Abandoning Objective Indicia, Ian Farrell
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
The Supreme Court recently held, in Miller v. Alabama, that mandatory life without parole for juveniles violates the Cruel and Unusual Punishment Clause of the Eighth Amendment. This Essay argues that, although the case’s result is important, Miller will gain long-term significance not because of what it holds, but because of what it heralds: a fundamental shift in the Court’s Eighth Amendment methodology—specifically, a move away from using “objective indicia” to determine society’s evolving standards. The Essay suggests that the Supreme Court replace its objective indicia analysis with the application of heightened scrutiny to “suspect categories” of punishment, namely, categories …

University of Connecticut, 2013
Abstract
Analyses of hypervariable segments of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) are currently
being used for forensic analysis, human molecular genetics, evolutionary biology,
human migration studies and recovery operations in identifying deceased persons,
both ancient and modern. Mitochondrial DNA analysis offers a unique maternal
ancestral view of an individual’s molecular pin code, through typically examining
the hypervariable segments and sampling the areas of hypervariable region 1
(HV1) and hypervariable region 2 (HV2). The goal of this project is to revisit …

Utilizing Social Control Theory, this study explores the role of participation in After School Programs, mentoring relationships, and commitment to school in reducing adolescent delinquency. This study uses local survey data of 556 youth attending Boys and Girls Clubs collected from 2010-2012. The negative binomial regression results indicate that increased club attendance is associated with reduced delinquency. This effect is mediated by the presence of a mentor and by the youths' commitment to school.

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of Two Alternative Middle Schools: How Prepared Are Students For High School Success?, Theresa Kilmer
Theses and Dissertations
This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of alternative middle school programs utilizing a longitudinal, mixed methods design and was driven by research questions which analyzed trends in attendance, discipline, and Standard of Learning test pass rates in history and science for 8th, 9th, and 10th grade. It also examined student perceptions concerning preparedness for high school, skills previously taught, transition to high school, and relationships with peers and adults. Data on attendance, discipline, and SOL scores were collected from 34 students from the 2009-2010 8th grade cohort who attended one of two alternative middle schools. Attendance data indicated …
