Evidence Synthesis Strategies To Enhance Evidence-Based Practice, Susan Mace Weeks Oct 2013

Evidence Synthesis Strategies To Enhance Evidence-Based Practice, Susan Mace Weeks

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on: Monday, July 22, 2013: Evidence-based practice requires multiple steps including the synthesis of evidence. Despite its importance, the synthesis of evidence is often a misunderstood step. Without rigorous evidence synthesis, the practice guidance developed may be misguided. This presentation will define evidence synthesis, differentiate evidence synthesis from a summarization of evidence, and will describe forms of synthesis useful to researchers, educators, and practicing clinicians. Evidence synthesis is not a mere summarization of research studies. Rather, it is a grouping and collating of evidence that creates new knowledge. Evidence synthesis seeks to answer two significant questions, 'What is …

Reducing Recidivism Among Youthful Offenders: Evidence-Based Practice Strategies, Kate Shade Oct 2013

Reducing Recidivism Among Youthful Offenders: Evidence-Based Practice Strategies, Kate Shade

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on: Wednesday, July 24, 2013:

In the United States, housing youth in prison with an orientation toward punishment is becoming a thing of the past. Instead, the justice system is returning to a rehabilitation model (Mendel, 2010). However, the U.S. continues to incarcerate more youth than any other country in the world (Raphael, 2011). Effective treatment programs are limited in number and are costly. A meta-analysis of interventions for youthful offenders determined that greater than 50% of the juveniles incarcerated in the U.S. return to the justice system as adults (Lipsey, 2009). The purpose of this presentation is …

Impact Of Co-Occurring Psychiatric Disorders And Traumatic Brain Injury On Speech-Language Treatment: Speech-Language Pathologists’ Perspectives, Janis Whitney Neal Oct 2013

Impact Of Co-Occurring Psychiatric Disorders And Traumatic Brain Injury On Speech-Language Treatment: Speech-Language Pathologists’ Perspectives, Janis Whitney Neal

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Previous studies have associated traumatic brain injury (TBI) with higher rates of psychiatric disorders. This study investigated speech-language pathologists’ (SLPs) perspectives on the prevalence of co-occurring psychiatric disorders in the TBI population and its impact on speech-language treatment. Interviews were conducted with twelve SLPs working with a TBI population. Results revealed a lack of standard measures to assist SLPs in distinguishing between the symptoms of psychiatric disorders versus the neuropsychiatric symptoms of TBI. Also, results indicated the heavy reliance on a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive and individualized treatment for the TBI clientele, and the negative consequences of untreated psychiatric …

Victimization Experiences And Adolescent Substance Use: Does The Type And Degree Of Victimization Matter?, Gillian M. Pichevsky, Abigail A. Fagan, Emily M. Wright Oct 2013

Victimization Experiences And Adolescent Substance Use: Does The Type And Degree Of Victimization Matter?, Gillian M. Pichevsky, Abigail A. Fagan, Emily M. Wright

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Evidence indicates an association between victimization and adolescent substance use, but the exact nature of this relationship remains unclear. Some research focuses solely on the consequences of experiencing indirect victimization (e.g., witnessing violence), others examine direct victimization (e.g., being personally victimized), and still others combine both forms of victimization without assessing the relative impact of each on substance use. Furthermore, many of these studies only assess these relationships in the short-term using cross-sectional data. This study uses data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN) to explore the impact of experiencing only indirect victimization, only direct victimization, …
