Development And Assessment Of Traditional And Innovative Media To Reduce Individual Hiv/Aids-Related Stigma Attitudes And Beliefs In India, Caricia Catalani, Diego Castaneda, Freya Spielberg

Prevention and Community Health Faculty Publications

Although stigma is considered a major barrier to effective response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, there is a lack of evidence on effective interventions. This media intervention took place among key HIV-vulnerable communities in Southern India. Two HIV stigma videos were created using techniques from traditional film production and new media digital storytelling. A series of 16 focus group discussions were held in 4 rural and 4 urban sites in South India, with specific groups for sex workers, men who have sex with men, young married women, and others. Focus groups with viewers of the traditional film (8 focus groups, 80 …

OBJECTIVES: To explore how the expression of emotional support in an online breast cancer support group changes over time, and what factors predict this pattern of change.

METHODS: We conducted growth curve modeling with data collected from 192 participants in an online breast cancer support group within the Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System (CHESS) during a 24-week intervention period.

RESULTS: Individual expression of emotional support tends to increase over time for the first 12 weeks of the intervention, but then decrease slightly with time after that. In addition, we found that age, living situation, comfort level with computer and the …

An 'Other' Scene, An 'Other' Point Of View: France's Colonial Family Romance, Protée's Postcolonial Fantasies And Claire Denis' 'Screen' Memories, Levilson C. Reis Jan 2013

An 'Other' Scene, An 'Other' Point Of View: France's Colonial Family Romance, Protée's Postcolonial Fantasies And Claire Denis' 'Screen' Memories, Levilson C. Reis

Modern Languages & Cultures Faculty Scholarship

This article challenges the widely held view that in Chocolat/Chocolate (Denis, 1988) the female protagonist, named 'France', owns the point of view. It argues that the film rejects such an exclusive narrative mode, and invites the spectator to reinterpret the story through the perspectives of others, especially that of the houseboy Protée. Drawing on Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalytical theories, this article re-examines three key flashback scenes (the mirror scene, the shower scene, and the big box-office scene), taking Protée's vantage point, while engaging with the para-text of Sartre's, Oyono's and Denis' own postcolonial views. The article finally shows that the …

Teaching The Carceral Crisis: An Ethical And Pedagogical Imperative, Taja-Nia Y. Henderson Jan 2013

Teaching The Carceral Crisis: An Ethical And Pedagogical Imperative, Taja-Nia Y. Henderson

University of Maryland Law Journal of Race, Religion, Gender and Class

"Teaching the Carceral Crisis: An Ethical and Pedagogical Imperative," demonstrates that although mass incarceration and mass conviction has increased in the United States, law school curricula has continued to lack any substantive discussion on these issues. The article highlights the need for law schools to improve their current curricula in order to prevent further stigmatization of criminal offenders and the continued increase of incarceration rates.

Experimental Markets With Frictions, Gabriele Camera, Marco Casari, Maria Bigoni Jan 2013

Experimental Markets With Frictions, Gabriele Camera, Marco Casari, Maria Bigoni

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Decentralized and impersonal exchange is fundamental to contemporary economies, where many interactions take place among individuals with low levels of information about their counterpart. We review the experimental literature about markets with frictions, where strangers interact in pairs formed at random in economies of indefinite duration. We focus on the impact of communication on the efficiency of the outcome and report results of a new experiment.

The Feminine Peter Pan, Felicia Jones Jan 2013

The Feminine Peter Pan, Felicia Jones

AWE (A Woman’s Experience)

Cross-casting in performances has effected outrage and social dilemmas in audiences, despite the important cultural messages those characters display. Since its beginning as a play, women have been cast as the young boy Peter in Peter Pan. J.M. Barrie wrote Peter Pan through inspiration from the young deaths of his brother and childhood friend, who will always remain in their youth. In order to capture that youthful innocence, females have been cast as Peter. This choice in casting was also made to achieve androgyny and transcend gender by blurring gender lines.

The “Arab Spring” And Its Theoretical Significance: Samuel Huntington’S Theory, “The Clash Of Civilizations,” Revisited, Mahmoud "Max" Kashefi Jan 2013

The “Arab Spring” And Its Theoretical Significance: Samuel Huntington’S Theory, “The Clash Of Civilizations,” Revisited, Mahmoud "Max" Kashefi

Societies Without Borders

Using the characteristics and the demands of the recent uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa or so called “Arab Spring,” this study questions the significance of some propositions deduced from Huntington’ popular theory of “The Clash of Civilizations.” The research asserts that globalization, especially the development of new technology, has created opportunities for the new generations in the region to be acculturated with a set of values reflecting their basic civilian and human rights. The new values, while credited with the development in the West, belong to all human beings and are gaining the status of universal human …

Risk And Response In Fracturing Policy, Hannah J. Wiseman Jan 2013

Risk And Response In Fracturing Policy, Hannah J. Wiseman

Scholarly Publications

An oil and gas extraction technique called hydraulic fracturing (also called fracing, fracking, or hydrofracking) has swept the country and has raised the stakes of the energy policy debate. As operators drill thousands of new wells and inject water and chemicals down these wells in order to fracture underground shale and tight sandstone formations, concerned citizens’ groups and the media have pointed to flaming tap water and have worried about chemical contamination; at the same time, industry representatives and many state regulators have sworn that the practice has never contaminated groundwater. The outpouring of attention to injection—just one stage of …

Latino Racial Reporting In The Us: To Be Or Not To Be, Clara E. Rodriguez, Michael Miyawaki, Grigoris Argeros

Sociology Faculty Publications

This review focuses on how Latinos report their race. This is an area that has recently experienced a major surge of interest in both government and academic circles. This review of the literature examines how and why Latinos report their race on the census, in surveys and in more qualitative studies. It reviews the vibrant and growing scholarly literature relevant to the questions of the placement – by self or others – of Latinos along the US color line, what determines it and how the Census has coped and is coping with it. We begin with a brief review of …

Festival Connections: People, Place And Social Capital, Bernadette Quinn Jan 2013

Festival Connections: People, Place And Social Capital, Bernadette Quinn

Books / Book chapters

To date, while some researchers have investigated the nature of social inter-relationships evident in festival settings, the literature is under-developed. This has prompted some researchers to search for alternative theoretical frameworks. Social capital is emerging as a theory which shows potential. Drawing on the findings of two exploratory studies, this paper considers the diverse sets of social relationships at the heart of festival activity, whilst taking account of the role that place plays in these interactions. Empirically it undertakes a qualitative study of a range of festival actors at the Waterside festival in Milton Keynes, England and the Temple Bar …
