A Mindful Environmental Jurisprudence?: Speculations On The Application Of Gandhi’S Thought To Mcwc V. Nestlé, Nehal A. Patel, Lauren Vella
A Mindful Environmental Jurisprudence?: Speculations On The Application Of Gandhi’S Thought To Mcwc V. Nestlé, Nehal A. Patel, Lauren Vella
Pace Environmental Law Review
We attempt to engage modern legal reasoning with Gandhi’s thought. We hope to speculate on what jurisprudence would look like if it were more mindful of the concepts central to Gandhi’s thought. By using Gandhi as an intellectual anchor, we hope to take a step toward creating a more “mindful jurisprudence” that implicitly incorporates into its reasoning the needs of environmental stewardship, disempowered populations, and the poverty-stricken. Because Gandhi’s thought has been discussed at length in environmental justice campaigns, we begin this effort by examining the relationship between environmental law and Gandhi’s thought. Given Gandhi’s commentaries on exploitative and oppressive …

Law Enforcement And The Mentally Ill: Thirty Years Of Police Literature, Jennifer Noe
Publications and Research
This study applies the methodology of content analysis to 30 years of law-enforcement literature to determine whether online access to scholarly research in social work and mental health made a difference in police policy toward the mentally ill. Keywords from the controlled vocabulary of these fields were found in the body of content analyzed prior to easily accessible online resources in 1997 , yet the number of articles on the subject grew from approximately one per year prior to 1998 to nearly five per year by 2011. The imprint of these two fields from outside of law enforcement was discernible …

School Psychologists Involvement With Response-To-Intervention And Students With Social, Emotional, And Behavioral Difficulties, Katelyn Hickman-Poloney
School Psychologists Involvement With Response-To-Intervention And Students With Social, Emotional, And Behavioral Difficulties, Katelyn Hickman-Poloney
Theses and Dissertations
The current school reform is being driven by shifts in thinking about school improvements, including a willingness to consider prevention versus remediation. Response-to-Intervention is a buzz word in education right now as it is the framework by which this shift in thinking is to be implemented. Preventatively addressing the mental health needs of students is a pressing issue for educational professionals as the population of students who exhibit social, emotional, and behavioral problems continues to be underserved. Since school psychologists are trained in Response-to-Intervention procedures, the purpose of this study was to determine if school psychologists are involved in Response-to-Intervention …

The Applicability Of Institutional Dynamics Framework For A Model For Enterprise Growth In Grenada And The Dominican Republic: A Preliminary Exploration, Reccia N. Charles, Nazly N. Nardi, Ruth Clarke
HCBE Faculty Presentations
Generally governments in developing economies work towards encouraging enterprise growth as the engine to increase national wealth and higher standards of living. In terms of the form of enterprise, some countries favor public or public-private partnerships, while others favor private enterprise primarily. The smaller the economy the more likely it is that the government will be involved in promoting the growth of enterprises. This paper examines the role of institutional dynamics in supporting or limiting enterprise growth in Grenada and the Dominican Republic. The interplay of the three parts of the institutional profile, regulatory, cognitive and normative, will be influenced in …

Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Research summarizes the construction of a Police Officer’s Tacit Knowledge Inventory (Inventory), a situational judgment test comprised of knowledge gained on-the-job by experienced police officers, and examines if it can play a role in the development of expertise. Correlation and regression analysis was done to establish the Inventory’s ability to predict post-Academy graduation performance. Results show that Inventory response patterns correlate with Supervisor ratings; and the Inventory responses correctly predict significant differences between novice patrol officers and experienced police officers.

This study uses longitudinal data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN) to examine the effects of exposure to school violence, community violence, child abuse, and parental intimate partner violence (IPV) on youths’ subsequent alcohol and marijuana use. We also examine the cumulative effects of being exposed to violence across these domains. Longitudinal data were obtained from 1,655 adolescents and their primary caregivers participating in the PHDCN. The effects of adolescents’ exposure to various forms of violence across different life domains were examined relative to adolescents’ frequency of alcohol and marijuana use three years later. Multivariate …

The study is a quantitative content analysis of news articles identified through the Google News search engine using 48 automated Google Alerts queries. Data are analyzed on 782 DUI arrest cases of officers employed by 511 nonfederal law enforcement agencies throughout the United …
Does Brazil Have The Right To Truth?, Glafira A. Marcon
Does Brazil Have The Right To Truth?, Glafira A. Marcon
The Macalester Review
Brazil established its first truth commission in November 2011, which seeks to uncover the human rights abuses committed during the military dictatorship from 1964 to 1985. Although no international treaty or convention explicitly recognizes the right to truth, regional precedent suggests that it is a human rights norm. The Truth Commission faces the following barriers: the Amnesty Law protects perpetrators of human rights violations on either side of the conflict, tensions exist between the Brazilian Supreme Court and the regional human rights court, and politically strong military officials still present in the Brazilian government actively block the Truth Commission’s access …

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
Research from many countries has documented the experiences of imprisoned women, who are always a minority within criminal justice and penal systems created and dominated by men. This increasingly substantial research literature has identified the challenges and difficulties faced by women prisoners, many of whom are separated from their children, and has documented the manifold difficulties experienced by women on release and afterwards (Fair, 2009; O’Brien, 2001). Some of these studies have documented not only women’s difficulties in the prison environment but also their strategies of coping and resistance, many researchers adopting qualitative methodologies which prioritise women prisoners’ own voices …
