Summer Of Shrew, Part 4: Which End’S Up?, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner Jul 2013

Summer Of Shrew, Part 4: Which End’S Up?, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner

Faculty Publications

In the last of a four-part series on Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, Daniel Pollack-Pelzner explores how expanding the range of the titular Shrew to include male characters is actually a return to its original meaning. Pollack-Pelzner focuses on a long-forgotten Renaissance sequel to Shrew (John Fletcher's The Tamer Tamed) that takes the taming of men even further and turns its gender roles upside down.

Treatment Of The Mentally Ill In The Pre-Moral And Moral Era: A Brief Report, Michael A. Carron, Hanna Saad Jul 2013

Treatment Of The Mentally Ill In The Pre-Moral And Moral Era: A Brief Report, Michael A. Carron, Hanna Saad

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Throughout the ages, treatment of the mentally ill has evolved with distinct periods of progression, stagnation and regression. These differences in time mirrored how society understood mental illness and the mentally ill person on both a biological and interpersonal level. At various points in history, treatment of the mentally ill included cruel and inhumane acts, while at other times, consisted of compassionate and benevolent care. What follows is a brief comparison of how mental illness was conceptualized and how persons with mental illness were treated in the pre-moral and moral eras of medicine. The pre-moral era is from the end …

Design Values, Designing Values And Valuing Designing: Three Scenarios For Values In Design Education, Gabriel Hernández Jul 2013

Design Values, Designing Values And Valuing Designing: Three Scenarios For Values In Design Education, Gabriel Hernández

Learn X Design Conference Series

This paper discusses the importance and role of values in design education. As design scenarios constantly change, so do values pertaining to design. Design education should be ahead of those changes, however the theoretical development of design has not given values the same importance as other issues. This paper presents a theoretical framework to help understand the role of values in current design learning. It provides a general comprehension of how values affect both designing and design outcomes, thus aiming to offer arguments that strengthen the awareness and importance of ethical and moral issues in design education.

Learning To Adapt: Online Social Science Instruction In Higher Education, Patrick Steven Smith Jul 2013

Learning To Adapt: Online Social Science Instruction In Higher Education, Patrick Steven Smith

Dissertations and Theses

Online learning is a rapidly growing phenomenon in post-secondary education. Institutions of higher learning have embraced online learning for its perceived merits, but without the consideration of how instructors deal with this different learning medium. Little is known of the extent to which different disciplines are suited to the online medium; this is pertinent to disciplines that rely on spontaneous in-person discussion. Furthermore, as colleges continue to invest heavily in online learning, instructors who only possess face-to-face teaching experience may begin teaching online. This poses a pedagogical challenge for instructors who are unfamiliar with the medium. This qualitative, in-depth interview …

Legal Tails: Policing American Cities Through Animals, Irus Braverman

Contributions to Books

Published as Chapter 8 in Policing Cities: Urban Securitization and Regulation in a 21st Century World, Randy K. Lippert & Kevin Walby, eds.

“I don’t worry about the four-legged animals,” Officer Armatys tells me as I scramble to catch up when he enters a backyard with a fierce-looking dog. “It’s the two-legged animals I am concerned about.” I interviewed Officer Armatys twice, first in his office in the Erie County’s Society for the Protection of Animals (ESPCA) and, a few months later, on a ride-along during a routine workday. Based on these encounters and numerous others with members of the …

From Slurs To Science, Racism To Revisionism: White Nationalist Rhetors And Legitimation In The Stormfront Community, Claire Davies Rhodes Jul 2013

From Slurs To Science, Racism To Revisionism: White Nationalist Rhetors And Legitimation In The Stormfront Community, Claire Davies Rhodes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

While on the surface mainstream discussions about race appear to encompass the values and ideologies associated with egalitarianism, subtle and at times not so subtle discussions continue to disparage groups and individuals who have been historically associated with the minority. The growing existence of hate groups illustrates that arguments for these extreme ideologies are not only present but for some individuals are gaining in acceptance. For this reason, I perform a critical discourse analysis of the language of one of the most popular and prolific White Nationalist groups on the Internet, Stormfront. In particular, I examine how scientific and revisionist …

The Negotiation Of Discourses For Women Who Have Emigrated From India To The United States, Suzanne Christine Schmidle Jul 2013

The Negotiation Of Discourses For Women Who Have Emigrated From India To The United States, Suzanne Christine Schmidle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

When an individual experiences a change in location and enters an unfamiliar space or place, there is often a period of adjustment that occurs due to differences in the two environments. Some of these differences may be immediately obvious to the individual upon their transition, however many times, the differences are not obvious to the eye or even to the mind. This is due to the role of discursive expectations, which are “taken for granted” truths that are engrained in and disciplined through discourses embedded in areas of society such as culture, ethnicity, and religion. Upon entering the new space …

Ernest Everett Just, Phd: Pioneer In Ecological Developmental (Eco-Devo) Biology, Katelyn M. Williams, Bryan A. Wilson, Wendi G. O'Connor, Monte S. Willis

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Ernest Everett Just, a pioneering American biologist, discovered the fundamental role of the environment in the development of embryos. His work led to the creation of the area of biology known as ecological developmental (Eco-Devo) biology. However, both his work and the context of his scientific contributions are not widely known. His work covered a diversity of fields of biology, including marine biology, cytology, and parthogenesis (asexual reproduction where growth and development of embryos occur without fertilization). His findings provided important concepts in developmental biology that are used to this day. Specifically, he demonstrated the importance of the cellular cytoplasm …

Engineering Design Research: Successful Integration Of Education, Practice, And Study In The Cedar Group, Joshua D. Summers Jul 2013

Engineering Design Research: Successful Integration Of Education, Practice, And Study In The Cedar Group, Joshua D. Summers

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Engineering design is a generally nascent area of research within the engineering disciplines, spanning only a few decades of critical investigation. Clemson University has been at the forefront of the development of this field and continues this with a living experiment in how to integrate education, practice, and research through the CEDAR group. This essay introduces the reader to design research and the areas of study within CEDAR. Following this, an analysis of the research trends exposes three pillars of CEDAR philosophy: helping others, seeking variety, and learning from others. The goal of this essay is to introduce the wider …

Boxed In: The Lack Of Creative Thinking In Engineering Students, Rachel Wilbur Jul 2013

Boxed In: The Lack Of Creative Thinking In Engineering Students, Rachel Wilbur

UROP Posters

The lack of creativity coming from recently graduated engineering students seems to be apparent through my observations of students, standard social stigma, as well as research conducted at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. However, little is known about the reason behind this vastly growing problem. Without a better understanding of the issues, universities will continue to produce engineers lacking innovative abilities and creative motivation. Seven scholarly articles and studies as well as three primary sources were reviewed and analyzed in order to better understand what difficulties universities face within the engineering community. It has come to my realization that not …

Obtained By One's Own Hands: A Theory On The Middle Class Of Ancient Egypt And Funerary Stelae Of The First Intermediate Period, Christopher Walter Stelter Jul 2013

Obtained By One's Own Hands: A Theory On The Middle Class Of Ancient Egypt And Funerary Stelae Of The First Intermediate Period, Christopher Walter Stelter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis is an exercise in applying classic and contemporary anthropological class theory to an ancient Egyptian context. The primary goal of this study is to argue for the emergence of a middle class during the First Intermediate Period (2118 - 1980 BC). The rise and fall of the Second Style in relief carvings found on funerary stelae will be related to the emergence of this class. As the class emerged, it took for itself this artistic style as one of its defining characteristics. By its conclusion, this thesis will have proved that a middle class did indeed arise during …

African American Muslim Women: Navigating Racial And Religious Identities, Margaret Ann Parrish Jul 2013

African American Muslim Women: Navigating Racial And Religious Identities, Margaret Ann Parrish

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Since the events of 9/11, a large amount of scholarship has been dedicated to uncovering information regarding the experiences of foreign Muslims living in the United States, while very little attention has been paid to the experiences of African American Muslims. This study seeks to remedy that gap by focusing on the experiences of African American Muslim women who wear a hijab throughout their day-to-day lives. Four women were chosen for this study and interview questions were developed with a specific focus on how they navigate both their religious and racial identities on a daily basis. Beginning research from the …

Navigating The Path Toward Graduation: A Qualitative Case Study Of African American Male Persistence At A Predominantly White Institution, Lamont D. Simmons

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

While higher education personnel continue to be challenged in fostering student persistence, they are especially perplexed with how to promote higher persistence and retention rates among African American men. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand how African American male undergraduate students persist at a predominantly white institution. Interactionalist Theory and the Conceptual Model of Black Student Attrition were helpful in framing this study.Semi-structured interviews were conducted to understand how 11 African American men persist in higher education. The critical incident technique was use to learn about obstacles these men encounter in their educational paths. Data analysis …

Life Post 9/11: Experiences Of Korean Americans Ten Years Later, Jay Lee

Dissertations and Theses

This is one of the first qualitative studies to investigate experiences of Korean-American Christians living in New York City at the time of 9/11. This study sought to gain an understanding of how a group of Second Generation Korean-American Christians living in New York City at the time of the 9/11 attacks experienced that event and the event's impact on their religious beliefs. The study also investigated the communication context at the time of the ten year anniversary of the event, September 11th, 2011. The guiding research questions were: RQ1) What were their life experiences of 9/11? RQ2) Was their …

Does My Hair Bother You? Part 2, Adrienne M. Ellis Jul 2013

Does My Hair Bother You? Part 2, Adrienne M. Ellis

SURGE

I stopped shaving my legs in May. The decision to quit shaving was part social experiment, but a lot of it had to do with NOT HAVING TO SHAVE MY LEGS ANYMORE.

Honestly I didn’t make the decision to stop shaving my leg hair as some sort of feminist statement. I really just found it stupid how society pressures women to have smooth “sexy” legs. How did this pressure begin? Historically women didn’t shave their legs or underarms in the United States; however, hair removal was a common cultural practice in many other parts of the world such as …

Health Disparities As We Age: A Life Course Comparison Of Canadian Early Boomers With Pre-Boomers, Susan Mcdaniel, Amber Gazso, Hugh Mccague, Ryan Barnhart Jul 2013

Health Disparities As We Age: A Life Course Comparison Of Canadian Early Boomers With Pre-Boomers, Susan Mcdaniel, Amber Gazso, Hugh Mccague, Ryan Barnhart

Population Change and Lifecourse Strategic Knowledge Cluster Discussion Paper Series/ Un Réseau stratégique de connaissances Changements de population et parcours de vie Document de travail

Despite a large and growing research literature documenting health disparities by socio-economic status (SES) and income inequalities, research on how these relationships play out moving from mid to later life is meager. Even less is known about how the early Baby Boom cohort compares with the Pre-Boomer cohort as they age in a period of accelerating inequalities, where the wealthy are becoming wealthier and the incomes of those in the middle and at the bottom are stagnating. In this paper, we follow individuals in two cohorts, those born 1947-1951 and those born 1932-36 over the period covering eight cycles of …

The Respectability Trap: Gender Conventions In 20th Century Movements For Social Change, Georgina Hickey Jul 2013

The Respectability Trap: Gender Conventions In 20th Century Movements For Social Change, Georgina Hickey

Journal of Interdisciplinary Feminist Thought

An analysis of how a variety of women in 19th and 20th century movements for social change in the United States negotiated normative gender expectations in both their activism and their personal lives. While challenging norms or using traditional norms as a part of a movement tactic are both common in social movements, women leaders still sometimes found themselves in a ‘respectability trap’ when they reflexively applied the dictates of respectable behavior. In these moments, the often invisible privileges attached to the social recognition of a woman’s respectability – and implied morality – become visible. Women who eschewed traditional norms …

Stray Dogs Cause Health Risks In Thailand, Kadie Brigham

UROP Posters

Around 120,000 stray dogs are currently roaming the streets of Thailand compared to the 67,000,000 people that currently live there. Although the stray dog population doesn't outnumber the human population, it still should be a concern of the Thai government because stray dogs have shown aggression towards people and, carry diseases and rabies that could be transferred to people causing them serious ailments. Chantapong Wasi and colleagues from the Medicine Siriraj Hospital at Mahidol Universty in Thailand estimate that within the stray dog population only about 20% of the dogs are vaccinated or sterilized. My research explores what type of …
