How To Get Rid Of Thunder Thighs, Helena E. Yang Jul 2013

How To Get Rid Of Thunder Thighs, Helena E. Yang

SURGE

I appreciate the insightful and important things your muffin top has to say to me, but my thunder thighs still think they’re fat.

I’m overweight (sometimes).

On a BMI scale, I fluctuate in and out of the dreaded “overweight” category. While I acknowledge that the BMI scale has its flaws, it was designed to be a quick approximation of weight to height; it is not designed to be a scientific test. Sometimes I tell myself I am super muscular and the scale doesn’t apply to me, but it’s actually not true. [excerpt]

Making Room: A Place For Children’S Spirituality In The Christian Church, Heather Ingersoll Jul 2013

Making Room: A Place For Children’S Spirituality In The Christian Church, Heather Ingersoll

SPU Works

A relatively uncharted territory until recently, the concept of children as innate spiritual beings has garnered significant attention among scholars over the past two decades. Seminal studies by researchers provide practitioners with the opportunity to gain a deeper appreciation of the spirituality of children and their ability to seek and contemplate spiritual concepts (Ratcliff, 2007). The more that is learned about children’s spirituality, the more apparent it becomes that the Christian church in the United States generally fails to provide sufficient space for children to explore, develop, and share their spirituality. This potentially leads children to suppress or disconnect from …

Private Agri-Food Standards: Supply Chains And The Governance Of Standards, Elizabeth Ransom, Carmen Bain, Vaughan Higgins

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

The articles in this second special issue of the International Journal of Sociology of Agriculture and Food on private agri-food standards consider key issues involved in the shift from government to governance within agri-food systems. The first special issue, published in February 2013, focused on ‘the contestation, hybridity and the politics of standards’ (Bain et al., 2013, p. 1). The articles in the first issue complicated our understanding of the relationship between public and private standards by examining the politics associated with their formation, implementation, and outcomes. At the same time, the first special issue drew attention to the diversity …

Battle Of The Bains: Tactical Bathing In Two Expository Texts, One Film And A Novella, Leann Marie Lewis Jul 2013

Battle Of The Bains: Tactical Bathing In Two Expository Texts, One Film And A Novella, Leann Marie Lewis

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

In numerous articles and texts published within the arenas of Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies, much has been written on the trope of the shared bath-and even more specifically the hammam-as a space of orientalism. Although researchers such as Magreban sociologist Fatima Mernissi, Algerian writer Malek Alloula, and film scholars Serena Anderlini-DOnofrio and Elisabetta Girelli have offered images of le bain turc in expository texts, art and media, and films as those which offer 'Turkish Dreams' of orientalist fantasy, this paper focuses on the space as a loci of performative strategies and tactical moves, which abet social resistance. I argue …

I Don't Want To Save Your Children, Katherine M. Patterson Jul 2013

I Don't Want To Save Your Children, Katherine M. Patterson

SURGE

A few weeks ago, the moment that I’ve been dreaming of for almost half of a year finally arrived. I started the Heston Summer Experience as an intern in Gettysburg. An embarrassing amount of my winter break was devoted to writing and rewriting my applications. After receiving an invitation for an interview, I convened my roommates to help me choose an outfit and ask me practice questions, which is not something I do…ever. Getting my acceptance letter in the mail was the ultimate highlight of a long and difficult year. When I was home for the first few weeks of …

Marital Satisfaction And Depressive Symptoms In China, Richard B. Miller, Tiffany M. Mason, Jerevie M. Canlas, Dahua Wang, David A. Nelson, Craig H. Hart Jul 2013

Marital Satisfaction And Depressive Symptoms In China, Richard B. Miller, Tiffany M. Mason, Jerevie M. Canlas, Dahua Wang, David A. Nelson, Craig H. Hart

Faculty Publications

Although there is substantial evidence that low marital satisfaction is a significant risk factor for depression, little research has examined this relationship in cultures outside of the U.S. and Europe. The validity of the marital discord model of depression in Chinese culture was tested by studying 391 couples living in Beijing and Hangzhou, China. Results of structural equation modeling using an actor–partner interdependence model strategy indicated that husbands’ and wives’ marital satisfaction was significantly predictive of their own depressive symptoms. In addition, wives’ marital satisfaction significantly predicted husbands’ depressive symptoms. These results provide evidence that the marital discord model of …

The Perceptions Of Community Gardeners At Jones Valley Urban Farm And The Implications For Dietary Interventions, Matthew D. Northrop, Brooks C. Wingo, Jamy D. Ard

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this study was to assess the reasons community gardeners at Jones Valley Urban Farm in Birmingham, Alabama participate in the community garden program, as well as to explore the potential impacts such participation has on the members’ health, community, and diet. Twenty active gardeners participated in four focus groups. Gardeners reported prior experience, cost savings, taste, sustainability issues, and provision of fresh and organic food as reasons for participating. Gardeners also reported issues related to sharing, community development, mental health, personal pride, perceived health benefits, and new - found food variety as impacts of their participation. Finding …

Using Sensemaking As A Diagnostic Tool In The Analysis Of Qualitative Data, Megan Paull, Ian Boudville, Helen Sitlington Jul 2013

Using Sensemaking As A Diagnostic Tool In The Analysis Of Qualitative Data, Megan Paull, Ian Boudville, Helen Sitlington

The Qualitative Report

Analysis of qualitative data is a process which novice researchers must learn as they progress, and which experienced researchers must negotiate and adapt to suit the study they are undertaking and the data they are collected. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how researchers can use sensemaking to diagnose and explain phenomena in ordinary situations, and how it can be added as an analysis and interpretation tool in their toolkit. This paper describes the use of sensemaking employed as a tool for diagnosis of the processes which take place when a manager encounters perceived declining performance in an …

A Guidebook And A Research Model: A Review Of Doing Excellent Small - Scale Research, Michael L. Clancy Jul 2013

A Guidebook And A Research Model: A Review Of Doing Excellent Small - Scale Research, Michael L. Clancy

The Qualitative Report

A guide book and a research model – Doing Excellent Small - Scale Research (Layder, 2013) provides both. First, Professor Layder has written a book that is just what he intended: “an introductory guide” for research students. It provides a process for clearly defining problem and topic questions, advice regarding research designs, methods for data collection and analysis, real - life examples, and a logical sequence tying everything together. Second, the author offers an Adaptive Research Model as a practical approach for conducting social research. This model and this book are recommended (by the reviewer) for research students and teachers, …

Cross-Cultural Design Attitude: Open-Ended Design Solution For Welcoming The Diversity, Elena Enrica Giunta, Agnese Rebaglio Jul 2013

Cross-Cultural Design Attitude: Open-Ended Design Solution For Welcoming The Diversity, Elena Enrica Giunta, Agnese Rebaglio

Learn X Design Conference Series

Italy draws lots of refugees from the Mediterranean regions: in 2010, Milan received more then 850 people in its welcomely Centres. Municipalities, citizens but also professionals must be involved in the collective answer to such a kind of phenomenon. The ephemeral nature of the settlement in the Centres, the precarious conditions of staying, as well as the variety of tenants’ identities (multi-ethnical and gender turns) shape a new research field of great, social, importance which challenges the designer to imagine new strategies and tactics for collective living. These reasons convinced a multi-disciplinary group (designers, social workers and environmental psychologists) to …

Zofia Stryjeńska: Women In The Warsaw Town Square. Our Lady, Peasant Mother, Pagan Goddess, Katelyn Mckenzie Sheffield Jul 2013

Zofia Stryjeńska: Women In The Warsaw Town Square. Our Lady, Peasant Mother, Pagan Goddess, Katelyn Mckenzie Sheffield

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I consider the unique position that Polish artist Zofia Stryjeńska (1891-1974) occupied during the interwar period. Lauded during her time as the most popular artist in Poland, the acceptance of Stryjeńska's female voice in representing a national vocabulary was unprecedented and deserves closer examination. I assert that Poland's history of oppression created a unique environment where women as archetypal figures often took on masculine roles. These 'transgressive types' were visible in the literature and art of the 19th and 20th centuries. Stryjeńska's art, as well as her behavior, capitalized on these transgressive traditions. Women played an important …

Developing Expertise And Connoisseurship Through Handling Objects Of ‘Good Design’: The Example Of The I.L.E.A./Camberwell Collection, Maria Georgaki Jul 2013

Developing Expertise And Connoisseurship Through Handling Objects Of ‘Good Design’: The Example Of The I.L.E.A./Camberwell Collection, Maria Georgaki

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

The paper develops from the study case of the I.L.E.A./Camberwell Collection. The I.L.E.A./Camberwell Collection comprises about 20,000 design and craft objects chosen by the London County Council and the Inner London Education Authority as examples of “good design”. It circulated in London schools between 1951 and 1976. The paper uses the Collection in order to discuss “handling” as a research methodology with particular relevance to expertise and connoisseurship in design history. It provides an overview of how expertise and connoisseurship diverge in their meaning and scope in the discipline of design history as compared to art history and adjacent disciplines, …

Transferring Disability Experience To Design Practice, Ann Heylighen Jul 2013

Transferring Disability Experience To Design Practice, Ann Heylighen

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Through their bodily interaction with the built environment, disabled people can detect obstacles and appreciate spatial qualities architects and other designers may not be attuned to. To some extent, disabled people can thus be considered as connoisseurs: they are able to differentiate and perceive variables in their body or the surrounding world that are meaningless to others. In architectural practice, however, disability experience is rarely considered a valuable source for design: building codes consider accessibility of buildings as something taken care of by professional experts, instead of something people are attached or exposed to, leaving disabled people as seemingly incapable …

The Interplay Between Experiential And Theoretical Knowledge In Service Design, Young-Ae Hahn, Heidi Uppa Jul 2013

The Interplay Between Experiential And Theoretical Knowledge In Service Design, Young-Ae Hahn, Heidi Uppa

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This study explores how a designer’s experiential and theoretical types of knowledge are involved in her research, analysis, and synthesis processes, based on observations made from a cafeteria service design workshop. A designer’s experiential and theoretical types knowledge arise from her interaction with the natural world. While experiential knowledge is acquired from her direct experience with intuitive thinking, theoretical knowledge is a product of her direct-indirect experiences reflected with both intuitive thinking and analytical thinking. Experiential knowledge and theoretical knowledge are two sides of her knowledge as a whole. They are dependent to each other in that experiential knowledge is …

Rendering The Tacit Observable In The Learning Process Of A Changing Body, Peter-Willem Vermeersch, Ann Heylighen Jul 2013

Rendering The Tacit Observable In The Learning Process Of A Changing Body, Peter-Willem Vermeersch, Ann Heylighen

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

To address the visual bias in architectural design, we explore ways to include vision impaired persons in architects’ design process. In this context we studied the development of non-visual experiential knowledge in the process of becoming blind to explore its potential in designing multisensory space. A postphenomenological framework provides us a way of understanding the continuum of different relations between body and world. How we gain knowledge of our world depends on the situation and ranges from more tacit background and embodiment relations to more explicit alterity and hermeneutic relations. By analyzing John Hull’s written accounts of becoming blind, we …

Crafting Expertise, Georgina Palmer, George Torrens Jul 2013

Crafting Expertise, Georgina Palmer, George Torrens

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Throwing as a ceramic process of making is established worldwide in a variety of forms, but essentially the process has changed relatively little through the years; the method of learning the skills (Schön, 1991), from master to student, from expert to novice, is as old as the craft Expertise is defined as “expert skill or knowledge in a particular field” (Oxford English Dictionary Online, 2012), “a high level of skill or knowledge” (Cambridge Dictionaries Online, 2011), or “a special skill or knowledge” (Chambers, 2011). This raises issues of how an expert/high or special skill determined? Is it in the number …

Developing Intuitive Thinking In Designers: Creative Process And Criticism In Tertiary Foundation Studies, Mari Lecanides-Arnott Jul 2013

Developing Intuitive Thinking In Designers: Creative Process And Criticism In Tertiary Foundation Studies, Mari Lecanides-Arnott

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

Self-awareness and confidence have been identified as necessary attributes for “design thinking” and “creative design action”. In order to communicate within a global “networked knowledge society”, designers need to possess breadth and depth of knowledge, skills and understanding that can be adapted for use in different situations. In design, outcomes are purpose driven and practical, and as the complex field of design bridges art and science, it is argued that “designers create culture”, and as such theory and practice should be integrated. Gaining knowledge of the visual language of art and design, and a critical awareness of “core ideas” in …

Global Creativity: Intercultural ‘Hands-On’ Workshops For Pre-Service Primary Art Teachers, Bronwen Wade-Leeuwen Jul 2013

Global Creativity: Intercultural ‘Hands-On’ Workshops For Pre-Service Primary Art Teachers, Bronwen Wade-Leeuwen

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This seminal paper is presented against the background of a “hands-off” approach to teaching visual arts in most of the Western world where visual arts education is often considered by the school community as peripheral to the real “mission” of education. Most scholars agree that the role of pre-service teachers in the twenty-first century is to develop creative thinking and action in children. However limited research has been conducted into this area of study. The basic aim of this study is to use arts-based research inquiry to investigate Australian primary pre-service teachers' situated knowledge, experiences, and implicit theories using empirical …

Climate Regulation As If The Planet Matters: The Earth Jurisprudence Approach To Climate Change, Glenn Wright Jul 2013

Climate Regulation As If The Planet Matters: The Earth Jurisprudence Approach To Climate Change, Glenn Wright

Environmental and Earth Law Journal (EELJ)

It is now beyond doubt that humans are having an enormously detrimental impact on the natural world. In the face of the incredible environmental challenges we face, new and radical ideas have emerged about how we should regulate human behavior. This paper briefly focuses on the failure of current legal regimes to address climate change, and considers how climate governance would look under the Earth Jurisprudence approach: setting our laws within the context of fundamental principles of ecology and planetary boundaries. Consideration is given to how existing legal concepts could be used to achieve this vision. The paper concludes that …

Mapping The Terrain Of Earth Jurisprudence: Landscape, Thresholds And Horizons, Anne Louise Schillmoller, Alessandro Pelizzon Jul 2013

Mapping The Terrain Of Earth Jurisprudence: Landscape, Thresholds And Horizons, Anne Louise Schillmoller, Alessandro Pelizzon

Environmental and Earth Law Journal (EELJ)

This paper investigates central ideas in the emergent field of Earth Jurisprudence. It suggests that development of conceptual and practical frameworks for an earth justice system predicated on rights of nature is currently at a nascent stage, but such ‘creative uncertainty’ provides scholars and practitioners with opportunities to identify and articulate new conceptual frameworks which avoid some of the hazards of human exceptionalism.

Part I suggests that the concept of ‘rights of nature’ rests upon contestable epistemological and ontological claims and that an effective Earth Jurisprudence will require a continual negotiation of interpretative disagreements and frameworks for action.

Part II …
