A Quantitative Analysis Of Collegiate Athletic Involvement And Academic Achievement Among Sport Management Students, Christopher Amos Jun 2013

A Quantitative Analysis Of Collegiate Athletic Involvement And Academic Achievement Among Sport Management Students, Christopher Amos

Masters Theses

Within the last several decades, more attention has been focused on the academic success of college athletes. It has been documented from several studies that high school athletes perform better academically than their non-athlete peers (American Sports Institute, 1995; Brand, 2007; Dilley-Knoles, Burnett, & Peak, 2010; Foltz, 1992; Fox, Barr-Anderson, Neumark-Sztainer, & Wall, 2010; Slear, 2005). However, at the collegiate level, this heightened academic achievement trend among student-athletes is not so clear. Lapchick often releases data regarding graduation rates among a select group of highly achieving teams in certain sports but not much exists in the way of a comparison …

Passion Transfer In Sports Advertising: Sports Passion And Attitude Toward Advertising, Brandon Brown, Larry Degaris Jun 2013

Passion Transfer In Sports Advertising: Sports Passion And Attitude Toward Advertising, Brandon Brown, Larry Degaris

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

In order to retain advertising clients, media companies are in search of viable strategies that can justify the high costs of advertising fees within the sports setting. In acknowledging the significance of advertising during sport programs, the current study seeks to investigate the value of sports advertising by introducing the concept of ‘passion transfer’ (i.e., the transference of high likability levels of sport programs to the sport programs’ advertisements). We examine this concept by analyzing the relationship between viewer passion towards programming and advertising effectiveness. In doing so, the study also lends support to the notion of incorporating emotional measures …

Bocce Ball Launcher: An Adaptive Bocce Ball Device, Jake Deschamps, Megan Hughes, Thomas Lynch

Mechanical Engineering

This report details the adaptive bocce launching device created by Team B.A.L.L. and theprocess of designing, building and testing it. The final design was a wirelessly controlled pneumatic catapult capable of propelling a bocce ball such that it would land fifteen feet away and roll the length of the wheelchair accessible bocce courts located at the Colony Park Community Center in Atascadero. A wide variety of users are supported because the system is controlled by a single button which can be actuated by the user’s hand, forearm, head or anything else they are able to move. The catapult allows the …

The Novelty And Nostalgia Effects Of A New Major League Baseball Stadium As Measured By Its Impact On Attendance, The Corresponding Costs Of Attending, And Ticket Revenue, Sam Fullerton, Carol Bruneau Jun 2013

The Novelty And Nostalgia Effects Of A New Major League Baseball Stadium As Measured By Its Impact On Attendance, The Corresponding Costs Of Attending, And Ticket Revenue, Sam Fullerton, Carol Bruneau

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

Using secondary data, the novelty effect of the opening of 15 new Major League Baseball stadiums was determined. Using a seven-year period looking both before and after each stadium’s inaugural season, a meaningful novelty effect was documented. There were significant increases in attendance and the average ticket price for each of the 15 teams under scrutiny. As a consequence, there was a significant increase in the revenue generated through ticket sales. While the anticipated spike was in evidence for the year a new stadium opened, meaningful increases were also documented for the years subsequent to the opening of the new …

The Marketing And Economic Implications Of Select Bankruptcies In North American Professional Sports Since The Start Of The Global Economic Crisis, Eric C. Schwarz, Patrick Ryan Murphy, Barbara Caldwell

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

The purpose of this paper is to look at the effects of the global economic crisis on the North American professional sports industry, and more specifically some of the examples of how the significant change in the global economic landscape has had a direct effect on the sport business industry. The most interesting of these effects is the increase in the number of bankruptcies that have occurred over the past five years. Four Easy Pieces To Balance Privacy And Accountability In Public Higher Education: A Response To Wrongdoing Ranging From Petty Corruption To The Sandusky And Penn State Tragedy, Robert Steinbuch May 2013

Four Easy Pieces To Balance Privacy And Accountability In Public Higher Education: A Response To Wrongdoing Ranging From Petty Corruption To The Sandusky And Penn State Tragedy, Robert Steinbuch

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

This Article offers four legislative solutions—four easy pieces—to properly balance confidentiality and accountability in publicly financed higher education. It presents (1) a fix to the Federal Student Privacy Act that will prevent it from being misapplied as a defense to proper freedom of information act requests, (2) a bill to require the affirmative disclosure of admission practices at public schools receiving federal funding, (3) a bill that imposes direct costs, through the bankruptcy code, on schools that misrepresent their data regarding graduation and post-graduation opportunities, and (4) a revision of the federal freedom of information act to have it apply …

Challenges Of Graduate School, Alexander D. Heath

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

For this project I produced and hosted a 30-mintue in-depth interview/talk show program where I interviewed three students about the process of going through graduate school at Western Kentucky University. Two of my guests are currently going through graduate school at WKU while the third recently received his graduate degree. I discussed with each guest their respective fields and area of research. We talked not only about why they chose their field but how their work and their field affect society on a daily basis. We touched on the that impact at the local and national level. My goal for …
