Research Brief: "Battlefield Compassion And Post-Traumatic Growth In Combat Servicepersons", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief is about the compassionate acts that come out of post-traumatic growth among veterans after serving. For policy and practice, the research shows that military values, bonding experiences, and maturation through military service allows for positive personal growth and that the VA should provide programs for discussing this growth. Suggestions for future research include taking into account variations in specific experiences when analyzing post-traumatic growth and including a representative random sample.

Highlighting The Importance Of Researching Family Homelessness, Ronald E. Hallett, William G. Tierney Mar 2013

Highlighting The Importance Of Researching Family Homelessness, Ronald E. Hallett, William G. Tierney

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

This invited commentary responds to and builds upon Tobin and Murphy's article, “Addressing the Challenges of Child and Family Homelessness.” In affirming the ideas emerging from this article, Hallett and Tierney provide three points of extension: (1) more research needs to be conducted with doubled-up families; (2) the role of shame needs further exploration; and, (3) additional work needs to be done to increase access to postsecondary institutions.

The Need For School-Based Teen Dating Violence Prevention, Jeff R. Temple, Vi D. Le, Alexandra Muir, Laurie Goforth, Amy L. Mcelhany Mar 2013

The Need For School-Based Teen Dating Violence Prevention, Jeff R. Temple, Vi D. Le, Alexandra Muir, Laurie Goforth, Amy L. Mcelhany

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Schools have several competing demands, and often suffer from inefficient access to needed resources. Thus, the addition of any program into an already overtaxed school system must be met with convincing evidence that 1) a need or problem exists and is relevant to the education of students, 2) the problem is amenable to change, and 3) addressing the problem is in the best interest of educators and students. The purpose of the present paper is to present a case for inclusion of teen dating violence prevention programs in middle and high schools. We also discuss a recent survey of 219 …

Development And Evaluation Of The Eastern Pennsylvania And Delaware Geriatric Education Center’S (Epad Gec) Geriatric Oncology Online Toolkit, Mariana R. Kuperman

Master of Public Health Capstone Presentations

Older adults have higher cancer rates than younger adults. Treating geriatric cancer patients is a challenge because they present with comorbidities, poly-pharmacy, physical frailty, and/or cognitive impairment. The interprofessional oncology treatment team may not be adequately trained to meet the special needs of geriatric cancer patients. The EPaD GEC focuses on interprofessional geriatric education targeting students, faculty and practitioners by developing and disseminating interprofessional geriatric training programs, including self-directed online learning modules. The Geriatric Oncology Care Module focuses on specialized considerations in the treatment/care of older cancer patients. The purpose of this project is to develop a Geriatric Oncology toolkit …

Catholics On The Margins In India: Dalits And Adivasis, Leo D. Lefebure Mar 2013

Catholics On The Margins In India: Dalits And Adivasis, Leo D. Lefebure

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

This article discusses the lives of the Catholic Dalit and adivasi communities in India and surveys recent theologies developed in this context. These communities constitute the majority of Catholics in India today, but they have frequently been neglected in theological discussions, and they continue to suffer discrimination both in Indian society and in the Catholic Church. The author reviews a number of interpretations of biblical theology in relation to Dalit experience, as well as the Christology of a pioneering adivasi theologian and a Trinitarian theology developed in relation to adivasi life. The article concludes with reflections of the author on …

Beauty-Ful Inferiority: Female Subservience In Disney’S Beauty And The Beast, Jeremy Chow Mar 2013

Beauty-Ful Inferiority: Female Subservience In Disney’S Beauty And The Beast, Jeremy Chow

LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University

The ubiquity of Disney movies has certainly transformed the American cultural landscape. The Disney zeitgeist manifests itself as generations of children actively seek Prince Charmings, unrealistic fairy tale relationships and the omnipotent, happily-ever-after. One such Disney favorite, Beauty and the Beast (1991), reveals typical Disney themes such as the power of altruism, the transformation of the anthropomorphic, and the catharsis of true love. Yet, under these benevolent-seeming Disney themes lurk more sinister, subliminal messages. Beauty and the Beast promotes female subservience and subjugation in addition to the glorification of abusive relationships. Belle, the female protagonist, embodies these gendered disparities and …

Stepfamily Functioning And Closeness: Children's Views On Second Marriages And Stepfather Relationships, Todd M. Jensen, Kevin Shafer Mar 2013

Stepfamily Functioning And Closeness: Children's Views On Second Marriages And Stepfather Relationships, Todd M. Jensen, Kevin Shafer

Faculty Publications

Current research on stepfamily well-being often overlooks the perspective of children, and deals primarily with factors as reported by the adults involved. The authors examine a number of family role characteristics, parental subsystem characteristics, and resources that might influence how children perceive the quality of their stepfamily relationships. A sample of 1,088 children in households with a mother and stepfather, ages 10 to 16 years, in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, 1979 cohort—Children and Young Adult Sample, is used for the analyses. Results indicate that open communication between children and their mothers, low amounts of arguing between mothers and …

“Listen Carefully:” A Study Of Ageist Stereotypes And Undergraduates’ Desire To Work With Elders, Genevieve Ilg Mar 2013

“Listen Carefully:” A Study Of Ageist Stereotypes And Undergraduates’ Desire To Work With Elders, Genevieve Ilg

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

“Listen Carefully:” A Study of Ageist Stereotypes and Undergraduates’ Desire to Work with Elders identifies and assesses how prior experience with elders and ageist stereotypes informs the degree to which undergraduates are inclined (or disinclined) to consider geriatrics as a potential career. Current literature indicates a lack of interest among social workers and other allied-health professionals in working with this demographic. Here, the “generation gap” not only pertains to the differences between younger people and their elders, but to the gap between the aging population’s increasing demand of need and how many individuals plan to serve the elderly. For this …

The Danger Of Duality: Medicare And Medicaid As A Double Threat, Erica Barnum Mar 2013

The Danger Of Duality: Medicare And Medicaid As A Double Threat, Erica Barnum

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

My paper discusses the topic of dual eligible beneficiaries – a group of some nine million individuals that has rightly earned a reputation for being the most costly, frail, sickly, and vulnerable population. Individuals are considered “dual eligible” when they qualify for the benefits of both government programs of Medicare and Medicaid. The main problem within the dual eligible arena is the lack of coordination between these two programs – the federal government wholly funds Medicare but Medicaid is a joint federal-state program that varies from state to state. Because these programs were not designed to work together and sometimes …
