God's Extended Mind, David P. Hunt Jan 2013

God's Extended Mind, David P. Hunt

Philosophy

God the fully exercised power to know all truths. but why is God’s excellence with respect to knowing not treated on a par with his excellence with respect to doing, where the latter requires only that God have the (exercised or unexercised) power to do all things? The prima facie problem with divine ‘omni-knowledgeability’ – roughly, being able to know whatever one wants to know whenever one wants to know it – is that knowledge (whether occurrent or dispositional) requires an internal representation, whereas mere ‘knowledgeability’ does not. I argue to the contrary that knowledge does not require an internal …

"The Story We Had To Tell:" How Chinua Achebe And Wole Soyinka Reclaimed Nigerian Identity Through Their Writing, Clara Brodie Jan 2013

"The Story We Had To Tell:" How Chinua Achebe And Wole Soyinka Reclaimed Nigerian Identity Through Their Writing, Clara Brodie

Honors Thesis Collection

My project is, in briefest terms, an examination of Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka as colonial and post-colonial Nigerian writers. Through my reading and analysis, I am endeavoring to gain an understanding of how both writers convey the irrevocable consequences of colonialism through their literature and how they represent various aspects of the hybrid identity that British influence on their culture has created.

Jacob's Textual Legacy, John Hilton Iii

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

While Jacob records 15,000 words in the Book of Mormon, he is often underappreciated, perhaps living in the shadow of his older brother Nephi. This study illustrates how Nephi, King Benjamin, and Moroni used Jacob’s words and expanded the influence of his literary legacy.

The Perfect Priest: An Examination Of Leviticus 21:17-23, Jared Wilson Jan 2013

The Perfect Priest: An Examination Of Leviticus 21:17-23, Jared Wilson

Seminary Masters Theses

Leviticus 21:17-23 is a text that discriminates against priests who have one of the twelve blemishes listed, approaching the text with the intent to redeem the text for modern application. An exploration in the role of priests in the ancient Near East will show how the priests were human representations of the deity and many cultures and religions had physical restrictions for the priests similar to Lev 21:17-23. Examining the language of Lev 21:17-23 will show that the restrictions were not merely symbolic but intended to stop blemished priests from approaching the altar. However, they were not statements about the …

Resurgence Of The Traditional Justice System In Postcolonial Benin (Nigeria) Society, Itohan Idumwonyi, Solomon Ikhidero

Religious Studies Faculty Scholarship

Rules and norms of behaviour are common features in human society. This is confirmed by human being’s desire for protection, fairness and mutual respect from fellow humans in their social groups. Recognized authorities whose sanctions are respected help to ensure fairness and mutual respect for each other. The aim of this paper, is to examine (i) the relevance of traditional justice system in postcolonial Benin (African) society; and (ii) the unwavering respect for …

《庄子》中关于身体的诸概念" (Concepts Of The Body In The Zhuangzi), Deborah A. Sommer (司馬黛蘭) Jan 2013

《庄子》中关于身体的诸概念" (Concepts Of The Body In The Zhuangzi), Deborah A. Sommer (司馬黛蘭)

Religious Studies Faculty Publications

In this essay Sommer explores how the Zhuangzi uses such terms for the body as gong 躬, a sanctimonious ritualized body; shen 身, a site of familial and social personhood; xing 形, an elemental form that experiences mutations and mutilations; and ti 體, a complex, multilayered corpus whose center can be anywhere but whose boundaries are nowhere. The Zhuangzi is one of the richest early Chinese sources for exploring conceptualizations of the visceral human form. Zhuangzi presents the human frame as a corpus of flesh, organs, limbs, and bone; he dissects it before the reader's eyes, turning it inside out …
