Claiming Space, Redefining Politics: Urban Protest And Grassroots Power In Bolivia, Carwil Bjork-James Jan 2013

Claiming Space, Redefining Politics: Urban Protest And Grassroots Power In Bolivia, Carwil Bjork-James

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation analyzes the role of space-claiming protests by primarily left grassroots social movements in Bolivia's current political transformation. Space claiming includes mass protests that physically control or symbolically claim urban space through occupations of plazas and roads, sit-ins, blockades, and other measures. As a theoretical construct, space claiming brings together tactics of collective action and meanings of public spaces, and looks at the consequences of their interaction. This dissertation is based on ethnographic engagement and oral interviews with protest participants and their state interlocutors during twelve months of fieldwork and archival research. By using detailed ethnographic evidence--of social life …

It then provides detailed and specific strategies for teaching millennial …

The Moral Significance Of Economic Life, Andrzej Rapaczynski Jan 2013

The Moral Significance Of Economic Life, Andrzej Rapaczynski

Faculty Scholarship

Much of the modern perception of the role of economic production in human life – whether on the Left or on the Right of the political spectrum – views it as an inferior, instrumental activity oriented toward self-preservation, self-interest, or profit, and thus as essentially distinct from the truly human action concerned with moral values, justice, and various forms of self-fulfillment. This widely shared worldview is rooted, on the one hand, in the Aristotelian tradition that sees labor as a badge of slavery, and freedom as lying in the domain of politics and pure (not technical) knowledge, and, on the …

Procedural Hurdles And Thwarted Efficiency: Immigration Relief In Wage And Hour Collective Actions, Llezlie Green Jan 2013

Procedural Hurdles And Thwarted Efficiency: Immigration Relief In Wage And Hour Collective Actions, Llezlie Green

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Wage theft and its frequent exploitative companions, trafficking and involuntary servitude, have seen substantial increases in recent years. Low-wage workers often bear the brunt of these practices. Vulnerable populations, such as immigrant workers, and more specifically, undocumented workers, experience wage theft and other forms of workplace-related exploitation at alarmingly high rates. Individual adjudications of these claims are neither efficient nor, in many cases, feasible, given attorneys’ aversion to shouldering the risks and costs in cases that may yield only limited attorneys’ fees. The collective adjudication of Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) claims, however, largely resolves these challenges and provides an …

The Jury As Constitutional Identity, Andrew Ferguson Jan 2013

The Jury As Constitutional Identity, Andrew Ferguson

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This article seeks to reframe how citizens see jury service in America. Juries once existed at the core of American constitutional identity. At the founding of the country, jury service and voting were twin political rights, equal in stature and importance. Some founders even considered the jury more important than the right to vote as a means to ensure a robust democratic system. During the battles for racial equality (before and after the Reconstruction Amendments) and gender equality (before and after the Nineteenth Amendment), advocates explicitly linked demands for voting and jury service as symbols of political equality. Americans fought, …

The 'Silent Arrival': The Second Wave Of The Great Migration And Its Affects On Black New York, 1940-1950, Carla J. Dubose-Simons

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation explores black New York in the 1940s with an emphasis on the demographic, economic, and social effects of the World War II migration of blacks to the city. Using census data this study examines the basic characteristics of the migrants moving to New York during the war years; characteristics such as state of origin, age, and sex. It also maps where these migrants settled in the city revealing new areas of black settlement outside of Harlem, the largest black neighborhood in the city.

Black New Yorkers, looking to escape the high rents, dilapidated living conditions, and increasing crime …

"Banding Together": Biosociality, Weight Loss Surgery, And Neoliberal Discourses Around Obesity, Zoë C. Meleo-Erwin

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Drawing on post-structuralist and feminist theories about the relationship between knowledge, power, bodies, health, and subjectification, in this dissertation I critically analyze the experience of individuals who were medically diagnosed as obese or morbidly obese and underwent bariatric (weight loss) surgery. During the late 20th and early 21st century, the United States saw an explosion of discourse and anxiety about rising population body weights. In national public health addresses, obesity was commonly referred to as a threat to the nation state. During this same time period, anti-fat stigma significantly increased and the number of bariatric surgeries performed skyrocketed. I argue …

Le Bâillonnement De La Révolution Haïtienne Dans L’Imaginaire Occidental À Travers Des Textes Fictionnels Des Dix-Neuvième Et Vingtième Siècles, Claudy Delné

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Inspired by the study of Western historiography and the processes by which silence enters into history in Michel-Rolph Trouillot’s seminal work, Silencing the Past: Power and the Production of History, this dissertation demonstrates that fiction can be used both for silencing the past and for rewriting it. This study focuses on seven novels, one short story and two plays published between 1798 to 2007: Adonis ou le Bon Nègre by Jean-Baptiste Picquenard, L’Habitation de Saint-Domingue ou L’Insurrection by Charles de Rémusat, Benito Cereno by Herman Melville, Les Nuits chaudes du Cap-Français by Hugues Rebell, Drums at Dusk by Arna …

The Advantage Of Mapping Gentrification With Geographic Information Systems: Comparisons Of Three New York City Neighborhoods, 1980 - Present, Chung Chang

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation adopts a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) approach to map gentrification. It explores the combination of GIS and publicly available data as a new research tool to investigate gentrification at the Census Tract level within three New York City neighborhoods (Park Slope, Williamsburg and the Lower East Side). Results are compared to contemporary gentrification studies to argue the advantages of utilizing this methodology.

Since the term “gentrification” was coined (Glass, 1964), scholars with different research methods have produced a considerable body of literature. However, debates on causes and effects persist. While disciplinary differences could be the reasons for disagreement, …

Taking A Break From Acrimony: The Feminist Method Of Ann Scales, Katherine M. Franke Jan 2013

Taking A Break From Acrimony: The Feminist Method Of Ann Scales, Katherine M. Franke

Faculty Scholarship

In this Essay, written as part of a symposium honoring the work of Professor Ann Scales, Professor Katherine Franke explores how Professor Scales may have approached the cutting edge problem of same-sex couples divorcing. Professor Scales's work evidenced a deep commitment to the twin projects of recognizing structural gender disadvantage suffered by women and the tyranny of gender stereotypes. This Essay speculates that Professor Scales's feminist commitments would be unsettled by the application to divorcing same-sex couples of rules and norms of divorce forged in the heterosexual context where gender inequality set the parameters of justice. Indeed, Franke speculates that …

Boronic Acids As Penicillinase Inhibitors, Juan F. Barquero Jan 2013

Boronic Acids As Penicillinase Inhibitors, Juan F. Barquero

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

β-lactamases are enzymes produced by bacteria resistant to antibiotics. A common feature on beta lactam antibiotics is the beta-lactam ring. β-lactamases hydrolyze the β-lactam ring leaving the antibiotic inoperative. The advent of bacteria that are resistant to β-lactams has impelled researchers to find inhibitors for β-lactamases that mimic the lactam ring but do not get hydrolyzed. One group of these new antibiotics is the aryl boronic acids. The main reason the boronic acids have been chosen as potential drugs is their lack of toxicity and their easy excretion in the urine. One of the most important structural features of these …

Owning Justice And Reckoning With Its Complexity, Diane Orentlicher Jan 2013

Owning Justice And Reckoning With Its Complexity, Diane Orentlicher

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

A series of developments, both doctrinal and political, seem to signify a retreat from earlier innovations in the law and practice of international justice. On closer examination, however, recent developments in international justice cannot be reduced to a single trend line. Even as various actors and processes continue to work out the ground rules for exercising jurisdiction in respect of human rights violations that international law condemns as criminal, and as international and national courts work through the inherently challenging project of redressing mass atrocities, states have increasingly internalized, owned and acted on the principle that they should ensure accountability …

Sensory Exploitation And Condition Indication May Explain Red Pelvic Spines In The Brook Stickleback Culaea Inconstans, Andrew Hodgson Jan 2013

Sensory Exploitation And Condition Indication May Explain Red Pelvic Spines In The Brook Stickleback Culaea Inconstans, Andrew Hodgson

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"Background: Sensory bias models of the evolution of sexually selected traits predict that trait preferences evolve in a nonsexual context such as prey selection. Indicator models predict that sexually selected traits indicate mate condition. I investigated the potential for sensory exploitation and condition indication models to explain the evolution of what appears to be a recently evolved sexually selected trait. Question: Did red pelvic spine coloration in male Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge (TNWR) brook stickleback (Cu!aea inconstans) evolve to exploit a preexisting sensory bias for red prey, thus helping males draw females to the nest? Or, did it evolve as …

Characteristics Essential To A Career In Dental Hygiene, Andrea J. Bennett

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

With the increase in the number of dental hygiene schools, and decline in graduating dentists, the potential for an excess supply of dental hygienists could result in increased difficulty for dental hygienists to gain employment. Using a quantitative research design in the form of a cross sectional, Likert style survey, this study targeted desirable employability characteristics of dental hygienists by dental employers. The sample was randomly selected from five regions in the US. Each participant was sent three emails containing an introductory letter, consent form, and survey link with a response rate of 5.70% (N=53). Data was analyzed using frequency …

Detection And Characterization Of Antibiotic Resistance Plasmids In Cheney Biosolids, Gaayathiri Paramasivam Jan 2013

Detection And Characterization Of Antibiotic Resistance Plasmids In Cheney Biosolids, Gaayathiri Paramasivam

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"Biosolids are organic matter produced at the end of sewage treatment process. It has been shown that during sewage treatment, resistant bacteria are selected because of the presence of antibiotics and their byproducts. These resistant bacteria are more likely to transfer resistance genes to other bacteria. In the current study, we examined Cheney biosolids for the presence of drug resistant bacteria and the role of these bacteria in transfer of resistance genes to others. We screened 100 bacteria for drug resistance and found that 68% of the isolates were resistant to two or more drugs tested. Plasmids were separated from …

"The purpose of this study was to examine 1) if students felt servant leadership was present within the Approved Clinical Instructors (ACI's) of the programs surveyed; and 2) if those students who perceived their ACI's to be servant leaders also had more student satisfaction, and greater student success. Based on the literature search conducted, there was little to no research found on servant leadership in athletic training clinical education, especially from the athletic training students' perspective. Responses were obtained from 11 of the 27 Athletic Training Education Programs that were randomly selected for participation. Bivariate correlations were run on the …

Reality And Imagination: The Authorial Decisions Of May Welland Archer And Emma Woodhouse, Melinda R. Vetter Jan 2013

Reality And Imagination: The Authorial Decisions Of May Welland Archer And Emma Woodhouse, Melinda R. Vetter

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

The ideal woman of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries was the "Angel in the House"-a woman who was sweet, shy, and modest. She lived to please the men in her life. She was also the child-woman who was sheltered from the knowledge of the world because it would be too painful and heavy for her fragile shoulders to endure. Edith Wharton, in The Age of Innocence, and Jane Austen, in Emma challenge this ideal picture by creating their respective heroines, May and Emma, to be the exact opposite of it. Though May constantly acts like the ideal woman mentioned earlier, …

Punitive Preventive Justice: A Critique, Bernard E. Harcourt Jan 2013

Punitive Preventive Justice: A Critique, Bernard E. Harcourt

Faculty Scholarship

This chapter identifies the origins of contemporary preventive endeavour in the work of the RAND Corporation in America, which developed highly technical studies of crime prevention based upon systems analysis. It suggests that RAND promoted a decidedly punitive style of prevention based upon policing and punishment that is replicated in modern ‘punitive preventive measures’. It criticizes these measures, emphasizing the perils they pose and the weakness of their empirical foundations. Most worryingly, these measures typically claim an apolitical, neutral emphasis on efficiency that fails to engage with the political values underlying them. In so doing, it tends to displace much …
