A New Plant Record For Iowa: Lactuca Hirsuta (Asteraceae), Thomas L. Eddy
A New Plant Record For Iowa: Lactuca Hirsuta (Asteraceae), Thomas L. Eddy
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
A new record of a native vascular plant, Lactuca hirsuta Muhlenberg ex Nuttall var. sanguinea (Bigelow) Fernald, is reported for Iowa. A specimen was collected in 1983 by the author during a study of the Swaledale railroad prairie in Cerro Gordo County, north central Iowa (Eddy 1988). The plant was inexplicably excluded in the species catalogue when a Swaledale railroad flora was published in 1988; thus, this “new” Iowa record in 2013 was collected 30 years prior. The voucher specimen was “re-discovered” by Dr. Neil A. Harriman at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (OSH), and its identification verified.
Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Oxidized Eicosapentaenoic Acid Sodium Salt, Kelsey D. Jordan, Rita K. Upmacis
Mass Spectrometric Analysis Of Oxidized Eicosapentaenoic Acid Sodium Salt, Kelsey D. Jordan, Rita K. Upmacis
Student-Faculty Research Projects
Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is an omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) with 20 carbon atoms and 5 carbon-carbon double bonds. Mammalian cells cannot synthesize long chain PUFAs such as EPA de novo, and, thus, the most effective way to enrich cells in EPA is by dietary intake of fish oils. EPA supplementation causes an increase in its concentration in plasma lipids and in cell membrane phospholipids. Many beneficial effects of EPA supplementation have been noted, including (1) the potential to sensitize cancerous tumors towards chemotherapy, (2) the promotion of cardiovascular health, and (3) the alleviation of some mental disorders, but results …
University Imprimaturs On Student Speech: The Certification Cases, Emily Gold Waldman
University Imprimaturs On Student Speech: The Certification Cases, Emily Gold Waldman
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
The Article begins in Part I by describing these three student speech cases and then examining what makes them a distinct category within the larger student speech landscape. As I discuss, the student speech framework was largely developed by the Supreme Court in the K-12 public school context. Conflicts over student speech in universities, in turn, have generally centered on the extent to which the K-12 framework should carry over to the higher education context, given the greater independence and maturity of university students. Recent cases about universities' ability to control student publications, for example, fall into this mold, with …
Surrender And Subordination: Birth Mothers And Adoption Law Reform, Elizabeth J. Samuels
Surrender And Subordination: Birth Mothers And Adoption Law Reform, Elizabeth J. Samuels
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
For more than thirty years, adoption law reform advocates have been seeking to restore for adult adoptees the right to access their original birth certificates, a right that was lost in all but two states between the late 1930s and 1990. The advocates have faced strong opposition and have succeeded only in recent years and only in eight states. Among the most vigorous advocates for access are birth mothers who surrendered their children during a time it was believed that adoption would relieve unmarried women of shame and restore them to a respectable life. The birth mother advocates say that …
Fracking Patents: The Emergence Of Patents As Information-Containment Tools In Shale Drilling, Daniel R. Cahoy, Joel Gehman, Zhen Lei
Fracking Patents: The Emergence Of Patents As Information-Containment Tools In Shale Drilling, Daniel R. Cahoy, Joel Gehman, Zhen Lei
Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review
The advantages of new sources of energy must be weighed against environmental, health, and safety concerns related to new production technology. The rapid development of unconventional oil and gas fields, such as the Barnett and Marcellus Shales, provide an excellent context for these contrasting goals. Information about extraction hazards is an extremely important issue. In general, patents are viewed as a positive force in this regard, providing a vehicle for disseminating information in exchange for a limited property right over an invention. However, by limiting the evaluation of an invention by third parties, patents might also be used to control …

Risking Reproduction: Reproductive Health Among Women With Sickle Cell Disease, Paula Thompson Ross
Risking Reproduction: Reproductive Health Among Women With Sickle Cell Disease, Paula Thompson Ross
Wayne State University Dissertations
Reproductive health among women with sickle cell disease remains a critical gap in the literatures on sickle cell disease, reproductive health, and women's health. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a condition with a complicated clinical sequelae, accompanied by a myriad of health complications, unremitting, extreme pain, and frequent hospitalizations. The purpose of this study was to explore the meaning and lived experiences of reproductive health and health care among women with sickle cell disease.
Using a qualitative, phenomenological methodology, this study captured the authentic voices of 28 adult women with sickle cell disease and their perceptions and experiences of reproductive …
Queering Ghana: Sexuality, Community, And The Struggle For Cultural Belonging In An African Nation, William D. Banks
Queering Ghana: Sexuality, Community, And The Struggle For Cultural Belonging In An African Nation, William D. Banks
Wayne State University Dissertations
In this dissertation, I provide an analysis of the social practices of a queer community in southern Ghana known as Saso people. Drawing on in-depth interviews with indigenous religious priests, I focus specifically on practices of leadership and kinship, sexual initiation, and engagement and marriage. I interpret these practices as a set of strategies deployed by Saso people to articulate a sense of cultural belonging in contemporary Ghana. In so doing, I make a contribution to the scant ethnographic literature on queer African communities, while demonstrating the value of priests as research subjects. My ethnographic fieldwork, as well as that …
Polymeric Nanocarriers And Their Oral Inhalation Formulations For The Regional Delivery Of Nucleic Acids To The Lungs, Denise Santos Conti
Polymeric Nanocarriers And Their Oral Inhalation Formulations For The Regional Delivery Of Nucleic Acids To The Lungs, Denise Santos Conti
Wayne State University Dissertations
Gene therapy has attracted attention in the fields of medicine, pharmacy, and bionanotechnology due to the potential for treating a large number of medically relevant diseases. Oral inhalation (OI) is a promising route for the administration of therapeutics, including small molecules and biomacromolecules, such as nucleotides, peptides, and proteins, to (locally) and through (systemically) the lungs. The use of OI is especially attractive for the delivery of nucleic acids as it provides a direct and non-invasive route for targeting the lungs. Pressurized metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs), are the most commonly used OI in treatment of lung diseases and are thus promising …

An Incomplete Revolution: Feminists And The Legacy Of Marital-Property Reform, Mary Ziegler
An Incomplete Revolution: Feminists And The Legacy Of Marital-Property Reform, Mary Ziegler
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
As this Article shows, the conventional historical narrative of the divorce revolution is not so much incorrect as incomplete. Histories of the divorce revolution have focused disproportionately on the introduction of no-fault rules and have correctly concluded that women's groups did not play a central role in the introduction of such laws. However, work on divorce law has not adequately addressed the history of marital-property reform or engaged with scholarship on the struggle for the Equal Rights Amendment to the federal Constitution. Putting these two bodies of work in dialogue with one another, the Article provides the first comprehensive history …
The Scarlet Letter: The Supreme Court And The Language Of Abortion Stigma, Paula Abrams
The Scarlet Letter: The Supreme Court And The Language Of Abortion Stigma, Paula Abrams
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
Why does the Supreme Court refer to the woman who is seeking an abortion as "mother"? Surely the definition has not escaped the attention of a Court that frequently relies on the dictionary to define important terms or principles. And why does the Court choose to describe the fetus as a child? What message does this language send about abortion and the woman who seeks an abortion? The Court's abortion decisions embody an ongoing debate on the legitimacy of constitutional protection of the right to choose. This debate unfolds most obviously as a discourse on constitutional interpretation; disagreements within the …
Using Mapreduce Streaming For Distributed Life Simulation On The Cloud, Atanas Radenski
Using Mapreduce Streaming For Distributed Life Simulation On The Cloud, Atanas Radenski
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Books and Book Chapters
Distributed software simulations are indispensable in the study of large-scale life models but often require the use of technically complex lower-level distributed computing frameworks, such as MPI. We propose to overcome the complexity challenge by applying the emerging MapReduce (MR) model to distributed life simulations and by running such simulations on the cloud. Technically, we design optimized MR streaming algorithms for discrete and continuous versions of Conway’s life according to a general MR streaming pattern. We chose life because it is simple enough as a testbed for MR’s applicability to a-life simulations and general enough to make our results applicable …

Real Time Estimation, Quantization, And Remote Control Of Permanent Magnet Dc Motors, Mohammad Obeidat
Real Time Estimation, Quantization, And Remote Control Of Permanent Magnet Dc Motors, Mohammad Obeidat
Wayne State University Dissertations
Establishing real-time models for electric motors is of importance for capturing authentic dynamic behavior of the motors to improve control performance, enhance robustness, and support diagnosis. Quantized sensors are less expensive and remote controlled motors mandate signal quantization. Such limitations on observations introduce challenging issues in motor parameter estimation. This dissertation develops estimators for model parameters of permanent magnet direct current motors (PMDC) using quantized speed measurements. A typical linearized model structure of PMDC motors is used as a benchmark platform to demonstrate the technology, its key properties, and benefits. Convergence properties are established. Simulations and experimental studies are performed …

Computational Approaches To Anti-Toxin Therapies And Biomarker Identification, Rebecca Jane Swett
Computational Approaches To Anti-Toxin Therapies And Biomarker Identification, Rebecca Jane Swett
Wayne State University Dissertations
This work describes the fundamental study of two bacterial toxins with computational methods, the rational design of a potent inhibitor using molecular dynamics, as well as the development of two bioinformatic methods for mining genomic data.
Clostridium difficile is an opportunistic bacillus which produces two large glucosylating toxins. These toxins, TcdA and TcdB cause severe intestinal damage. As Clostridium difficile harbors considerable antibiotic resistance, one treatment strategy is to prevent the tissue damage that the toxins cause. The catalytic glucosyltransferase domain of TcdA and TcdB was studied using molecular dynamics in the presence of both a protein-protein binding partner and …

Intermittent Swim Stress Effects On Anxiety Behavior, Timothy A. Warner
Intermittent Swim Stress Effects On Anxiety Behavior, Timothy A. Warner
Doctoral Dissertations
Millions of Americans are suffering from depression each year, leading to a significant number of individuals who seek treatment for their ailment. However, fewer than 50 percent of depressed individuals fully recover using current methods. The comorbidity between depression and anxiety could be a contributing factor in the lower rates of recovery. The demonstrated correlation between anxiety and depression has led to the term "anxious depression," which is associated with difficulty in coping, a poorer rate of recovery, and more severe symptoms of depression. The purpose of this dissertation was to expand on an existing animal model of depression (intermittent …
Writing Assessment's "Debilitating Inheritance": Behaviorism's Dismissal Of Experience, Maja Joiwind Wilson
Writing Assessment's "Debilitating Inheritance": Behaviorism's Dismissal Of Experience, Maja Joiwind Wilson
Doctoral Dissertations
In this project, I examine the legacy of behaviorism's dismissal of experience on contemporary writing assessment theory and practice within the field of composition studies. I use an archival study of John B. Watson's letters to Robert Mearns Yerkes to establish behaviorism's systematic denial of experience and its related constructs: mind, consciousness, thought, emotions, purpose, and meaning. I trace this denial through the efficiency movement's effects on education and educational measurement in the early 20th century and the establishment of the behaviorist infrastructure of assessment---an infrastructure that contributed; paradoxically, to the early focus in composition studies on experience. I analyze …
Molecular Self-Assembly Of Functionalized Pentacenes And Fullerenes On Metal Surfaces By Stm And Dft Investigations, Jun Wang
Doctoral Dissertations
Enormous efforts have been made in seeking alternative pathways to more effectively use solar energy. Organic solar cells, composed essentially of carbon-based organic molecular materials, have attracted considerable scientific and industrial attentions because of their economic and environmental benefits. It is advantageous to have the comprehension of the molecular structures and interfacial morphologies for these active molecular materials on substrates in the nanoscale regime.
Controlling the heterostructures of the molecular donor and acceptor materials is essential to overcoming the efficiency bottleneck in organic photovoltaics. Molecular self-assembly on patterned substrates provides a bottom-up approach to create well-controlled molecular heterojunctions and a …
Approaches To Modeling Pathogen And Natural Organic Matter Removals In Slow-Rate Biofilters, Jeffrey Dale Senders
Approaches To Modeling Pathogen And Natural Organic Matter Removals In Slow-Rate Biofilters, Jeffrey Dale Senders
Doctoral Dissertations
There are limited expressions capable of estimating removals in one of the world's oldest and most sustainable water treatment systems: slow-rate biofilters. This research addresses the problem by deriving semi-empirical models that predict pathogen and natural organic matter removals within these natural and engineered sand filters. The more complex pathogen model, or phenomenological colloidal filtration theory (pCFT), applies the 1937 Iwasaki solution to New England pilot scale E. coli observations. The derived pCFT was then calibrated through a series of experimental bench scale phases. Further pCFT validation came by way of a seamless application to multiple microorganisms. Viruses (MS2 as …
Interactions Of Shiga-Like Toxin-2 (Stx-2) From Escherichia Coli O157:H7 And The Bcl-2 Family Of Proteins During Host Cell Programmed Cell Death, Lia K. Jeffrey
Interactions Of Shiga-Like Toxin-2 (Stx-2) From Escherichia Coli O157:H7 And The Bcl-2 Family Of Proteins During Host Cell Programmed Cell Death, Lia K. Jeffrey
Doctoral Dissertations
Stx-2 is a major contributor to the pathogenesis of Escherichia coli 0157:H7. Prior reports suggest that Stx-2 increases necrosis and apoptosis of a variety of host cells including those of endothelial origin as well as immune cells such as neutrophils (156). However, the role Stx-2 plays in delayed apoptosis of neutrophils is not fully understood given that previous studies have shown conflicting results (118, 51). The process of apoptosis is mediated by the Bcl-2 protein family (2, 46, 226). The purpose of this research was to define the molecular mechanisms of Stx-2 and Bcl-2 protein family interactions. These studies examined …
Identification And Stoichiometric Analysis Of The Monosomal Translational Complex, Xin Wang
Identification And Stoichiometric Analysis Of The Monosomal Translational Complex, Xin Wang
Doctoral Dissertations
The identification of the components involved in translational complexes has relied primarily on in vitro studies. Determining which proteins associate together in these complexes, under what conditions they do so, and how the composition of the complexes change under different conditions have became the key issues of in vivo studies. After a one-step affinity purification, using a novel technique of analytical ultracentrifugation with a fluorescence detection system (AU-FDS) I have identified a 77S monosomal translational complex in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Major components of the 77S complex include the 80S ribosome, mRNA, and components of the closed-loop structure, eIF4E, eIF4G1/eIF4G2 …
Engineering Lipases And Solvents For Trans/-Esterification Of Used Vegetable Oils, Michael Dore Gagnon
Engineering Lipases And Solvents For Trans/-Esterification Of Used Vegetable Oils, Michael Dore Gagnon
Doctoral Dissertations
Diminishing petroleum reserves and increasing environmental awareness has led to an urgent need to develop alternative fuels, such as biodiesel. However, the conventional method to produce biodiesel uses environmentally harmful chemical catalysts. A relatively new development in the production of biodiesel is through enzymatic trans/- esterification with a lipase catalyst. Despite several advantages, there are a few technical and economical obstacles that limit this process: (1) immiscibility of the hydrophilic methanol and hydrophobic triglyceride which results in the formation of an interface leading to mass transfer resistance, (2) insufficient availability of large quantities of inexpensive lipase suitable for catalysis, and …
