Ideological Exclusion In The Post-9/11 Era: A Case For Increased Judicial Oversight And Recognition Of The Right To Hear Speech Note, Sean D. Acevedo Jan 2013

Ideological Exclusion In The Post-9/11 Era: A Case For Increased Judicial Oversight And Recognition Of The Right To Hear Speech Note, Sean D. Acevedo

Connecticut Law Review

Following the terror attacks of September 11, 2001, the George W. Bush Administration actively engaged in a policy of ideological exclusion. During the Bush Administration, the State Department routinely denied visas to foreign nationals whose political views it disfavored. The primary targets of ideological exclusion during the post-9/11 era were members of the Arab and Muslim intellectual communities. Opponents have argued that ideological exclusion violates United States citizens’ First Amendment right to hear and debate speech. After offering an extensive background of the history of ideological exclusion in the United States, this Note argues that the Bush Administration’s policy of …

Integration Reclaimed: A Review Of Gary Peller's Critical Race Consciousness Book Review, Michelle Adams Jan 2013

Integration Reclaimed: A Review Of Gary Peller's Critical Race Consciousness Book Review, Michelle Adams

Connecticut Law Review

Integration occupies a contested and often paradoxical place in legal and public policy scholarship and the American imagination. Today, more Americans are committed to integration than ever before. Yet this attachment to integration is hardly robust. There is a widespread perception that integration has failed. A vanishingly small percentage of social and economic resources are spent on integration. At the same time, some progressives and those who would otherwise consider themselves on the “left” criticize integration as insufficiently attentive to economic equality and dismissive of black identity and culture. Scholars from across the political spectrum have sought to explain this …

The Unbundling Of Legal Services And Its Implications For Law Librarianship, Kara Noel Jan 2013

The Unbundling Of Legal Services And Its Implications For Law Librarianship, Kara Noel

Borgeson Paper Archive

This paper addresses the role of law libraries with respect to online sites that give free or low-cost legal advice. In this paper, I will argue that the gap in access to legal services for the lower and middle class needs addressing, and that the public law librarian’s role in facilitating access to justice can be improved by helping pro se patrons access the growing number of free or nominal cost online legal advice resources. The rise in online legal advice sites comes with concerns from the legal profession regarding the possible ethical duties and responsibilities of giving legal advice …

Understanding Social Care, Kevin Lalor, Perry Share Jan 2013

Understanding Social Care, Kevin Lalor, Perry Share

Books/Book chapters

There is a good chance you are reading this because you are planning to be, or already are, a social care practitioner. Yet for many in Irish society, even those entering the field themselves, the meaning of the term ‘social care’ is not self- evident. A common question directed at social care students and professionals alike is, ‘What do you do?’ Misconceptions abound and in many cases practitioners are not accorded the recognition or status they deserve, partly as a consequence of a limited understanding of what the term means This chapter explores the notion of social care itself. Some …

Together Old And Young (Toy), Anne Fitzpatrick Jan 2013

Together Old And Young (Toy), Anne Fitzpatrick

Reports

Intergenerational learning involves different age groups learning together or learning from each other in a range of settings. It is viewed as being important in contemporary Europe as it facilitates learning that might otherwise be diminished due to changing family structures, migration, technological changes and growing age segregation. Interest in intergenerational learning stems from new understandings of the process and participation in education and learning. This includes the notions of lifelong and lifewide learning as well as the need to respond positively to the growing separation of generations and the subsequent distance between old and young. It also can be …

Diversity And Motivations Among Volunteers In Nonprofit Youth Development Programs, Emily Thielmann Jan 2013

Diversity And Motivations Among Volunteers In Nonprofit Youth Development Programs, Emily Thielmann

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations

Portland, Maine, has a variety of programs that connect volunteers with youth based on particular risk factors. While there are many criteria that affect the outcomes programs yield for youth, the quality and reach of many of these small nonprofit programs is dependent on their volunteer capacity. The goals of this descriptive research project were to identify: nonprofit youth development program volunteer characteristics compared with local populations and volunteers nationally; motivations or benefits such volunteers associate with volunteering; and factors associated with volunteers’ overall satisfaction and longevity.

Evolution And Change In Civic Engagement Organizations: A Life-Cycle Analysis Of The Maine League Of Young Voters, Nathan J.R. Grant

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations

The Maine League of Young Voters is an organization involved in educational and political civic engagement activities in the State of Maine. A membership base consisting of hundreds of grassroots members makes up the base of the organization. By studying the life cycle of the Maine League of Young Voters and comparing it to similar civic engagement organizations, the research here aims to increase the body of knowledge available about how these types of organizations evolve and change. Findings from surveys and interviews indicated that the organization was over-extending the membership, despite a strong grassroots network, and that more delegation …

The Effects Of Public Self-Consciousness And Embarrassability On College Student Drinking: Evidence In Support Of A Protective Self-Presentational Model, Lizabeth A. Crawford, Katherine B. Novak Jan 2013

The Effects Of Public Self-Consciousness And Embarrassability On College Student Drinking: Evidence In Support Of A Protective Self-Presentational Model, Lizabeth A. Crawford, Katherine B. Novak

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In this article we examine the effects of public self-consciousness (PSC) and a cross-situational reactivity to embarrassing encounters (EMB) on college students’ levels of alcohol consumption by levels of perceived peer drinking. The analysis of self-report data from two undergraduate samples (n = 118 and n = 195) yielded virtually identical results and suggests that PSC and EMB affect alcohol use primarily among students with friends who drink heavily. Among these individuals, our findings are consistent with a protective self-presentational model. While PSC increased levels of alcohol consumption among students who believed drinking to be prevalent within their social …

Daughters Of Single Fathers: Working As A Team, Heather Currie, Steve Sider Jan 2013

Daughters Of Single Fathers: Working As A Team, Heather Currie, Steve Sider

Education Faculty Publications

In this paper, we consider the perspectives of daughters of single fathers as they reflect on their experiences and relationships with their fathers. The paper provides an opportunity to consider an under-represented group in the literature on single parent families. Three themes emerge from the qualitative research design: parental expectations and involvement, household tasks, and family relationships. We consider these themes in light of the work done by Bronte-Tinkew et al (2010) and Risman (1986) regarding the involvement and support of single fathers in the lives of their children. We conclude by providing suggestions for teachers and other professionals regarding …

Coca: An Andean Daily Chew, Robert C. Bradley Jan 2013

Coca: An Andean Daily Chew, Robert C. Bradley

School of Art & Design Faculty Publications

“Coca: An Andean Daily Chew” distinctly separates the benign tradition of coca chewing in South America, an 8,000 year old practice, from the modern plague of cocaine addiction. The article specifically addresses Western misconceptions about coca. The text goes on to detail many aspects of the process of coca chewing, from the fields of the Andes to the mouths of the chewer. Coca is chewed with quick lime and this process is compared to the preparation of corn tortillas in Mexico. The most celebrated variety of coca, Erythroxylum novogranatense var. truxillense, or Tupa Coca in Quechua, is positioned as the …

2 People in the Water Planning Picture

People have always had an impact on how water interacts with the landscape, but social scientists have long been absent from water policy discussions and decisions. Sociologist Douglas Jackson-Smith and his colleagues are working to change that and to shape our water future.

8 Designing Where the Water Goes

Streets, sidewalks, rooftops and patios all affect what happens when the rain falls, and what happens to stormwater effects every community. The design of streets and other landscape elements has a big impact on this important part of the water cycle and can help …

2 Utah 's Connection To Cleft Palate Nutritional epidemiologist Ron Munger has traveled to distant, developing countries to study the causes of cleft lip and cleft palate, but he also has a large population of people to study right here at home. Utah has the highest incidence of clefts in the nation, double the average for Caucasian Americans and Munger wants to know why.

Framing Disability: A Content Analysis Of Newspapers In Nigeria, Olusola John Ogundola Jan 2013

Framing Disability: A Content Analysis Of Newspapers In Nigeria, Olusola John Ogundola

Media Studies - Theses

This study examined how the media in Nigeria framed people with disabilities and issues concerning them with a view to appreciating how news media frames impact society's perception of people with disabilities. A textual analysis method was used to examine newspapers' reports of disability within the period of a decade - 2001 to 2010. The sample was drawn from two major newspapers in Nigeria - Daily Trust based in Abuja, north-central Nigeria and Nigerian Tribune based in Ibadan, south-western Nigeria. This was done to ascertain whether cultural and religious differences between the north (predominantly Islam) and south (predominantly Christian) impact …

Empowering And Engaging Students In Learning Research Methods, Rhonda Breit, Shaung Liu Jan 2013

Empowering And Engaging Students In Learning Research Methods, Rhonda Breit, Shaung Liu

Graduate School of Media and Communications

The capacity to conduct research is essential for university graduates to survive and thrive in their future career. However, research methods courses have often been considered by students as "abstract", "uninteresting", and "hard". Thus, motivating students to engage in the process of learning research methods has become a crucial challenge for lecturers. This paper reports a study which incorporates students' prior (international) experiences into learning academic research in order to enhance relatedness, engagement, and a sense of empowerment. The findings indicate that student attitudes to learning research methods are closely related to the level of their engagement in the learning …

Ch’ŏnsŏng between 2002 and 2006 and participated in protests against the government’s nationwide four major rivers restoration project between 2008 and 2012, focusing on the Nakdong River. She has made serious efforts to protect environment as a nun in the culturally and institutionally sexist South Korean Buddhist order in particular and in the culturally, not institutionally, sexist South Korean society in general.
