An Examination Of Felony Case Processing In The Circuit Court Of Cook County, 2000-2012, Don Stemen
An Examination Of Felony Case Processing In The Circuit Court Of Cook County, 2000-2012, Don Stemen
Criminal Justice & Criminology: Faculty Publications & Other Works
This research bulletin provides an examination of felony cases filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County between 2000 and 2012. The examination considers trends in the volume of felony cases filed, the percent of cases disposed of within twelve months of filing, and the average length of time to dispose of cases. The analyses indicate that the number of felony cases filed in Cook County has decreased over the last decade and the percentage of felony cases disposed of within 12 months of filing has increased during the same period. However, the time to case disposition has increased -- …

Mcjobs And Pieces Of Flair: Linking Mcdonaldization To Alienating Work, Linda Ann Treiber
Mcjobs And Pieces Of Flair: Linking Mcdonaldization To Alienating Work, Linda Ann Treiber
Faculty Articles
This article offers strategies for teaching about rationality, bureaucracy, and social change using George Ritzer’s The McDonaldization of Society and its ideas about efficiency, predictability, calculability, and control. Student learning is facilitated using a series of strategies: making the familiar strange, explaining McDonaldization, self-investigation and discovery, and exploring and implementing alternatives. Through assignments, class exercises, and films, students contextualize modernity and its unintended negative consequences by viewing McDonaldization though the lenses of work and jobs. These strategies provide a framework to help students understand key concepts, critique McDonaldization, and formulate positive ways to cope with Weber’s iron cage.

Making Matters Worse: The Safe Streets And Communities Act And The Ongoing Crisis Of Indigenous Over-Incarceration, Ryan Newell
Making Matters Worse: The Safe Streets And Communities Act And The Ongoing Crisis Of Indigenous Over-Incarceration, Ryan Newell
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
The Safe Streets and Communities Act (SSCA), a recent and wide-reaching piece of the Conservative Party of Canada’s tough-on-crime agenda, will exacerbate the ongoing crisis of Indigenous over-incarceration. In this article, I review the extensive literature that addresses the causes of Indigenous over-representation in the Canadian criminal justice system before assessing the impact of R v Gladue, nearly fifteen years after the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision. I analyze how the SSCA will restrict courts’ resort to Gladue, thus resulting in the incarceration of increasing numbers of Indigenous people. I then develop one avenue of constitutional challenge to the SSCA’s …

An Ounce Of Pretrial Prevention Is Worth More Than A Pound Of Post-Conviction Cure: Untethering Federal Pretrial Criminal Procedure From Due Process Standards Of Review, Jordan Gross
Faculty Law Review Articles
Some Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure cover purely technical matters. Some Rules, however, cover procedures with constitutional dimensions. When a federal court is interpreting a Rule that has a companion constitutional doctrine, an issue arises as to whether the Rule’s requirements are co-extensive with the constitutional protections defined by federal case law, or whether the Rule provides federal defendants a higher level of pretrial procedural protection than a post-conviction due process standard. Federal courts have been inconsistent in identifying and resolving this question of constitutional equivalency. In interpreting some pretrial Criminal Rules, federal courts make a clear distinction between the …

Situational Awareness: Reframing Within Fire Service Culture, Martha Dow, Len Garis, Larry Thomas
Situational Awareness: Reframing Within Fire Service Culture, Martha Dow, Len Garis, Larry Thomas
Publications and Research
There is increasing attention being paid to better understanding and consequently decreasing the incidence of on-the-job injuries and deaths within the fire service across North America. Heightening situational awareness is being explored as the most critical factor in maintaining the safety of participants in high risk, low frequency events. Situational awareness is generally defined as “understanding the current environment and being able to accurately anticipate future problems to enable effective action”. Situational awareness is cited as a critical factor in most research exploring safety in fire suppression activities and in many cases the “No. 1 factor identified by firefighters filing …

Efficacy Of Modified Cognitive Interviewing, Compared To Human Judgments In Detecting Deception Related To Bio-Threat Activities, Charles A. Morgan Dr., Yaron G. Rabinowitz Dr., Deborah Hilts, Craig E. Weller, Vladimir Coric Dr.
Journal of Strategic Security
National security professionals have few scientifically valid methods for detecting deception in people who deny being involved in illicit activities relevant to national security. Numerous detecting deception studies have demonstrated that the Modified Cognitive Interviewing (MCI) method is one such method - yielding detecting deception rates (i.e. 80-85%) that are significantly above those achieved by chance (i.e. 50%) or by human judgments (i.e. 54-56%). To date, however, no MCI studies have involved dilemmas of ethological interest to national security professionals. This project begins to address this gap in the scientific literature. In it, we compared the efficacy of MCI to …
Strengthening Intelligence Education With Information-Processing And Knowledge-Organization Competencies, Yejun Wu
Journal of Strategic Security
This paper studies the weaknesses of intelligence-education curriculum in the United States from a Library and Information Science perspective. Intelligence information processing is a separate step in the traditional intelligence cycle; however, information-processing competencies are often included in the intelligence collection and analysis competencies in the Intelligence Community. A study of the websites of the intelligence-education programs in the major 27 intelligence-education institutions in the United States reveals that information processing is often implicitly included in an intelligence analysis or collection course; and only three universities offer such courses that include information-processing components. Only one university has been found to …

Blaming The Victim: Effects Of Victim And Respondent Characteristics On Attribution Of Blame To Rape Victims, Richard Allen Measel
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
This study examines rape myths and the attribution of blame in instances of rape. This research builds upon previous studies that examined attribution of blame based the effects of gender, attitudes toward rape victims, and race. This study explores the impact of the seriousness of the attack on attributions of blame. It also examines the influence of the level of similarity between the respondent and the victim on attributions of blame. Data was obtained from 408 undergraduate respondents enrolled at a university. Respondents completed an online survey that included the Attitudes Towards Rape Victims Scale and a vignette of a …
The Fourth Amendment's National Security Exception: Its History And Limits, L. Rush Atkinson
The Fourth Amendment's National Security Exception: Its History And Limits, L. Rush Atkinson
Vanderbilt Law Review
Since 2001, federal prosecutors have indicted and convicted hundreds of defendants for terrorism, espionage, and other national security crimes.' And for every prosecution, there are dozens of investigations into foreign threats that never result in a trial. Between 2001 and 2010, for example, the federal government obtained 16,306 foreign intelligence warrants in the course of its security operations. Between 2004 and 2011, the Federal Bureau of Investigations ("FBI") issued 119,192 National Security Letters for records deemed to be pertinent to national security investigations.
Despite these numbers, security investigations and prosecutions proceed on uncertain constitutional footing. The rights of terrorism suspects …
Bringing Functional Family Probation Services To The Community: A Qualitative Case Study, Denise Lynmarie Austin
Bringing Functional Family Probation Services To The Community: A Qualitative Case Study, Denise Lynmarie Austin
Dissertations and Theses
In March 2011, Multnomah County's Juvenile Services Division (JSD) in Portland, Oregon implemented a new program model called Functional Family Probation Services, a case management model based on the principles of Functional Family Therapy. Under this model JSD Juvenile Court Counselors deliver Functional Family Probation Services to medium and high-risk youth on probation; both to the youth and their family in their home. This qualitative case study examined the extent to which the Juvenile Court Counselors and Community Justice Managers implemented Functional Family Probation Service's components and recorded their opinions regarding Functional Family Probation Services as a case management model. …
