The Educational Attainment Of Minority Learners Who Attended 2-Year Colleges Compared To Caucasian Students, Angel N. Skinner May 2013

The Educational Attainment Of Minority Learners Who Attended 2-Year Colleges Compared To Caucasian Students, Angel N. Skinner

Theses and Dissertations

In this educational study, Caucasian and minority learners’ grade point averages and overall academic success were examined at learning institutions. Several minorities experienced problems with completing college courses at universities and community colleges. Individuals from various racial backgrounds had school enrollment issues compared to Caucasian students without these same issues. This analysis revealed factors that contributed to these learners’ decreased academic attainment. For this study, racial groups were the focus along with their need to improve their impoverished conditions. Minority students needed more educational services such as peer tutoring and academic counseling. These services offered learners the opportunity to expand …

Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Supervisees' Experiences Of Lgb-Affirmative And Non-Affirmative Supervision In Coamfte-Accredited Training Programs, Nicole O'Brien May 2013

Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Supervisees' Experiences Of Lgb-Affirmative And Non-Affirmative Supervision In Coamfte-Accredited Training Programs, Nicole O'Brien

Doctoral Dissertations

This study is a replication of Burkard, Knox, Hess, and Schultz’s (2009) study of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) affirmative and non-affirmative supervision. Using a consensual qualitative research (CQR) design as described by Hill et al. (1997, 2005), LGB supervisees from COAMFTE-accredited master’s and doctoral programs were interviewed regarding their experiences of LGB-affirmative and non-affirmative supervision. Supervisees were asked to describe a LGB-affirmative event and a LGB-non-affirmative event from their past or current individual or group supervision. Supervisees were asked the ways in which these events affected their personal and professional development, the supervisory relationship, and their work with clients.

The Lived Experience Of African American Nurses Who Attended Predominantly White University Baccalaureate Programs: Characteristics Of Success And Resilience, Carmen A. Stokes May 2013

The Lived Experience Of African American Nurses Who Attended Predominantly White University Baccalaureate Programs: Characteristics Of Success And Resilience, Carmen A. Stokes

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This qualitative dissertation explores the lived experiences of successful African-American nurses who attended baccalaureate programs at predominantly White universities (PWUs). Only 5.4% of the national registered nurse workforce is identified as African American; yet African-American citizens account for approximately 12.9% of the United States' population, and 24% of all enrollments in nursing programs nationwide is composed of African-American students. Past nursing education research has almost exclusively focused on the deficits of African-American students. This dissertation study focuses on a gap in the literature because it addresses the strengths and attributes of those African-American students who succeed, thereby contributing to an …

Friends With Benefits Or “Friends” With Deficits? The Meaning And Contexts Of Uncommitted Sexual Relationships Among Mexican American And European American Adolescents, Lela Rankin Williams, Heidi Adams Rueda May 2013

Friends With Benefits Or “Friends” With Deficits? The Meaning And Contexts Of Uncommitted Sexual Relationships Among Mexican American And European American Adolescents, Lela Rankin Williams, Heidi Adams Rueda

Social Work Faculty Publications

Using focus groups, this study sought to understand and compare how Mexican American (n = 41, M = 16.0 years old, SD = .96) and European American (n = 34, M = 16.1 years old, SD = .64) youths conceptualize and experience “friends with benefits” relationships (FWBRs). Contrary to the implied nature of friendship, partners did not show caring and viewed FWBRs as a means to meet sexual needs. The “benefits” of this arrangement included guilt-free pleasure, little responsibility, the freedom to date others, or to remain available for a more desirable partner. The inherent deficits of FWBRs, …

Arts For All Experience: Examining The Experiences Of Individuals Who Receive Snap Benefits As They Access Arts Through The Arts For All Program, Michelle Deparrie, Jana L. Meinhold

Student Research Symposium

Status symbols, are behaviors that individuals use to communicate their place in society (Goffman, 1950). A commonly noted status symbol is participation in the high arts. A recent study described types of music in categories ranging from high-brow, to middle-brow, and low-brow. It was found that consumers of music, particularly the high-brow, were motivated to attend concerts for reasons relating to social capital (Roose & Stichele, 2010). Arts for All is a program in Portland Oregon that offers access to high art performances by making five dollar tickets available to those who qualify for SNAP (Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program). The …

Family-Centered Practice In The Field Of Early Intervention, Catherine A. Collie May 2013

Family-Centered Practice In The Field Of Early Intervention, Catherine A. Collie

Research Papers

In Early Intervention (EI), family-centered practices are recommended and family-centered services are espoused as the main delivery method. Yet, EI service providers may not implement this approach. This literature review will examine provider and family perspectives of the delivery of family-centered services in the context of the Division for Early Childhood’s recommended practices indicators of family-centered services. Findings indicated a gap between what families and providers believed were ideal family-centered practices and what was actually being implemented in EI. Barriers such as training for providers and families and lack of appropriate resources were identified. Implications for the future are evaluation …

Incentives To Improve Economic Conditions: A Field Experiment In Medellin, Colombia, Lauren Skora May 2013

Incentives To Improve Economic Conditions: A Field Experiment In Medellin, Colombia, Lauren Skora

Master's Theses

The motivation for this research is to replicate the Oakland based Family Independence Initiative (FII) and to test the components of this model. The FII program claims its success stems from a bottom-up approach structured around setting life-improving goals, mutual support groups, and small monetary incentives to achieve results. As the popularity of this program continues to gain momentum in the United States, we designed a field experiment to measure the impact of incentives on goal achievement and economic conditions as well as the overall impact of the FII model. We enrolled close to 200 small business owners in four …

Objective: Examine factors influencing breastfeeding behaviors in adolescent mothers, particularly those in Thailand. Methods: This dissertation project involved two research studies focusing on breastfeeding influencing factors in adolescent mothers. A Pilot Test On The Role Of Power In Mate Choice, Addison Zhao May 2013

A Pilot Test On The Role Of Power In Mate Choice, Addison Zhao

Honors Scholar Theses

To test two competing theories, social role and sexual strategies, a study was proposed to have participants evaluate dating profiles that varied in agency, communion, and status. Power was also manipulated to test for effects on likelihood to date an individual. To test methods used for the proposed study, a pilot study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a power prime task, a manipulation check for the power prime task, the attractiveness of 24 pictures, and an analysis of 12 profiles. The study found that power priming with analogies did not significantly lead to participants feeling powerful. This finding …

Immigration And Farm Labor In The U.S., Philip Martin, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith May 2013

Immigration And Farm Labor In The U.S., Philip Martin, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Hired workers comprise 33 percent of people employed on farms but do an estimated 60 percent of the work performed on U.S. farms. Most hired farm workers were born abroad, usually in Mexico, and most are believed not to be authorized to work in the U.S. Changes in Mexico-US migration flows and more restrictive immigration laws and policies have increased the vulnerability of U.S. agriculture to labor supply shocks, which could increase costs and threaten the ability of some farmers to harvest laborintensive crops. Congress is considering major changes in immigration policies. Farm employers want access to a reliable supply …
