Prioritizing Pacific Salmon Stocks For Conservation: Response To Allendorf Et Al., Thomas C. Wainwright, Robin Waples Jan 2013

Prioritizing Pacific Salmon Stocks For Conservation: Response To Allendorf Et Al., Thomas C. Wainwright, Robin Waples

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Recently, Allendorf et al. (1997) proposed criteria intended to guide prioritization of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) stocks for conservation. The authors provide a good summary of several important aspects of extinction risk, and we agree with many of their points: (1) prioritization is useful and may help focus conservation efforts; (2) a two-pronged approach that identifies the relative risk faced by different populations and evaluates their significance is a reasonable strategy; (3) risks should be evaluated based on multiple criteria; and (4) specific threshold values for these criteria promote objectivity and can assist in decision making. We also recognize …

Lipophilic Stinging Nettle Extracts Possess Potent Anti-Inflammatory Activity, Are Not Cytotoxic And May Be Superior To Traditional Tinctures For Treating Inflammatory Disorders., Tyler A. Johnson, Johann Sohn, Wayne D Inman, Leonard F. Bjeldanes, Keith Rayburn

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship

Extracts of four plant portions (roots, stems, leaves and flowers) of Urtica dioica (the stinging nettle) were prepared using accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) involving water, hexanes, methanol and dichloromethane. The extracts were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic activities in an NF-κB luciferase and MTT assay using macrophage immune (RAW264.7) cells. A standardized commercial ethanol extract of nettle leaves was also evaluated. The methanolic extract of the flowering portions displayed significant anti-inflammatory activity on par with a standard compound celastrol (1) but were moderately cytotoxic. Alternatively, the polar extracts (water, methanol, ethanol) of the roots, stems and leaves displayed moderate …

Hd-Cnv: Hotspot Detector For Copy Number Variants., Jenna L Butler, Marjorie Elizabeth Osborne Locke, Kathleen A Hill, Mark Daley Jan 2013

Hd-Cnv: Hotspot Detector For Copy Number Variants., Jenna L Butler, Marjorie Elizabeth Osborne Locke, Kathleen A Hill, Mark Daley

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

SUMMARY: Copy number variants (CNVs) are a major source of genetic variation. Comparing CNVs between samples is important in elucidating their potential effects in a wide variety of biological contexts. HD-CNV (hotspot detector for copy number variants) is a tool for downstream analysis of previously identified CNV regions from multiple samples, and it detects recurrent regions by finding cliques in an interval graph generated from the input. It creates a unique graphical representation of the data, as well as summary spreadsheets and UCSC (University of California, Santa Cruz) Genome Browser track files. The interval graph, when viewed with other software …

Discontinuous Parameter Estimates With Least Squares Estimators, J. L. Mead Jan 2013

Discontinuous Parameter Estimates With Least Squares Estimators, J. L. Mead

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We discuss weighted least squares estimates of ill-conditioned linear inverse problems where weights are chosen to be inverse error covariance matrices. Least squares estimators are the maximum likelihood estimate for normally distributed data and parameters, but here we do not assume particular probability distributions. Weights for the estimator are found by ensuring its minimum follows a χ2 distribution. Previous work with this approach has shown that it is competitive with regularization methods such as the L-curve and Generalized Cross Validation (GCV) [20]. In this work we extend the method to find diagonal weighting matrices, rather than a scalar regularization …

Loss Of Dystrophin Staining In Cardiomyocytes: A Novel Method For Detection Early Myocardial Infarction, Satwat Hashmi, Suhail Al-Salam Jan 2013

Loss Of Dystrophin Staining In Cardiomyocytes: A Novel Method For Detection Early Myocardial Infarction, Satwat Hashmi, Suhail Al-Salam

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Myocardial infarction (MI) is the most frequent diagnosis made in majority of sudden death cases subjected to clinical and medicolegal autopsies. When sudden death occurs at a very early stage of MI, traditional macroscopic examination, or histological stains cannot easily detect the myocardial changes. For this reason we propose a new method for detecting MI at an early stage. Murine model of MI was used to induce MI through permanent ligation of left anterior descending branch of left coronary artery. Five groups of C57B6/J mice were used for inducing MI, which includes 20 minutes, 30 minutes, one hour, four hours …

Synthesis And Cellular Studies Of Polyamine Conjugates Of A Mercaptomethyl-Carboranylporphyrin, N. V.S.Dinesh K. Bhupathiraju, M. Graça H. Vicente

Faculty Publications

Seven polyamine conjugates of a tri(p-carboranylmethylthio) tetrafluorophenylporphyrin were prepared in high yields by sequential substitution of the p-phenyl fluoride of tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)porphyrin (TPPF), and investigated as boron delivery agents for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). The polyamines used were derivatives of the natural-occurring spermine with different lengths of the carbon chains, terminal primary amine groups and, in two of the conjugates, additional aminoethyl moieties. A tri(polyethylene glycol) conjugate was also synthesized for comparison purposes. The polyamine conjugates showed low dark cytotoxicity (IC50 >400 μM) and low phototoxicity (IC50 >40 μM at 1.5 J/cm 2). All polyamine conjugates, with one exception, showed …

Synthesis And Structure-Activity Relationship Of Piperidine-Derived Non-Urea Soluble Epoxide Hydrolase Inhibitors, Stevan Pecic, Svetlana Pakhomova, Marcia E. Newcomer, Christophe Morisseau, Bruce D. Hammock, Zhengxiang Zhu, Alison Rinderspacher, Shi Xian Deng

Faculty Publications

A series of potent amide non-urea inhibitors of soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) is disclosed. The inhibition of soluble epoxide hydrolase leads to elevated levels of epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs), and thus inhibitors of sEH represent one of a novel approach to the development of vasodilatory and anti-inflammatory drugs. Structure-activities studies guided optimization of a lead compound, identified through high-throughput screening, gave rise to sub-nanomolar inhibitors of human sEH with stability in human liver microsomal assay suitable for preclinical development. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Metallization Of Dna And Dna Origami Using A Pd Seeding Method, Yanli Geng Jan 2013

Metallization Of Dna And Dna Origami Using A Pd Seeding Method, Yanli Geng

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I developed a Pd seeding method in association with electroless plating, to successfully metallize both lambda DNA and DNA origami templates on different surfaces. On mica surfaces, this method offered a fast, simple process, and the ability to obtain a relatively high yield of metallized DNA nanostructures. When using lambda DNA as the templates, I studied the effect of Pd(II) activation time on the seed height and density, and an optimal activation time between 10 and 30 min was obtained. Based on the Pd seeds formed on DNA, as well as a Pd electroless plating solution, continuous …

Risk And Manifestation Of Cardiovascular Disease Among Cancer Caregivers: Effects Of Stress, Depression, And Gender, Kelly M. Shaffer

Open Access Theses

Family members and friends who provide unpaid care to an ill relative tend to experience higher levels of stress, more depressive symptoms, and greater vulnerability to disease than the general population (Pinquart & Sörensen, 2003). This study was to determine whether cancer caregivers experience an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and to examine the extent to which psychosocial variables related to the disease outcomes. A total of 896 caregivers participated in a national survey at two years after the diagnosis of their relative with cancer (T1), and 607 participated again at five years post-diagnosis (T2) provided self-report data on …
