Personal Inner Values – A Key To Effective Face-To-Face Business Communication, Chris A. Manning, Mark R. Waldman, William E. Lindsey, Andrew B. Newberg, Dorianne Cotter-Lockard Jul 2013

Personal Inner Values – A Key To Effective Face-To-Face Business Communication, Chris A. Manning, Mark R. Waldman, William E. Lindsey, Andrew B. Newberg, Dorianne Cotter-Lockard

Journal of Executive Education

Effective face-to-face oral communication is crucial for organizational performance. Managers must communicate effectively with their subordinates, their peers and superiors to link organizational direction to those at all levels of the organization. In addition, face-to-face oral communications are fundamental to the messaging process between business entities, whether a person is acting for oneself or representing his/her company. Face-to-face oral communication that builds empathic trust and mutual confidence is essential in business, especially in light of the recent “crisis in trust” caused by the 2008 financial market “meltdown” and the widely publicized ethical failures in business that have occurred in the …

Comparing Teen Substance Use In Northern New Hampshire To Rural Use Nationwide, Karen T. Van Gundy Jul 2013

Comparing Teen Substance Use In Northern New Hampshire To Rural Use Nationwide, Karen T. Van Gundy

Carsey Publications

Using data administered in 2011 from the Carsey Institute’s Coös Youth Study and the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, this brief compares teen substance use patterns in New Hampshire’s most rural county to patterns among rural youth nationwide. Author Karen Van Gundy reports that about half of the teens in Coös County and in rural areas nationwide reported using any substance in the previous year. Alcohol use was reported most often, followed by tobacco or marijuana, and other illicit substances. Rural boys nationwide reported using tobacco at significantly higher rates than Coös boys and girls and rural girls …

The View From The Table: An Analysis Of Participant Reactions To Community-Based Dialogues On Food And Justice, Jennifer Turner Jul 2013

The View From The Table: An Analysis Of Participant Reactions To Community-Based Dialogues On Food And Justice, Jennifer Turner

Dissertations and Theses

While Portland, Oregon's sustainable food movement wins accolades for explicitly situating itself in opposition to the industrialized global food system, it often fails to address systems of oppression that are reproduced within the alternative agri-food movement itself. This demonstrated aversion towards the messy, complex, contingent nature of the social world reflects larger processes of "de-politicization" of the overall sustainability agenda, which leads to the favoring of technological and/or spatial solutions that may undermine the social equity and justice dimensions of the "triple bottom line." This thesis focuses on an action research project involving a series of community dialogues that provided …

Owning Up To The Age Old Excuse, Emily G. Hauck Jul 2013

Owning Up To The Age Old Excuse, Emily G. Hauck

SURGE

A few days ago, I was having a conversation with an older gentleman. He was friendly and very interested in my studies, but every now and then he would interject some racist slur or joke. He insistently referred to undocumented individuals as illegals because, according to him, “that’s exactly what they are.” He also made a few comments about Aryan dominance yet claimed that he wasn’t racist because he discriminates against all non-Aryans equally. The man clearly expected me to laugh along with him, especially with those last remarks, as if it were completely normal to utter them in an …

Bracketing In Phenomenology: Only Undertaken In The Data Collection And Analysis Process, Zenobia C.Y. Chan, Yuen-Ling Fung, Wai-Tong Chien Jul 2013

Bracketing In Phenomenology: Only Undertaken In The Data Collection And Analysis Process, Zenobia C.Y. Chan, Yuen-Ling Fung, Wai-Tong Chien

The Qualitative Report

Our aim with this article is to demonstrate how the researchers use bracketing as a method of demonstrating the validity after initiating a phenomenological study. Although bracketing is a method of demonstrating the validity of the da ta collection and analysis process in most phenomenological studies, how the researchers use them in practice is rarely demonstrated explicitly. We collected data through our experiences in preparing a phenomenological research study. We suggest that the concept of bracketing should be adopted upon initiating the research proposal and not merely in the data collection and analysis process. We propose four strategies for doing …

Grumpy Old Ethnographers: A Review Of David Silverman ’S A Very Short, Fairly Interesting And Reasonably Cheap Book About Qualitative Research, Rachel Fang Jul 2013

Grumpy Old Ethnographers: A Review Of David Silverman ’S A Very Short, Fairly Interesting And Reasonably Cheap Book About Qualitative Research, Rachel Fang

The Qualitative Report

Renowned scholar of qualitative research methods David Silverman delivers an indictment of contemporary qualitative research methods. The book is meant to be an introduction (or “pre - textbook”) to the subject of qualitative research and definitely not a “how - to” manual. In evaluating contemporary qualitative research methods, Silverman’s book primarily focuses on ethnography and conversation analysis. Intentionally personal and biased, Silverman’s plainly - stated goal for this book is to “debunk the accepted understandings” of qualitative research and elicit an interest in the arguments within the field of qualitative inquiry , and he succeeds on both accounts .

Diagrammatic Elicitation: Defining The Use Of Diagrams In Data Collection, Muriah Umoquit, Peggy Tso, Tünde Varga-Atkins, Mark O'Brien, Johannes Wheeldon Jul 2013

Diagrammatic Elicitation: Defining The Use Of Diagrams In Data Collection, Muriah Umoquit, Peggy Tso, Tünde Varga-Atkins, Mark O'Brien, Johannes Wheeldon

The Qualitative Report

The use of graphic representations of experience and the social environment in the data collection process is an emerging approach. The terms diagramming, mapping and drawing are often used interchangeably, with no common interdisciplinary understanding of what they mean. The lack of a unifying terminology has resulted in simultaneous but separate developments undermining a more coherent approach to this emergent method. By defining what a diagram is and examining where diagramming fits amongst other data collection approaches, this paper proposes the term diagrammatic elicitation to refer to the use of diagrams in the data collection process. Two subcategories of this …

Learning The Ropes: The Role Of Peers, Mentors, And Extracurricular Participation In College Persistence, Adriene Davis Jul 2013

Learning The Ropes: The Role Of Peers, Mentors, And Extracurricular Participation In College Persistence, Adriene Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Although college attendance rates continue to rise in the United States during the 21st century, college completion percentages still lag behind. This put those not able to persist through higher education at a disadvantage, particularly because of the financial and opportunity costs of attending college without successful completion. Using data collected from 20 semi-structured interviews, I examine how social support helps students navigate and succeed during college. From the data I find that the various social relationships students cultivate in college with peers, upperclassmen and college-educated family members, as well as through involvement in on-campus groups and organizations can provide …

Appearance-Based Predictors Of Suicidal Behavior, Cynthia Anne Stockton Jul 2013

Appearance-Based Predictors Of Suicidal Behavior, Cynthia Anne Stockton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The objectives of this study are to determine the effects of weight, weight perception, and physical attractiveness on suicide ideation among adolescents and adults. Further, this research aims to determine whether this effect differs by gender and race. This study employs the public-use version of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, Waves I through IV (N=6,504). Odds ratios are estimated to determine whether actual or perceived weight is a better predictor of suicide ideation, and whether measures of interviewer-rated attractiveness or self-rated attractiveness predict suicide ideation. Analyses reveal that perception of self is the most important predictor of suicide ideation. …

An Examination Of Equilibria In The Multi-Site Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma, George A. Mcclain Jul 2013

An Examination Of Equilibria In The Multi-Site Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma, George A. Mcclain

Theses

Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma is a simple model for the interaction between two self-interested agents who can choose whether or not to cooperate with one another. Many real-world problems can be characterized in terms of the Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma, from the militarization of rival nations to the tradeoff between gas mileage and safety when purchasing a vehicle. The game theoretic properties of Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma are well understood, and previous research by Robert Axelrod into the performance of various strategies in a Darwinian environment is extensive. In this paper we extend Axelrod's work by investigating the dynamics of the Iterated Prisoner's …

Remembering Madrid: Urban Space And Memory From The Spanish Civil War To The Transition To Democracy, Enrique Tellez Espiga Jul 2013

Remembering Madrid: Urban Space And Memory From The Spanish Civil War To The Transition To Democracy, Enrique Tellez Espiga

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation examines the relationship between memory and urban studies by emphasizing the importance of urban space and its experience in the (re)construction of collective memories of the Spanish Civil War, Francoism, and the Transition to democracy. Urban and memory studies have been relatively disconnected fields in Spanish Peninsular cultural studies so far. This study proposes that merging urban and memory studies allows for an innovative conceptualization of the importance that urban space and its experience plays in the formation and preservation of collective memories. Central to this analysis is the term of “mnemonic collective map,” a concept that I …

Secondary Education Teacher Preparation Programs Should Differentiate Curriculum And Instruction For Traditional And Nontraditional Preservice Teachers, Cynthia Jane Schairer-Kessler Jul 2013

Secondary Education Teacher Preparation Programs Should Differentiate Curriculum And Instruction For Traditional And Nontraditional Preservice Teachers, Cynthia Jane Schairer-Kessler

Theses and Dissertations

Much demand remains for teacher education programs to produce highly qualified teachers. Current trends show that almost half of today's preservice teachers are considered nontraditional in terms of age and life experience. The purpose of this study was to determine whether secondary education teacher preparation programs should differentiate curriculum and instruction for traditional and nontraditional preservice teachers. Research questions incorporated four variables of professional demeanor, teaching and learning, interpersonal skills, and time management. Data was collected through a presurvey at the beginning of the student teaching semester and a postsurvey at the end of the semester, as well as an …

Arctic Warming And Your Weather: Public Belief In The Connection, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Mary D. Lemcke-Stampone Jul 2013

Arctic Warming And Your Weather: Public Belief In The Connection, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Mary D. Lemcke-Stampone

Sociology

Will Arctic warming affect mid-latitude weather? Many researchers think so, and have addressed this question through scientific articles and news media. Much of the public accepts such a connection as well. Across three New Hampshire surveys with more than 1500 interviews, 60% of respondents say they think future Arctic warming would have major effects on their weather. Arctic/weather responses changed little after Superstorm Sandy brushed the region, but exhibit consistently strong partisan divisions that grow wider with education. Belief in an Arctic/weather connection also varies, in a nonlinear pattern, with the temperature anomaly around day of interview. Interviewed on unseasonably …

Code-Switching In The Classroom: Teaching The Neutral American Dialect To The 21st Century Student, Hollis Louise Casini Jul 2013

Code-Switching In The Classroom: Teaching The Neutral American Dialect To The 21st Century Student, Hollis Louise Casini

Theses and Dissertations

Language is a personal process, a product of not only our development, but of one’s culture. Yet in the United States, an actor must be able to speak without a detectable dialect to be competitive in the entertainment world. How can voice teachers in a multi-cultural society, train students with more attention to the individuality of the students we educate? In this thesis, I present the information I have found important in my development as a voice teacher that has influenced my approach to training actors to use the Neutral American dialect. I begin by outlining human language acquisition and …

Understanding Body Image Differences Between African American And White Women, Dominique Latrice Watson Jul 2013

Understanding Body Image Differences Between African American And White Women, Dominique Latrice Watson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Recent empirical studies have examined sociocultural factors that affec women's development of body dissatisfaction including the roles of media, peer influence, and racial/cultural standards. This study examines the influence of racial socialization, mass media, and peers in influencing African American and white women's body dissatisfaction. Specifically, focus groups are used from a sample of 25 African American and white college students between the ages of 18 and 22. This study draws on a social comparison theoretical framework which argues that individuals evaluate their self-concept based on their ideas, values, and attitudes similar to them. This study finds that African American …

Which Way Is Up? Space And Place In Virtual Learning Environments For Design, Derek Jones, Peter Lloyd Jul 2013

Which Way Is Up? Space And Place In Virtual Learning Environments For Design, Derek Jones, Peter Lloyd

Learn X Design Conference Series

The role of ‘place’ in design education is essential in providing a structured learning experience that can be trusted and which allows dynamic social connections to emerge in the development of reflective practice. With increasing demand for distance and online learning resources, this paper considers how such a sense of place can be arrived at using ‘virtual architecture’. Analogies with physical architectural space – for example ‘homes’, ‘forums’, ‘studios’, ‘libraries’ can be useful, but in many ways the opportunities for design learning in virtual architecture go far beyond what is possible with physical architecture. We describe how the virtual architecture …

Of Monsters And Men: A Comparison Of Greek And Norse Mythology In The Western Canon, Amber Morrow Jul 2013

Of Monsters And Men: A Comparison Of Greek And Norse Mythology In The Western Canon, Amber Morrow

UROP Posters

Greek literature has long been considered the most valuable to Western culture, and it has been held up through the ages as a literary exemplar. While the western literary canon has often been revised and added to, we have never truly questioned the place of Greek mythology in it, nor have we considered that other mythologies, particularly Norse, may deserve a place in our canon alongside their Greek peers. Although we must acknowledge the merit of Greek mythology and the vast influence it has had on literature and art, this does not necessarily mean that Norse mythology and its peers …

On The Paradigm Transformation Of Literary Studies: From Literature To Literariness, Hanguang Ma Jul 2013

On The Paradigm Transformation Of Literary Studies: From Literature To Literariness, Hanguang Ma

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The ideas of modern literature from Madame de Stael to Matthew Arnold inherit the form of traditional literature which approaches literature from the perspective of the modes and outcomes of the subject's activities on the basis of the theory of subjectivity. Thus what they revealed through literature studies is not the truth of literature itself but the subject itself i.e. how the subject forms through literary activities. The Russian formalists put forward the concept of literariness which defined the object of literature as literariness of the works. The changing literary study modes makes the discussion on literature studies transfer from the grand …
