Family Affairs Newsletter 2013-10-14, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Winners, Losers, Workers, Slackers: Studies Examining The Effort-Related Motivational Symptoms Of Depression Using The Progressive Ratio / Chow Feeding Choice Procedure, Patrick A. Randall Oct 2013

Winners, Losers, Workers, Slackers: Studies Examining The Effort-Related Motivational Symptoms Of Depression Using The Progressive Ratio / Chow Feeding Choice Procedure, Patrick A. Randall

Doctoral Dissertations

Organisms frequently make effort-related decisions in order to overcome obstacles separating them from significant stimuli. Effort-related behavioral processes are an important aspect of motivation, and effort-related motivational dysfunctions can be critical symptoms of depression and other disorders. The current work explores the use of a novel operant task, the concurrent progressive ratio (PROG)/chow feeding choice task. Rats tested on the PROG/chow feeding task are given a choice between lever pressing on a progressive ratio for preferred food pellets vs. approaching and consuming the less preferred lab chow that is concurrently available.

Who's To Blame? Client Problems And The Causal Attributions Made By Counselors-In- Training, Joseph M. Williams, Arie T. Greenleaf, David K. Duys

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

The researchers examined the relationship between cognitive complexity, attribution styles, and demographic variables of 86 counselors-in-training concerning the cause of and solution to clients’ problems. A significant relationship was found between counselors’ moral attribution styles and cognitive complexity levels. Differences were found in general preferences for specific attribution styles for the counselors studied as well as by training level. Implications of the findings for counselor preparation and training are discussed.

Self-Efficacy Of Beginning Counselors To Counsel Clients In Crisis, Cheryl Sawyer, Michelle L. Peters, Jana Willis Oct 2013

Self-Efficacy Of Beginning Counselors To Counsel Clients In Crisis, Cheryl Sawyer, Michelle L. Peters, Jana Willis

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Crisis situations are becoming more and more prevalent in our society today, and as a result, counselors should be aware of the overarching effects of various crisis situations and how they can affect their clients. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of preparedness on beginning counselors’ levels of self-efficacy and their perceived abilities to handle crisis interventions. A purposeful sample of master’s-level counseling students, enrolled in a Crises Intervention Preparation course for Mental Health Responders, were administered the Counselor’s Self-Efficacy Scale to assess their levels of self-efficacy. Findings indicated that counseling students who studied theoretical strategies …

Towards A Growth Mindset In Assessment, Geoff N. Masters Oct 2013

Towards A Growth Mindset In Assessment, Geoff N. Masters

Assessment and Reporting

The approaches we take to assessing learning, the kinds of tasks we assign and the way we report success or failure at school send powerful messages to students not only about their own learning, but also about the nature of learning itself. Assessment and reporting processes shape student, parent and community beliefs about learning – sometimes in unintended ways.

This essay describes three general approaches to evaluating and providing feedback on the outcomes of learning. Each approach is based on a particular way of thinking about what it means to learn successfully, and each has implications for how students view …

Exploring The Multicultural Competence Of School Counselors, Fallon K. Dodson Oct 2013

Exploring The Multicultural Competence Of School Counselors, Fallon K. Dodson

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

The purpose of this study was to explore the self-perceived multicultural competence of school counselors. Forty-one school counselors out of the 510 school counselors who were current members of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) completed both survey instruments: a demographic survey and the Multicultural Counseling Knowledge and Awareness Scale (MCKAS). The results of the study indicated that one of eight demographic variables demonstrated significance in relation to multicultural competence. Recommendations for future research included using a larger, ethnically diverse sample; including all school counselors in the state of Virginia; developing a survey instrument that included more aspects of multiculturalism …

Analysis Of Prescribed Gender Roles Through The Use Of Dissociative Identity Disorder In Contemporary Film, Christian Ruiz Oct 2013

Analysis Of Prescribed Gender Roles Through The Use Of Dissociative Identity Disorder In Contemporary Film, Christian Ruiz

UROP Posters

Art is considered both a mirror to reality and a means of critiquing society. This is especially evident through contemporary filmmakers’ use of dissociative identity disorder (DID) in psychological thrillers from the 1990s to 2012, which is a time frame in which both film and society were notably different from those of the previous decades and in which there has not been extensive cultural study regarding DID. Through the presence of multiple selves, which is characteristic of DID, filmmakers illustrate their main characters’ attempts to resolve a stressful, or traumatic, situation. This study is an examination of the ways in …

Prototype Modeling Vs. Item Response Theory – A Paradigm Shift For Measurement Professionals, Joseph Yeager, Linda Sommer, Juliette Faughnan, Christophe Geerkens Oct 2013

Prototype Modeling Vs. Item Response Theory – A Paradigm Shift For Measurement Professionals, Joseph Yeager, Linda Sommer, Juliette Faughnan, Christophe Geerkens

The Qualitative Report

In science, the usual research mode is to discover cause - and - effect mechanisms operating behind superficial reality. Aviation, for example, uses prototype modeling to develop improved aircraft from one generation to the next. In stark contrast to prototype modeling’s search for causal mechanisms, assessment technologies remain dominated by probability strategies — which is why psychological assessment lags behind the hard sciences. A major difference in results exists between inferences produced through item response theory versus the cause - effect prototyping strategies of aerospace and other techno - savvy industries. Parallel to aerospace strategies, systems analysis of language, using …

Playing Set® To Discover Qualitative Data Analysis, Jean Scandlyn, Sarah Hautzinger Oct 2013

Playing Set® To Discover Qualitative Data Analysis, Jean Scandlyn, Sarah Hautzinger

The Qualitative Report

This article describes the use of an experiential classroom exercise using the card game Set® to introduce concepts related to qualitative approaches to research design and analysis, particularly those based in an interpretive framework. The multiple components of the game, which centers on visual pattern recognition, parallel the “organic” complexity of ethnographic investigation and demonstrate how strong interpretations can be supported with qualitative evidence. The first author adapted the exercise, originally developed by the second author for teaching undergraduate anthropology students, for use in workshops teaching qualitative research to mid - career professionals working on health - related projects in …

Reducing Multi-Sensor Data To A Single Time Course That Reveals Experimental Effects, Aaron Schurger, Sebastien Marti, Stanislas Dehaene Oct 2013

Reducing Multi-Sensor Data To A Single Time Course That Reveals Experimental Effects, Aaron Schurger, Sebastien Marti, Stanislas Dehaene

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

Background: Multi-sensor technologies such as EEG, MEG, and ECoG result in high-dimensional data sets. Given the high temporal resolution of such techniques, scientific questions very often focus on the time-course of an experimental effect. In many studies, researchers focus on a single sensor or the average over a subset of sensors covering a “region of interest” (ROI). However, single-sensor or ROI analyses ignore the fact that the spatial focus of activity is constantly changing, and fail to make full use of the information distributed over the sensor array.

Methods: We describe a technique that exploits the optimality and …

Relationships Between Motivation, Self-Efficacy, Mindsets, Attributions, And Learning Strategies: An Exploratory Study, Christopher Lackey Oct 2013

Relationships Between Motivation, Self-Efficacy, Mindsets, Attributions, And Learning Strategies: An Exploratory Study, Christopher Lackey

Theses and Dissertations

Motivation, self-efficacy, beliefs about intelligence, and attributions about academic performance all play important roles in student success. To determine the relationships between these factors and the influence of demographics upon them, an online quantitative survey was taken of college students measuring their self-perceptions of these factors. The survey was comprised of items from three existing surveys: the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ), the Implicit Theories of Intelligence Scale, and the Revised Causal Dimension Scale. First- and second-year students, generally at the highest risk of attrition, were targeted in order to explore whether these factors could shed light on persistence. …

K-12 Design Education, Creativity, And The Corporate World, Robin Vande Zande Oct 2013

K-12 Design Education, Creativity, And The Corporate World, Robin Vande Zande

Learn X Design Conference Series

Creativity has been described by a number of researchers as a 21st Century Skill and a way for students to succeed as learners, workers, and citizens. The corporate sector has had tremendous impact on what happens in American education for years and continues to do so. Teachers should understand that it is often beneficial to speak the language of business and cite corporate authors to offer validation for what they teach as being essential for creative skills. An effective way for teachers to teach creativity in the context of business is through design education, a natural integrator of various subject …

Buenos Aires Dreaming: Chronopolitics, Memory And Dystopia In La Sonámbula, Mariano Paz Oct 2013

Buenos Aires Dreaming: Chronopolitics, Memory And Dystopia In La Sonámbula, Mariano Paz

Alambique. Revista académica de ciencia ficción y fantasía / Jornal acadêmico de ficção científica e fantasía

The Argentine film La Sonámbula (dir. Fernando Spiner, 1998) is one of the most renowned examples of local science fiction cinema. The film portrays a post-apocalyptic, totalitarian Argentina in the year 2010 (the near future at the time of the film’s release). Since this dystopian scenario never materialized, it might be assumed the concerns and anxieties about Argentine politics that the film conveys might have been exaggerated or unfounded. Drawing on the concept of chronopolitcs, as defined by Paul Virilio, and on the theoretical framework proposed by Paul Ricoeur related to the study of memory and forgetting, this paper discusses …
