Association Affinity Network Based Multi-Model Collaboration For Multimedia Big Data Management And Retrieval, Tao Meng

Open Access Dissertations

With the rapid development of smart devices and ever-increasing popularity of social media websites such as Flickr, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook, we have witnessed a huge increase of multimedia data. Recently, social media technology and big data have converged to provide rich content on what happens around the world via texts, images, videos, audios, etc. Given the enormous volumes of multimedia data, efficient and effective retrieval of relevant information according to users’ needs poses great challenges for traditional text-oriented storage and retrieval systems. Since manually annotating and managing the huge amount of information have become infeasible, data-driven approaches have received …

Late Glacial And Holocene Record Of Climatic Change In The Southern Rocky Mountains From Sediments In San Luis Lake, Colorado, Usa, Fasong Yuan, Max R. Koran, Andrew Valdez

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

Large rapid climate changes occurred over the last glacial cycle in the southwestern United States and elsewhere in many regions of the world. Some of these changes were attributed to alternations between stadial and interstadial conditions in the North Atlantic. But intense debate exists on how climate anomalies in the North Atlantic transmit to the southwest. Here we report a sediment record from San Luis Lake in southern Colorado, through analyses of grain size, magnetic susceptibility, Mg/Ca, total inorganic carbon, δ18O and δ13C, to indicate climatic and environmental changes in the southern Rocky Mountains over the …

Applying Best Practices To Florida Local Government Retrofit Programs, Florida Solar Energy Center, Janet Mcilvaine

FSEC Energy Research Center®

In some communities, local government and non-profit entities have funds to purchase and renovate distressed, foreclosed homes for resale in the affordable housing market. Numerous opportunities to improve whole house energy efficiency are inherent in these comprehensive renovations. BA-PIRC worked together in a multiyear field study making recommendations in individual homes, meanwhile compiling improvement costs, projected energy savings, practical challenges, and labor force factors surrounding common energy-related renovation measures. The field study, Phase 1 of this research, resulted in a set of best practices appropriate to the current labor pool and market conditions in central Florida to achieve projected annual …

How Does Climate Change Affect Coral Reefs?, Rachel Goff

Honors Theses

Climate change is a very real phenomenon that currently affects many of the ecosystems on Earth. Climate change occurs on a global scale and can be very detrimental to different environments. This occurrence can cause ocean warming, sea level rise, ocean acidification, and increased storm intensity. According to the EPA, the ocean's temperature has increased 1.4°F over the past century, and sea levels have risen 3.2 millimeters through the past 20 years. These changes to the oceans can greatly affect many of the ecosystems that reside in them. One of the main ecosystems that are being affected by climate change …

Newspaper Presidential Endorsements: Who Publications Support, Why Votes Change, And The Practice’S Sharp Decline, Jesse Rifkin Dec 2013

Newspaper Presidential Endorsements: Who Publications Support, Why Votes Change, And The Practice’S Sharp Decline, Jesse Rifkin

Honors Scholar Theses

Do newspapers tend to mirror the political preferences of their primary readership? In other words, do they actually matter? Do they matter only if they mirror public opinion? What if they lead public opinion? Why do some newspaper endorsements change over time? Why are a growing number of newspapers discontinuing presidential endorsements – will they soon be a thing of the past? This paper aims to answer those questions and more.

A few trends stand out, three in particular.

1) The long history of newspapers endorsing presidential candidates may be coming to an end. In recent years many have discontinued …

Catching Companies Who Refuse To Go Green Red-Handed, Wylee Mcgreevy Dec 2013

Catching Companies Who Refuse To Go Green Red-Handed, Wylee Mcgreevy

Honors Theses

Recycling, planting trees, and bringing your own bags to the grocery store are some of the activities people regularly think about when it comes to sustainability. In the grand scheme of life, how much difference can one person make? What if there were stricter standards for corporations which accounted for their emission of pollutants? Environmental Accounting is a branch of accounting that is progressively gaining popularity and has the potential to redefine the standards of sustainability for companies. With integration of past proposals for a carbon tax and a cap and trade system, a new proposal could be formed that …

Mortality In The Ocean - With Lessons From Hydrothermal Vents Off Kueishan Tao, Ne-Taiwan, Hans-Uwe Dahms, Jiang-Shiou Hwang Dec 2013

Mortality In The Ocean - With Lessons From Hydrothermal Vents Off Kueishan Tao, Ne-Taiwan, Hans-Uwe Dahms, Jiang-Shiou Hwang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

There is evidence of plankton mortality and extinction at various temporal and spatial scales induced by man-made pollution, or by natural causes (ageing, competition, predation, diseases, natural pollution). If mortalities take place at large scale they might become of environmental concern and may impact other biotic compartments including fisheries substantially. Such mortalities are a consistent phenomenon at time scales from geological mass extinctions to regularly occurring HABs, that appear to be increasing on a global basis. Several mass mortalities might have escaped our notice for their patchy and erratic occurrences. This also holds for mortalities caused by hydrothermal vents (HVs) …

The Legacy Of 1940: The Election Of Franklin D. Roosevelt To A Third Term, Kyle Lindsay Dec 2013

The Legacy Of 1940: The Election Of Franklin D. Roosevelt To A Third Term, Kyle Lindsay

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

For my honors history thesis, I examined the decision of Franklin D. Roosevelt to run for a third presidential term in 1940. This decision was an important one, for no other President in American history had been elected to a third term. My research indicated that despite his personal wishes, Roosevelt believed that he had to run again in 1940 to guide the United States during the uncertain period leading up to World War II.

‘The People’S Own Mp’: How The 1981 Hunger Strike Changed The Republican Movement In Ireland, Ryan Fink Dec 2013

‘The People’S Own Mp’: How The 1981 Hunger Strike Changed The Republican Movement In Ireland, Ryan Fink

History & Classics Undergraduate Theses

The 20th century was a period of turmoil for the people of Ireland. After fighting for independence in the first quarter of the century, Ireland was partitioned into two separate entities, the Irish-controlled Republic of Ireland in the South and the British-controlled Northern Ireland in the Northeast. The middle half of the century saw bloody violence and sectarian fighting between the Irish Republican Army (IRA) and the various Unionist paramilitary forces in Northern Ireland. This paper looks at the period from 1970 to 2000, and evaluates how and why the bloody sectarian conflict shifted into a partially more peaceful political …

An Effective Illumination Compensation Method For Face Recognition, Yea-Shuan Huang, Chu-Yung Li Dec 2013

An Effective Illumination Compensation Method For Face Recognition, Yea-Shuan Huang, Chu-Yung Li

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Face recognition is very useful in many applications, such as safety and surveillance, intelligent robot, and computer login. The reliability and accuracy of such systems will be influenced by the variation of background illumination. Therefore, how to accomplish an effective illumination compensation method for human face image is a key technology for face recognition. Our study uses several computer vision techniques to develop an illumination compensation algorithm to processing the single channel (such as grey level or illumination intensity) face image. The proposed method mainly consists of three processing modules: (1) Homomorphic Filtering, (2) Ratio Image Generation, and (3) Anisotropic …

Seed Bank Study Of The Effect Of Land Use On Vegetation Diversity In Carolina Bays, Maeve Snyder Dec 2013

Seed Bank Study Of The Effect Of Land Use On Vegetation Diversity In Carolina Bays, Maeve Snyder

Honors Theses

The intent of my honors thesis is to conduct a comparative analysis of seed banks between Carolina bays of high and low human impact. My study will use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to characterize types of land use within Carolina bays and in 250-m buffer zones. Representative bays from high-impact and low-impact classifications will be chosen as study sites, and seed bank samples will be collected and germinated. While it is beyond the scope of my study to identify a mechanism by which it occurs, I will investigate the presence of a relationship between land use and bay vegetation biodiversity.

Shark Community Structure In Winyah Bay, Sc, Keenen Fryman Dec 2013

Shark Community Structure In Winyah Bay, Sc, Keenen Fryman

Honors Theses

Assessments of local shark stocks are vital to understand population trends and their causes. Local data are incomplete despite many studies over many years. The first published study listed all of the shark species found off the coast of SC (Bearden 1965). Following Bearden's work, Schwartz (2003) used a 30 year data set to describe the elasmobranchs found in NC and SC. In 2004, a survey of coastal habitats in southeast NC helped to identify the nursery habitat for C. acronotus, C. brevipinna, C. limbatus, C. obscurus, C. plumbeus, M. canis, R. terraenovae, S. tiburo, and S. lewini (Thorpe et …
