Art And Symbolism: The Technique Of Applying Hidden Meaning And Communicating Specific Ideas Through Art, Andrea C. Macbean
Art And Symbolism: The Technique Of Applying Hidden Meaning And Communicating Specific Ideas Through Art, Andrea C. Macbean
Senior Honors Theses
Symbolism is an artistic style frequently used in the arts. Through the course of art history, it was its own artistic movement as well. The incorporation of specific symbols, shapes, colors, or identifiable images communicates to the viewer an intended message or statement. Frequently, symbolism appears to be hidden or initially unperceived by the intended audience. In some works, symbolism is so abstract that it needs explanation or clarification to be understood completely by the viewer. This thesis will analyze a few techniques of symbolism that can be incorporated in a work of art to communicate truth, entice thought, point …

The Future Of Sino-American Relations In The Asia-Pacific Realm, Xieyao Chen
Senior Honors Theses
Since the turn of the twenty-first century, the international community has been confronted with numerous challenges and power shifts. On the one hand, upheavals in the Middle East greatly challenge world peace. On the other hand, a rapidly developing Asia is gradually changing the international structure. Many scholars in the United States worry that America’s liberty and security are challenged by all kinds of political, cultural, and strategic changes. Both domestic and foreign policies are facing hard choices of what should be done next.
This paper focuses on the question of what appropriate foreign policy the U.S. should pursue in …

USF Patents
The present invention is directed to the fabrication of thin aluminum anode batteries using a highly reproducible process that enables high volume manufacturing of the galvanic cells. In the present invention, semiconductor fabrication methods are used to fabricate aluminum galvanic cells, wherein a catalytic material to be used as the cathode is deposited on a substrate and an insulating spacing material is deposited on the cathode and patterned using photolithography. The spacing material can either be used as a sacrificial layer to expose the electrodes or serve as a support for one of the electrodes. Similarly, the aluminum anode may …

Carbon Nanotube Anchor For Mass Spectrometer, Rudiger Schlaf, Joshua Schumacher
USF Patents
This invention enables a sensitivity enhancement in the detection of molecular compounds. A mass spectrometry analyte support with nanotube anchors are used to concentrate MALDI samples, specifically samples prepared with water-insoluble matrix compounds, on the anchor spot. The surface structure is established through patterned carbon nanotube anchor growth, providing a nucleation center for analyte and reducing sample precipitation on the surrounding MALDI wafer. Also disclosed is a method of creating a mass spectrometry support using patterned metal catalyst to grow carbon nanotubes. The carbon nanotubes enhance nucleation on specific areas of a sample plate to concentrate analyte/matrix deposit during droplet …
Microcavity Raman Sensor And Method Of Use, Nicholas Djeu, Andreas Muller
Microcavity Raman Sensor And Method Of Use, Nicholas Djeu, Andreas Muller
USF Patents
In accordance with the present invention, an ultra-sensitive Raman chemical sensor is provided that is based on an enhanced spontaneous emission as a result of cavity quantum electrodynamic effects. More specifically, the sensor in accordance with the present invention makes use of a double resonance of a microcavity with both the excitation laser frequency and the Raman frequency. As such, the Raman shift corresponds to an integer times the free spectral range of the microcavity. Because the Raman frequency directly depends on the excitation laser's frequency, the fulfillment of the resonance condition for the excitation laser frequency guarantees that resonance …

A prediction method that estimates the real-time position of a mobile device based on previously observed data is provided. The present invention can be used in real-time navigation, including providing real-time alerts of an upcoming destination and notifications of emergency events in close geographic proximity. The prediction method utilizes neural networks and/or functions generated using genetic algorithms in estimating the mobile device's real-time position. The prediction method provides reliable Location-Based Services (LBS) in events where traditional positioning technologies become unreliable. It is also seamless, as the user remains unaware of any interruption in accessing the positioning technology.

Heat waves can be lethal and routinely prompt public warnings about the dangers of heat. With climate change, extreme heat events will become more frequent and intense. However, little is known about public awareness of heat warnings or behaviors during hot weather. Awareness of heat warnings, prevention behaviors, and air conditioning (AC) prevalence and use in New York City were assessed using quantitative and qualitative methods. A random sample telephone survey was conducted in September 2011 among 719 adults and follow-up focus groups were held in winter 2012 among seniors and potential senior caregivers. During summer 2011, 79 % of …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
In the woods south of Wilmington, men in blue uniforms moved forward in a loose skirmish line. They were probing, trying to find General Hoke's last line of defense. Brig. General Charles Paine sent the men forward to develop the enemy. But in the pine thicket ahead, in a thin, ragged line, the bedraggled rebel troops likely had more to fear than bullets as those skirmishers probed and prodded on a February day in 1865. [excerpt]

Microgrid Development Using A Grid Tie Inverter, Hartono Budi Santoso, Budiyanto Budiyanto
Makara Journal of Technology
The use of renewable energy sources (RES), especially photovoltaic (PV), to meet the demand of electrical energy has been getting a great deal of attention as an alternative solution to electrical energy deficit problems. RES are being applied in power systems in a variety of configurations including microgrid systems. One of the characteristics of a microgrid is capability to supplying power to grid when there is an excess power to supply local load. This research examines the chances of saving power consumption from grid using power converters grid tie inverter (GTI) in a microgrid configuration. The test is done by …

Functional Analysis Of The Acetic Acid Resistance (Aar) Gene Cluster In Acetobacter Aceti Strain 1023, Elwood Mullins, T Joseph Kappock
Department of Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Vinegar production requires acetic acid bacteria that produce, tolerate, and conserve high levels of acetic acid. When ethanol is depleted, aerobic acetate overoxidation to carbon dioxide ensues. The resulting diauxic growth pattern has two logarithmic growth phases, the first associated with ethanol oxidation and the second associated with acetate overoxidation. The vinegar factory isolate Acetobacter aceti strain 1023 has a long intermediate stationary phase that persists at elevated acetic acid levels. Strain 1023 conserves acetic acid despite possessing a complete set of citric acid cycle (CAC) enzymes, including succinyl-CoA:acetate CoA-transferase (SCACT), the product of the acetic acid resistance (aar …

Veritas Observations Of The Microquasar Cygnus X-3, P. T. Reynolds, Et Al
Physical Sciences Publications
We report results from TeV gamma-ray observations of the microquasar Cygnus X-3. The observations were made with the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) over a time period from 2007 June 11 to 2011 November 28. VERITAS is most sensitive to gamma rays at energies between 85 GeV and 30 TeV. The effective exposure time amounts to a total of about 44 hr, with the observations covering six distinct radio/X-ray states of the object. No significant TeV gamma-ray emission was detected in any of the states, nor with all observations combined. The lack of a positive signal, especially …
