Student Perspectives On The Effectiveness Of An Integrated Medical Humanities Course, 'Revelations Of Cancer', Lily Yen-Yu Lin, Wing P. Chan, Nen-Chung Chang

Journal of Medical Education

Background: The goals of medical humanities education are to foster students' perspectives on human experience and develop competences for humane medical care. The existing approaches face limitations such as irrelevance to real-life situations and few opportunities for patient contact during the preclinical years. To facilitate students' personal and professional growth, the instructor sought to develop experiential learning approaches in an integrated medical humanities course, ”Revelations of Cancer.” This paper: (1) introduces these innovative teaching methods; (2) reports on students' learning experiences; and (3) discusses the implications of these teaching experiences. Several of the remarks and articles presented in this symposium have addressed conflicts of interest arising during the provision of legal counsel to individuals who are elderly, including specific conflicts of interest implicated by estate planning, retirement planning, and long-term care planning. Topics examined thus far include conflicts of interest with respect to the application of rules of confidentiality within state rules of professional conduct to elderly clients with impaired decisionmaking capacity; conflicts of interest involving representative payees for Social Security benefits; conflicts of interest in distributions when parents enter into marriages that are unprotected by law; and conflicts of …

This paper is a synthesis of the 2012 Lourie Lecture, framed as a series of questions and responses, and supported by images used in the lecture. I’m going to focus on the growth of this new field called palliative care and will make the connection that the crisis afflicting healthcare in the United States cannot be addressed without widespread scaling and implementation of palliative care across the system.
