A Music Intervention On Healthy Older Adults, Shannon L. Bowles
Memory, Cognition, And The Effect Of A Music Intervention On Healthy Older Adults, Shannon L. Bowles
Theses and Dissertations--Gerontology
Music is a powerful modality that can bring about changes in individuals of all ages. This research employed both an experimental and quasi-experimental design to identify the effects of music as it influenced psychological well-being, memory, and cognition among older adults. Specifically, it addressed three aims: (a) To determine to what extent learning to play a music instrument later in life influenced psychological well-being and cognitive function of non-institutionalized healthy seniors, (b) To determine the effects of the amount of music involvement on psychological well-being and cognitive function (c) To determine the benefit of music for those with limited/no music …

The Youth Discount: Old Enough To Do The Crime, Too Young To Do The Time, Barry C. Feld
The Youth Discount: Old Enough To Do The Crime, Too Young To Do The Time, Barry C. Feld
Articles
In a trilogy of cases, the Supreme Court applied the Eighth Amendment to the entire category of juvenile offenders, repudiated its “death is different” jurisprudence, and required states to consider youthfulness as a mitigating factor in sentencing. Roper v. Simmons prohibited states from executing offenders for murder they committed when younger than eighteen years of age.1 Roper reasoned that immature judgment, susceptibility to negative influences, and transitory personalities reduced youths’ culpability and barred the most severe sentence.2 Graham v. Florida extended Roper’s diminished responsibility rationale and prohibited states from imposing life without parole (LWOP) sentences on youths convicted of nonhomicide …

Situating Women In Counterterrorism Discourses: Undulating Masculinities And Liminal Femininities, Fionnuala Ní Aoláin

The preoccupation with the challenges posed by violent actors has long existed for many states, whether such actors are characterized as terrorists or insurgents, nonstate or paramilitary actors. The events of September 11, 2001, brought a new urgency and vibrancy to state action in the realm of counterterrorism, illustrated by both the response of national legal systems as well as more concerted efforts to achieve multilateral and multilevel counterterrorism reactions on the international plane.1 From a feminist perspective, it is notable that terrorism and counterterrorism have long been of marginal interest to mainstream feminist legal theorizing.2 This is partly because …
Compost Bedded Pack Barns: Management Practices And Economic Implications, Randi Alyson Black
Compost Bedded Pack Barns: Management Practices And Economic Implications, Randi Alyson Black
Theses and Dissertations--Animal and Food Sciences
Compost bedded pack (CBP) barn design and pack maintenance procedures vary considerably, making advising and problem-solving challenging. One objective of this research was to characterize herd performance and management practices employed by Kentucky CBP managers (42 farms and 47 CBP facilities). Producer satisfaction, changes in historical bulk-tank somatic cell count, and improvement in herd performance parameters after transitioning to a CBP barn support reported CBP barn system benefits. Daily milk production increased from before moving into the CBP barn to the second year after (29.3 ± 0.3 vs. 30.7 ± 0.3 kg, respectively; P < 0.05) for farms using the CBP barn as the primary housing facility (n = 8). Increasing stirring frequency, stirring depth, and ambient temperatures increased pack temperature. Increased drying rate decreased CBP moisture. Increased 20.3 cm depth CBP temperature and ambient temperatures improved cow hygiene. Mastitis-causing bacteria thrive in conditions similar to optimal composting bacteria conditions, making reduction of these bacteria difficult in an active composting environment. Producers must pay attention to other management areas where preventive measures can be employed. The New Dairy Housing Investment Analysis Dashboard provides users an interactive and flexible decision tool to make more informed facility investment decisions.

Sex Differences In Multiple Dimensions Of Jealousy, Kayla Corzine
Sex Differences In Multiple Dimensions Of Jealousy, Kayla Corzine
Modern Psychological Studies
The present study distributed surveys to 98 college students (31 freshmen, 28 sophomores, 25 juniors, and 14 seniors) to explore both evolutionary psychology and social cognitive theories on jealousy. To examine the relationship between sexes in multiple dimensions of jealousy, Pfeffer and Wong's Multidimensional Jealousy Survey was given to measure cognitive, behavioral, and emotional jealousy (1989). There were no significant differences between sexes and any of the jealousy subscales. The traditional forced-choice scenario was given to see if there was a sex difference between emotional and sexual jealousy. As predicted, female participants reported that emotional jealousy was more distressing, while …

3-D Printing, Kristina Shindyapin
Senior Seminars
The world has seen many technological advances in the last 50 - 100 years. But one of the most interesting and newest ones is 3-dimensional printing. This new technology has been invented and evolved in just the last 30 years. What is 3-D printing? 3-D printing is a special way of printing, using materials such as certain types of plastic and following a 3-D model or 3-D software which tells a printer how to print something in three dimensions. This printer is also different than standard ink printers, in that it is shaped like a box and allows something to …
Deterrent Effects Of Reliable Structured Decision-Making Protocols On Spouse Abuse Perpetration And Re-Offense In The U.S. Army, Tyler Dumars
Social Work Dissertations - Archive
Since the early 1980s, victims' rights advocates, law enforcement officials, health care practitioners, and policymakers have all worked diligently to reduce or arrest the high levels of intimate partner violence (IPV) in military communities. Despite increased awareness and funding, new treatment approaches, and numerous policy changes, IPV in the military continues to be a deeply entrenched and recalcitrant problem. In January 2008, the Army began using a structured decision-making protocol (the Decision Tree Algorithm) that requires users to assess whether alleged incidents of intimate partner abuse coincide with evidence-based maltreatment definitions, and indicate that actual harm (or the potential for …

Crimean Rhetorical Sovereignty: Resisting A Deportation Of Identity, Christian Berry
Crimean Rhetorical Sovereignty: Resisting A Deportation Of Identity, Christian Berry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
On a small contested part of the world, the peninsula of Crimea, once a part of the former Soviet Union, lives a people who have endured genocide and who have struggled to etch out an identity in a land once their own. They are the Crimean Tatar. Even their name, an exonym promoting the Crimeans’ “peripheral status” (Powell) and their ensuing “cultural schizophrenia” (Vizenor), bears witness to the otherization they have withstood throughout centuries. However, despite attempts to relegate them to the history books, Crimeans are alive and well in the “motherland,” but not without some difficulty. Having been forced …

Section 15(2), Ameliorative Programs And Proportionality Review, Jena Mcgill
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
This paper argues that after the Supreme Court of Canada’s interpretation, in R. v. Kapp and R. v. Cunningham, of section 15(2) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms as an exemptive provision pursuant to which a government law or program with an ameliorative purpose may be “saved” from further Charter scrutiny, section 15(2) is now best understood as constituting an internal limit on the right to equality. Given that section 15(2) supplants section 1 of the Charter when an ameliorative law or program is at issue, the contours of the section 15(2) limit should be defined according to …
Home Gardens As Transported Landscapes: Ethnobotanical Encounters With Southeast Asian- American Horticulturists, Lauren A. Munim
Home Gardens As Transported Landscapes: Ethnobotanical Encounters With Southeast Asian- American Horticulturists, Lauren A. Munim
USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)
This research examines the belief systems, knowledge base and practice of Southeast Asian-Americans residing on the West Coast of Florida. The importance of traditional ecological knowledge in the cultivation of home gardens as relocated venues for cultural preservation of migrant horticulturalists is illustrated. Data collection methods include: participant observations, semi-structured interviews, geospatial mapping, and identification of key food and medicinal plant species. Home gardens serve as reconstructed landscapes for immigrant populations by stimulating cultural preservation of plants used in traditional healing, thus space providing a venue for the intergenerational transfer of traditional knowledge. Transported landscapes require traditional ecological knowledge regarding …

Cooperative Semantic Information Processing For Literature-Based Biomedical Knowledge Discovery, Zhiguo Yu
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Given that data is increasing exponentially everyday, extracting and understanding the information, themes and relationships from large collections of documents is more and more important to researchers in many areas. In this paper, we present a cooperative semantic information processing system to help biomedical researchers understand and discover knowledge in large numbers of titles and abstracts from PubMed query results.
Our system is based on a prevalent technique, topic modeling, which is an unsupervised machine learning approach for discovering the set of semantic themes in a large set of documents. In addition, we apply a natural language processing technique to …
Inferring Desire, Jessica A. Clarke
Inferring Desire, Jessica A. Clarke

In the course of debates over same-sex marriage, many scholars have proposed new legal definitions of sexual orientation to better account for the role of relationships in constituting identities. But these discussions have overlooked a large body of case law in which courts are already applying this model of sexual orientation, with inequitable results. This Article examines a set of fifteen years of sexual harassment decisions in which courts have endeavored to determine the sexual orientations of alleged harassers. Under federal law, sexual harassment is actionable because it is a subspecies of sex discrimination. A man who makes unwanted sexual …

Insects are known to display strategies that spread the risk of encountering unfavorable conditions, thereby decreasing the extinction probability of genetic lineages in unpredictable environments. To what extent these strategies influence the epidemiology and evolution of vector-borne diseases in stochastic environments is largely unknown. In triatomines, the vectors of the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas’ disease, juvenile development time varies between individuals and such variation most likely decreases the extinction risk of vector populations in stochastic environments. We developed a simplified multi-stage vector-borne SI epidemiological model to investigate how vector riskspreading strategies and environmental stochasticity influence the …
A Comparison Of Avian Abundance And Species Richness In Palustrine Emergent Wetlands In Southwest Florida, Matthew P. Miller
A Comparison Of Avian Abundance And Species Richness In Palustrine Emergent Wetlands In Southwest Florida, Matthew P. Miller
USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)
Wetlands are commonly thought of as transition areas between dry, upland habitats and deepwater habitats and can be the hydrologic gradient between a dry landscape and a lake or river, or they be can isolated from a flowing or deepwater system and completely surrounded by a dry landscape (Tiner 2001). Wetlands provide a valuable suite of services including providing foraging, nesting and denning habitat for birds, amphibians and other wildlife (Environmental Law Institute 2008; Stolt, et al. 2001). In southwest Florida, population growth has put enormous pressure on wetland landscapes. Wetland regulations in the state of Florida make clear that …

Children's Values And Attitudes About The Wild Vicuña (Vicugna Vicugna) In Andean Argentina, Ana Celeste Wawrzyk, Bibiana Vilá
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
Vicuñas (Vicugna vicugna) are South American camelids whose valuable fleece led to their overexploitation and near extinction in the 1960s. Since then, conservation measures enabled the wild population to rebound, and vicuñas are now viewed as strategic resources for the development of Andean communities. Perceptions of wild vicuñas are changing owed to a transition from strict conservation to managed harvest of fleece from live-shorn animals. Understanding the values and attitudes of human populations toward wildlife is important in the frameworks for developing conservation and sustainable management plans. Attitudes of children are an overlooked area of focus in this field. We …
Shocks And Bribri Agriculture Past And Present, Paula Posas
Shocks And Bribri Agriculture Past And Present, Paula Posas
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
The Bribri have a multifaceted agricultural system relatively high in agrobiodiversity in one of the most biodiverse regions on earth, the forests of Southern Costa Rica. Their agriculture and resource use patterns appear to have evolved over many centuries, informed by traditional ecological knowledge and cultural beliefs about the natural world. Tracing the history of Bribri agriculture from the oldest available documents from the first European contact offers evidence of centuries of crop cultivation, while review of the past century’s records shows socio-economic and natural shocks as key drivers of agricultural change rather than population growth or market pressures. Bribri …
Environmental Problems And The Grand Old Theory Of 'Human Nature', Helen Kopnina
Environmental Problems And The Grand Old Theory Of 'Human Nature', Helen Kopnina
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
While the notion of ‘human nature’ has been devaluated from the status of ‘grand theory’ to a marginal anthropological debate, I argue that it deserves to be resurrected in order to comprehend some of the explanatory gaps inherent in other theories. Industrialization signifies a turning point in human history, which in combination with certain ‘universal’ human traits led to recent environmental problems. Such universals include, but are not limited to, the propensity for technological innovation, the desire to elevate one’s status, and preoccupation with social justice.

Litigation's Regulatory Pathways And The Administrative State: Lessons From U.S. And Australian Climate Change Governance, Hari Osofsky, Jacqueline Peel
Articles
The administrative state struggles to address massive, complex problems such as ameliorating the financial crisis, preventing terrorism, or responding to climate change. These problems cut across levels of government — local, state, national, international — and substantive areas of law. Yet our governance structures, for the most part, are not designed to deal well with issues that involve multiple types of governance authority and institutions. A burgeoning literature by leading U.S. scholars describes this problem and proposes solutions. These analyses often include some case law, but their primary focus has been on the legislative and executive branches in the United …
What Are The Long-Term Consequences Of Peer Victimization? Changes In Biological Functioning And Its Effects On Psychological And Physical Health, Priya Anapurna Iyer
What Are The Long-Term Consequences Of Peer Victimization? Changes In Biological Functioning And Its Effects On Psychological And Physical Health, Priya Anapurna Iyer
Psychology Dissertations - Archive
Prior research has documented long-term psychological problems (e.g. emotional distress, anxiety, and depression; Kochenderfer-Ladd & Wardrop, 2001) experienced as a result of being bullied as an adolescent. Although being a recipient of peer victimization has been related to psychological health, limited research has looked at the association between peer victimization and physical health problems. Even fewer studies have investigated the relationship between being bullied and health outcomes over time. This dissertation examined whether peer victimization in early adolescence lead to changes in neuroendocrine functioning (as assessed by cortisol) and physical health outcomes several years later. Adolescents and their parents (N …
