Indiana was admitted to the Union as the 19th state on December 11, 1816. Corydon, Indiana, located in southern Indiana, was the first state capitol until 1825, when the capital was moved to a more central location in Indianapolis. Indiana, located in the midwest, was formerly part of the Indiana Territory, dissolved in 1798. The first governor of the territory was William Henry Harrison, who served from 1800 until 1813. Harrison later became the into president of the United States, in 1840. Two constitutions have been ratified in Indiana: the first in 1816, and the current constitution in 1851. Indiana …

English Proficiency / Fluent English Proficient Students, Susan R. Adams
Scholarship and Professional Work – Education
K-12 students whose first language is not English are identified upon enrollment in U.S. schools through a home language survey and are immediately assessed to determine whether English as a second language (ESL) services are required. Students who do not pass this initial screening assessment are classified as English Language Learners (ELLs), or as limited English proficiency (LEP) students, and are identified to receive school-provided English language development (ELD) and accommodations. Students who pass the initial screener or who demonstrate English proficiency two years in a row on state-mandated annual assessments are deemed fluent or fully English proficient (FEP) students …

Statewide Study Of School Public Relations Personnel: Roles, Responsibilities, Relationships, And Budget Vote Outcomes, Catherine Knight
Statewide Study Of School Public Relations Personnel: Roles, Responsibilities, Relationships, And Budget Vote Outcomes, Catherine Knight
Education Student Dissertations
This two-part quantitative study expanded our understanding of school PR personnel in public school districts, particularly those who worked during the 2009-2012 budget years. Four cultural changes have redefined the paradigm of public education and served as a springboard for this study: technology-enhanced communications/ information retrieval, transparency in school district operations, accountability tied to student testing, and the Great Recession. The first section presented key facts, drawn from public information available from New York State, about school PR employment, including the number of school districts that employed PR personnel, the types of school districts most likely to employ them, and …
Strengthening Student Achievement Through Family Learning Events, Jacquelin Ann Charlton
Strengthening Student Achievement Through Family Learning Events, Jacquelin Ann Charlton
All Graduate Projects
Families and educators both have a great influence on a student's academic success. When the relationship between home and school is strained, students miss out on some of that success (Harris & Goodall, 2008). Parental influence is an important factor in a child's education, but parental engagement in their learning is even more important (Ho Sui-Chu & Williams, 1996). However, some parents may feel unwelcome or unneeded at school (Williams, Williams, & Ullman, 2002), so it's the educator's responsibility to understand and encourage parents to become more engaged in student learning. Hosting family learning events at school can build a …

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa
Background: Newborns and young infants suffer high rates of infections in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Timely access to appropriate antibiotic therapy is essential for reducing mortality. In an effort to develop community case management guidelines for young infants, 0–59 days old, with clinically diagnosed severe infections, or with fast breathing, 4 trials of simplified antibiotic therapy delivered in primary care clinics (Pakistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Nigeria) or at home (Bangladesh and Nigeria) are being conducted.
Methods: This article describes the scientific rationale for these trials, which share major elements of trial design. All the trials are …

The Global Sustainability Transition: It Is More Than Changing Light Bulbs, Michael P. Weinstein, R. Eugene Turner, Carles Ibanez

Current policies and norms to reconcile human demands for resources with the Earth’s ability to supply them have resulted in practices that mainly treat the symptoms of unsustainability rather than their underlying causes. Moreover, the increase in our knowledge about humankind’s role in ecosystems is not keeping pace with our understanding of the consequences of our actions, resulting in a deepening inability to address sustainability issues. The extreme complexity and intricate workings of the world require the expansion of our mental models in a systems-thinking framework if we are to realize a sustainable place for humans in it. The challenge …
Judging In Secular Times: Max Weber And The Rise Of Proportionality, David Schneiderman
Judging In Secular Times: Max Weber And The Rise Of Proportionality, David Schneiderman
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
This paper argues that the spread of proportionality analysis can be explained, in part, by the decline of metaphysics and universal morals in the modern social imaginary. Lacking societal consensus regarding many public policy questions, the judicial branch has turned to proportionality analysis as a means of managing this disagreement. By doing so, judges have transformed the administration of justice into a form of bureaucratic rule — represented by a mechanical churning of the justice machine — anticipated by Max Weber’s sociology of law. After discussing a few examples drawn from Canadian jurisprudence and elsewhere, the paper concludes by asking …
Negotiating Uncommon Spaces: Fostering Common Ground In A Summer Bridge Writing Classroom, Nicola Blake
Negotiating Uncommon Spaces: Fostering Common Ground In A Summer Bridge Writing Classroom, Nicola Blake
Publications and Research
This article describes a summer bridge writing course that engages students who are actively transitioning from high school to college. The summer bridge course curriculum supports students’ meaning-making efforts through a variety of text-based writing activities which helps students begin the process of critical inquiry: extending arguments, poking holes in theories, and putting these theories in conversation with multiple voices from the real world. The writing activities in the program create a common ground for students where they can encounter texts and discover their own voices. Fostering open-endedness in students is a gradual process, and students acquire critical inquiry skills …
Particularizing Universal Education In Postcolonial Sierra Leone, Grace Pai
Particularizing Universal Education In Postcolonial Sierra Leone, Grace Pai
Publications and Research
This paper presents a vertical case study of the history of universalizing education in postcolonial Sierra Leone from the early 1950s to 1990 to highlight how there has never been a universal conception of universal education. In order to unite a nation behind a universal ideal of schooling, education needed to be adapted to different subpopulations, as the Bunumbu Project did for rural Sierra Leoneans in the 1970s to 1980s. While the idea of “localizing” education was sound, early program success was undermined by a lack of clarity behind terms like “rural” or “community.” This was exacerbated by a change …

Proving Power: Men's Opinions On Gendered Public Harassment, Mia Newell
Proving Power: Men's Opinions On Gendered Public Harassment, Mia Newell
Theses & ETDs
The objective of this study was to understand the relationship between masculinity and public harassment. By examining men's understandings of harassment, and motivations for these types of interactions, a broader exploration of gender performativity and the role of masculinity in public spaces was made possible. Fifteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with men in public spaces. Participants' descriptions of harassment highlighted beliefs that harassment is about achieving, expressing, and maintaining power. These men identified proving masculinity as a motivation for harassing women in public. They also believed that harassment was related to a desire to feel powerful and express heterosexual desire. …

South Africa: Newsrooms In Transition, Margaretha Geertsema-Sligh
Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication
South African is a beautiful country with a a diverse citizenry at the Southernmost tip of the African continent. But the nation also has a long history of racial struggle, which includes an era of racial segregation, called apartheid that ended formally in 1994 after nearly 50 years of policital oppression and protest. The country today is a land of contrasts. It has a vibrant media scene and one of the most progressive constitutions in the world, guaranteeing equality for all and freedom of the press. Women are breaking through newsroom boundaries, making up about half of the journalism workforce, …

A Documentary Narrative: The African-American Male, Rebekah Rifareal
AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship
I went to New York with a couple of friends of mine. We’re all artists. It was a trip through the Kinetic Imaging department. We’re in New York and we’re these black males – we felt free to do anything we wanted. We recorded ourselves spitting poetry or dancing. The idea kind of came to me: You know, I want to do a film that has that freedom, that has that feeling of not caring about a specific plot line, but that shows the aspects of who we are out there in public performance. So when I came back to …

Appreciative Inquiry Summits And Organizational Knowledge Creation: A Social Systems Perspective, Emi Makino
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this exploratory study is to develop alternative models for analyzing the systems dynamics of a large group conference format called appreciative inquiry (AI) summits. I apply Luhmann’s social systems theory to the strategizing activities of AI summits to examine how this particular format is capable of generating organizational knowledge. An AI summit is a strategic planning conference in which hundreds of internal and external stakeholders collectively design the future of the organization through structured activities. It applies the principles of AI, a consulting method used in organizational development that attends to the positive aspects of an organization …

Perceptions And General Knowledge Of Online Social Networking Activity Of University Student-Athletes And Non-Student-Athletes, Cody T. Havard, Terry Eddy, Lamar Reams, Rebecca L. Stewart, Tariq Ahmad
Journal of Applied Sport Management
The current study investigated differences between student-athletes and non-student-athletes regarding online social networking (OSN) usage. In particular, types of usage, perceptions of monitoring, and knowledge and perceptions of inappropriate online behavior were examined. Participants were student-athletes and non-student-athletes at a mid-sized university in the Rocky Mountain Region, who were asked their perceptions regarding OSN. Results of independent samples t-tests revealed student-athletes felt that students in general were more knowledgeable of the dangers associated with OSN than were non-studentathletes. Further, student-athletes found provocative pictures posted on OSN profiles to be more acceptable than did non-student-athletes. Also, monitoring of online profiles by …

Comparing The Academic Performance Of High School Athletes And Non-Athletes In Kansas 2008-2009, Angela Lumpkin, Judy Favor
Journal of Applied Sport Management
The academic performance of students in grades 9-12 who did or did not participate in high school sports in Kansas during the 2008-2009 school year was analyzed. In addition to overall comparisons between athletes and non-athletes on GPAs, graduation rates, number of dropouts, ACT test scores, and state assessments, some gender, ethnicity, and grade comparisons were made. High school athletes earned higher grades, graduated at a higher rate, dropped out of school less frequently, and scored higher on state assessments than did non-athletes; results on the ACT were mixed. Differences between athletes and non-athletes were found for males and females …
Brand Establishment At The University Of Chicago: An Investigation Of De-Escalation Of Commitment In University Athletics, Adrien Bouchet, Michael Hutchinson
Brand Establishment At The University Of Chicago: An Investigation Of De-Escalation Of Commitment In University Athletics, Adrien Bouchet, Michael Hutchinson
Journal of Applied Sport Management
This article is a historical case analysis of the University of Chicago’s decision to discontinue participation in scholarship football in 1939. This decision was made at the behest of then University of Chicago President Robert Hutchins and Board of Trustee members in hopes of preserving the university’s academic reputation and brand. This article discusses the decision of a highly selective and academically prestigious research university to abandon Division I athletics during a period of athletic success by its football team. This unprecedented decision by a founding member of one of the nation’s premier athletic conferences, the Big Ten, has left …
Exploring Organizational Identity And Interpersonal Conflict In Sport Organizations, Shannon Kerwin
Exploring Organizational Identity And Interpersonal Conflict In Sport Organizations, Shannon Kerwin
Journal of Applied Sport Management
Interpersonal conflict is a dysfunctional group process that requires scholarly attention. Despite support for this claim, there is a gap in theoretical knowledge regarding the antecedent conditions to interpersonal disagreement in sport organizations. As such, the tenets of social identity theory were used to explore if and how organizational identity influences the perception of conflict in the regional sport commission context. A multi-method qualitative approach was adopted to serve the purpose of this study. The findings indicate that organizational identity is present, in-group/out-group identity formation contributes to status conflict, and that both formal and informal leadership play a role in …
Charism And The Consecrated Life In The Twentieth And Twenty-First Centuries, Danielle Peters
Charism And The Consecrated Life In The Twentieth And Twenty-First Centuries, Danielle Peters
Marian Library Studies
The rapid social, political, and cultural changes at the end of the nineteenth and at the dawn of the twentieth centuries are felt even today. Yet, the Church of that time was still predominantly European concerning her wellanschauung, discipline, and exercise of authority. In addition, "the strong resistance of the institutional church to the uncertainties of the post-Enlightenment world along with the maintenance of a nineteenth-century fortress identity at its institutional center had set up tensions within the various European Catholic communities." How did this mentality influence the communities of religious life and their awareness of being bearers of a …
Charism As Mission: A Marianist Model Of Ecclesiology, Johann G. Roten
Charism As Mission: A Marianist Model Of Ecclesiology, Johann G. Roten
Marian Library Studies
Much of what we call ecclesiology is in fact the history of trial and error in the pursuit of the Kingdom of God in this world. But there is more. Far from being purely clinical perception and assessment of things past and present, ecclesiology is a real life story, that of Jesus and those who attempt to follow him. Jesus is a person who really lived; the Church is the story of people who live their lives patterned on Jesus' person and work. The deeply existential and provisional character of Church, and the reflection about Church, cannot be downplayed or …
Comparing The Teaching Of Culture In Esl/Efl Classrooms, Daniela Silva
Comparing The Teaching Of Culture In Esl/Efl Classrooms, Daniela Silva
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present research is interested in investigating if culture is approached in efl and esl classrooms. If it is, we want to know the differences in curriculum (textbooks and syllabi), especially as it pertains to cultural knowledge, in an efl class in Brazil, compared to an esl class in the united states. We will also investigate the classroom practices for incorporating culture into the English language classrooms in those contexts. Finally, we will check which cultural teaching approaches are evident in those efl and esl classrooms. Although it is difficult to define precisely what is meant by the term "culture", …
