The Training And Use Of Service Dogs In Occupational Therapy Education, Mary Isaacson
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
The purpose of this study is to describe the role of occupational therapy fieldwork students in the training of service dogs. Ethnography is an approach that strives to explore and describe the point of view of people. Ethnographers view the researcher as an instrument to gain insight into the subject. This researcher utilized her own experiences as an occupational therapist, an occupational therapy educator, and as a volunteer dog trainer of service dogs. She then validated the process through interviews with key informants. The results indicate that occupational therapists and occupational therapy students are capable of playing a significant role …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objectives: Communications skills (CS) training for medical interviewing is increasingly being conducted in English at medical schools worldwide. In this study, we sought to identify whether Arabic-speaking medical students experienced difficulty with the different components of the CS training that were conducted in English. Methods: Individual third-year preclinical medical students (N = 45) were videotaped while interviewing simulated patients. Each student assessed his/her performance on a 13-item (5-point scale) assessment form, which was also completed by the tutor and other students in the group. Results: Of the 13 components of their CS training, tutors awarded the lowest marks for students’ …

Justice For All, Patricia Kay Oliver
Pepperdine Law Review
Fourteen years into her career at a top U.S. law firm, no one would have imagined that Patricia K. Oliver would walk away from her private practice to return to the world of her poverty-filled childhood in Compton. But in 2011, she left her practice to serve as the President and Executive Director of Christian Legal Aid of Los Angeles (CLA-LA). This is the story of her journey, which she was honored to share at the Pepperdine Law Review's The Lawyer of the Future symposium.

The Impact Of Perpetrator Gender On Child Protective Services Sexual Abuse Cases: A National Picture, David Axlyn Mcleod
The Impact Of Perpetrator Gender On Child Protective Services Sexual Abuse Cases: A National Picture, David Axlyn Mcleod
Theses and Dissertations
Child sexual assault is a problem of epidemic proportions in the United States with some research suggesting up to one fifth of our nations children being victimized before reaching adulthood. Research has suggested females could be responsible for up to 20% of child sexual abuse cases, and at the same time only represent only 1% of sexual offenders incarcerated the US. This creates a situation where a large group of relatively under-researched offenders are evading detection. Numerous calls for further research have been made, but relatively few studies have had the ability to shed significant light on this phenomenon on …

Sexual Orientation Differences In The Relationship Between Victimization And Hazardous Drinking Among Women In The National Alcohol Survey, Laurie A. Drabble, K. F. Trocki, T. L. Hughes, R. A. Korcha, A. E. Lown
Faculty Publications
This study examined relationships between past experiences of victimization (sexual abuse and physical abuse in childhood, sexual abuse and physical abuse in adulthood, and lifetime victimization) and hazardous drinking among sexual minority women compared to exclusively heterosexual women. Data were from 11,169 women responding to sexual identity and sexual behavior questions from three National Alcohol Survey waves: 2000 (n = 3,880), 2005 (n = 3,464), and 2010 (n = 3,825). A hazardous drinking index was constructed from five dichotomous variables (5+ drinking in the past year, drinking two or more drinks daily, drinking to intoxication in the past year, two …

Challenging Cultural Discourses And Beliefs That Perpetuate Domestic Violence In South Asian Communities: A Discourse Analysis, Janki Shankar, Gita Das, Sabrina Atwal
Challenging Cultural Discourses And Beliefs That Perpetuate Domestic Violence In South Asian Communities: A Discourse Analysis, Janki Shankar, Gita Das, Sabrina Atwal
Journal of International Women's Studies
South Asians are one of the fastest growing immigrant communities in North America. Domestic violence (DV) in the South Asian community is at least as prevalent as it is in the general population, yet is massively underreported. Several reasons have been cited for the silence of South Asian immigrant women about DV. While some of these are financial, social and structural, there are others that arise from discourses specific to South Asian communities. The aim of this study was to examine the origins of these discourses using the framework of historical critical discourse analysis. This paper presents the results of …
