The Sins Of Leo Mccarey, Richard A. Blake S.J. Apr 2013

The Sins Of Leo Mccarey, Richard A. Blake S.J.

Journal of Religion & Film

Leo McCarey has received little attention from film scholars. His sentimentalizing his Catholic background and his preoccupation with anti-Communism obscured the lasting value of much of his work. His concern with sin and forgiveness form a major motif of his works, from the early comedies to his later serious dramas.

The Problem Of Evil And Humans’ Relationship With God In Terrence Malick’S The Tree Of Life, Bertha Alvarez Manninen Ph.D. Apr 2013

The Problem Of Evil And Humans’ Relationship With God In Terrence Malick’S The Tree Of Life, Bertha Alvarez Manninen Ph.D.

Journal of Religion & Film

Terrence Malick’s 2011 film The Tree of Life defies any attempt to be summarized in a few pat sentences. The movie tackles significant theological issues as it tells the story of one man’s journey to regain his faith after the loss of his beloved brother and a difficult relationship with his father. At the same time, it is also a film about humankind’s relationship to God, and about the kind of life human beings should strive to lead. In this paper, I will discuss two of the film’s main themes: Malick’s response to the problem of evil (or, as it …

Spirit(Uality) In The Films Of Terrence Malick, Christopher B. Barnett Apr 2013

Spirit(Uality) In The Films Of Terrence Malick, Christopher B. Barnett

Journal of Religion & Film

This paper will argue that Terrence Malick is a theological filmmaker, even though scholars have preferred to emphasize his indebtedness to Martin Heidegger. It will proceed by way of Malick’s use of wind imagery. First, it will show that the wind motif recalls theological notions about God as spirit. Second, it will illustrate how Malick employs wind imagery, revealing a sensitivity to the wind’s evocation of God’s presence and absence. Third, it will argue that Malick’s cinematic restraint identifies the practice of detachment [Gelassenheit] as the link between his theological and Heideggerian interests.

The Modern Status And Future Of Dongba Religion, Chris Delacy Apr 2013

The Modern Status And Future Of Dongba Religion, Chris Delacy

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

I have amassed data related to the changes undergone by the Dongba religion and its effects on local Naxi culture in the Eya, Baidi, Tacheng/Weixi County, and Lijiang communities. Each district was unique in that their religious practices and participation by the community was radically different as a result of outside influence (or lack thereof) as evidenced by how the religion is passed on through the generations and how the religion is publicly represented through art. As Naxi culture and the Dongba religion have already undergone an incredible amount of changes (especially the declining number of the Dongba religion’s religious …

Call For Change, Donald L. Fixico Apr 2013

Call For Change, Donald L. Fixico

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

For too many years, the academic discipline of history has ignored American Indians or lacked the kind of open-minded thinking necessary to truly understand them. Most historians remain oriented toward the American experience at the expense of the Native experience. As a result, both the status and the quality of Native American history have suffered and remain marginalized within the discipline. In this impassioned work, noted historian Donald L. Fixico challenges academic historians—and everyone else—to change this way of thinking. Fixico argues that the current discipline and practice of American Indian history are insensitive to and inconsistent with Native people’s …

Tears Of Repentance, Julius H. Rubin Apr 2013

Tears Of Repentance, Julius H. Rubin

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Tears of Repentance revisits and reexamines the familiar stories of intercultural encounters between Protestant missionaries and Native peoples in southern New England from the seventeenth to the early nineteenth centuries. Focusing on Protestant missionaries’ accounts of their ideals, purposes, and goals among the Native communities they served and of the religion as lived, experienced, and practiced among Christianized Indians, Julius H. Rubin offers a new way of understanding the motives and motivations of those who lived in New England’s early Christianized Indian village communities.

Rubin explores how Christian Indians recast Protestant theology into an Indianized quest for salvation from their …

Themes And Narratives Relating To Faith And Healing In The Area Of Durban, South Africa., Natalie Strohmyer Apr 2013

Themes And Narratives Relating To Faith And Healing In The Area Of Durban, South Africa., Natalie Strohmyer

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This project will examine the integration of faith in the healing process through interviews to discover emerging themes. These themes will use narratives, secondary sources, and analysis to delve into some of the questions. Caring for the entirety of a patient is an important role of healthcare and examining the role of faith in healing can illuminate another aspect of the doctor-patient relationship. Faith is very personal and I am interested in looking at the different effects that this has on a person in regards to their outlook on healthcare and the role of the healthcare professional. I would like …
