What's Love Got To Do With It? The Role Of Brand Love In Brand Community Experience, Phillip M. Hartley
What's Love Got To Do With It? The Role Of Brand Love In Brand Community Experience, Phillip M. Hartley
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The work presented here explores and conceptually documents the consumer’s experience of brand communities—groups of people brought together by their mutual appreciation of a commercial brand. The relationships between individuals’ motives for joining, their participation, and the social and brand-related outcomes associated with such groups are tested. In addition, the role of Brand Love in the individual’s experience is assessed. The results of the research indicate that Participation may reduce the influence of a person’s original reasons for joining the community on the ultimate outcomes of membership. Further, a person’s degree of love for the underlying brand influences the likelihood …
Factors Affecting Teaching Efficacy Of Beginning Secondary Agricultural Education Teachers, Marshall Swafford
Factors Affecting Teaching Efficacy Of Beginning Secondary Agricultural Education Teachers, Marshall Swafford
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Teacher efficacy studies in agricultural education have primarily focused on documenting the perceived teaching efficacy of agriculture teachers. A limited number of studies have focused upon the factors that may help shape those efficacy beliefs. Therefore, the primary purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that may contribute to the teaching efficacy beliefs of beginning agriculture education teachers. These factors included perceived collective efficacy, perceived principal support, and perceived teacher preparation program quality. The population for this study included all agriculture teachers in Missouri and Kansas (N=213) who had not completed more than five years teaching agricultural education …

Interrelationships Of Caregiving Characteristics, Burden Of Caregiving, Depressive Symptomology, Physical Health, Self-Care, Life Satisfaction And Social Support Of Social Workers, Katherine Riker Sternberg
LSU Master's Theses
With increasing numbers of Americans engaged in unpaid, informal caregiving for adults over the age of 18, there is a need for research that investigates caregivers’ experiences, with particular emphasis on their health and well being. This is the first known study to examine the experiences of social workers, engaged in direct practice, who are also managing responsibilities related to informal caregiving. The study examined interrelationships among social workers’ caregiving characteristics, burden of caregiving, depressive symptomology, physical health, self-care, life satisfaction and social support. Hypotheses included: (1) Burden of caregiving is positively correlated with depressive symptomology. (2) The burden of …
Peel-Off Lawyers: Legal Professionals In India's Corporate Law Firm Sector, Jayanth K. Krishnan
Peel-Off Lawyers: Legal Professionals In India's Corporate Law Firm Sector, Jayanth K. Krishnan
Articles by Maurer Faculty
This study is about hierarchy within the legal profession – how it presents itself, how it is retained, and how it is combated. The socio-legal literature on this subject is rich, with many roots tracing back to Professor Marc Galanter’s famous early 1970s article on the ‘Haves’ and ‘Have-Nots.’ Galanter’s piece and the work of those influenced by him rightly suggest that resources – institutional, financial, and demographic – contribute to whether lawyers are, and remain as, part of the ‘Haves.’ Yet, while resources of course greatly matter, as this study will argue other forces are significant as well. One …
Validation Of The Remote Food Photography Method To Quantify Intake Of Infant Formula, Abby Duhe
Validation Of The Remote Food Photography Method To Quantify Intake Of Infant Formula, Abby Duhe
LSU Master's Theses
Childhood obesity rates have more than tripled since the 1970s, and this increased prevalence is cause for concern as childhood obesity increases the risk of adult obesity and other comorbid diseases. Evidence suggests that the origins of obesity can be identified in infanthood. Accurate methods of assessing food intake in infants can be utilized to establish effective feeding practices in infanthood and to assess the relationship between infant feeding practices and the risk of childhood obesity. Current methods are either subjective or have limited ability for widespread use beyond clinical research settings due to cost and high burden. The aim …

Rube Tube : Cbs, Rural Sitcoms, And The Image Of The South, 1957-1971, Sara K. Eskridge
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines the factors that led to the creation of the CBS rural comedy boom in the 1960s, as well as the reasons for its demise. For years, historians have dismissed the rural comedy craze as the networks catering to the growing number of southern viewers in the late 1950s. However, there were not enough to southern viewers to dictate a network’s entire programming schedule for the better part of a decade. Also, rural comedy was the domain of a single network, CBS. Had it really been a major thematic trend, all networks would have at least attempted to …
Government Spending And Child Well-Being : A Correlational Study Of The Organization For Economic Co-Operation And Development (Oecd) Countries, Rachel Suzanna Foretich
Government Spending And Child Well-Being : A Correlational Study Of The Organization For Economic Co-Operation And Development (Oecd) Countries, Rachel Suzanna Foretich
LSU Master's Theses
Children who live in poverty are more likely to suffer from avoidable illnesses, become teenaged parents, be involved in the criminal justice system, and mature into adults who live in poverty (Isaacs et al., 2011). This study examines the relationship between government spending as a percent of gross domestic product (GDP) and 21 child well-being indicators. The samples in this study were collected from 30 Organization of Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) countries for the years 2009 and 2012. The major finding of this study reveals that there is a statistically significant relationship between government spending as a percent of …

Female Collegiate Volleyball Athletes' Perceptions Of Identity, Specific To Sport And Gender, As Understood By Their In-Sport And Everyday Dress And Appearance Practices, Jessica Ann Pattison
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how female collegiate volleyball athletes use dress and appearance practices to create, maintain, and negotiate their sport identity and gender identity, in-sport and everyday, from the time they played collegiate volleyball to present day. The study was guided by grounded theory and phenomenology. Semi-structured, in-depth, active qualitative interviews with 12 women, who represented American, Brazilian, Canadian, and Romanian viewpoints, were analyzed using open coding and thematic analysis procedures. Analysis revealed three key themes related to female collegiate volleyball athletes’ use of dress and appearance practices as a means to shape and …
Rethinking U.S. Legal Education: No More "Same Old, Same Old", Nancy B. Rapoport
Rethinking U.S. Legal Education: No More "Same Old, Same Old", Nancy B. Rapoport
Scholarly Works
In this Essay, I suggest that we should think about how to create a curriculum that encourages students to develop a variety of skill sets. Law students simply don’t need three years of Socratic questioning regarding the fine details of court opinions. They need a wide range of experiences, preferably building on skill sets (like the twenty-six Berkeley factors) that effective lawyers have developed. A law school’s curriculum should have courses that focus on different factors in each year of law school. Ultimately, what we should be teaching law students is how to develop the judgment to advise clients. Teaching …
The Languages Of Pyidawtha And The Burmese Approach To Naitonal Development, Tharaphi Than
The Languages Of Pyidawtha And The Burmese Approach To Naitonal Development, Tharaphi Than
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
Burma’s first well known welfare plan was entitled Pyidawtha or Happy Land, and it was launched in 1952. In vernacular terms, the literal meaning of Pyidawtha is ‘Prosperous Royal Country’. The government’s attempt to sustain tradition and culture and to instil modern aspirations in its citizens was reflected in its choice of the word Pyidawtha. The Plan failed and its implications still overshadow the development framework of Burma. This paper discusses how the country’s major decisions, including whether or not to join the Commonwealth, have been influenced by language; how the term and concept of ‘development’ were conceived; how the …
Alexis De Tocqueville’S Political Science Of Revolutions; Theory And Application, Michal Maciej Kuz
Alexis De Tocqueville’S Political Science Of Revolutions; Theory And Application, Michal Maciej Kuz
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines the theory of revolutions presented in the main writing of Alexis de Tocqueville and its importance in the field of political theory as well as its possible application in the field of comparative politics. Scholars specializing in the study of the writings of Alexis de Tocqueville have for many years debated on whether the works of this author offer a comprehensive political theory of regimes and political change. This work supports the idea that in all his major writings de Tocqueville works within the same theoretical framework and develops his own typology of modern regimes. At the …
All-Women's Flat Track Roller Derby : Gender, Psychoanalysis, And Meaning, Matthew Newsom
All-Women's Flat Track Roller Derby : Gender, Psychoanalysis, And Meaning, Matthew Newsom
LSU Master's Theses
For over a decade, women’s flat track roller derby has grown to reach thousands of women in various countries around the world. Through roller derby, these women are engaging in a full-contact sport that has no comparable male counterpart, making this rapidly-growing sport an interesting arena for gender and cultural research. This thesis uses ethnographic information collected from two U.S. derby teams in order to demonstrate the dynamic interplay of culture and psychology in the making of cultural and personal meaning. In so doing, this research validates the role that psychology—and specifically, psychoanalysis—can play in cultural anthropology, and demonstrates a …

Sport Team Fandom, Arousal, And Communication : A Multimethod Comparison Of Sport Team Identification With Psychological, Cognitive, Behavioral, Affective, And Physiological Measures, Shaughan Alan Keaton
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The study of sport fandom is undertaken in a variety of disciplines, including but not limited to communication, psychology, sociology, economics, marketing and business. These investigations are significant because of the ubiquitous presence of sport fandom in world culture and its interdisciplinary adaptability in academia. To date however, there has not been a consistent conceptual or operational definition of sport fandom and related factors such as spectatorship, involvement and identification. Consequently, this lack of cohesiveness has serious ramifications, including lack of comparability in results and an inability to generate consistent evidence of the validity and reliability of the various self-report …
Toward A Redefinition Of Musical Learning In The Saxophone Studios Of Argentina, Mauricio Gabriel Aguero
Toward A Redefinition Of Musical Learning In The Saxophone Studios Of Argentina, Mauricio Gabriel Aguero
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The academic teaching of saxophone in Argentina is a recent activity compared with the teaching of others instruments. The curricula have been modeled in European schools, covering exclusively classical music and, therefore, setting aside the particularities Argentine society express through its own music. Composers have written several works for saxophone including local elements, such as folkloric rhythms and tango language; but the students in the academy are not able to learn them in a methodical manner. The aim of this research is to bring to the surface the gap between what is taught in the saxophone classrooms and what the …

Polygamy Is Creepy, Wrong, And Sick! (However, I Find It Fascinating) : Parasocial Comparison, Parasocial Processing, Parasocial Contact Hypothesis, And Polygamy, Thomas Phillip Madison
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examined tolerance of polygamists as a result of exposure to television programming. Specifically, it looked at how audiences form attitudes toward the practice of polygamy and its participants in light of viewing its portrayals in popular television entertainment. Using historical research, semi-structured interviews, surveys of viewers and students, and an experiment, I explored the issue of tolerance among different types of Americans. The findings in these studies demonstrate that Americans never cared for polygamy and continue to find little appeal for its practice. Yet, we are captivated by television shows that focus on polygamy. Part of our habit …

Extending To Fashion Category: An Exploratory Study On An Auto Brand Extension, Langchao Zhang
Extending To Fashion Category: An Exploratory Study On An Auto Brand Extension, Langchao Zhang
LSU Master's Theses
Brand extension has been one of the most commonly used marketing strategies. Many industries use existing well-known brand names to launch new lines or categories to reduce the cost for creating awareness. Auto companies have been increasingly looking for opportunities of broadening their brand halo to gain more profit, while the billion-dollar global fashion industries have been seeking the chance of brand extensions from established durable brands. Previous research has examined the factors affecting consumers’ attitude toward brand extension, however, the majority of brand extensions are reportedly not successful. There are no known studies investigating the case of extending into …
A Calvinist View Of Visual Art In Seventeenth-Century Holland : The Iconography Of Esther In Post-Reformation Dutch Painting, Sarah Grafton Peaster
A Calvinist View Of Visual Art In Seventeenth-Century Holland : The Iconography Of Esther In Post-Reformation Dutch Painting, Sarah Grafton Peaster
LSU Master's Theses
The Book of Esther, found in the Old Testament, has been represented in a variety of ways throughout history. In a sweeping tale of love, honor, and sacrifice, the Jewish maiden queen, Esther, is a heroine to the oppressed. Dutch Protestants in the Golden Age felt a kinship to this subject, particularly after the Protestant Reformation and the new religious freedom gained in Holland during the sixteenth century, which continued in the seventeenth century. These men and women saw many parallels between Esther’s experience and their own, both as the covenant people of God and as the remnant preserved by …

Organization Benefits - The Panacea For All That Ails You? A Dyadic, Dual-Earner Investigation Of Organization-Offered Benefits And Their Effect On Individuals And Their Partners, Suzanne Marie Booth-Ledoux
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In an effort to attract and retain top talent, organizations often offer and implement various organization benefits. The focus of this dissertation is on the outcomes of those offered organization benefits on employees and their partners. Three types of organization benefits were assessed: family-friendly benefits, financial and compensation benefits, and health care and wellness benefits. Additionally, the connection between the offering of these benefits with family-supportive organization perceptions was also examined. Family-supportive organization perceptions was shown to directly and indirectly link to individual-level outcomes including work-to-family conflict and psychological wellbeing. Moreover, because individuals do not exist in a vacuum (i.e., …

Burn, Boil & Eat : An Intersection Analysis Of Stereotypes In The Most Influential Films Of All Time, Roslyn M. Satchel
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This research builds upon the work of Entman & Rojecki (2001) in examining the ways the most influential movies use racial stereotypes in media frames. The results of this study contribute to the rather limited mass media research and body of knowledge regarding the media content that attracts the largest and most enduring audiences in the new media landscape. As ten of the films that have generated the most revenue, the movies in this sample constitute a genre of movies that are also a prime feature of on-going publishing, cable, internet, digital gaming, DVD, and movie sequel franchises. If, as …
An Ecological Analysis Of Us County-Level Suicide Rates : An Application Of Spatial Patterning Models, Chantel Dufrene Chauvin
An Ecological Analysis Of Us County-Level Suicide Rates : An Application Of Spatial Patterning Models, Chantel Dufrene Chauvin
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Suicide has been studied sociologically since the late 19th century when theorists like Durkheim ([1897] 1951) found that the spatial patterning of suicides was not random. Looking beyond psychological troubles, suicide studies began to address the social factors that affected suicide rates. Building on the work of early scholars, contemporary studies mainly focus on variations in levels of social integration variables within communities to explain the nature of suicide rates. Many of these contemporary studies, however, only consider one type of social integration, like religion, and how variations in participation affect the suicide rate. To date, no study simultaneously considers …
Psychological Behavior Analysis Using Advanced Signal Processing Techniques For Fmri Data, Charisma Dionne Edwards
Psychological Behavior Analysis Using Advanced Signal Processing Techniques For Fmri Data, Charisma Dionne Edwards
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Psychological analysis related to voluntary reciprocal trust games were obtained using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) hyperscanning for 44 pairs of strangers throughout 36 trust games (TG) and 16 control games (CG). Hidden Markov models (HMMs) are proposed to train and classify the fMRI data acquired from these brain regions and extract the essential features of the initial decision of the first player to trust or not trust the second player. These results are evaluated using the different versions of the multifold cross-validation technique and compared to other speech data and other advanced signal processing techniques including linear classification, support …
Constructing Geographic Areas For Homicide Research : A Case Study Of New Orleans, Lawrence Keenan Robert
Constructing Geographic Areas For Homicide Research : A Case Study Of New Orleans, Lawrence Keenan Robert
LSU Master's Theses
Because homicides are rare events, criminologists must often deal with the Small Population Problem, which creates unreliable homicide rates based on arbitrarily delineated census tracts of low population. These rates lead to violations in several assumptions required in statistical analysis. This study proposes the Regionally Constrained Agglomerative Clustering and Partitioning (REDCAP) method to mitigate the Modifiable Areal Unit Problem and solve the Small Population Problem by constructing new, larger regions with sufficient minimum populations for homicide rate calculation. This method is used for a case study of New Orleans, Louisiana, to test the relationship between concentrated disadvantage and homicide. Ordinary …
Lifestyle Factors And Risk Of Heart Failure: A Prospective Cohort Study, Yujie Wang
Lifestyle Factors And Risk Of Heart Failure: A Prospective Cohort Study, Yujie Wang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Heart failure (HF) has become a major health problem with its high prevalence, poor clinical outcomes, and large health-care costs. Compared with medical intervention, the prevention of HF through lifestyle approaches is free of side effect. Therefore, the prevention of HF through lifestyle approaches is of special interest. In this project, we aim to investigate 1) the association of different levels of occupational, commuting and leisure-time physical activity with HF risk; 2) the association of coffee consumption with HF risk; 3) the role of lifestyle factors in explaining the risk of HF; and 4) the association between antihypertensive drug treatment …
Lowbrow Art : The Unlikely Defender Of Art History's Tradition, Joseph R. Givens
Lowbrow Art : The Unlikely Defender Of Art History's Tradition, Joseph R. Givens
LSU Master's Theses
This thesis has as twofold purpose. First, it will show that Lowbrow Art fits into the framework of art history and is worthy of art history’s attention. Second, it will argue for a revalidation of “traditional” art historical methods by proving that the methods are applicable to a marginalized contemporary art movement. Lowbrow Art is one of the most distinctive and vibrant art movements in the world, but there has yet to be a thorough examination of this style. Despite the undeniable worldwide success of the Lowbrow Art movement, it remains relatively obscure in academic discourse. Perhaps one reason why …

Reading And Re-Reading Young Adult Memoirs : A Narrative Study With Pre-Service And In-Service Teachers, Heather L. Johnston-Durham
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, I describe a narrative study in which five pre-service and in-service teachers read and re-read three young adult memoirs and discussed their responses in a series of book group meetings. The purpose was to examine how teachers discuss young adult memoirs, what they might learn about themselves in the process of reading and reflecting in book discussions and in a Commonplace Book they kept, and how they might use young adult memoirs in classrooms including, but not limited to English language arts (ELA) classrooms. Data was collected through transcribing a series of book group meetings, as well …
Volatile Congregations : Crisis Sensemaking In A Southern Baptist Church, Brandon Douglas Bannon
Volatile Congregations : Crisis Sensemaking In A Southern Baptist Church, Brandon Douglas Bannon
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to test the assertion that Sensemaking Theory is an appropriate lens to understand church crisis by highlighting the role of communication as a central aspect of the sensemaking process. In addition, through the application of Sensemaking Theory, the secondary goal was to assist congregations as they try to avoid the negative consequences of church splits. The analysis utilized in the current study was specifically selected to develop a history of participant interpretation within a church in order to determine how members made sense of the crisis. To that end, this study followed the …
The Role Of Trust In Neighborhood Recovery: Examinations From New Orleans’ Recovery From Hurricane Katrina, David Traweek Maddox
The Role Of Trust In Neighborhood Recovery: Examinations From New Orleans’ Recovery From Hurricane Katrina, David Traweek Maddox
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation describes and helps delineate the circumstances under which different kinds of trust influenced neighborhood recovery in the Greater New Orleans area after Hurricane Katrina. These analyses provide insights into the effects of neighborhood levels of social capital, organizational capacity, particularized racial trust and generalized trust on the mean level of household recovery in Orleans and St. Bernard Parish neighborhoods. Results suggest that neighborhood organizational capacity and several measures of neighborhood social capital had direct and positive effects on neighborhood recovery and that the effects of generalized trust on neighborhood recovery are not fixed and that neighborhood organizational capacity …

Economics And The Bible, Roger S. Nam
Economics And The Bible, Roger S. Nam
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
At its essence, economics is the study of how societies make decisions on the allocation of limited resources. Whether subsistence, capitalist, socialist, or totalitarian, each society faces complex choices regarding the distribution of goods and utilities. In making such choices, economics involves the study of the various allocation processes such as production, consumption, exchange, forecasting, scarcity, and risk. But in all of these activities, economics is observable only through human behavior. Consequently, efforts to isolate economic behavior from social spheres are heuristic at best, misleading at worst. Economic decisions reflect deeper ideological values, hierarchies, and positions of power, often revealed …
