Humane Punishment For Seriously Disordered Offenders: Sentencing Departures And Judicial Control Over Conditions Of Confinement, E. Lea Johnston
Humane Punishment For Seriously Disordered Offenders: Sentencing Departures And Judicial Control Over Conditions Of Confinement, E. Lea Johnston
UF Law Faculty Publications
At sentencing, a judge may foresee that an individual with a major mental disorder will experience serious psychological or physical harm in prison. In light of this reality and offenders’ other potential vulnerabilities, a number of jurisdictions currently allow judges to treat undue offender hardship as a mitigating factor at sentencing. In these jurisdictions, vulnerability to harm may militate toward an order of probation or a reduced term of confinement. Since these measures do not affect offenders’ day-to-day experience in confinement, these expressions of mitigation fail to protect adequately those vulnerable offenders who must serve time in prison. What Have You Done For Me Lately?: An Examination Of Youth Political Efficacy And Political Cynicism, Eric Anthony Williams
What Have You Done For Me Lately?: An Examination Of Youth Political Efficacy And Political Cynicism, Eric Anthony Williams
Student Theses and Dissertations
This paper utilizes a quantitative methodology to examine political attitudes among a sample of African American, Caucasian, and Hispanic youth, namely political efficacy and political cynicism. Utilizing data from the 2005 Black Youth Project study, this paper test hypotheses to explore whether key demographic, political, cultural, life experience, and self-efficacy variables effectively predict the aforementioned political attitudes. Key findings include African American and Hispanic youth are more politically efficacious than previous research suggests; however, they tend to be less trusting of the government.
The Seeds Of Mistrust: The Relationship Between Perceived Racism, Hiv Conspiracy Theories And Hiv Testing Attitudes, Joshua Brevard
The Seeds Of Mistrust: The Relationship Between Perceived Racism, Hiv Conspiracy Theories And Hiv Testing Attitudes, Joshua Brevard
Theses and Dissertations
Although the number of HIV infected peaked in the late 1980’s, HIV remains a major concern within the African American community (CDC, 2008). African Americans are disproportionately affected, comprising 14% of the U.S. population but representing 44% of new HIV infections in 2009 (CDC, 2011). It is vital to identify barriers to positive health behaviors like consistent condom use and HIV testing. This study focus on factors impacting attitudes towards HIV testing, including mistrust of the healthcare system, measured by support for HIV conspiracy theories (Thomas & Quinn, 1991). It also examined the prevalence of HIV conspiracy beliefs among African …

Research Brief: "Partnering With Communities To Address The Mental Health Needs Of Rural Veterans", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University
Institute for Veterans and Military Families
This research focuses on veterans in rural communities who have less access to mental health providers. The Yellow Ribbon Task Force program promoted and encouraged engagement in mental health care for veterans in rural communities, although future policies should enhance already existing clinical practices to increase standards for care. For further study, researchers should focus on evaluating initial program implementation and pilot testing in a variety of states and rural populations.

Relationships Between Risk Factors, Perceptions Of School Membership And Academic And Behavioral Engagement Of Students Who Attend An Alternative School For Behavioral And Emotional Challenges, Sunyoung Ahn, Richard Simpson
The Journal of Special Education Apprenticeship
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between the perceptions of school membership, risk factors, and behavioral and academic engagement among a sample of alternative school students. The study subjects were 48 7th-9th graders who were at high risk for school failure because of their serious and chronic behavioral and academic problems. All subjects had an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). A 25 item school membership questionnaire adapted from existing school membership surveys was used to assess students’ perceived school membership. The study participants reported a moderately positive school membership score. The findings indicated that commonly known risk …

The Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act: The Roadblocks To Recovery, Sivonnia L. Hunt
Seventh Circuit Review
This Article focuses on the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act's (FSIA) state-sponsored terrorism exception and roadblocks created by judicial rulings in this area. Through litigation, courts expanded the FSIA beyond Congress' intent to allow injured U.S. citizens to bring state law claims in federal court for damages resulting from a terrorist action supported by a foreign state. However, other courts took a restrictive approach, barring these claims. This shift led Congress to revise the FSIA to carry out its true intent.
There are three parts to this Article. Part I introduces the FSIA and its original exception for state-sponsored terrorism. It …

Avon Global Center for Women and Justice and Dorothea S. Clarke Program in Feminist Jurisprudence
In recent years, the number of women in prison has increased throughout the world, including in Argentina. In Argentina’s federal prisons, the population of female prisoners has expanded nearly 200% in the past two decades, a much higher rate than the increase in the number of incarcerated men. It is important to understand why these numbers have increased so significantly and to recognize the gender-specific needs and challenges of women prisoners.
This report offers a valuable contribution towards our understanding of the causes, conditions, and consequences of women’s imprisonment in Argentina. It is based on extensive research, including desk research, …
