Wide Open Fairways, Bradley S. Klein Apr 2013

Wide Open Fairways, Bradley S. Klein

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

In golf the playing field is also landscape, where nature and the shaping of it conspire to test athletic prowess. As golf courses move away from the “big business, pristine lawn” approach of recent times, Bradley S. Klein, a leading expert on golf course design and economics, finds much to contemplate, and much to report, in the way these wide-open spaces function as landscapes that inspire us, stimulate our senses, and reveal the special nature of particular places. A meditation on what makes golf courses compelling landscapes, this is also a personal memoir that follows Klein’s own unique journey across …

The Future Of Geography In Health Policy : The Applicability Of The Dartmouth Atlas To Health Reform In The United States, Catherine Chase Eager Apr 2013

The Future Of Geography In Health Policy : The Applicability Of The Dartmouth Atlas To Health Reform In The United States, Catherine Chase Eager

Honors Theses

Regardless of political ideology, most policy makers agree that the United States health care system is severely flawed and significant reform is crucial.1 However, consensus ends there. Numerous reform efforts have been made over the past few decades, but the only major successful reform has been through the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in March 2010.2 With each reform effort there are many conflicting proposals considered and much controversy arises. The Affordable Care Act, as the law is more commonly called, is a controversial law and does not have unanimous support.3 However, to many, this landmark …

Themes And Narratives Relating To Faith And Healing In The Area Of Durban, South Africa., Natalie Strohmyer

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This project will examine the integration of faith in the healing process through interviews to discover emerging themes. These themes will use narratives, secondary sources, and analysis to delve into some of the questions. Caring for the entirety of a patient is an important role of healthcare and examining the role of faith in healing can illuminate another aspect of the doctor-patient relationship. Faith is very personal and I am interested in looking at the different effects that this has on a person in regards to their outlook on healthcare and the role of the healthcare professional. I would like …

For Patients With Advanced Chronic Illness, Does Enrollment In A Palliative Care Program Promote Healthcare Cost Savings At End-Of Life Compared To Those Not Enrolled In A Palliative Care Program?, Debee L. Stassen

Theses and Dissertations

Background: The recognition that care for the clinically ill, as they advance through the illness trajectory, is expensive and contributes to the health care spending crisis reinforces the need for cost effective programs that address patient goals and preferences, symptom management and coordination of care while continuing to provide high-quality, cost-effective care.

Methods: The objective of this literature review is to determine if enrollment in a palliative care program for patients with advanced chronic illness, promotes healthcare cost savings at end-of life compared to those not enrolled in a palliative care program? Nursing Textbooks: Comparative Representation Of Physicians And Advanced Practice Nurses, Kaitlin Kirby Apr 2013

Nursing Textbooks: Comparative Representation Of Physicians And Advanced Practice Nurses, Kaitlin Kirby

Honors Theses and Capstones

Advanced practice registered nurses are nurses educated with a master’s degree who practice autonomously as well collaboratively with other healthcare professionals to diagnose, treat, and manage patients’ healthcare problems. Undergraduate nursing students often misunderstand the role and responsibilities of advanced practice nurses. As nursing students are cultured in the art and science of nursing, textbooks play an essential role. Therefore in this study, seven best-selling nursing textbooks were examined for content related to APRNs and physicians. Selections from all seven textbooks were collected and analyzed to determine the references to physicians, APRNs, and healthcare providers. APRN selections were less prevalent …

Review Of The Efficacy Of Titratable Oral Mandibular Advancement Devices For The Treatment Of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Illara Moore Apr 2013

Review Of The Efficacy Of Titratable Oral Mandibular Advancement Devices For The Treatment Of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Illara Moore

Theses and Dissertations

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is prevalent throughout the United States and worldwide, and is associated with cardiovascular, pulmonary, and metabolic complications. Despite the strong evidence confining its clinical sequelae, significant barriers to clinical diagnosis and treatment of OSA exist, including under-diagnosis by medical providers and poor patient compliance with CPAP therapy-the current treatment of choice

The purpose of this project was to review the literature of mandibular advancement devices (MADs) as an efficacious alternative treatment for OSA. Randomized controlled trials demonstrate that CPAP is superior in reducing the Apnea-Hypopnea Index, but MADs show a similar impact on daytime sleepiness and …

Reefer Madness To Marijuana And Legalization: Media Exposure And American Attitudes Towards Marijuana (1975-2010), Richard James Stringer Apr 2013

Reefer Madness To Marijuana And Legalization: Media Exposure And American Attitudes Towards Marijuana (1975-2010), Richard James Stringer

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

American attitudes toward marijuana have varied greatly from the time it was criminalized in the 1930's until 2010, and public opinion favoring the legalization of marijuana has steadily risen since 1990. Since the media is purported to have had an impact on the legislation rather than objective risk factors, it is possible that the marijuana epidemic could be the result of a socially constructed moral panic. As such, this study utilized General Social Survey data to examine the relationship between media exposure and attitudes toward the legalization of marijuana from 1975 through 2010, 1975 through 1990, and 1991 through 2010. …

Dead Space, Aimee Michele Hultquist Apr 2013

Dead Space, Aimee Michele Hultquist

Architecture Senior Theses

Deadspace might seem like it would refer to a sequestered location, but it is more of an ephemeral idea. The universality of death as a condition of life means that deadspace exists across all cultures and even transcends human creation. Deadspaces can be for no one and for everyone, or they can be open only to particular constituencies. A cemetery may be open to everyone, or it may be accessible only to those who practice a certain faith; it may even be a place so feared that no one is to be there except for the dead. A nuclear contamination …

Streamlining Patient's Wishes: Analyzing Improvements For The Implementation Of Advance Directives, William A. Wallington Apr 2013

Streamlining Patient's Wishes: Analyzing Improvements For The Implementation Of Advance Directives, William A. Wallington

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to complete a review of literature and determine methods providers can use to increase the implementation rates of advance directives (ADs). A growing elderly population coupled with an increase in chronic disease is making the implementation of advance directives more important than ever, yet the percentage of completed advance directives continues to be poor. Utilizing a review of evidence-based research, barriers to implementation were identified. This includes communication, timing and setting, appropriate end-of-life care and utilization of Provider Order for Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST) to provide a detailed format therefore lessening miscommunication. A pamphlet …

Telehealth Group Interactions In The Hospice Setting: Assessing Technical Quality Across Platforms, George Demiris, Debra Parker Oliver, Robin L. Kruse, Elaine M. Wittenberg-Lyles

Communication Faculty Publications

Objective: This study aims to examine the technical quality of videoconferencing used in hospice to engage caregivers as “virtual” members of interdisciplinary team meetings and their impressions of telehealth. Furthermore, it aims to compare the quality of plain old telephone service (POTS) and Web-based videoconferencing and provide recommendations for assessing video quality for telehealth group interactions.

Materials and Methods: Data were obtained from an ongoing randomized clinical trial exploring Web-based videoconferencing and a completed prospective study of POTS-based videoconferencing in hospice. For the assessment of the technical quality, an observation form was used. Exit interviews with caregivers assessed impressions with …
