Functional Segregation Of The Entopallium In Pigeons, Robert G. Cook, Tadd B. Patton, Toru Shimizu
Functional Segregation Of The Entopallium In Pigeons, Robert G. Cook, Tadd B. Patton, Toru Shimizu
Psychology Faculty Publications
In birds, the entopallium is the primary telencephalic target of the major visual ascending route called the tectofugal pathway. Often functionally compared to the primate geniculo-striate pathway and its subsequent telencephalic (cortical) regions, the latter processes visual information in a parallel fashion in terms of anatomy, physiology, and function. Little is known, however, about the exact mechanism of whether or how information is segregated or integrated in the avian tectofugal pathway including the telencephalon. Testing four pigeons, we examined whether or not color, form, and motion information is selectively processed by different portions of the entopallium. Each learned three distinct …

Anatomical differences were observed between sexes of P. samuelis. We measured the major cheliped and carapace lengths of hermit crabs caught off the coast of Southern California and found that male chelipeds were significantly larger relative to their carapace length than female chelipeds. Average male cheliped:carapace ratios were 1.86 while average female cheliped:carapace ratios were 1.32. We predicted that males and females would respond differently to cue waters created from their own sex. Females were exposed to female cue treatment odors and males were exposed to male cue treatment odors. We recorded hermit crabs exposed to cue treatment waters and …
Regulation Of Igfbp-5 And Osteoblast Functions By Nuclear Factor I, Laura A. Perez-Casellas
Regulation Of Igfbp-5 And Osteoblast Functions By Nuclear Factor I, Laura A. Perez-Casellas
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF) system is a major target of GC inhibition in bone. We found that GCs inhibit expression of IGF binding protein-5 (IGFBP5) which binds IGFs and stimulates osteoblast activity by IGF dependent and independent mechanisms. GC-induced inhibition of IGFPB5 promoter activity was mediated by a composite response element that has binding sites for transcription factor activator protein 2 (AP-2) and nuclear factor I (NFI). The work in this dissertation identifies the NFI gene family as an important regulator of IGFBP-5 transcription primarily in human, as well as murine osteoblasts. The mechanism of IGFBP5 gene regulation involves …

In 1806, Richmond entrepreneurs built the city’s first theater, the New Theater, at the present-day juncture of Thirteenth and Broad streets. This theater was likely the first in Virginia, and Richmonders of all colors, classes, and genders attended, although a three-tiered system of seating and ticket pricing separated attendees by race and class. Wealthy white patrons paid a dollar or more to sit in boxes thoroughly separated from the rest of the audience. Their middle and working class counterparts paid two or three quarters for orchestra seating. For a quarter or less, the city’s poorest citizens, any people of color, …

The anti-AIDS drug rilpivirine undergoes conformational changes to bind HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT), which is an essential enzyme for the replication of HIV. These changes allow it to retain potency against mutations that otherwise would render the enzyme resistant. Here we report that water molecules play an essential role in this binding process. Femtosecond experiments and theory expose the molecular level dynamics of rilpivirine bound to HIV-1 RT. Two nitrile substituents, one on each arm of the drug, are used as vibrational probes of the structural dynamics within the binding pocket. Two-dimensional vibrational echo spectroscopy reveals that one nitrile group …

Lifestyle Interventions To Reduce Obesity And Diabetes, Todd Alan Hagobian, Suzanne Phelan
Kinesiology and Public Health
The majority of US adults are overweight or obese, which is a primary risk factor for type 2 diabetes and other chronic diseases. Recent advances in behavioral treatment of obesity have produced significant short- and longterm weight losses that reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This article reviews key components of effective behavioral treatment interventions, including diet, exercise, and behavioral and psychosocial strategies. The authors review newer treatment modalities that may enhance dissemination (Internet, smartphone) and discuss applications to clinical practice. Practitioners face multiple barriers to effectively delivering lifestyle interventions in today’s health care setting but, …
Assessing The Impact Of Differential Genotyping Errors On Rare Variant Tests Of Association, Morgan Mayer-Jochimsen, Shannon Fast, Nathan L. Tintle
Assessing The Impact Of Differential Genotyping Errors On Rare Variant Tests Of Association, Morgan Mayer-Jochimsen, Shannon Fast, Nathan L. Tintle
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
Genotyping errors are well-known to impact the power and type I error rate in single marker tests of association. Genotyping errors that happen according to the same process in cases and controls are known as non-differential genotyping errors, whereas genotyping errors that occur with different processes in the cases and controls are known as differential genotype errors. For single marker tests, non-differential genotyping errors reduce power, while differential genotyping errors increase the type I error rate. However, little is known about the behavior of the new generation of rare variant tests of association in the presence of genotyping errors. In …

Effective removal of apoptotic cells, particularly apoptotic neutrophils, is essential for the successful resolution of acute inflammatory conditions. In these experiments, we found that whereas interaction between vitronectin and integrins diminished the ability of macrophages to ingest apoptotic cells, interaction between vitronectin with urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) on the surface of apoptotic cells also had equally important inhibitory effects on efferocytosis. Preincubation of vitronectin with plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 eliminated its ability to inhibit phagocytosis of apoptotic cells. Similarly, incubation of apoptotic cells with soluble uPAR or Abs to uPAR significantly diminished efferocytosis. In the setting of LPSinduced ALI, enhanced …

The Transcriptional Regulator Tamr From Streptomyces Coelicolor Controls A Key Step In Central Metabolism During Oxidative Stress, Hao Huang, Anne Grove
Faculty Publications
Summary: Multiple antibiotic resistance regulator (MarR) family transcriptional regulators usually regulate gene activity by responding to specific ligands. Here we show that TamR (trans-aconitate methyltransferase regulator), a MarR homologue from Streptomyces coelicolor, functions in oxidative stress responses to regulate a key step in central metabolism. The gene encoding TamR is oriented divergently from the tam gene, which encodes trans-aconitate methyltransferase. Trans-aconitate methyltransferase methylates trans-aconitate, which is formed when cis-aconitate is released during aconitase-mediated isomerization of citrate to isocitrate; trans-aconitate, but not its methyl ester, is a potent inhibitor of aconitase. We show that TamR binds with high affinity to the …

The semi-aquatic weevil Bagous hydrillae was released during 1991-1996 at 19 sites in 4 states in attempts to control the aquatic weed hydrilla, Hydrilla verticillata. Fourteen of the sites were in Florida, 2 each in Texas and Georgia and one site in Alabama. Over 320,000 adult weevils were included in these releases. Despite the fact that a few adults were recovered as late as 4.5 yr post-release, presence of permanent, self-perpetuating populations was never confirmed. Then, during 2009 adult B. hydrillae were collected in southern Louisiana, at least 580 km from the nearest release site and 13 yr after attempts …

Biological Control Of Common Salvinia (Salvinia Minima) In Louisiana Using Cyrtobagous Salviniae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Katherine A. Parys, Seth J. Johnson
Faculty Publications
Common salvinia, Salvinia minima Baker, is an aquatic invasive fern that obstructs waterways and impacts water quality throughout the southeastern United States. In an effort to establish populations for classical biological control of this weed, the weevil, Cyrtobagous salviniae Calder and Sands, was released at multiple sites across Louisiana. Many of the release sites were lost due to a variety of ecological and anthropological disturbances. In 2008, C. salviniae was found to have successfully overwintered on S. minima in Gramercy, Louisiana. Attack by Cyrtobagous salviniae significantly increased the number of damaged terminal buds and decreased the fresh weight biomass of …

DRU Workshop 2013 Presentations – Disaster Resistant University Workshop: Linking Mitigation and Resilience
As EMS planners and providers, we take many special populations’ needs into account in a disaster - infants, elderly, disabled, and so on - but we should not overlook the critical distinctions in gender-specific care, which are based not only on a woman’s physiological makeup, but within her psychosocial framework. This training session will identify key factors in female-specific care, including 12 risk factors that affect vulnerability, impact, and exposure; PTSD and pain; triage and advocacy; and supplies and services.
Current research points to a pattern of gender differentiation in all areas of the disaster process -preparedness, response, impact, risk …

Microwave Drying Kinetics And Quality Characteristics Of Corn, Songul Gursoy, Ruplal Choudhary, Dennis G. Watson
Articles
In recent years, microwave (MW) drying has gained popularity as an alternative drying method for a wide variety of food and agricultural products because of increasing concerns over product quality and production costs. However, the determination of drying kinetics that accurately describes microwave drying characteristics is crucial for the optimization of operating parameters, performance improvement of the drying system and product quality. The objective of this study was to investigate the drying kinetics and the quality characteristics of corn kernels, especially the effects of different initial moisture contents (18.3%, 26.3%, 34.3% and 42.3% db), MW power levels (70, 175 and …

Rectal microbicides are being developed to prevent new HIV infections in both men and women. We focused our in vivo preclinical efficacy study on rectally-applied tenofovir. BLT humanized mice (n = 43) were rectally inoculated with either the primary isolate HIV-1JRCSF or the MSM-derived transmitted/founder (T/F) virus HIV-1THRO within 30 minutes following treatment with topical 1% tenofovir or vehicle. Under our experimental conditions, in the absence of drug treatment we observed 50% and 60% rectal transmission by HIV-1JRCSF and HIV-1THRO, respectively. Topical tenofovir reduced rectal transmission to 8% (1/12; log rank p = 0.03) for HIV-1JRCSF and 0% (0/6; log …

The Earliest Known Fisher (Mustelidae), A New Species From The Rattlesnake Formation Of Oregon, Joshua X. Samuels, Jennifer Cavin
The Earliest Known Fisher (Mustelidae), A New Species From The Rattlesnake Formation Of Oregon, Joshua X. Samuels, Jennifer Cavin
United States National Park Service: Publications
Fishers are elusive carnivorans, with few occurrences in the fossil record. The origin and early evolution of fishers is unclear, but they likely originated in Asia. A new record of Pekania from the Rattlesnake Formation of Oregon represents the earliest known occurrence of a fisher, more than 5 million years earlier than other records in North America. This specimen has an unambiguous derived trait shared with other members of the genus, an external median rootlet on the upper carnassial. The age of this new find is inferred to be between 7.05 and 7.3 Ma, through radiometric and magnetostratigraphic dating. This …
