The Responses Of Soil And Rhizosphere Respiration To Simulated Climatic Changes Vary By Season., Vidya Suseela, Jeffrey S. Dukes Feb 2013

The Responses Of Soil And Rhizosphere Respiration To Simulated Climatic Changes Vary By Season., Vidya Suseela, Jeffrey S. Dukes

Department of Forestry & Natural Resources Faculty Publications

Responses of soil respiration (Rs) to anthropogenic climate change will affect terrestrial carbon storage and, thus, feed back to warming. To provide insight into how warming and changes in precipitation regimes affect the rate and temperature sensitivity of Rs and rhizosphere respiration (Rr) across the year, we subjected a New England old-field ecosystem to four levels of warming and three levels of precipitation (ambient, drought, and wet treatments). We measured Rs and heterotrophic respiration (Rh) monthly (in areas of the plots with and without plants, respectively) and estimated Rr by calculating the difference in respiration between Rs and Rh. Even …

Cropping History Affects Nodulation And Symbiotic Efficiency Of Distinct Hairy Vetch (Vicia Villosa Roth.) Genotypes With Resident Soil Rhizobia, N. V. Mothapo, J.M. Grossman, T. Sooksa-Nguan, J. Maul, S. L. Bräuer, W. Shi Feb 2013

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Compatible rhizobia strains are essential for nodulation and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) of hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth, HV). We evaluated how past HV cultivation affected nodulation and BNF across host genotypes. Five groups of similar HV genotypes were inoculated with soil dilutions from six paired fields, three with 10-year HV cultivation history (HV+) and three with no history (HV−), and used to determine efficiency of rhizobia nodulation and BNF. Nodulation was equated to nodule number and mass, BNF to plant N and Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar viceae (Rlv) soil cell counts using qPCR to generate an amplicon of targeted …

Principles Of Periodontology, Andrew R. Dentino, Seokwoo Lee, Jason Mailhot, Arthur F. Hefti Feb 2013

Principles Of Periodontology, Andrew R. Dentino, Seokwoo Lee, Jason Mailhot, Arthur F. Hefti

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Periodontal diseases are among the most common diseases affecting humans. Dental biofilm is a contributor to the etiology of most periodontal diseases. It is also widely accepted that immunological and inflammatory responses to biofilm components are manifested by signs and symptoms of periodontal disease. The outcome of such interaction is modulated by risk factors (modifiers), either inherent (genetic) or acquired (environmental), significantly affecting the initiation and progression of different periodontal disease phenotypes. While definitive genetic determinants responsible for either susceptibility or resistance to periodontal disease have yet to be identified, many factors affecting the pathogenesis have been described, including smoking, …

Bone Marrow-Derived Microglia-Based Neurturin Delivery Protects Against Dopaminergic Neurodegeneration In A Mouse Model Of Parkinson's Disease, K. C. Biju, R. A. Santacruz, C. Chen, Q. Zhou, J. Yao, S. L. Rohrabaugh, R. A. Clark, James Lewis Roberts, Kimberley A. Phillips, S. Z. Imam, S. Li

Psychology Faculty Research

Although neurotrophic factors have long been recognized as potent agents for protecting against neuronal degeneration, clinical success in treating Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders has been hindered by difficulties in delivery of trophic factors across the blood brain barrier (BBB). Bone marrow hematopoietic stem cell-based gene therapy is emerging as a promising tool for overcoming drug delivery problems, as myeloid cells can cross the BBB and are recruited in large numbers to sites of neurodegeneration, where they become activated microglia that can secrete trophic factors. We tested the efficacy of bone marrow-derived microglial delivery of neurturin (NTN) in protecting …

De Novo Metagenomic Assembly Of Microbial Communities From The Lower Convective Layer Of The Red Sea Atlantis Ii Brine Environment., Osama Said Ali Feb 2013

De Novo Metagenomic Assembly Of Microbial Communities From The Lower Convective Layer Of The Red Sea Atlantis Ii Brine Environment., Osama Said Ali

Theses and Dissertations

The lower convective layer of the Red Sea Atlantis II brine pool (ATII-LCL) is an unexplored environment that is characterized by harsh conditions of high temperature (68ºC), high salinity (26%), high concentration of heavy metals and very low oxygen content. Microbial communities inhabiting this extreme environment are expected to have unique structural and functional adaptations to survive such harsh conditions. These adaptations can be expressed by novel genes or new metabolic pathways. The recent advances in the next generation sequencing technologies have increased the size of the generated reads (500 bps in 454 pyrosequencing) and lowered the sequencing cost per …

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Pancreatic cancer (PC) is lethal malignancy with very high mortality rate. Absence of sensitive and specific marker(s) is one of the major factors for poor prognosis of PC patients. In pilot studies using small set of patients, secreted acute phase proteins neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin (NGAL) and TGF-β family member macrophage inhibitory cytokine-1 (MIC-1) are proposed as most potential biomarkers specifically elevated in the blood of PC patients. However, their performance as diagnostic markers for PC, particularly in pre-treatment patients, remains unknown. In order to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of NGAL and MIC-1, their levels were measured in plasma samples …

Database Application For A Youth Market Livestock Production Education Program, Marc R. Horney

Journal of Extension

This article offers an example of a database designed to support teaching animal production and husbandry skills in county youth livestock programs. The system was used to manage production goals, animal growth and carcass data, photos and other imagery, and participant records. These were used to produce a variety of customized reports to help guide leaders and members through the project animal selection and management process and evaluate progress over time. The chief advantage of the system is in its utility in reducing the effort required to perform the many communication and information-sharing tasks that were necessary for success.

Report To The City Of Chicago On Conflicts With Ring-Billed Gulls And The 2012 Integrated Ring-Billed Gull Damage Management Project, J. W. Hartmann, S. F. Beckerman, Richard M. Engeman, T. W. Seamans

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The large ring-billed gull (Larus delawarensis) population in the City of Chicago has caused various conflicts including general nuisance, property damage, economic losses, and threats to human health and safety. Several studies have shown a relationship between ring-billed gulls and increased levels of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) in nearshore waters. Results of tests for E. coli have led to the issuance of swim advisories at Chicago beaches.

The objectives of the Chicago Ring-billed Gull Damage Management Project were to (1) reduce the local production of ring-billed gulls, (2) reduce the …

Frequent Cross-Species Transmission Of Parvoviruses Among Diverse Carnivore Hosts, Andrew B. Allison, Dennis J. Kohler, Karen A. Fox, Justin D. Brown, Richard W. Gerhold, Valerie I. Shearn-Bochsler, Edward J. Dubovi, Colin R. Parrish, Edward C. Holmes

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Although parvoviruses are commonly described in domestic carnivores, little is known about their biodiversity in nondomestic species. A phylogenetic analysis of VP2 gene sequences from puma, coyote, gray wolf, bobcat, raccoon, and striped skunk revealed two major groups related to either feline panleukopenia virus (“FPV-like”) or canine parvovirus (“CPV-like”). Crossspecies transmission was commonplace, with multiple introductions into each host species but, with the exception of raccoons, relatively little evidence for onward transmission in nondomestic species.

Temporal Structure Of Variability Decreases In Upper Extremity Movements Post Stroke, Amit Sethi, Tara Patterson, Theresa Mcguirk, Carolynn Patten, Lorie G. Richards, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

Methods: Sixteen participants with chronic stroke and nine age-matched controls performed three trials of functional reach-to-grasp. The amount of variability was quantified by computing the standard deviation of shoulder, elbow, wrist and index finger flexion/extension joint angles. The temporal structure of variability was determined by calculating approximate entropy in shoulder, elbow, wrist and index finger flexion/extension joint angles.

Findings: Individuals with stroke demonstrated greater standard deviations and significantly reduced approximate entropy values as compared to controls. Furthermore, motor impairments and kinematics demonstrated moderate to strong correlations with temporal structure of variability.

Interpretation: Changes in the temporal structure of variability in …

Climate Change Meets The Law Of The Horse, J.B. Ruhl, James Salzman Feb 2013

Climate Change Meets The Law Of The Horse, J.B. Ruhl, James Salzman

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The climate change policy debate has only recently turned its full attention to adaptation - how to address the impacts of climate change we have already begun to experience and that will likely increase over time. Legal scholars have in turn begun to explore how the many different fields of law will and should respond. During this nascent period, one overarching question has gone unexamined: how will the legal system as a whole organize around climate change adaptation? Will a new distinct field of climate change adaptation law and policy emerge, or will legal institutions simply work away at the …

Nanotechnology has enthused excessive expectations in recent years, particularly in the biology and biomedical fields. Carbon-coated metallic nanomagnets reveal significant physicochemical properties, which are referred to as superparamagnetism, that when designed appropriately can be utilized to generate novel diagnostic and therapeutic applications for a wide range of biologically hazardous species. Schistosomiasis is a chronic parasitic disease that can infect both humans and animals, particularly cattle. It is caused by a trematode blood fluke of the genus Schistosoma which belong to the schistosomatidae family. At least 200 million individuals are infected in 75 countries while 600 million people are exposed to …

Protein Control Of S-Nitrosothiol Reactivity: Interplay Of Antagonistic Resonance Structures, Marat R. Talipov, Qadir K. Timerghazin Feb 2013

Protein Control Of S-Nitrosothiol Reactivity: Interplay Of Antagonistic Resonance Structures, Marat R. Talipov, Qadir K. Timerghazin

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

There is currently great interest in S-nitrosothiols (RSNOs) because formation of protein-based RSNOs—protein S-nitrosation—has been recently recognized as a major pathway of the biological function of nitric oxide, NO. Despite the growing number of S-nitrosated proteins identified in vivo, enzymatic processes that control reactions of biological RSNOs are still not well understood. In this article, we use a range of models to computationally demonstrate that specific interactions of RSNOs with charged and polar residues in proteins can result in dramatic modification of RSNO structure, stability, and reactivity. This unprecedented sensitivity of the −SNO group toward interactions with …

How To Analyse Seed Germination Data Using Statistical Timeto- Event Analysis: Non-Parametric And Semi-Parametric Methods, James Mcnair, Anusha Sunkara, Daniel Forbish Feb 2013

How To Analyse Seed Germination Data Using Statistical Timeto- Event Analysis: Non-Parametric And Semi-Parametric Methods, James Mcnair, Anusha Sunkara, Daniel Forbish

Peer-reviewed scientific publications

Seed germination experiments are conducted in a wide variety of biological disciplines. Numerous methods of analysing the resulting data have been proposed, most of which fall into three classes: intuition-based germination indexes, classical nonlinear regression analysis and time-to-event analysis (also known as survival analysis, failure-time analysis and reliability analysis). This paper briefly reviews all three of these classes, and argues that time-to-event analysis has important advantages over the other methods but has been underutilized to date. It also reviews in detail the types of time-to-event analysis that are most useful in analysing seed germination data with standard statistical software. These …

Credit Scoring Using Machine Learning, Kenneth Kennedy Feb 2013

Credit Scoring Using Machine Learning, Kenneth Kennedy

Doctoral

For financial institutions and the economy at large, the role of credit scoring in lending decisions cannot be overemphasised. An accurate and well-performing credit scorecard allows lenders to control their risk exposure through the selective allocation of credit based on the statistical analysis of historical customer data. This thesis identifies and investigates a number of specific challenges that occur during the development of credit scorecards. Four main contributions are made in this thesis. First, we examine the performance of a number supervised classification techniques on a collection of imbalanced credit scoring datasets. Class imbalance occurs when there are significantly fewer …

Critical Appraisal Of Axitinib In The Treatment Of Advanced Renal Cell Carcinoma, J Ansari, Sa Hussain, J Glaholm, A Ansari

Peninsula Medical School

A growing understanding of the biology of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has led to the development and US Food and Drug Administration approval of seven new molecular targeted agents over the past 7 years. Axitinib is a potent, selective, second-generation inhibitor of vascular endothelial growth factor receptors and the latest to join the armamentarium of drugs available for the treatment of metastatic RCC. Despite recent advances in the development of molecular targeted agents for metastatic RCC, the ideal sequencing of these agents remains unclear.

Revitalizing The Patent System To Incentivize Pharmaceutical Innovation: The Potential Of Claims With Means-Plus-Function Clauses , Wanli (Lily) Tang

Duke Law Journal

The pharmaceutical industry relies on innovation. However, many innovative firms are cutting their research and development investments and seeing their new product pipelines dry up, due in part to a lack of sufficient patent protection. This Note identifies two major factors that have caused this inadequacy in patent protection. First, pharmaceutical patents are challenged early and often by generic manufacturers, as encouraged by the 1984 Hatch-Waxman Act. Second, the scope of pharmaceutical-patents is sometimes unduly restrained due to limited application of the doctrine of equivalents. Consequently, pharmaceutical patents, especially drug-product patents, are easily designed around and cannot offer the protection …
