Solidarity In Action Jewish Women And Community During The Holocaust, Elizabeth Burger Jan 2013

Solidarity In Action Jewish Women And Community During The Holocaust, Elizabeth Burger

Theses & ETDs

Jewish women's experiences during the Holocaust have been largely ignored in favor of a predominantly male narrative. Though scholars have disagreed over the benefits of studying gendered Holocaust history, more female oral testimonies have been recorded, revealing the unique experiences that each gender lived through. Women's particular struggles have been the most invisible throughout this area of study. By studying their behavior, historians can add to a greater sense of diversity within Holocaust experiences that allows for more insight to be drawn about life in the ghettos and the camps. This thesis looks at unique patterns of behavior that emerged …

Polemic, Redaction, And History In The Mandaean Book Of John: The Case Of The Lightworld Visitors To Jerusalem, James F. Mcgrath

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

It is unclear whether there is anything of historical usefulness that can be gleaned from the details of the depictions of figures such as John the Baptist, Miriai, and Jesus in the Mandaean Book of John. This does not mean, however, that the text cannot provide useful information about the history of the Mandaeans, and of their interactions with other religious communities. By analyzing the evidence for redaction in certain key sections, and by distinguishing between core elements and peripheral additions to the stories recorded in it, it is possible to draw conclusions about the tradition history of the material, …

Feminist Methodologies And Qumran Ideologies: Rhetorical Criticism Of 1qs, The Community Rule Scroll, Lacy Mroz Jan 2013

Feminist Methodologies And Qumran Ideologies: Rhetorical Criticism Of 1qs, The Community Rule Scroll, Lacy Mroz

Theses & ETDs

This thesis critiques the scholarly method of imposing binary categories onto historical reconstruction. It examines sectarian attitudes toward the Temple in The Community Rule of the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the complex relationship between the Qumran sect and Temple that binary systems conceal. Chapter One uses a feminist methodology to critique the categorical method and highlights the ways in which rhetorical analysis helps execute a feminist critical reading. Chapter Two highlights the limits and shortcomings of scholarship that relies on binary categories to understand Dead Sea Scrolls. Chapter Three applies rhetorical analysis to The Community Rule and investigates the complexities …

Emotion And Memory In Nostalgia Sport Tourism: Examining The Attraction To Postmodern Ballparks Through An Interdisciplinary Lens, Kiernan O. Gordon Jan 2013

Emotion And Memory In Nostalgia Sport Tourism: Examining The Attraction To Postmodern Ballparks Through An Interdisciplinary Lens, Kiernan O. Gordon

Kinesiology

Nostalgia sport tourism, one of Gibson’s (1998) three forms of sport tourism, appears to have received little scholarly attention in contrast to active sport tourism and event sport tourism (Fairley, 2003; Gibson, 2002, 2003; Ritchie & Adair, 2004). Despite this apparent lack of research relative to the other two domains, insightful and thought-provoking scholarship has emerged within nostalgia sport tourism. Sociology, which is one of sport tourism’s parent disciplines, has influenced much of this scholarship (Gibson, 2004; Harris, 2006). Among other things, this epistemological orientation has yielded the importance of emotion and memory to nostalgically oriented experiences. This paper considers …

Fluid Boundaries And The Assertion Of Difference In Low-Caste Religious Identity, Nancy M. Martin Jan 2013

Fluid Boundaries And The Assertion Of Difference In Low-Caste Religious Identity, Nancy M. Martin

Religious Studies Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"The boundaries of religious traditions are being actively contested in India today, though in practice their internal and external structures are fl uid and open. Each religion takes a wide array of forms, refl ecting the diversity of the communities and adherents who fi nd relevance and meaning within it, and symbols and practices fl ow readily across what prove to be very permeable and overlapping boundaries between religious traditions. However, religion has been used by the powerful to assert and maintain dominance and in national and regional communal politics, at times fanning the fl ames of extreme violence. Fundamentalists …

There And Back Again: Learning From The History Of A Freshman Seminar Sequence, Stepephanie R. Delusé

Honors in Practice Online Archive

Teaching does not happen in a vacuum just as good courses do not fall from the sky in whole cloth. How and what we teach is woven from any number of past or present influences that include, for instance, tradition, conversation with colleagues, student requests, job market demands, curriculum committees, popular culture, academic advances in a field, or how an academic unit has developed over time. Many honors programs or colleges, however, teach a course sequence that is anchored in the classics and has core texts that one might think are somewhat immune to change. While all such course sequences …

To Make The Rest Participate In It: The Use Of Contemplative Pedagogy In The Holocaust And The Arts, Richard Chess Jan 2013

To Make The Rest Participate In It: The Use Of Contemplative Pedagogy In The Holocaust And The Arts, Richard Chess

Honors in Practice Online Archive

In the preface to Survival in Auschwitz, Primo Levi says he wrote the book because he felt “the need to tell our story to ‘the rest’, to make ‘the rest’ participate in it” (9). Levi’s intentions in writing his essential Holocaust testimony are worth reflecting on for a moment.

“The need to tell”: what is this need? Is it a need to tell so that others will know what happened inside a death camp? Is it the need to warn others so that they will be vigilant in guarding against conditions that could allow another Holocaust to occur? Is …

Social And Emotional Learning: An Argument For Religious Pluralism, Debra Mayconich Baron Jan 2013

Social And Emotional Learning: An Argument For Religious Pluralism, Debra Mayconich Baron

Dissertations

The purpose of this project is to argue that in order for social and emotional learning (SEL) goals to achieve their intended outcomes for students and society, religious pluralism must be reflected in student instruction. SEL involves the use of evidence-based practices to provide opportunities to develop competencies related to self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making which are intended to enable students to demonstrate morally appropriate actions and ethical decisions, which I am calling "right behavior."

It is my argument that one's understanding of right behavior embodies both implicit and explicit moral beliefs based on one's …

Metadata And Lasting Collaborative Success, Felicia J. Williamson Jan 2013

Metadata And Lasting Collaborative Success, Felicia J. Williamson

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Libraries, archives and museums (LAMs) have been creating metadata of various types (catalog records, archival finding aids, museum inventories, etc.) in one form or the other since their foundation. They have also been struggling as historically unique organizations with the best way to capture and manage metadata so that it can be used to organize their collections and provide increased access to users. In recent years, there has been a push to apply metadata standards to enable greater information sharing between LAMs – especially those with a common research or regional focus – and create online exhibits that reach new …
