The Independent Influences Of Relational And Physical Victimization On Subsequent Physical Aggression In Middle School Children, Michelle D. Mioduszewski Jan 2013

The Independent Influences Of Relational And Physical Victimization On Subsequent Physical Aggression In Middle School Children, Michelle D. Mioduszewski

Master's Theses

Using Agnew's strain (1992) and integrative (2005) theory, this study hypothesized that relational and physical victimization would be independently associated with self-reported physical aggression at six months and one year after victimization. Secondary data analysis was conducted using three waves of a longitudinal multisite dataset used for the "Outcome Evaluation of the Teens, Crime, and the Community/Community Works (TCC/CW) Training Program, 2004-2005." Independent variables at wave one were relational victimization occurring none or one time (56.2%), or two or more times (43.8%), and physical victimization occurring none or one time (77.8%), or two or more times (22.2%). The dependent variables …

Giving And Taking Orders: Race, Rank, And The United States Military, Natalie Levy Seefeldt Jan 2013

Giving And Taking Orders: Race, Rank, And The United States Military, Natalie Levy Seefeldt

Master's Theses

This thesis explores racial representation in the United States military throughout each rank level, within all active and reserve branches, to determine whether racial representation is related to rank. Using a census of the U.S. military from the Department of Defense, I establish a summary of what representation looks like overall, and more specifically, what it looks like within enlisted, warrant officer, and officer ranks. The citizen-soldier theory contends that failure on the part of the U.S. military to maintain representative forces threatens the legitimacy and credibility of democracy and could even become a threat to it (Armor and Gilroy, …

The Effects Of Candidate Religiosity And Candidate Secularism On Voters' Support For The Political Candidate, Nathanael Gratias Sumaktoyo Jan 2013

The Effects Of Candidate Religiosity And Candidate Secularism On Voters' Support For The Political Candidate, Nathanael Gratias Sumaktoyo

Master's Theses

This study examines the effects of candidate religiosity, candidate secularism, and voter fundamentalism on voters' support for a political candidate. Seven effects were tested: 1) the religiosity effect, which suggests that a religious candidate will be supported more than a nonreligious candidate; 2) the secularism effect, which suggests that a secular candidate will be supported more than a nonsecular candidate; 3) the JFK effect, which suggests that a secular religious candidate will be supported more than a nonsecular religious candidate; 4) the deviant effect--an opposite of the JFK effect--, which suggests that a secular religious candidate constitutes a group deviant, …

Sustainable Diverse Communities: A Comparison Of Hammond, Indiana And Chicago's Uptown Neighborhood, Teresa Neumann

Master's Theses

According to US Census data Hammond, IN - a midsized American City - and Chicago's Uptown neighborhood both have census tracts that have been racially, ethnically and economically diverse over the past 20-30 years. Utilizing the engaged methodology of community-based research this project uses the voice of community leaders from both Hammond and Uptown to inform and illustrate what is happening behind the Census data. This includes the role of civic institutions, local government and local business. Through long form structured interviews individuals offered their perspectives, concerns and ideas about how this diversity came about and what challenges and opportunities …

Exploring The Relevance Of Feminist Leadership In Theological Education Of Nigeria, Adesanya İbiyinka Olusola Jan 2013

Exploring The Relevance Of Feminist Leadership In Theological Education Of Nigeria, Adesanya İbiyinka Olusola

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Feminist leadership is very important in theological education as it would seek to deconstruct stereotypical assumptions about women and gender in Christian theological traditions. Unfortunately, most of the theological schools in Nigeria do not have feminist as leaders. Five reasons why feminist leadership are needed in theological schools have been identified as, the bible teaching that women brought sin and death to the world, servant hood notion of women, scandal of particularity, male domination of ministries and theological methods and process that are full of stereotypes. All this does not provide women a unique opportunity to discover and develop their …

Sweet Fanny Adams And Sarah's Law: The Creation Of Rhetorical Shorthand In The Print Press, Samantha Pegg Jan 2013

Sweet Fanny Adams And Sarah's Law: The Creation Of Rhetorical Shorthand In The Print Press, Samantha Pegg

SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)

This article considers two cases of female child murder, modern and historical, where the victims have become household names. The framing of these cases in the print press is explored in order to address how similar cases resulted in the divergent use of victims’ names and how the names of both victims became emblematic. It is suggested that addressing ideological backdrops, specifically conceptualisations of childhood and how these can be linked to more disparate concerns, is vital in explaining this etymological divergence. More generally, it is suggested that how an episode has been received is reliant upon how these ideological …

Criminal Responses And Financial Misconduct In Twenty-First Century Britain: Tradition And Points Of Departure, And The Significance Of The Conscious Past, Gary Wilson, Sarah Wilson

SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)

The Financial Services (Banking Reform) Bill 2013/14 (hereafter Banking Reform Bill) is set to introduce a new criminal offence of reckless misconduct by senior bank staff. The introduction of such an offence was recommended in the Final Report of the Parliamentary Commission on Banking Standards (PCBS) Changing Banking for Good, published 19 June 2013; as part of a 'package of recommendations to raise standards'. This particular recommendation had been widely anticipated. A short time before this Report, the PCBS Chair, Andrew Tyrie MP, had bemoaned the lack of 'orange jumpsuits' being donned by bankers. Equally, press reportage that 'reckless bankers' …

Violet Van Der Elst's Use Of Spectacle And Militancy In Her Campaign Against The Death Penalty In England, Lizzie Seal Jan 2013

Violet Van Der Elst's Use Of Spectacle And Militancy In Her Campaign Against The Death Penalty In England, Lizzie Seal

SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)

Violet van der Elst launched her campaign against the death penalty in the mid-1930s. She employed direct action tactics outside prisons on execution morning, such as leading the crowd in song and breaking through police cordons. These were not only designed to engage and include the crowd that was present, but also to grab the attention of newspaper readers. Her approach to campaigning made deliberate use of spectacle and, coupled with her direct action techniques, can be understood as a form of post-suffragette militancy. This article explores the influence of the legacy of the suffragette movement on Violet van der …

Bearing Silent Witness: A Grandfather's Secret Attestation To German War Crimes In Occupied France, Mckay M. Smith Jan 2013

Bearing Silent Witness: A Grandfather's Secret Attestation To German War Crimes In Occupied France, Mckay M. Smith

SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)

Scholars have acknowledged that the study of World War II era intelligence can be an extremely arduous undertaking. Intelligence tradecraft, by its very nature, requires that certain information remain secret. It necessitates the sustained concealment of activities or events. Moreover, this government emphasis on secrecy often results in the suppression of sensitive information from historians and citizens alike. Thus, one must turn to declassified records of the past to reshape modern conceptions of history. This article should be regarded as a spirited departure from traditional scholarship. Specifically, it utilizes the case study method to communicate a powerful message related to …

Judging Identity, Carla Pratt Jan 2013

Judging Identity, Carla Pratt

Faculty Articles

Identity matters when it comes to judging. It is important to have judges with intersecting subordinated identities on our courts because these judges contribute unique perspectives that can be different from judges lacking the lived experience of intersectionality. With the appointment of Justice Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court came many questions, including one about whether her identity as a Latina would affect her decision making on the Court. The question is a legitimate one prompted by a statement Justice Sotomayor made in a speech several years prior to her nomination to the Court. In a lecture given …

A Review Of Literature On Teaching Evaluation, Martin Reardon Jan 2013

A Review Of Literature On Teaching Evaluation, Martin Reardon

MERC Publications

The members of MERC’s Policy and Planning Council are well aware of the challenges that school divisions are facing as they conscientiously endeavor to honor the stipulations of the Guidelines (2011) in a loosely coupled system. In keeping with the context out of which the request for this literature review arose, a sense of the literature invoked in the Research Base (2011) has been taken for granted. The focus of this document, then, is on literature—predominantly recent literature—that addresses issues associated with the implementation of teacher evaluation. This emphasis on implementation is in keeping with MERC’s mission to engage in …

Expanding Rape Shield Laws: Breaking Through Prejudice For Better Protection Of Battered Women, Sarah C. Ayres Jan 2013

Expanding Rape Shield Laws: Breaking Through Prejudice For Better Protection Of Battered Women, Sarah C. Ayres

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues for the expansion of rape shield laws to civil cases involving orders of protection, asserting that the exclusion of evidence regarding consensual sex between a victim and her abuser is crucial to counteract prejudicial stereotypes and provide better legal protection for battered women.

Unlikely Partners: Tort Law As A Tool For Trans Activism, Courtney Sirwatka Jan 2013

Unlikely Partners: Tort Law As A Tool For Trans Activism, Courtney Sirwatka

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that tort law reform and trans activism can mutually benefit each other by addressing systemic discrimination and advancing equality for trans individuals. It critiques the legal system for perpetuating discrimination through its emphasis on physical injury over emotional or sexual harm and its refusal to validate trans identities. The analysis proposes that recognizing sexual autonomy and reproduction as protected interests in tort law, along with legal education reforms, could legitimize trans narratives and lead to meaningful change.

A New Approach To An Old Problem: Defining Nursing’S Role In Successful Transitions To Long-Term Residential Care, Kyleen Aldrich

Honors College Theses

A growing body of nursing research addresses the transitional period for older adults entering long-term residential care. However, gaps exist in our understanding of nursing’s role in the transition process. Our aim is to examine the available evidence and develop a model of nursing strategies and interventions to ease the transition to long-term care. This model describes interventions that nurses can incorporate into everyday practice.

A literature review was conducted to examine the transitional care needs and interventions for older adults with a goal of developing a model addressing transitions to long-term care.

Most nursing studies provided descriptive information about …

Cloud Privacy Audit Framework: A Value-Based Design, David Coss Jan 2013

Cloud Privacy Audit Framework: A Value-Based Design, David Coss

Theses and Dissertations

The rapid expansion of cloud technology provides enormous capacity, which allows for the collection, dissemination and re-identification of personal information. It is the cloud’s resource capabilities such as these that fuel the concern for privacy. The impetus of these concerns are not too far removed from those expressed by Mason in 1986, when he identified privacy as one of the biggest ethical issues facing the information age. There seems to be continuous ebb and flow relationship with respect to privacy concerns and the development of new information communication technologies such as cloud computing. Privacy issues are a concern to all …

What?: Visual Interpretations Of The Miscommunication Between The Hearing And Deaf, Virginia Shou

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis visualizes the communication challenges both latent and obvious of my daily life as a hard of hearing individual. By focusing on a variety of experiences and examples I demonstrate the implications of a hard of hearing individual’s life. The prints, objects and videos that I have created for my visual thesis aim to enrich the understanding of a broader public on issues regularly faced by Deaf people. At the heart of my work my goal is to generate mutual empathy between the hearing and the Deaf.

Private Memorials On Public Space: Roadside Crosses At The Intersection Of The Free Speech Clause And The Establishment Clause, Amanda Reid Jan 2013

Private Memorials On Public Space: Roadside Crosses At The Intersection Of The Free Speech Clause And The Establishment Clause, Amanda Reid

Nebraska Law Review

Private roadside memorials are part of a growing trend among the bereaved who seek to “make sense of senseless deaths” along the public roadways.2 These memorials, which often feature a Latin cross, are part of deeply meaningful bereavement practices that support the grieving process. As such, these memorials are created to satisfy a human need during a time of crisis and are, therefore, largely constructed without regard to the legality of erecting such markers.3 Courts have yet to provide clear guidance on the constitutionality of erecting and maintaining these private memorials on public spaces. This Article considers the constitutional guideposts …

The Impact Of Service-Learning On Academics Related To Neurogenic Communication Disorders, Ricki A. Konnerup Jan 2013

The Impact Of Service-Learning On Academics Related To Neurogenic Communication Disorders, Ricki A. Konnerup

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"Service-Learning (SL) is a pedagogical approach used to assist students in higher education in learning academic material by providing them an experience with a community partner. SL involves academic course objectives that are linked to a community need and includes student reflection on the experience (Goldberg, McCormick Richburg, & Wood, 2006). SL research is limited, but has been an increasing interest for medical, sociology, education, and communication disorders fields. This study describes the effect that SL has on academic learning related to neurogenic communication disorders, attitudes towards SL, and community benefits. One section of a senior level undergraduate course in …

Death Penalty Politics And Symbolic Law In Russia, Olga B. Semukhina, John F. Galliher Jan 2013

Death Penalty Politics And Symbolic Law In Russia, Olga B. Semukhina, John F. Galliher

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

In contemporary Russia there is widespread support for the death penalty. Recent Russian presidents have endorsed the nation’s entry into the European Community (EC). The dilemma is that the price of membership into the EC is total abolition of capital punishment. The Russian Duma is much less popular than the president, even though it sides with public opinion in supporting capital punishment. Since 1997, these conflicting political positions have been temporarily neutralized by leaving capital punishment legislation in place but allowing the Russian president to offer clemency to all sentenced to death. In 1999, the Constitutional Court of Russia placed …

Strange Traffic: Sex, Slavery & The Freedom Principle, Anders Walker Jan 2013

Strange Traffic: Sex, Slavery & The Freedom Principle, Anders Walker

All Faculty Scholarship

This article uses the recent prosecution of a sex trafficking case in rural Missouri to argue three points. One, the federal law of trafficking is currently being used in unanticipated ways, including the apprehension of individuals who pay for sex. Two, trafficking invites creative use precisely because it provides prosecutors with a more salient justification for punishment than either legal moralism or harm; a rhetorical plea to anti-slavery that enjoys a longstanding but under-theorized role in criminal law rhetoric. Three, anti-slavery’s recurrence in criminal law rhetoric underscores a larger doctrinal point, namely that H.L.A. Hart’s version of the harm principle …

Selling 'Fracking': Legitimation Of High Speed Oil And Gas Extraction In The Marcellus Shale Region, Jacob R. Matz Jan 2013

Selling 'Fracking': Legitimation Of High Speed Oil And Gas Extraction In The Marcellus Shale Region, Jacob R. Matz

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The advent of horizontal hydraulic fracture drilling, or 'fracking,' a technology used to access oil and natural gas deposits, has allowed for the extraction of deep, unconventional shale gas and oil deposits in various shale seams throughout the United States and world. One such shale seam, the Marcellus shale, extends from New York State, across Pennsylvania, and throughout West Virginia, where shale gas development has significantly increased within the last decade. This boom has created a massive amount of economic activity surrounding the energy industry, creating jobs for workers, income from leases and royalties for landowners, and profits for energy …

Using Narrative As A Tool To Locate And Challenge Pre Service Teacher Bodies In Health And Physical Education, Jennifer A. Mcmahon, Dawn Penney

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper reports on research that has explored the use of narrative as a pedagogical tool in pre service teacher education. Specifically, we pursue the use of narrative to engage with pre service teachers’ embodied experiences [their lived body] and the ways in which these experiences are in turn currently influencing their ‘living bodies’ in regard to what Health and Physical Education (HPE) is and how it should be taught. Data in the form of an assemblage of pre service teachers’ narratives are presented to show how both the lived and living body contributes to thoughts and ideas about HPE. …

On The Design Of It-Enabled Self-Care Systems: A Socio-Technical Perspective, Omar F. El-Gayar, Surendra Sarnikar, Abdullah Hamdi Saleh Wahbeh

Research & Publications

Advances in information technology (IT) have resulted in a proliferation of IT-based solution to support the self-care and management for healthy individuals as well as patients with chronic conditions. Despite these advances, the adoption and diffusion of these solutions into practice is limited. The objective of this paper is to enhance adoption and diffusion by providing actionable recommendations for the design of IT systems for self-care. The recommendations are grounded in socio-technical design theory and in an extensive review of self-care literature. The findings indicate that despite the diversity of disease conditions, users, technologies, and implementation environments, IT-solutions for self-care …
