Helping Willing Hands: Educating Single Mothers To Create Skills-Based Resumes, Kiel Willmore, Dr. Maureen Rice Aug 2013

Helping Willing Hands: Educating Single Mothers To Create Skills-Based Resumes, Kiel Willmore, Dr. Maureen Rice

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I had two main objectives for my creative project when I received an ORCA grant earlier this year. First, the project was aimed towards helping local single mothers, who not having the chance to obtain a secondary education, create skills-based resumes rather than education or experience-based resumes in order to help them obtain greater career options. I was hoping that by providing such service, it would not only help lift the community around us, but that it would bless the lives of single mothers’ families and help bolster them towards more fruitful careers.

Using Metaphor Analysis: Mip And Beyond, Rod Pitcher Aug 2013

Using Metaphor Analysis: Mip And Beyond, Rod Pitcher

The Qualitative Report

Metaphor analysis is a way of obtaining understanding of a text by identifying and analysing the metaphors used in it. Metaphor analysis, as usually described, uses the researcher’s intuition as a means of identifying the metaphors. MIP, the Metaphor Identification Procedure, uses a more valid and repeatable way of finding the metaphors. MIP may be applied in a way that will produce a quantitative or qualitative result. As a result, the application of MIP links quantitative and qualitative research and their results through one method of identifying the metaphors.

Assessment Of Rigour In Published Nursing Intervention Studies That Use Observational Methods, Esther Coker, Jenny Ploeg, Sharon Kaasalainen, Anita Fisher Aug 2013

Assessment Of Rigour In Published Nursing Intervention Studies That Use Observational Methods, Esther Coker, Jenny Ploeg, Sharon Kaasalainen, Anita Fisher

The Qualitative Report

Unstructured observation involving “going into the field” to describe and analyze what is seen and heard, may be an underutilized method in nursing research. The role of the observer, the nature of the observations, data sources, systematic recording and analysis of observations, appropriate analysis of the data, and corroboration of findings are important considerations when ensuring rigour in observational methods. However, the description of observational techniques and methods provided in published accounts of qualitative research is sparse, and it is therefore difficult to evaluate the truthfulness, credibility, and trustworthiness of many research studies. Observational methods can address discrepancies between what …

Feel The Fear: Learning Graphic Design In Affective Places And Online Spaces, Anitra Nottingham Aug 2013

Feel The Fear: Learning Graphic Design In Affective Places And Online Spaces, Anitra Nottingham

Learn X Design Conference Series

This paper explores the idea of pedagogic affect in both onsite and online graphic design learning spaces, and speculates on the role that this affect plays in the formation of the design student. I argue that embodied design knowledge is built by interactions with design professionals, activities that mimic the daily work of designers, and practices of display such as student work galleries within design schools. Therefore bodies in motion, and the places they move within, take on more importance in the making-up of a graphic design student than we may expect. This idea has implications for online design learning. …

Health And Social Problems Associated With Prescription Opioid Misuse Among A Diverse Sample Of Substance-Using Msm, Mance E. Buttram, Steven P. Kurtz, Hilary L. Surratt, Maria A. Levi-Minzi

CAHSS Faculty Articles

This study examines associations between prescription opioid misuse and demographics, substance use, sexual behavior, and related health and social problems. Baseline data were collected between 2008 and 2010 from 515 high risk men who have sex with men, ages 18–55, in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale metropolitan area who reported heavy substance use and HIV risk in the past 90 days. Prescription opioid misuse was associated with other substance use, drug injection, substance dependence, and history of arrest. Implications, limitations, and directions for future study are discussed.

Do Grandparents Matter? The Relationship Between Emotional Closeness And Adolescent Prosocial Behavior, Jami Jackson, Dr. Jeremy Yorgason Aug 2013

Do Grandparents Matter? The Relationship Between Emotional Closeness And Adolescent Prosocial Behavior, Jami Jackson, Dr. Jeremy Yorgason

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Grandparental emotional closeness is important for both grandparents and grandchildren (e.g. Bowers & Myers, 1999; Drew & Silverstein, 2007; Crosnoe & Elder, 2002). However, in many of the studies given, the measure of intergenerational closeness has come from the grandparent (e.g. Fingerman, 2004; Drew & Silverstein, 2007). In cases where the measure has come from the perspective of the grandchild, much of the data have been collected from college‐aged young adults (Dubas, 2001; Harwood, 2001). The purpose of this study is to measure adolescents’ reports of emotional closeness to a grandparent, and to study the relationship between grandparental closeness and …

On The Inevitability Of Divided Government And Improbability Of A Complete Separation Of Powers, Rodger D. Congleton Aug 2013

On The Inevitability Of Divided Government And Improbability Of A Complete Separation Of Powers, Rodger D. Congleton

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

This paper provides a tightly written overview and modest extension of the constitutional exchange and evolution model developed in Perfecting Parliament and uses that approach to analyze the division of authority that one would expect to see in contemporary constitutional governments. The analysis suggests that constitutions tend to be written, based on the king and council template, and buttressed by a more or less independent court system. Moreover, it suggests that constitutions change at the margin through time as constitutional bargaining takes place. This suggests that a complete separation of power is unlikely to be observed in the long run. …

Pornography Use In Non-Clinical Couples: Basic Frequencies From The Flourishing Families Project, Stephanie Blickfeldt, Dr. Randal D. Day Aug 2013

Pornography Use In Non-Clinical Couples: Basic Frequencies From The Flourishing Families Project, Stephanie Blickfeldt, Dr. Randal D. Day

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Purpose Pundits, popular press, political groups, and religious organizations make the claim that the current rate of pornography use is a determinant to society and individuals in family life (Kretchmer & Carveth, 2001). Due to the concerns expressed by such figures and my own personal concerns with the seemingly increasing rates of pornography use through the internet, my professor and I found it important to explore its actual presence. Through this venture, I was personally responsible for completing an extensive review of literature to discover what past social science research has contributed to this subject.

Over The Individualism Wall: Creating An Ubuntu Community At Immaculate Conception Catholic Parish, Jordan Layton, Dr. Jeremy Grimshaw Aug 2013

Over The Individualism Wall: Creating An Ubuntu Community At Immaculate Conception Catholic Parish, Jordan Layton, Dr. Jeremy Grimshaw

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As I near my host family’s neighborhood, the streets become constraining tunnels. Lining the curbs are wall after wall of concrete above my head, topped with razor wires, electric lines, or metal spikes. The only breaks to the walled monotony are tall, jail-like gates. Shutting the automatic gate behind me instills the intentional impression of exclusion from the outside. Privacy and security of walled homes is increasingly sought after, even in townships where resistance to apartheid once forged strong communal unity. Here, such walls are also signs of community rejection. Both anthropologists and politicians have noted a decline in sense …

The Wired Generation: Academic And Social Outcomes, Wade Jacobsen, Dr. Renata Forste Aug 2013

The Wired Generation: Academic And Social Outcomes, Wade Jacobsen, Dr. Renata Forste

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Electronic media (EM) include social networking sites (SNS), instant messaging (IM), text messaging, email, television and movies, and video and online games. Though the use of these devices has recently exploded among college students, little research has been conducted to explore the influence they have on academic performance and face to face social interaction. We addressed this gap in the literature using survey research methods. First, we constructed an internet survey using Qualtrics online survey software. We distributed the survey, including a short questionnaire and three day time log, to all entry level and transfer students in their first year …

Are We Making A Difference? The Effects Of Club Membership On Youth Attitudes And Behavior, Collin Flake, Dr. Renata Forste Aug 2013

Are We Making A Difference? The Effects Of Club Membership On Youth Attitudes And Behavior, Collin Flake, Dr. Renata Forste

Journal of Undergraduate Research

After several discussions with my faculty mentor and a thorough review of the existing research, I set out to examine the effectiveness of after school programs in Utah, specifically the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Greater Salt Lake area. The purpose of my research is twofold. The first is to identify the complex behavioral, academic, and mental and physical health issues that challenge youth from disadvantaged backgrounds. The second is to evaluate the effectiveness of current community programs in addressing these issues.

Ambivalent Sexism And The Law: The Myth Of Gender Equality, Jennifer Edgley, Dr. Niwako Yamawaki Aug 2013

Ambivalent Sexism And The Law: The Myth Of Gender Equality, Jennifer Edgley, Dr. Niwako Yamawaki

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The women’s liberation movement of the sixties and seventies has ushered in several important social and political changes in the United States. Gender inequality, however, remains an enduring problem in various institutions (Lips, 2007). The theory of Ambivalent Sexism conceptualizes and may be the key to understanding the residual occurrences of gender inequality within social institutions. Theorists Glick and Fiske (1996) believe that prejudice, though traditionally considered to be antipathy towards a certain group (Allport, 1954), can contain both positive and negative features. They contend that sexism is not simply hostility towards women, but also subjectively positive behavior toward women. …

Collateral Consequences: The Impact Of State-Level Policies On Perceived Stigma And Stigma Coping Strategies Among Ex-Offenders, Bronwyn Anne Hunter Aug 2013

Collateral Consequences: The Impact Of State-Level Policies On Perceived Stigma And Stigma Coping Strategies Among Ex-Offenders, Bronwyn Anne Hunter

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Incarcerated individuals have many needs that are not addressed while incarcerated or upon return to the community. These needs are exacerbated by the 'collateral consequences,' and 'invisible punishments' of a criminal conviction which are the state and federal social policies that limit formerly incarcerated persons opportunities for voting, employment, housing, financial benefits, and education, among others. The stigma associated with a criminal conviction may impact offender reentry and reintegration and be compounded by reentry policies. For example, studies have demonstrated that ex-offenders' perceive stigma related to the ex-offender label and that perceived stigma often leads to adverse coping strategies. Furthermore, …

An Exploratory Factor Analysis Of The Inventory Of Beliefs Of Wife Beating For African American College Students, Vanessa Laskowski Aug 2013

An Exploratory Factor Analysis Of The Inventory Of Beliefs Of Wife Beating For African American College Students, Vanessa Laskowski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

While intimate partner violence (IPV) is present in all cultures, socio-economic classes and races, the experiences of minority women have been routinely overlooked. Intimate partner violence impacts African American women at a rate higher than any other racial group of women. The Inventory of Beliefs of Wife Beating (IBWB) measures attitudes and beliefs about intimate partner violence. This study examined the responses of African American college students to a modified version (prompted to think specifically of African American relationships) of the IBWB through factor and parallel analyses. This study also examined the gender differences in responses on the IBWB. Additionally, …

Simon Says Syndrome In Art And Design Education, Muhizam Mustafa, Mumtaz Begum Aboo Backer, A. S. Hardy Shafii, Azila Zainal Aug 2013

Simon Says Syndrome In Art And Design Education, Muhizam Mustafa, Mumtaz Begum Aboo Backer, A. S. Hardy Shafii, Azila Zainal

Learn X Design Conference Series

Learning is an important ‘task-conscious process’ that help changes in behaviour (or potential for change). In other words, learning is seen as an outcome - the ‘end product’ of some process. The ‘Simon Says Syndrome’ term was coined based on observation where teachers provide little learning for students other than the experience of doing. This resulted in students being apt at following instructions rather than exploring the process of learning. This paper also argues that ‘Simon Says Syndrome’ may be defined or reflected from the set of conventional practices and systems for teaching (or learning) especially within the art and …

Images Of The Modern Day Family, Leslie Duke, Richard Hull

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This project was an exciting exploration into the realms of both art and society. Originally, as was stated in my grant proposal, the goal of this project was to create a series of narrative illustrations depicting the dynamics of the modern day family, particularly focusing on the urban families of New York City. These illustrations were to be completed using visual research, such as sketches, on-site paintings and photographs, taken in New York City.

Teaching Kindness To Parents Of School Children In Paraguay, Mark L. Elliott, Wesley R. Burr Aug 2013

Teaching Kindness To Parents Of School Children In Paraguay, Mark L. Elliott, Wesley R. Burr

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In May of 1996, I traveled to South America to teach a family life education course to parents in Paraguay. In the months preceding the trip, I sent packets of information to various public secondary schools in the area around the capital of Asuncion, offering a family enrichment course at no cost. After selecting a school, arrangements were made for school administrators to provide a classroom and needed materials for instruction.

What Lies Ahead: An Exploration Of Future Orientation, Self-Control, And Delinquency, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard Aug 2013

What Lies Ahead: An Exploration Of Future Orientation, Self-Control, And Delinquency, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Self-control has been consistently linked to antisocial behavior and though low self-control makes delinquency more likely, neither the findings nor the theory suggests that low self-control necessitates participation in such behavior. There remains a shortage of research on those situational factors or individual characteristics that might lessen the effects of low self-control on antisocial behavior. Future orientation is one such characteristic that can have implications for the control of behavior. The purpose of the current study was to explore the independent and interactive effects of future orientation and low self-control on delinquency using data from Wave 1 of the National …
