International Dimensions Of Discrimination And Violence Against Girls: A Human Rights Perspective, Yvonne Rafferty
International Dimensions Of Discrimination And Violence Against Girls: A Human Rights Perspective, Yvonne Rafferty
Journal of International Women's Studies
In many cultures, being born female can consign the girl child to the peripheries of society where her safety is denied and her human rights are routinely violated. At each and every stage of development, girls are more likely than boys to confront a host of disadvantages associated with discrimination and violence, although the social norms and cultural rules that influence girls are most intensely felt as she struggles to develop into adulthood. At the onset of puberty, or even before, some girls are pulled out of school and forced into early marriage and high-risk pregnancy. Others become victims of …

The Ancestral Activation Promiscuity Of Adp-Glucose Pyrophosphorylases From Oxygenic Photosynthetic Organisms, Misty L. Kuhn, Carlos M. Figueroa, Alberto A. Iglesias, Miguel Ballicora
Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Background
ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (ADP-Glc PPase) catalyzes the first committed step in the synthesis of glycogen in bacteria and starch in algae and plants. In oxygenic photosynthetic organisms, ADP-Glc PPase is mainly activated by 3-phosphoglycerate (3-PGA) and to a lesser extent by other metabolites. In this work, we analyzed the activation promiscuity of ADP-Glc PPase subunits from the cyanobacterium Anabaena PCC 7120, the green alga Ostreococcus tauri, and potato (Solanum tuberosum) tuber by comparing a specificity constant for 3-PGA, fructose-1,6-bisphosphate (FBP), fructose-6-phosphate, and glucose-6-phosphate.
Results
The 3-PGA specificity constant for the enzymes from Anabaena (homotetramer), O. tauri, …

Extinction Hazards In Experimental Daphnia Magna Populations: Effects Of Genotype Diversity And Environmental Variation, John D. Robinson, John P. Wares, John M. Drake
Extinction Hazards In Experimental Daphnia Magna Populations: Effects Of Genotype Diversity And Environmental Variation, John D. Robinson, John P. Wares, John M. Drake
Publications and Research
Extinction is ubiquitous in natural systems and the ultimate fate of all biological populations. However, the factors that contribute to population extinction are still poorly understood, particularly genetic diversity and composition. A laboratory experiment was conducted to examine the influences of environmental variation and genotype diversity on persistence in experimental Daphnia magna populations. Populations were initiated in two blocks with one, two, three, or six randomly selected and equally represented genotypes, fed and checked for extinction daily, and censused twice weekly over a period of 170 days. Our results show no evidence for an effect of the number of genotypes …
Household Task Delegation Among High-Fertility Forager-Horticulturalists Of Lowland Bolivia, Jonathan Stieglitz, Michael Gurven, Hillard Kaplan, Paul L. Hooper
Household Task Delegation Among High-Fertility Forager-Horticulturalists Of Lowland Bolivia, Jonathan Stieglitz, Michael Gurven, Hillard Kaplan, Paul L. Hooper
ESI Publications
Human kin cooperation is universal, leading researchers to label humans as “cooperative breeders.” Despite widespread interest in human cooperation, there has been no systematic study of how household economic decision making occurs. We document age and sex profiles of task delegation by parents to children ages 4–18 among Bolivian forager-horticulturalists. We test for sex differences in the probability of delegation and examine whether tasks are more likely delegated as household labor demand increases. We also test whether food acquisition tasks are more likely delegated to higher producers. We find mixed support for the prediction that girls are more likely delegated domestic …

Comparison Of Risk Of Radiogenic Second Cancer Following Photon And Proton Craniospinal Irradiation For A Pediatric Medulloblastoma Patient, Rui Zhang, Rebecca M. Howell, Annelise Giebeler, Phillip J. Taddei, Anita Mahajan, Wayne D. Newhauser
Faculty Publications
Pediatric patients who received radiation therapy are at risk of developing side effects such as radiogenic second cancer. We compared proton and photon therapies in terms of the predicted risk of second cancers for a 4 year old medulloblastoma patient receiving craniospinal irradiation (CSI). Two CSI treatment plans with 23.4 Gy or Gy (RBE) prescribed dose were computed: a three-field 6 MV photon therapy plan and a four-field proton therapy plan. The primary doses for both plans were determined using a commercial treatment planning system. Stray radiation doses for proton therapy were determined from Monte Carlo simulations, and stray radiation …

Antisocial Behavior From Adolescence To Early Adulthood: Heritability, Stability, And Correlates Using A Longitudinal Twin Sample, Ashley Dibble
Antisocial Behavior From Adolescence To Early Adulthood: Heritability, Stability, And Correlates Using A Longitudinal Twin Sample, Ashley Dibble
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the heritability, stability, and outcomes of antisocial behavior from adolescence into adulthood in a longitudinal twin sample. Specifically, the genetic and environmental influences on conduct disorder, adult antisocial behavior, and alcohol dependence were examined. The influence of genes and environment on the relationship between these disorders was also examined. The study utilized a subset of FinnTwin12, a population-based twin study that consists of five consecutive birth cohorts. The subsample consisted of 1035 twin pairs (N = 2070) and of that 2070, 1854 completed the intensive interview at age 14. At age 22, …

Elastomers are increasingly used as engineering materials due to their high manufacturability, low weight, low cost and excellent mechanical properties. During the service, elastomer degradation can occur as the result of interaction with the environment. In the case of exposure to aggressive liquids or solvents such as palm biodiesel, degradation in the form of swelling can occur which leads to a reduction in its properties. Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) is one type of elastomers which is widely used where high oil resistance is required such as in automotive seals, gaskets, or other items subject to contact with oils. The objective …

Estimated Losses Of Plant Biodiversity Across The U.S. From Historical N Deposition From 1985—2010., Christopher M. Clark, Philip E. Morefield, Frank S. Gilliam, Linda H. Pardo
Biological Sciences Faculty Research
Although nitrogen (N) deposition is a significant threat to herbaceous plant biodiversity worldwide, it is not a new stressor for many developed regions. Only recently has it become possible to estimate historical impacts nationally for the United States. We used 26 years (1985–2010) of deposition data, with ecosystem-specific functional responses from local field experiments and a national critical loads (CL) database, to generate scenario-based estimates of herbaceous species loss. Here we show that, in scenarios using the low end of the CL range, N deposition exceeded critical loads over 0.38, 6.5, 13.1, 88.6, and 222.1 million ha for the Mediterranean …

Adult Attachment And Coregulation Of Stress In Romantic Couples, Daniel L. Hall
Adult Attachment And Coregulation Of Stress In Romantic Couples, Daniel L. Hall
Open Access Theses
In moments of stress, adults often turn to their romantic partners as regulatory agents. Literature suggests that qualities of one’s relationship to their romantic partner will influence the magnitude of one’s physiological activation during moments of stress. Both attachment theory and findings to date suggest that insecure attachment is predictive of greater reactivity to stress. Moreover, whether the HPA-axis activity of a romantic partner - versus that of a stranger - who is present influences one’s physiological arousal during moments of acute stress, called coregulation, is largely unknown. This study tested the effects of physiological coregulation in romantic partners using …
