A Native Vision Of Justice, Carole Goldberg Apr 2013

A Native Vision Of Justice, Carole Goldberg

Michigan Law Review

Although largely unheralded in its time, D'Arcy McNickle's The Surrounded has become a classic of Native American literature. When the University of New Mexico Press reissued the book in 1978, a year after McNickle's death, the director of Chicago's Newberry Library, Lawrence W. Towner, predicted (correctly) that it would "reach a far wider audience." Within The Surrounded are early stirrings of a literary movement that took flight several decades after the novel's first publication in the writings of N. Scott Momaday, Louise Erdrich, James Welch, Leslie Marmon Silko, and Gerald Vizenor, among others. All of these Native American authors share …

Loving Your Neighbor: A Guide To Developing And Sustaining Community Service Projects, Rickey Houston Apr 2013

Loving Your Neighbor: A Guide To Developing And Sustaining Community Service Projects, Rickey Houston

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

A current ministry concern is mobilizing and engaging the congregation in service projects throughout the immediate and surrounding communities to spread the love of Christ and build the kingdom of God. The purpose of this project is to examine and shed light on an approach or approaches to effectively transform service beyond the walls of the congregation to intentional, appropriate, and relevant service within the community. This subject matter has the potential of transforming congregations from a predominant notion of interaction with self to interaction with organizations and individuals who are part of the church's mission field. In addition, there …

How School And University Supervising Staff Perceive The Pre-Service Teacher Education Practicum: A Comparative Study, Jeanne M. Allen, Angelina Ambrosetti, David Turner

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Abstract: This paper reports on research conducted in two Australian universities to evaluate factors that are perceived to significantly impact on the professional experiences of pre-service teachers during practicum. Contextualised within teacher education programs in an urban university in Tasmania and a regional university in Queensland, the particular focus of this paper is the beliefs and experiences of school and university supervising staff members regarding the efficacy of the practicum in enabling students to integrate into practice the knowledge and skills they have acquired in their university coursework. Findings generated from the comparative analysis of both mixed methods studies revealed …

Extension-Led Economic Development Model—A Recipe For Success, Nancy Bowen-Ellzey, Greg Davis, Eric Romich, Mike Lloyd Apr 2013

Extension-Led Economic Development Model—A Recipe For Success, Nancy Bowen-Ellzey, Greg Davis, Eric Romich, Mike Lloyd

Journal of Extension

Staffing, funding, and sustaining collaborative economic development organizations that provide the full range of programming require resources and cooperation. Extension-led economic development organizations, because they are tied to university resources grounded in research and education and without local jurisdictional bias, can build public trust and cooperative partnerships that help to broaden funding support for economic development programming.

Externships In Sustainability Program As An Outreach Tool For Extension, Mark Apel, Ayman Mostafa, Bill Brandau, Gregg Garfin Apr 2013

Externships In Sustainability Program As An Outreach Tool For Extension, Mark Apel, Ayman Mostafa, Bill Brandau, Gregg Garfin

Journal of Extension

In 2011, Arizona Cooperative Extension implemented Externships in Sustainability, a program in which undergraduate students conduct community-based sustainability projects. In contrast to internships, in which students shadow a professional, externship students apply their skills to community outreach. Extension faculty proposed projects and recruited undergraduates from within their communities to execute the projects. Students were given responsibility for planning, implementation, and Extension. Agents, students, and communities have benefited from improved relationships between the university and communities, and through rainwater harvesting, community gardens, and other projects to increase resilience. Extension programs in other states could adopt this model to reap similar benefits.

The Arab Spring And Western Societies: Fraternity And Collective Leadership, Paolo Giusta Mar 2013

The Arab Spring And Western Societies: Fraternity And Collective Leadership, Paolo Giusta

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

This article uses the principle of fraternity to read some recent evolutions of the concept of leadership both in research and in practice (for instance, the Arab revolutions) from individual, to shared, to collective leadership. In particular, it explores how some fraternal characteristics of collective leadership can provide an effective practice, underpinning both successful participation and transformation. The fraternity principle, indeed, can help collective leadership evolve from a “neighborly choice” to a full-fledged “civic duty”: a duty, however, which like leadership itself cannot be enforced or imposed from outside, but must result from an inside-out movement.

Building On And Honoring Forty Years Of Pbl Scholarship From Howard Barrows: A Scientometric, Large-Scale Data, And Visualization-Based Analysis, Hanjun Xian, Krishna Madhavan

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Over the past forty years, Howard Barrows’ contributions to PBL research have influenced and guided educational research and practice in a diversity of domains. It is necessary to make visible to all PBL scholars what has been accomplished, what is perceived as significant, and what is the scope of applicability for Barrows’ groundbreaking findings. As more disciplines recognize Barrows’ efforts and adopt PBL in education, it becomes crucial but challenging to sustain community memory so that PBL scholars are kept well informed of research innovations in various domains. In this paper, we review Barrows’ scholarly efforts in PBL and reveal …

The Role Of Nonprofits As Administrators In Municipal Sustainability Planning: An Exploration Of Four Cities, Morgan Benson Mar 2013

The Role Of Nonprofits As Administrators In Municipal Sustainability Planning: An Exploration Of Four Cities, Morgan Benson

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Municipal governments across the United States have been integrating sustainability into their planning and economic development strategies for more than a decade. Despite this, forging a consensus on exactly what a “sustainable city” is—or how communities can pursue sustainability in financially and politically viable ways—has proven difficult. Over the past several years, however, many governments have strengthened their initiatives by harnessing the capacity of nonprofit organizations to serve as administrators of their sustainability plans. The roles of nonprofits vary between cities but often include information gathering and designing and developing plans, while the task of implementing these plans is managed …

Uncertainty And The Reform Of Elementary Math Education, Wayne Melville, Ann Kajander, Donald Kerr, Jennifer Holm Mar 2013

Uncertainty And The Reform Of Elementary Math Education, Wayne Melville, Ann Kajander, Donald Kerr, Jennifer Holm

Education Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the notion of uncertainty as elementary teachers engage in conversations intended to develop their understanding and implementation of reform-based mathematics teaching. Using a narrative methodology, several sources of teacher uncertainty are investigated: teaching and learning, the subject, and improving one’s own teaching. The data analysis indicates two important findings. The first is the importance of substantive and syntactic subject knowledge as a necessary foundation for teachers to understand uncertainty in terms that renew their classroom practice. The second is the need to develop and sustain communities in which teachers value opportunities to critique their classroom practices.

The Impact Of Hiawatha Light Rail On Commercial And Industrial Property Values In Minneapolis, Kate Ko, Xinyu (Jason) Cao Mar 2013

The Impact Of Hiawatha Light Rail On Commercial And Industrial Property Values In Minneapolis, Kate Ko, Xinyu (Jason) Cao

Journal of Public Transportation

The impact of proximity to transit on property values has become a key question in the debate on the relationships between public infrastructure investment and economic development. The focus has been on value captured by residential properties, with far fewer studies examining non-residential properties. Furthermore, few studies differentiate the effect of rail access and the effect of access to major interactions that later become station sites, and even fewer addressed the gradient of the accessibility effect. Based on the economic theory of firm location choice, this study develops hedonic pricing models to assess the value-added of the Hiawatha LRT on …

The Role Of Universities In Post-Disaster Community-Based Recovery Planning After Great East Japan Earthquake, Tamiyo Kondo

DRU Workshop 2013 Presentations – Disaster Resistant University Workshop: Linking Mitigation and Resilience

On March 11, 2011, the magnitude 9 earthquake that struck off the coast of north east Japan was followed by a massive tsunami that killed almost 20,000 people and displaced more than 350,000 residents. The decreased function and capability of local government made strong demand in society for the role of planning universities to get involved in post-disaster recovery planning in Tohoku region. It is said that there are more than 300 communities in which need to work on post-disaster recovery planning. Universities’ faculty and students play significant roles today to pursue resilient and sustainable communities between partnerships with local …

An Analytical Study Of Some Ngos’/Npos’ Contributions By Promoting Library Activities At Disadvantageous Areas In Vietnam To Create Potential And Lifelong Learners., Zakir Hossain

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The two key concepts of this paper are the significance of Library and NGO/NPO. The missions of both libraries and NGOs/NPOs increasingly intersect each other. These organizations collaborate to provide essential services that revolve around the creation, dissemination, and storage of information. Besides hundreds of national NGOs/NPOs, 177 (Wikipedia) international non-governmental and non-profit organizations are working for a humanitarian cause, development of education, improvement of the intellectual standard of the people and children in the disadvantageous areas in Vietnam. They attempt to get out of poverty, diseases and illiteracy marking the contribution to the establishment of a united Vietnam with …

Rural Natives’ Perceptions Of Strengths And Challenges In Their Communities, Jessica D. Ulrich-Schad Feb 2013

Rural Natives’ Perceptions Of Strengths And Challenges In Their Communities, Jessica D. Ulrich-Schad

Carsey Publications

This brief uses two sources of data to explore how Native Americans view the current socioeconomic and environmental state of their communities and their future within them—the Community and Environment in Rural America (CERA) surveys and focus groups with Native leaders in one rural state. The data help to illustrate how the Native experience is both similar to, and unique from, that of other rural Americans. While the findings reported by author Jessica Ulrich-Schad illustrate that there are significant challenges facing Native people, they also show that strengths and opportunities continue to exist in Indian Country and that Natives remain …

Environmental And Social Sustainability Impacts Of Teaching And Research: Some Ideas, Rowena H. Scott Feb 2013

Environmental And Social Sustainability Impacts Of Teaching And Research: Some Ideas, Rowena H. Scott

eCULTURE

"One aim of Australia’s 2009 National Action Plan for Education for Sustainability is to equip all Australians with the awareness, knowledge, skills, values and motivation to live sustainably in order that future generations can meet their needs. Despite the efforts of ECU Green Office Program, their brief is not to address curriculum issues so consequently this paper aims to be a starting point for discussions that examine how we at Edith Cowan University teach and conduct research that considers their environmental, social, cultural and economic implications. This paper focuses on two main issues: how ECU units teach in environmentally sustainable …

Transformative Education For Sustainability Transition At Edith Cowan University: A Discussion Paper, Sandra Woolltorton Feb 2013

Transformative Education For Sustainability Transition At Edith Cowan University: A Discussion Paper, Sandra Woolltorton

eCULTURE

"Recently the Australian Government released a National Action Plan for sustainability education (DEWHA, 2009) that prescribes for universities a reorientation to sustainability through teaching and learning, research and campus management. It specifies a transformative approach to education, together with a whole‐of‐school, whole‐of‐system philosophy. In this paper I define ‘transformative education’ in the context of sustainability and discuss the implications of the National Action Plan for Edith Cowan University. I also conduct a reconnaissance of the sustainability websites of a small sample of international universities to consider the depth of their transformative approaches to teaching and learning. Finally, I ‘throw down …
