Violence against women (VAW) is universally identified as a barrier to legal, social, political, and economic equality for women, violating their rights and fundamental freedoms. This article brings together existing literature and empirical research on addressing such violence in Papua New Guinea (PNG), providing results that can inform future work in this area. The literature review examines the causes of violence against women and the role that communication for development (C4D) can play in addressing these issues. The Use Your Voice campaign was implemented in PNG in late 2011 in an effort to promote speaking out against violence and displace …
Knowledge Of Juvenile Sex Offender Registration Laws As A Predictor Of Adolescent Sexual Behavior, Cynthia J. Najdowski, Margaret C. Stevenson, Tisha Ra Wiley
Knowledge Of Juvenile Sex Offender Registration Laws As A Predictor Of Adolescent Sexual Behavior, Cynthia J. Najdowski, Margaret C. Stevenson, Tisha Ra Wiley
Psychology Faculty Scholarship
Because juveniles can now be registered as sex offenders, we conducted a pilot study to investigate awareness of these policies and sexual behavior histories in a convenience sample of 53 young adults (ages 18 to 23, 79% women). These preliminary data revealed that 42% percent of participants were unaware that youth under the age of 18 can be registered as sex offenders, and when informed that they can be, participants were unaware of the breadth of adolescent sexual behavior that warrants registration. Furthermore, those unaware of juvenile registration policies, compared to those who were aware, were marginally more likely to …

The Expansion Of Transgenic Soybeans And The Killing Of Indigenous Peasants In Argentina, Pablo Lapegna
The Expansion Of Transgenic Soybeans And The Killing Of Indigenous Peasants In Argentina, Pablo Lapegna
Societies Without Borders
In the last two years, four activists of peasant and indigenous organizations have died in the context of land conflicts in Northern Argentina. This article examines the expansion of genetically modified soybeans and the political alliances of national and provincial governments to understand these events. The focus is put on the recent killing of a peasant activist in the province of Santiago del Estero, the media coverage of this event, and the reactions of popular organizations. The case represents an example of the “dark side of the boom” of the recent expansion of agribusiness in South America.
Narratives Of Mass Violence: The Role Of Memory And Memorialization In Addressing Human Rights Violations In Post-Conflict Rwanda And Uganda, Carla De Yeaza, Nicole Fox
Narratives Of Mass Violence: The Role Of Memory And Memorialization In Addressing Human Rights Violations In Post-Conflict Rwanda And Uganda, Carla De Yeaza, Nicole Fox
Societies Without Borders
This paper explores the question of what do Rwandans and Ugandans working on memorialization initiatives deem important when discussing the role of individual and collective memory in the aftermath of mass violence and human rights violations. Social scientists and human rights scholars have asserted the importance of memory in both reconciliation and healing after mass violence. However, it is difficult to determine the most appropriate way to facilitate reconciliation between groups who previously raped, stole from or killed one another, as there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach. While policies cannot remedy the murder of one’s family, scholars, activists and practitioners argue …
Freedom With Chinese Characteristics, Keith Kerr
Freedom With Chinese Characteristics, Keith Kerr
Societies Without Borders
The following “note from the field” is based off of first-hand observations and experiences had while living and working as an affiliated professor at a Chinese university. Noting the well-known political restrictions existing in China, the piece argues that against dominant Western narratives depicting a lack of freedom within China, there ostensibly appear spaces offering levels of emotional and interactional freedoms greater than what one can experience in the West. This argument is framed within the thought of Western intellectuals such as David Riesman, Erich Fromm, C. Wright Mills and Stjepan Mestrovic, and is advanced by considering the vast historical …

Negotiating Uncertainty In The Right To Asylee Status, Erin Rider
Negotiating Uncertainty In The Right To Asylee Status, Erin Rider
Societies Without Borders
The asylum system regards asylum seekers as actors with privilege and resources, and expects them to present sound cases documenting their rights to asylee status. However, the asylum system fails to consider the lack of autonomy of asylum seekers, as they must manage trauma, lack of resources, new host societies, and the asylum process. Based on interviews (n=14) with asylum seekers, general findings reveal that inherent barriers within the asylum system position asylum seekers into a context of insecurity that undermines their agency and ability to achieve asylee status. The examination of asylum seekers interacting with the United States asylum …
Mexicans In New York City, Luis F. Nuno
Mexicans In New York City, Luis F. Nuno
Societies Without Borders
New York City witnessed a substantial growth of Mexican immigration in the postCold War Era. This paper reviews the research literature on these changes across the urban landscape in light of the sociology of human rights in the contemporary era criminalizing migration. The number of births to Mexican mothers in New York City’s hospitals between 1985-2006 documents a near ten times growth in the number of Mexican American babies born in New York City for the twenty-year period between 1985-2005. Additionally, ethnographic data examine the lived experiences of Mexican immigrants in New York City during this era. The research offers …
Stress Theory, Health, And Health Care: Self-Care Technology And Self-Identity Reinvigoration, Nicholas Gibson
Stress Theory, Health, And Health Care: Self-Care Technology And Self-Identity Reinvigoration, Nicholas Gibson
Societies Without Borders
How does self-care technology influence self-concept in patients with chronic health care needs? Progressive patient reliance on self-care is tantamount to the extension of independence and self-reliance in all countries with populations experiencing chronic health challenges. With remarkable advancements in medical technology of late, understanding the effects of self-care technology on patient well-being is critical. This work explores existing literature on the intersection of medical care and technological interventions in populations dealing with chronic illnesses, through the lens of a researcher involved with the HOPE Project in Hawai'i exploring technology use by patients undergoing dialysis treatments. The perspective of this …
Grappling With Structure, Social Construction, And Morality: Towards A Human Rights Approach To Social Problems Instruction, Eric Bonds
Societies Without Borders
This essay proposes a human rights approach to social problems instruction, whereby social problems are defined as conditions in which a group’s human rights are violated due to their position in a social structure. The approach advocated here draws upon the strengths of the values-structure and social constructionist heritages in the teaching of social problems, while also correcting for some of their individual weaknesses and limitations. The essay closes by outlining what such a class might look like and includes a list of possible teaching resources and a sample class syllabus.
Community And The Built Form Resident Idealizations And Reactions To The Opening Of A Neighborhood Supermarket, Brandon Berry
Community And The Built Form Resident Idealizations And Reactions To The Opening Of A Neighborhood Supermarket, Brandon Berry
Theses & ETDs
Past research has shown that residents of moderate-density urban and suburban regions prefer communities with a localized sense of place. Neighborhoods with strong local identity tend to exhibit greater resilience and lower rates of disorder. However, the ability to develop that place is often restrained by other, more immediate needs, such as access to critical resources. This research focuses on two neighborhoods with different demographic makeups and their reaction to the opening of a nationally-owned neighborhood supermarket. Prior to the start of this study, both neighborhoods had been lacking a full-scale grocery store within their boundaries for two years. While …

Stalin’S Boots And The March Of History (Post-Communist Memories), Roland K. Végső
Stalin’S Boots And The March Of History (Post-Communist Memories), Roland K. Végső
Department of English: Faculty Publications
I would like to propose here is precisely the invention of a relation to history and the public sphere of sociality that deconstructs the trauma/nostalgia opposition. The theoretical goal is to separate concrete narrative forms from actual political contents. It follows from the previous point that it might be possible to conceive of historical moments or concrete rhetorical situations in which we need to rely on nostalgic rather than traumatic narratives in order to imagine progressive political change. In these situations, the political task could be the development of a certain “critical nostalgia” that does not try to replace trauma …
Introduction To The Naked Communist: Cold War Modernism And The Politics Of Popular Culture, Roland K. Végső
Introduction To The Naked Communist: Cold War Modernism And The Politics Of Popular Culture, Roland K. Végső
Department of English: Faculty Publications
The first half of The Naked Communist is devoted to the theoretical and historical foundations of my reading of anti-Communist fictions. After the theoretical introduction, I examine anti-Communist aesthetic ideology by first analyzing its political and then its aesthetic components.
In the second half, I examine the way the culture of anti-Communism defined the “world” as the ultimate horizon of political imagination. Included is a brief overview of some of the most popular texts of the given genre.
Finally, I conclude these chapters with a reading of particular authors.

This feature article shares the results of a national environmental scan conducted to identify professional development programs offered for school age providers across the nation through the Cooperative Extension System. A purposeful sample comprised of representatives from state extension offices throughout the country included 135 respondents from 48 states. Results showed 139 professional development programs for school age providers were offered through the Cooperative Extension System. The majority of programs offered professional development in the areas of health, nutrition, safety, youth development, and quality afterschool environments. This article summarizes the findings of the environmental scan, including number of contact hours, …

Materials And Environments That Promote Learning In The Primary Years .G2199, Jennifer Gerdes, Tonia Renee Durden, Leanne Manning
Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications
Teachers can use multiple strategies to create a stimulating and responsive environment for children in the primary years. These strategies can lead to children’s overall social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development.
To promote optimal development of the whole child, children need a variety of materials available to them daily that provide both challenge and success. They also need daily exposure to music, art, and movement activities.
The Rise Of Carrots And The Decline Of Sticks, Gerrit De Geest, Giuseppe Dari-Mattiacci
The Rise Of Carrots And The Decline Of Sticks, Gerrit De Geest, Giuseppe Dari-Mattiacci
University of Chicago Law Review
There is a remarkable tendency in modern legal systems to increasingly use carrots. This trend is not limited to legal systems but can also be observed in, for instance, parenting styles, social control mechanisms, and even law schools' teaching methods. Yet, at first glance, sticks appear to be a more efficient means of inducing people to comply with legal rules or social norms because they are not meant to be applied (thus minimizing transaction costs and risks) and may cause fewer unintended distributional distortions. So how can we justify the widespread use of carrots? This Article shows that carrots can …
The Connected Lawyer: The Evolving 'Operating System' Of The Networked Professional, Patrick C. Brayer
The Connected Lawyer: The Evolving 'Operating System' Of The Networked Professional, Patrick C. Brayer
Faculty Works
The legal profession must prepare for generations of networked law students and attorneys who demand interaction with a professional system in the same way they experience connection in their social system. As technology evolves, new professionals will expect more autonomy and control over their interactions. The central thesis of this Essay is that technology allows greater control of an individual’s professional interactions, and this control can provide a benefit, but devices of connection can also serve as a barrier to the authentic experiences that provide professional learning and innovation.
Socio-Economic Influences On The Party Affiliation Of Hispanic Voters, Angelo Montagner
Socio-Economic Influences On The Party Affiliation Of Hispanic Voters, Angelo Montagner
HIM 1990-2015
Voting analysts in the United States have attempted to predict political orientation based on race, gender, occupation, educational achievement, and economic background. Yet, the substantial amount of research available on these factors has been directed toward the understanding of the white-majority vote. Now, as a result of the overwhelming growth of ethnic minority populations scholars are beginning to look at the potential decisive role of ethnic minority voters. Part of this newly formed voting bloc consists of Hispanics which are now one of the fastest and largest racial minority groups in the United States. This thesis aims to understand the …
