Overfishing: Economic Policies In Finite Resource Biological Pools, Abdullah Nasser Feb 2013

Overfishing: Economic Policies In Finite Resource Biological Pools, Abdullah Nasser

Undergraduate Economic Review

Common-property fishing is a classic example of the tragedy of the commons. Driven by competition, rational fishermen are forced to overfish to maintain marketplace viability. This shortsighted strategy will lead to the depletion of the common resource pool, and ultimately the destruction of the local fishing industry. In this paper, we present a dynamic differential system of a finite-resource fishing pool to model choices faced by average fishermen. We show that the situation mirrors a Prisonor’s Dilemma on the short- and long-terms, where overfishing is always the dominant Nash equilibrium strategy. Additionally, we use the model to analyze a multitude …

Sex-Specific Correlations Of Individual Heterozygosity, Parasite Load, And Scalation Asymmetry In A Sexually Dichromatic Lizard, Pei-Jen L. Shaner, Ying-Ru Chen, Jhan-Wei Lin, Jason J. Kolbe, Si-Min Lin Feb 2013

Sex-Specific Correlations Of Individual Heterozygosity, Parasite Load, And Scalation Asymmetry In A Sexually Dichromatic Lizard, Pei-Jen L. Shaner, Ying-Ru Chen, Jhan-Wei Lin, Jason J. Kolbe, Si-Min Lin

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Heterozygosity-fitness correlations (HFCs) provide insights into the genetic bases of individual fitness variation in natural populations. However, despite decades of study, the biological significance of HFCs is still under debate. In this study, we investigated HFCs in a large population of the sexually dimorphic lizard Takydromus viridipunctatus (Lacertidae). Because of the high prevalence of parasitism from trombiculid mites in this lizard, we expect individual fitness (i.e., survival) to decrease with increasing parasite load. Furthermore, because morphological asymmetry is likely to influence individuals' mobility (i.e., limb asymmetry) and male biting ability during copulation (i.e., head asymmetry) in this species, we also …

Investigation Of Factors Affecting Protein-Silicone Oil Interactions, Nitin Dixit Feb 2013

Investigation Of Factors Affecting Protein-Silicone Oil Interactions, Nitin Dixit

Doctoral Dissertations

Silicone oil, a lubricant in pharmaceutical containers, has been implicated as a risk factor for protein formulations because of its tendency to cause protein aggregation and/or particulate generation. Due to a lack of published data in this area, it is not clear as to what extent this risk can be generalized across protein pharmaceuticals. A fundamental understanding of the factors that influence protein-silicone oil interactions can help in better understanding the implied risks to drug product stability. The technique of quartz crystal microbalance with silicone coated quartz crystals, mimicking the lubricated syringe surface, was used for the studies. The frequency …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Shallow submarine gas vents in Levante Bay, Vulcano Island (Italy), emit around 3.6t CO2 per day providing a natural laboratory for the study of biogeochemical processes related to seabed CO2 leaks and ocean acidification. The main physico-chemical parameters (T, pH and Eh) were measured at more than 70 stations with 40 seawater samples were collected for chemical analyses. The main gas vent area had high concentrations of dissolved hydrothermal gases, low pH and negative redox values all of which returned to normal seawater values at distances of about 400m from the main vents. Much of the bay around the vents …

Toward A Greater Understanding Of The Impact Of Anger On Attitudes Toward War: A Consideration Of Three Hypotheses, John Paul Schott Feb 2013

Toward A Greater Understanding Of The Impact Of Anger On Attitudes Toward War: A Consideration Of Three Hypotheses, John Paul Schott

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Previous research indicates that emotion is an important factor in shaping attitudes towards war. Specifically, studies have shown that the experience of anger leads to increased support for war. However, little is known about the mechanisms and boundary conditions of the anger-war attitudes effect. In this dissertation, I propose three potential mechanisms: time perspective, changes in risk perception and preference, and cognitive control. Results indicated risk perception and preference and cognitive control were not related to either anger or war attitudes. The consideration of future consequences: CFC) scale, used to measure time perspective, revealed only weak effects as a mediator. …

Landscape Genetics Of Leaf-Toed Geckos In The Tropical Dry Forest Of Northern Mexico, Christopher Blair, Victor H. Jimenez-Arcos, Fausto R. Mendez De La Cruz, Robert W. Murphy

Publications and Research

Habitat fragmentation due to both natural and anthropogenic forces continues to threaten the evolution and maintenance of biological diversity. This is of particular concern in tropical regions that are experiencing elevated rates of habitat loss. Although less well-studied than tropical rain forests, tropical dry forests (TDF) contain an enormous diversity of species and continue to be threatened by anthropogenic activities including grazing and agriculture. However, little is known about the processes that shape genetic connectivity in species inhabiting TDF ecosystems. We adopt a landscape genetic approach to understanding functional connectivity for leaf-toed geckos (Phyllodactylus tuberculosus) at multiple sites …
