Ventilation Rates And Activity Levels Of Juvenile Jumbo Squid Under Metabolic Suppression In The Oxygen Minimum Zone, Katja Trübenbach, Maria R. Pegado, Brad A. Seibel, Rui Rosa
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The Humboldt (jumbo) squid, Dosidicus gigas, is a part-time resident of the permanent oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) in the Eastern Tropical Pacific and, thereby, it encounters oxygen levels below its critical oxygen partial pressure. To better understand the ventilatory mechanisms that accompany the process of metabolic suppression in these top oceanic predators, we exposed juvenile D. gigas to the oxygen levels found in the OMZ (1% O2, 1 kPa, 10°C) and measured metabolic rate, activity cycling patterns, swimming mode, escape jet (burst) frequency, mantle contraction frequency and strength, stroke volume and oxygen extraction efficiency. In normoxia, metabolic …

Ecosystem-based planning and management have stimulated the need to gather sociocultural values and human uses of land in formats accessible to diverse planners and researchers. Human Ecology Mapping (HEM) approaches offer promising spatial data gathering and analytical tools, while also addressing important questions about human-landscape connections. This article reviews and compares the characteristics of three HEM approaches that are increasingly used in natural resource management contexts, each focused on a particular aspect of human-environmental interactions. These aspects include tenure and resource use (TRU), local ecological knowledge (LEK), and sense of place (SOP). We discuss their origins, provide examples of their …
Colony Growth Of Corals Transplanted For Restoration Depends On Their Site Of Origin And Environmental Factors, Graham E. Forrester, Kerianne Taylor, Stephanie Schofield, Amy Maynard
Colony Growth Of Corals Transplanted For Restoration Depends On Their Site Of Origin And Environmental Factors, Graham E. Forrester, Kerianne Taylor, Stephanie Schofield, Amy Maynard
Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications
We determined that growth differences among coral fragments transplanted for restoration were influenced by both source population and environmental factors. In two common garden experiments, storm-generated fragments of Acropora palmata were transplanted from two source populations in the British Virgin Islands to a restoration site (a “common garden”) that lacked A. palmata. In the first experiment, colonies from different sources grew at different rates in the first year after transplanting, suggesting either genetic differences among source populations or enduring acclimation to conditions at the source site. No differences in growth among source populations were detected in the second common garden …

The Development, Implementation And Initial Evaluation Of Tailorable Resource Packs For Multimedia Based "Assessments For Learning"., Barry Ryan
Other resources
In this project a suite of tailorable teaching and learning resources were created, implemented and evaluated. These resources focused on the assessment for learning model, adopting the constructivist approach to learning. Here, the student builds their knowledge, and deepens their understanding, as they complete their assessment. The resources were designed to aid academic adoption, and student implementation, of this model of assessment. The assessment outputs created using these resources were digital videos and network concept maps. The tailorable resources provided a structured and scaffolded environment for both the academic and student to explore this learning space. Both students and academic …

Altered Emotional Interference Processing In The Amygdala And Insula In Women With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Steven E. Bruce, Katherine R. Buchholz, Wilson J. Brown, Laura Yan
Psychology Faculty Works
Background: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is characterized by distinct behavioral and physiological changes. Given the significant impairments related to PTSD, examination of the biological underpinnings is crucial to the development of theoretical models and improved treatments of PTSD. Methods: We used an attentional interference task using emotional distracters to test for top-down versus bottom-up dysfunction in the interaction of cognitive-control circuitry and emotion-processing circuitry. A total of 32 women with PTSD (based on an interpersonal trauma) and 21 matched controls were tested. Event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging was carried out as participants directly attended to, or attempted to ignore, fear-related …

Although several paradigms have shown that threatening faces are processed preferentially, no study to date has investigated whether this preferential processing can be manipulated by value associations. Using schematic faces, this study was divided into three phases in order to investigate the effects of associating high values with happy faces and low values with angry faces. The baseline phase, in which elicited a shorter RT and a larger N2pc for angry faces than for happy faces, demonstrated that the preferential processing of angry faces could be obtained in the discrimination task. After the training phase, which established associations between different …

Engendering Modern China: Visual Representations Of The Prc, Jennifer Lee
East Asian Languages and Cultures Department Honors Papers
Propaganda posters have been one of many forms of political media used by modern governments such as the United States, Russia, England, and China, to spread a message across a large area to a wide audience. The popularity of the use of propaganda posters has sparked an interest in the study of posters. China has a long and varied history of the use of posters and propaganda posters. Pre-1949 propaganda posters, especially during the revolutionary period, used woodblock prints with stark lines and deep bright colors. Woodblock prints often employed yellow and red backgrounds to accent the black figures in …
Diverse Mechanisms Of Trinucleotide Repeat Disorders: An Exploration Of Fragile X Syndrome And Huntington’S Disease, Cara Strobel
Diverse Mechanisms Of Trinucleotide Repeat Disorders: An Exploration Of Fragile X Syndrome And Huntington’S Disease, Cara Strobel
Undergraduate Review
Trinucleotide repeat disorders are an umbrella group of genetic diseases that have been well described clinically for a long time; however, the scientific community is only beginning to understand their molecular basis. They are classified in two basic groups depending on the location of the relevant triplet repeats in a coding or a non-coding region of the genome. Repeat expansion past a disease-specific threshold results in molecular and cellular abnormalities that manifest themselves as disease symptoms. Repeat expansion is postulated to occur via slippage during DNA replication and/or transcription-mediated DNA repair. Trinucleotide repeat disorders are characterized by genetic anticipation, which …
Evaluating The Success Of Seed Sowing In A New England Grassland, Chad C. Jones, Glenn D. Dreyer, Nels Barrett
Evaluating The Success Of Seed Sowing In A New England Grassland, Chad C. Jones, Glenn D. Dreyer, Nels Barrett
Botany Faculty Publications
Grassland habitat is declining in the northeastern United States, leading to a decline in associated native species. Consequently, there is considerable interest by land managers in conserving and restoring grassland habitats in the Northeast. However, unlike the Great Plains and Europe, quantitative monitoring of restoration sites is uncommon, making it difficult to improve new restoration projects. Here we evaluate a grassland restoration in Waterford, Connecticut to determine if mechanical clearing of woody vegetation combined with sowing 23 native grasses and forbs led to successful establishment of these species. We also compared cover, diversity, and colonization by exotic and woody species …

Elementary Teacher Perceptions Of Teaching Practices That Foster Creative Thinking In Students, Jessica Roy
Elementary Teacher Perceptions Of Teaching Practices That Foster Creative Thinking In Students, Jessica Roy
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
Divergent thinking is a 21st century skill that allows individuals to create innovative ways to alleviate societal burdens by finding new solutions to old problems. However, creativity is often overlooked or ignored in the classroom environment because the rigid atmosphere of authority does not allow for the simultaneous use of multiple cognitive abilities. What can teachers do, or are they doing, to ensure that divergent thinking is fostered in their classrooms? Three surveys were administered to 32 elementary school teachers to determine if there is a disconnect between what teachers believe fosters creativity with actual practices within the classroom. Survey …

Preparation Of New Versatile And Implantable Titanate Nanofiber-Bioscaffolds Via Efficient Cation Exchanges, Keaton Piper
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
For the first time in the implantable biomaterials field, efficient hydrothermal cation exchange methods were developed suitable for mass-production of implantable material. The cation exchange conditions were performed by various methods of temperature, pressure, and time exposure. To confirm both chemical and physical alteration of the scaffold, XRD shift analysis, EDX atomic composition, and SEM imaging were conducted. The optimal results are to use aqueous solutions of 0.5 M chloride salts in sealed heated containers at 180 ̊C for eight hours. Cation exchange capacities are determined for K+, Na+, Li+, Ca2+, and Sr2+; future studies demanding durable, highly specific composition …
