Youth Development Through Service: A Quality Assessment Of The Youthbuild Americorps Program, Kathleen A. Tomberg
Youth Development Through Service: A Quality Assessment Of The Youthbuild Americorps Program, Kathleen A. Tomberg
Publications and Research
The YouthBuild AmeriCorps program serves youth facing a multitude of challenges, including a lack of education and job skills, community disengagement, and economic disadvantage. This program assessment found that after engaging with the YouthBuild AmeriCorps model, participants made significant, positive changes in their outlook on service, personal responsibility, and community orientation. More specifically, after participating in the program, they deepened their personal commitments to service, began to develop a sense of personal worth and reliability, became more connected with their communities, and started to develop more trust in larger social institutions. These encouraging findings suggest that YouthBuild AmeriCorps is succeeding …
Ambition, Electoral Competition, And Legislative Representation In Mexico, 1997-2009, Yann P. Kerevel
Ambition, Electoral Competition, And Legislative Representation In Mexico, 1997-2009, Yann P. Kerevel
Political Science ETDs
Explaining legislative behavior in the Mexico represents a puzzle given the state of existing theory. Despite a ban on consecutive reelection, Mexican legislators engage in many behaviors thought to be the result of seeking reelection. Furthermore, existing theories of progressive ambition also cannot explain the tendency of many Mexican legislators to seek less prestigious offices after serving for a single term. This dissertation develops a novel theory of political ambition that accounts for the movement up and down the career ladder by Mexican federal legislators, and highlights several behavioral implications of the pursuit of political careers in a context where …
Exploring The Phenomenon Of Self-Mutilation Among Adult Males In A Correctional Setting: A Quantitative And Qualitative Inquiry, Yolanda Morales
Exploring The Phenomenon Of Self-Mutilation Among Adult Males In A Correctional Setting: A Quantitative And Qualitative Inquiry, Yolanda Morales
Nursing ETDs
The overall aim of this mixed method inquiry was to increase understanding of self-mutilation by adult males in a correctional setting. This study explored the self-mutilating attributes such as type and motivational factors, to identify factors associated with self-mutilation among adult males in a correctional setting. Self-mutilation has classically been associated with adolescents and females; however, behind the walls of many correctional institutions, adult males are engaging in self-mutilating behavior. Self-mutilation by this population can have serious health consequences, impact the safety of the institution, and also have fiscal consequences. While this remains a serious forensic issue, there is a …

Voices From Behind Bars: A Working Alliance?, Mariaimee Gonzalez
Dissertations
Prisons have become a primary location for mental health services, yet little research has been done to investigate the clinical relationships experienced by a growing population of female inmates. This qualitative study was based upon intersectional theory and explored the experiences of 12 female inmates through in-depth interviews about receiving mental health services in prison and the quality of the working alliance with mental health professionals. Additionally, suggestions for improving mental health services in the prison system are documented. Through 12 semi-structured interviews the researcher listened to narratives of these participants and their mental health journeys. Using open and axial …

Confronting Coventurers: Coconspirator Hearsay, Sir Walter Raleigh, And The Sixth Amendment Confrontation Clause, Ben Trachtenberg
Confronting Coventurers: Coconspirator Hearsay, Sir Walter Raleigh, And The Sixth Amendment Confrontation Clause, Ben Trachtenberg
Florida Law Review
Using the example of a recent major terrorism prosecution, this Article addresses “coventurer hearsay” in the context of the ongoing Confrontation Clause debate concerning the United States Supreme Court’s decision in Crawford v. Washington. Courts have recently begun admitting hearsay evidence pursuant to a revisionist interpretation of the coconspirator statement exception to the hearsay rule. Under the new “lawful joint venture” theory, a hearsay statement may be admitted as a coconspirator statement if made in furtherance of a “joint undertaking”—defined as pretty much any cooperative activity—even if the “conspiracy” is not illegal. Because this new interpretation of an old …
