Home Sweet Home: An Infinite Grid Of Memory And Repressed Abuse Trauma, Melissa Bush Jan 2013

Home Sweet Home: An Infinite Grid Of Memory And Repressed Abuse Trauma, Melissa Bush

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Incorporating traditional craft mediums of crochet and embroidery, I use digital technology to experiment with wording to graphically represent my abuse trauma. Due to the severity of the subject matter and the work ethic I employ in my art practice, using my hands and being completely involved is a form of masochistic pleasure. My process takes on a Sisyphean approach of penance for the sins of others in my work. During my studio practice, my process reaches a meditative state where my mind is clear and free of the burden. Once I've completed a panel of trauma, the burden is …

Verdi At 200: Recent Scholarship On The Composer And His Works, Linda B. Fairtile Jan 2013

Verdi At 200: Recent Scholarship On The Composer And His Works, Linda B. Fairtile

University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

The 100th anniversary of Verdi’s death, observed in 2001, inspired nearly a dozen academic conferences. At the dawn of his 2013 bicentennial, a celebratory year shared with Richard Wagner, hundreds of recent studies assess Verdi’s life, his works, and his impact. The present article surveys a selection of books and articles published between these two commemorations. A popular topic is Verdi’s role as a national icon, the calculated product of Italy’s search for a postunification identity. His engagement with foreign cultures has also received attention, for his German literary sources, his forays into French grand opera, and his use of …

Finding The Right Fit: Assessing The Impact Of Traditional V. Large Lecture/Small Lab Course Formats On A General Education Course, Susan M. Wildermuth, Tammy French, Edward Fredrick

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study explores alternative approaches for teaching general education courses burdened with serving extremely large enrollments. It compares the effectiveness of a self-contained course in which each course section is taught by one instructor to a large lecture/small lab format in which all course enrollees attend one large lecture section and then are divided into several small lab sections for more intensive training experiences. The study uses the Introduction to Human Communication course at the authors’ university. Two hundred and seventy-five students enrolled in nine large lecture/small lab sections of the course and two hundred and fifteen students enrolled in …

Autonomous Systems, Karolis Kosas Jan 2013

Autonomous Systems, Karolis Kosas

Theses and Dissertations

The ubiquity of digital media provides an unprecedented possibility to redefine the process and methods of design. Through experience from a series of creative projects, I investigate how certain aspects of the web allow for design to attain a degree of autonomy, thus producing results that go beyond anticipation and expertise of the author. Utilizing an unlimited capacity to store the content and retrieve immediate feedback, the designer’s role can be shifted to that of an initiator defining rules and boundaries, from which the process can evolve independently based on the input of users and data. The design output in …

Air Traffic has shown a steady increase since the institution of commercial aviation in the first quarter of the last century, and the use of the United States National Airspace System (NAS) is expected to increase by 45 percent more passengers by the year 2015 (Smith, 2004). The increasing demands of the NAS require preventive measures in order to preserve the safety of operations. NextGen is a transformative program expected to enhance the safety and effectiveness of NAS operations. One of the ways that it will achieve these goals is by improving air-ground communications.

In the current system, communications between …

Discrete Transforms With Good Time-Frequency And Spatial-Frequency Localization, David Chisholm Jan 2013

Discrete Transforms With Good Time-Frequency And Spatial-Frequency Localization, David Chisholm

Dissertations and Theses

Discrete orthonormal time-frequency basis functions are described and used for both analysis and synthesis of complex-valued signals. We derive expressions for complex-valued expansion coefficients in time-frequency lattices in the discrete one dimensional case. This derivation is based on Professor I. Gertner's previous construction of a complete orthonormal set of basis functions well localized in the temporal-spatial-frequency domain in the continuous case. We describe how these can be generalized to any number of dimensions. Example applications are presented in one and two dimensions. Three dimensional basis functions are visualized and discussed. Finally, a full a Matlab implementation of this work is …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Clint Eastwood's Speech At The 2012 Republican National Convention, Rene' Minder Jan 2013

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Clint Eastwood's Speech At The 2012 Republican National Convention, Rene' Minder

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This study focuses on the speech given by Clint Eastwood on August 30, 2012 at the 2012 Republican National Convention. Using the neo-Aristotelian method to conduct a rhetorical analysis, the persuasiveness of Eastwood’s speech was analyzed and discussed. The uniqueness of this deliberative speech was the use of a visual prop, an empty chair, to convince the audience of President Obama’s inadequacies as a leader. While the speech contained persuasive components, it was the visual communication of the empty chair that turned the Eastwood’s speech into a national discussion. This study had to then turn to research on visual communication …

The Tell-Tale Tatt: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of How Tattoos Impact Impression Formation During The Hiring Process, Sarah E. Bishoff

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

As tattoos have increased in popularity in recent years, the number of tattooed people applying for jobs in professional workplaces also has increased. This thesis explored how tattoos affect the impressions formed by potential employers during the hiring process. Symbolic Interactionism theory, based on the writings and concepts of George Mead, provides the basic theoretical framework for this study. The literature review examines several topics, including: how impressions are created; how conscious thought and unconscious thought impact impression formation; the importance of communication through visual messages; and how tattoos have evolved in recent society. Data for this study was gathered …

The Power Of Shame: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Social And Cultural Expectations Communicated In Media, Sarah Tovah Matz Jan 2013

The Power Of Shame: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Social And Cultural Expectations Communicated In Media, Sarah Tovah Matz

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Shame is an inescapable human feeling, and its impacts on human interaction are well documented. This thesis focuses on the power of symbolic shame in media and presents a critical discourse analysis (Machin & Mayr, 2012) of three recent public service announcements. As a theoretical basis, the study examines shame from point of view of ritual communication, framing theory, and the symbolic communication of stigma. Although shame is often regarded as an effective means to communicate social and cultural expectations and a tool for balancing behavior in society, shame may also be used to create structures of power and agendas …

A Framework For Medical Image Retrieval Using Merging-Based Classification With Dependency Probability-Based Relevance Feedback, Hossein Pourghassem, Sabalan Daneshvar Jan 2013

A Framework For Medical Image Retrieval Using Merging-Based Classification With Dependency Probability-Based Relevance Feedback, Hossein Pourghassem, Sabalan Daneshvar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) systems are used to retrieve relevant images from large-scale databases. In this paper, a framework for the image retrieval of a large-scale database of medical X-ray images is presented. This framework is designed based on query image classification into several prespecified homogeneous classes. Using a merging scheme and an iterative classification, the homogeneous classes are formed from overlapping classes in the database. For this purpose, the shape and texture features, selected using the forward selection algorithm, are optimized by a novel genetic algorithm-based feature reduction and optimization algorithm in the feature space. In this algorithm, using …

The Development Of The First Legend For Geomorphologic Mapping Of High Mountain Environments In The United Sates, Mitchell Lee Fyock Jan 2013

The Development Of The First Legend For Geomorphologic Mapping Of High Mountain Environments In The United Sates, Mitchell Lee Fyock

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Geomorphological mapping is the attempt to depict the physical setting of the surface of the earth by mapping the landforms present and the processes responsible for their appearance, and is method that is practiced worldwide. Currently, there is no universally accepted legend for mapping the geomorphological features of all environments, though there have been several attempts made to develop such a legend. Instead, many different European nations have developed their own geomorphologic mapping legends for mapping the landscapes that exist within their national boundaries. In addition, certain countries have even developed highly specific geomorphologic mapping legends for specific geomorphologic environments. …

Color/Shape/Form/Space, Brett James Hargesheimer Jan 2013

Color/Shape/Form/Space, Brett James Hargesheimer

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Color/Shape/Form/Space begins at its title. The show is named with the same directness that I want the work to have: accessible, ready for consumption. Stripped of unnecessary information, the exhibition’s title needed to match the work itself, which expresses minimalistic tendencies, avoiding the superfluous. Everything needed to be consciously put together to operate as a well-designed whole. Simple and clear. It is the age that we live in that prompts me to be so forthright. Our present is defined by attention deficit digital connectivity. Accessibility and information sharing are rampant. With the possibilities being seemingly endless, it is an exciting …

From Cover To Cover: Every Cover Has A Story, Feryal Cubukcu, Meryem Ayan

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Reading is a visual and mental communication between a reader and a text because the reader’s knowledge, experience and expectation help fill the gaps within an incomplete text. Namely, the reader’s visual and mental communication with the text requires supplemental information such as personal experience, perspective, interest and knowledge so that the incomplete narrative presenting instructions for the reader can be interpreted. In the communication between the reader and the text as Wolfgang Iser asserts “the reader plays a more creative role in the interpretation of the text because the text provides guidance and instructions but places limitations on its …

The Diffusion Of Digital Dashboards: An Examination Of Dashboard Utilization And The Managerial Decision Environment, Jeffrey Reinking

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three related studies examining the diffusion of digital dashboard technology throughout today’s organizations. Dashboards, once reserved for the executive level, are now available to managers at the lower levels of the organization. For these managers, dashboards have become an integral part of their work life to support their decision environment, to provide consistency in measures, to monitor performance, and to communicate information throughout the organization. Prior research in the practice literature has shown that dashboards improve managerial performance and organizational performance as well as communicate organizational goals and objectives; however, empirical research has not been conducted …

"So Closely Intertwined": Labor Interests And Racial Solidarity, Charlotte Garden, Nancy Leong Jan 2013

"So Closely Intertwined": Labor Interests And Racial Solidarity, Charlotte Garden, Nancy Leong

Faculty Articles

Conventional wisdom states that labor unions and people of color are adversaries. Commentators, academics, politicians, and employers across a broad range of ideologies view the two groups’ interests as fundamentally opposed and their relationship as rightfully fraught with tension. Like much conventional wisdom, the narrative that unions and people of color are rivals is flawed. In reality, labor unions and civil rights groups work together to advance a wide array of mutual interests; this work ranges from lobbying all levels of government to protesting working conditions across the country. Moreover, unions improve the lives of both members and non-members of …

In Situ Vision: The Student Experience Of Collaborative Learning In A Virtual Drawing Class, Annette Cohen Jan 2013

In Situ Vision: The Student Experience Of Collaborative Learning In A Virtual Drawing Class, Annette Cohen

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the construct of collaboration and the co-construction of knowledge in a distance learning drawing class. Distance learning drawing classes are rare, due to resistance by fine arts departments holding onto traditions that date back to Renaissance times. As a result, there is a paucity of literature on the subject. This multiple method study seeks an understanding of how students collaborate in critiques, form virtual communities and socially construct knowledge about learning how to draw. The study commences with the following three research questions: what social processes facilitate learning to draw from the …
