From The Ashes Of Waco: Examining The Legal Difference Between A Cult And A Religion, Sara E. Stauffer, Dr. John Thomas Sep 2013

From The Ashes Of Waco: Examining The Legal Difference Between A Cult And A Religion, Sara E. Stauffer, Dr. John Thomas

Journal of Undergraduate Research

While working at the United States Senate in Washington, D.C., my attempts to determine the legal difference between a cult and a religion were met by brick walls and forks in the road. The question became one fraught with sticky nuances and thinly drawn lines; it was an issue shrouded in grey. In today’s world, defining a religious belief is equivalent to opening a Pandora’s box; it only unleashes trouble and controversy. Consequently, my quest for greater understanding of the legal intricacies concerning religious liberty became frustrating. I found that the more I learned, the more questions I had. I …

Withdrawing To A Virtual World: Associations Between Subtypes Of Withdrawal, Problematic Media, And Risk Behaviors In Emerging Adults, Emily Howard, Dr. Larry Nelson, Dr. Sarah Coyne Sep 2013

Withdrawing To A Virtual World: Associations Between Subtypes Of Withdrawal, Problematic Media, And Risk Behaviors In Emerging Adults, Emily Howard, Dr. Larry Nelson, Dr. Sarah Coyne

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Anecdotal evidence suggests that ‘gamers’ tend to be socially withdrawn, keeping to themselves and their PlayStations. However, research connecting withdrawal and media use is conflicting and inconclusive, likely because the varying motivations leading to withdrawal are not fully considered1. An approach-avoidance model of social withdrawal uses 2 measures to address the differing motivations leading to the same withdrawn behaviors. The first, approach, measures a person’s desire to engage in social situations, whereas the second, avoidance, measures inhibition. Combined, they define 3 variations of withdrawal: shyness (high approach, high avoidance), unsociability (low approach, low avoidance), and avoidance (low approach, high avoidance).2 …

Associations Between Marital Beliefs And Life Satisfaction: The Role Of Relationship Status, Eden Moss, Dr. Brian J. Willoughby Sep 2013

Associations Between Marital Beliefs And Life Satisfaction: The Role Of Relationship Status, Eden Moss, Dr. Brian J. Willoughby

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Marital Paradigm framework [MPF] (Willoughby & Hall, 2013) is a new conceptual model and body of terminology focused on organizing marital attitudes scholarship. Recent scholarship has established that marital attitudes have a strong impact on outcomes. Willoughby and colleagues’ work demonstrates the effect an individual’s marital attitudes have on the formation of others’ marital attitudes, from which measureable outcomes such as delaying marriage have been found (Willoughby & Carrol, 2012; Willoughby & Olson, 2012). Considering this connection between marital attitudes and outcomes, we decided to investigate another outcome of importance in relation to marital attitudes—life satisfaction. General attitudinal research …

When We Say We're Bored, What Are We Really Saying About Ourselves?, Nathan Holic

UCF Forum

In late August, three teenagers in Oklahoma targeted and murdered a random jogger for no other reason than because they were bored. The story is heartbreaking, maddening, and chilling, and it’s made even more so by their explanation: boredom.

Facebook And Relationships: A Study Of How Social Media Use Is Affecting Long-Term Relationships, Rianne C. Farrugia Sep 2013

Facebook And Relationships: A Study Of How Social Media Use Is Affecting Long-Term Relationships, Rianne C. Farrugia

Theses

An online survey was conducted where 255 respondents provided information about their significant other. Respondents answered questions dealing with elements of relationship satisfaction, Facebook usage, surveillance, and jealousy. Results indicate a correlation between Facebook usage and relationship satisfaction. Individuals with varying levels of Facebook usage were shown to have a positive correlation with jealousy levels in their relationship, meaning as Facebook use increased, jealousy also increased. Altman and Taylor's theory of social penetration (1973) was used to describe the stages in a relationship from orientation into a relationship of stable exchange. This developmental theory illustrated the growth in relationship phases. …

Dismantling The Dominant Narrative Of The Irreversibility Of Schizophrenia : Three Meaning Making Approaches To Psychosis, Sarah K. Alpern Sep 2013

Dismantling The Dominant Narrative Of The Irreversibility Of Schizophrenia : Three Meaning Making Approaches To Psychosis, Sarah K. Alpern

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The dominant discourse of schizophrenia as an incurable and biologically determined disease was interrogated through the lenses of race, culture, postmodern philosophy as well as quantitative and qualitative data suggesting a causal relationship between trauma and psychosis (Ensink, 1992; Read, J., van Os, J., Morrison, A.P. and Ross, C. A., 2005; Romme and Escher, 1989, 1996, 2000). The superior outcomes of those treatment models that privileged psychosocial support over pharmaceutical interventions also called into question the primacy of the medical model, as did the longitudinal studies of the World Health Organization (WHO) and over-representation in diagnosis among African Americans (Osiezagha, …

The Perceived Role Of Biological Father Contact In The Self-Estem Development Of Young African American Women : An Exploratory Study, Kendra R. Archer

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study was designed to explore how young self-identified women of African American and African descent describe the connection between their father-daughter relationships and their self-esteem development. This exploratory study presents findings and narratives from the perspectives of 14 self-identified women of African American and African descent between the ages of 22- 30 who had face-to face contact with their biological fathers for at least five years throughout their lives. It was expected that the African American women in this study would speak to their experiences of paternal love or rejection in ways, which were tied positively or negatively …

Spatially Explicit Data: Stewardship And Ethical Challenges In Science, Joel N. Hartter, Sadie J. Ryan, Catrina A. Mackenzie, John N. Parker, Carly A. Strasser

Geography

Scholarly communication is at an unprecedented turning point created in part by the increasing saliency of data stewardship and data sharing. Formal data management plans represent a new emphasis in research, enabling access to data at higher volumes and more quickly, and the potential for replication and augmentation of existing research. Data sharing has recently transformed the practice, scope, content, and applicability of research in several disciplines, in particular in relation to spatially specific data. This lends exciting potentiality, but the most effective ways in which to implement such changes, particularly for disciplines involving human subjects and other sensitive information, …

Originalism, Stare Decisis, And Constitutional Authority, Christopher J. Peters Sep 2013

Originalism, Stare Decisis, And Constitutional Authority, Christopher J. Peters

All Faculty Scholarship

This chapter examines the relationship among three normative questions about

American constitutional law: How should the Constitution be interpreted? When

may (or should) the Supreme Court overrule its own constitutional precedents? And

why is the Constitution binding at all? The author begins by de-constructing the

“special difficulty” with stare decisis that proponents of originalist interpretation

often perceive. That difficulty, the author contends, can be ex-plained only by

reference to some underlying normative theory of constitutional authority―of why

the Constitution binds us in the first place. The author then as-sesses four extant

accounts of constitutional authority to determine whether any of …

Raziskovalna Produktivnost In Ustvarjanje Znanja V Slovenskih Ekonomsko-Poslovnih Šolah, Simon Čadež, Vlado Dimovski, Katja Okorn

Economic and Business Review

The article analyses research productivity and knowledge creation at three leading Slovenian business schools in the period from 2000 to 2011. Research productivity, content and quality of new knowledge created are measured using the bibliometric method, and research productivity is also compared between schools and between individual researchers. The main findings of the study are: (1) research productivity over the period studied tends to increase, (2) much of the knowledge created is not in the field of economics and business, (3) the quality of new knowledge created is relatively low, and the creation of cutting-edge knowledge is low, (4) research …

New Challenges For Strategy Development In Irish Higher Education Institutions., Deirdre Lillis, Marion Lynch Sep 2013

New Challenges For Strategy Development In Irish Higher Education Institutions., Deirdre Lillis, Marion Lynch

Articles

Strategic planning has become an integral part of the management of higher education institutions worldwide. The experiences of all but one of the Republic of Ireland’s 21 Universities and Institutes of Technology with strategic planning are explored from 2000-2010. At the starting point in 2000 only two Institutions had a documented strategic plan. Ten years later all had undergone one or more iterations of strategic planning. Qualitative research methods were used including document analysis of n=42 strategic plans, n=12 institutional review reports and n=26 interviews with senior managers with responsibility for strategic planning. The paper considers whether the strategic planning …

Attention To Sport In A Globalizing World: A Cross-National Analysis, Andrew Breidenbach Sep 2013

Attention To Sport In A Globalizing World: A Cross-National Analysis, Andrew Breidenbach

Sociology ETDs

Throughout the last century, sports have become more important than ever to individuals around the world. This project seeks to explore and help explain variation in attention to sport among 34 countries in 2007 using two theories about world development coupled with modernization- and globalization-related arguments. The aim is to show how the host of concepts contained within these theories can be used cohesively to help understand world regional and national differences in participation and viewing rates, as well as the motives which drive these forms of attention to sport. The project seeks to push predominant development theories to consider …

Disruption Of Ritual: Doctor/Patient Interactions In The Era Of Internet, Amanda Seeman Sep 2013

Disruption Of Ritual: Doctor/Patient Interactions In The Era Of Internet, Amanda Seeman

Sociology ETDs

The historical establishment of medicine as a profession laid the foundation on which it claims dominance and authority over medical decision-making. Through scientific discoveries and a state-recognized monopoly over medical work, doctors were able to subdue patients during doctor/patient interactions and conceal specialized knowledge from the public. Ritualized doctor/patient interactions are characterized as expert physician decision-making for passive compliant patients. However, the democratization of information on the internet has disrupted the ritual interactions of doctors and patients by granting open access to specialized medical knowledge. Internet informed patients bring their own knowledge to clinical encounters and use it to be …

Music And Conflict Resolution: Can A Music And Story Centered Workshop Enhance Empathy?, Parfait Adegboyé Bassalé

Dissertations and Theses

The Story and Song Centered Pedagogy (SSCP) is a workshop that uses songs, stories and reflective questioning to increase empathy. This preliminary study tested the prediction that being exposed to the SSCP would increase empathy using, the Emotional Concern (EC) and Perspective Taking (PT) subscales of the renowned Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) (Davis, 1990). Subjects self-reported their answers to the IRI before and after undergoing the SSCP intervention. Comparing their pre and post intervention results, no statistically significant changes were noticed for the EC and PT scales (p-value = 0.7093 for EC; p-value = 0.6328 for PT). These results stand …

A Historical Perspective For Incorporating The Airframe And Powerplant Certificate As A Relevant Engineering Technology Skill, J. M. Thom, S. I. Dubikovsky, T. C. Hagovsky, R. M. Hendricks Sep 2013

A Historical Perspective For Incorporating The Airframe And Powerplant Certificate As A Relevant Engineering Technology Skill, J. M. Thom, S. I. Dubikovsky, T. C. Hagovsky, R. M. Hendricks

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

At first, the concept of an engineering technology program containing an Airframe and Powerplant certificate (A&P) program might seem to be odd. At many colleges and universities the A&P program is considered to be a vocational certificate program, while the engineering program is considered to be more of a professional degree program. The engineering faculty credentials and mandated classroom requirements for engineering have traditionally been diametrically opposed with the A&P certification. But on second look the combination of these two disciplines may not be as odd as it first seems. In fact, the A&P curriculums in four-year colleges today are …

Parental Involvement's Effects On Academic Performance: Evidence From The Youthsave Ghana Experiment, Gina A. N. Chowa, Rainier D. Masa, Jenna Tucker

Center for Social Development Research

Research in developed countries suggests that parental involvement is associated with youth academic success, but little is known about this relationship in developing countries. Further, it is unclear which type of parental involvement may impact the academic performance of youth from developing countries. This study examines whether (a) parental involvement at home and in school are meaningfully different constructs in a population of Ghanaian youth and their parents and (b) parental involvement predicts academic performance. Results suggest that parental involvement is a bidimensional construct consists of home and school involvement. The effect of parental involvement on youth academic performance appears …

SURGE

If you’ve been anywhere near your Facebook newsfeed in the last few days, you’re probably familiar with the most recent images of Miley Cyrus at her less-than-graceful VMA performance. From CNN’s front page headline, “What Was Miley Thinking?” to Buzzfeed’s gifset of a cartoon Cyrus twerking on famous paintings, her antics have, for better or for worse, become a hyper-inflated mega-sensation that I, frankly, don’t care about at all. I’m not going to talk about Miley anymore. Instead, let’s talk about her co-performer, Robin Thicke. [excerpt]

International Graduate Students’ Cross - Cultural Academic Engagement: Stories Of Indonesian Doctoral Students On An American Campus, Amirul Mukminin, Brenda J. Mcmahon

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of academic engagement of twelve Indonesian doctoral students attending an American graduate school during their first term and over time through demographic background surveys and semi - structured in - depth interviews. The research design was qualitative in the phenomenological approach (Creswell, 2007; Merriam, 1998; Moustakas, 1994; Patton, 1990). We analyzed our interviews data by using within - case and cross - case displays and analyses (Miles & Huberman, 1994) while we analyzed the demographic data descriptively. We identified five major themes related to Indonesian doctoral students’ academic engagement …

The Power Of Resilience: A Theoretical Model To Empower, Encourage And Retain Teachers, Janice L. Taylor Sep 2013

The Power Of Resilience: A Theoretical Model To Empower, Encourage And Retain Teachers, Janice L. Taylor

The Qualitative Report

Due to the many challenges that teachers face in today’s classrooms to facilitate the academic success of all children and to meet federal and state accountability standards, having both the competence and the ability to adjust to meet these challenges are required. Teacher retention is an ongoing issue in the United States; teachers who lack these traits may have a negative impact on teacher retention. Resiliency is a critical element that teachers need to meet these challenges and remain in the education profession. In this study, the stories of four female African American teachers who taught in the same school …
