Constructing An Islamist Vision: A Discourse Analysis Of Egyptian Islamist Websites, Youssef Esmat Morshedy Feb 2013

Constructing An Islamist Vision: A Discourse Analysis Of Egyptian Islamist Websites, Youssef Esmat Morshedy

Theses and Dissertations

After the January 25th 2011 revolution in Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) formed the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) and the Salafis formed several parties, including the popular "Al-Nour Party" (The Light) party. Many Egyptians joined the parties as they increased in popularity. On July 3 2013, however, the military intervened and deposed the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi, the first elected civilian president in Egypt’s modern history. This research is guided by the broad question of how Egyptian Islamic groups present their ideologies and principles to the Egyptian society via their websites. Islamic movements gained popularity after Egypt’s Jan. 25 …

The Organizational Context Of Research-Minded Practitioners: Challenges And Opportunities, Bowen Mcbeath, Michael J. Austin Feb 2013

The Organizational Context Of Research-Minded Practitioners: Challenges And Opportunities, Bowen Mcbeath, Michael J. Austin

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

If some practitioners are more research minded than others, then promising approaches for bridging the research to practice gap may be developed by describing research-minded practitioners and examining how to locate and support them. This article follows this basic logic in providing an overview of organizational development and practitioner support models for increasing knowledge use in human service organizations. The article begins with a conceptual profile of research-minded practi- tioners—individuals with an affinity for empirical inquiry, critical thinking, and reflection allied with a commitment to data- driven organizational improvement—and the organizational settings needed to host research-minded practice. This is followed …

Urban Geographies Of Romance: Meeting And Mating In Cairo, Elaine Van Dalen Feb 2013

Urban Geographies Of Romance: Meeting And Mating In Cairo, Elaine Van Dalen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis offers a spatial analysis of engagement and marriage among young people from Būlāq ad-Dakrūr, Cairo. It explores how these individuals negotiate their access to spaces within a neoliberal city and use them to find potential partners, meet with those partners once they have found them and to live with them when they first get married. The researcher had informal conversations with about 30 individuals between the age 18 and 30 and their family members, mostly during the spring of 2013. The outcome shows that the neighborhood has a primary function in the shaping of gendered subjectivities that try …

Combining Crowdsourcing And Google Street View To Identify Street-Level Accessibility Problems, Kotaro Hara, Victoria Le, Jon Froehlich Feb 2013

Combining Crowdsourcing And Google Street View To Identify Street-Level Accessibility Problems, Kotaro Hara, Victoria Le, Jon Froehlich

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Jon FroehlichAbstractPoorly maintained sidewalks, missing curb ramps, and other obstacles pose considerable accessibility challenges; however, there are currently few, if any, mechanisms to determine accessible areas of a city a priori. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of using untrained crowd workers from Amazon Mechanical Turk (turkers) to find, label, and assess sidewalk accessibility problems in Google Street View imagery. We report on two studies: Study 1 examines the feasibility of this labeling task with six dedicated labelers including three wheelchair users; Study 2 investigates the comparative performance of turkers. In all, we collected 13,379 labels and 19,189 verification …

The Diffusion Of Edublogs Among Educators In Egypt, Salma Hany Mohammed Omar Abdelrehim Feb 2013

The Diffusion Of Edublogs Among Educators In Egypt, Salma Hany Mohammed Omar Abdelrehim

Theses and Dissertations

This study gives some insight with regards to the diffusion of educational blogs among educators working in Egypt. Through the literature review the researcher establishes the importance of edublogs and gives examples of their use around the world, then goes on to answer questions about the reasons behind why edublogs are not being used by educators in Egypt. The research compares edublog adopters and nonusers by tackling three issues in the diffusion process. For the adopters, the study inquires about how they found out about the edublogs to see if it was traditional word of mouth as the diffusion of …

The Potential Rise Of An Islamist Youth Within 25 January Revolts: A Case Study Of The Muslim Brotherhood Youth, Dina Hosni Feb 2013

The Potential Rise Of An Islamist Youth Within 25 January Revolts: A Case Study Of The Muslim Brotherhood Youth, Dina Hosni

Theses and Dissertations

The thesis endeavors to offer a fresh perspective on the potential rise of Islamist youth, focusing on the pro-change ex-current MB youth as a potential subculture within 25 January and the assumption of the Egyptian MB to power. To validate this hypothesis, Gramsci's theory on hegemony and counter-hegemony has been deployed to study the rise of pro-change MB youth against Mubarak's authoritarian regime on the state level in tandem with counter-hegemony against the strict al-samc w-al-ṭāca principle (i.e. blind obedience) on the organizational level. Elements of social movement theory have been used to substantiate the relevance of counter-hegemony, namely, Gamson's …

Categorizing Women: Gender And Social Media During The 2011 Egyptian Revolution, Sydney Winston Barnes Feb 2013

Categorizing Women: Gender And Social Media During The 2011 Egyptian Revolution, Sydney Winston Barnes

Theses and Dissertations

From February 2011 to July 2012, formerly suppressed political parties struggled to fill the political void post-Hosni Mubarak. While debates about Egypt's political future circulated, individuals as well as dissident factions employed various interpretations of women and their roles to symbolically represent their varying ideologies. Despite the significance and economic value women produce as citizens, many political actors regularly bracket their concerns as irrelevant to the affairs of the state. As a result, political actors have engaged with new strategic techniques to access the various politicized publics that marginalized subaltern groups. The most publicized approach during this time, involved individual's …

El Thawra And El Balad: Narratives Of Youth About Protest Participation And Political Subjectivity In The January 25 Revolution, Ola Galal

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis documents the narratives of a group of Egyptian youth about their participation in the 18 days of protest and analyzes their narratives in terms of reasons and meanings of taking part in such events. First, I analyze how these youth constructed their memory of the 18 days and produced a certain version of history. Second, I look at the meanings they ascribed to the Revolution through examining their narratives about why and how they participated in the 18 days and how such an experience changed their perception about and their desire for participating in collective action and politics …

Design Flow Factors Using Socioeconomic Based Synthetic Wastewater Hydrographs For Small Communities, Haitham Yousri Elnakar Feb 2013

Design Flow Factors Using Socioeconomic Based Synthetic Wastewater Hydrographs For Small Communities, Haitham Yousri Elnakar

Theses and Dissertations

Reliable estimation of sewage flow rates is essential for the proper design of sewers, pumping stations, and treatment plants. The widely used design peaking factors for sewerage systems are usually related to the population served or the average sewage flow rate ignoring the difference between communities having same population but different socio-economic conditions and water use practice. In this study, a simulation model is developed to generate synthetic wastewater flow hydrographs resulting from a community with specific socio-economic conditions. The synthetic hydrographs are developed while retaining their commonly observed random behavior. The socioeconomic characteristics of a community are accounted for …

Grounded Theologies: ‘Religion’ And The ‘Secular’ In Human Geography, Justin K. H. Tse Feb 2013

Grounded Theologies: ‘Religion’ And The ‘Secular’ In Human Geography, Justin K. H. Tse

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper replies to Kong’s (2010) lament that geographers of religion have not sufficiently intervened in religious studies. It advocates ‘grounded theologies’ as a rubric by which to investigate contemporary geographies of religion in a secular age. Arguing that secularization can itself be conceived as a theological process, the paper critiques a religious/secular dichotomy and argues that individualized spiritualities presently prevalent are indicative of Taylor’s (2007) nova effect of proliferating grounded theologies. Case studies are drawn from social and cultural geographies of religious intersectionalities and from critical geopolitics.

Business Group Attributes And Internationalization Strategy In China, Daphne W. Yiu, Frank W. Ng, Xufei Ma Feb 2013

Business Group Attributes And Internationalization Strategy In China, Daphne W. Yiu, Frank W. Ng, Xufei Ma

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Business groups play a critical role in the internationalization of Chinese firms, but empirical efforts on this topic are limited. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the impacts of group-specific attributes on the pursuit of different internationalization strategies. Our findings from 219 Chinese business group affiliates show that horizontal linkages among group affiliates are more positively related to asset-seeking internationalization, whereas vertical linkages are more positively related to market-seeking internationalization. We contribute to the literature by moving a step forward to examine if business group attributes are leveraged differentially in market-seeking and asset-seeking internationalization strategies.

Structures Of Broken Ties: Exploring Unfollow Behavior On Twitter, Bo Xu, Yun Huang, Haewoon Kwak Feb 2013

Structures Of Broken Ties: Exploring Unfollow Behavior On Twitter, Bo Xu, Yun Huang, Haewoon Kwak

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This study investigates unfollow behavior in Twitter, i.e. people removing others from their Twitter following lists. Considering the interdependency and dynamics of unfollow decisions, we use actor-oriented modeling (SIENA) to examine the impacts of reciprocity, status, embeddedness, homophily, and informativeness on tie dissolution. Focusing on ordinary users in tightly-knitted user groups, the results show that relational properties play key roles in the emergence of unfollow behavior: mutual following relations and common followees reduce the likelihood of unfollowing. And unfollow tends to be reciprocal: when a user is unfollowed by someone, he or she will unfollow back. However, there is no …

Resilience And Change In Federal Institutions: The Case Of The German Federal Council, Kathleen A. Thelen, Sebastian Karcher Jan 2013

Resilience And Change In Federal Institutions: The Case Of The German Federal Council, Kathleen A. Thelen, Sebastian Karcher

Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs

One of the oldest federalist systems, Germany offers itself as a case study for long-term developments in federalism. Drawing on a burgeoning literature on institutional continuity and change we investigate the development of a key institution of German federalism, the Federal Council (Bundesrat) from the foundation of the German Reich until today. Counter to claims that institutional change occurs mainly during “critical junctures,” the Federal Council has shown remarkable resilience: It persisted through World War I and the 1919 revolution and the writing of the centralist Weimar constitution. Dismantled in 1934, it returned in 1949 after years of dictatorship, war, …
