Flight Energy Management Training: Promoting Safety And Efficiency, Juan R. Merkt Oct 2013

Flight Energy Management Training: Promoting Safety And Efficiency, Juan R. Merkt

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Poor aircraft energy management can lead to unsafe and inefficient operations. Despite their impact on safety and economy, energy management skills are not adequately taught or evaluated in civilian pilot training. This paper 1) addresses the need for better energy management training, 2) provides a conceptual and pedagogical framework for later curriculum development, and 3) suggests key attributes of an effective training program. To make the case, the study uses energy management to link safety and efficiency. It then synthesizes energy principles across disciplines and illustrates how such principles, once simplified, become powerful instructional tools. Finally, it suggests that an …

The Integration Of Research And Practice In Clinical Psychology, Timothy Razza Oct 2013

The Integration Of Research And Practice In Clinical Psychology, Timothy Razza

Quadrivium: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship

One of the most significant debates in clinical psychology in the past decade has been focused on evidence-based practices (Berke, Rozell, Hogan, Norcross, & Karpiak, 2011). This debate occurs in clinic, research, academic, and administrative settings and currently represents a primary dimension of the training of future clinical psychologists. Melchert (2007) states that the intensity of this disagreement interferes with the recognition that scientific credibility has had on the overall success of professional psychology, as well as the recognition that the growth of psychology in general has been largely based on developments in professional psychology.

The Impact Of Having Fewer Accounting Firms In The Auditing Profession–A Work In Process, Benjamin V. Titera, Dr. Jeff Wilks Oct 2013

The Impact Of Having Fewer Accounting Firms In The Auditing Profession–A Work In Process, Benjamin V. Titera, Dr. Jeff Wilks

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As time moves on, the number of accounting firms has decreased and the lengths of the remaining firm’s names have increased. Firms such as Arthur Anderson, Coopers & Lybrand, Price Waterhouse, Touche Ross, KPMG, Ernst & Young, Peat Marwick International, Klynveld Main Goerdeler, and Laventhol & Horwath have either evolved or disappeared. Ten years ago, it was the Big 8, by 1993, it was the Big 6, in 2001, it was the Big 5, and today it is the Big 4.

The Art Of Profitable Service Recovery: A Strategic Model, Aaron R. Brough, Dr. Kristen Detienne Oct 2013

The Art Of Profitable Service Recovery: A Strategic Model, Aaron R. Brough, Dr. Kristen Detienne

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Disappointed customers are less likely to continue doing business with a firm and more likely to drive other customers away. Obviously, such actions can be costly for companies. Service recovery may be defined as any actions a company undertakes in order to mitigate the damaging effects of service failure. Successful service recovery restores, and occasiona lly elevates, prefailure levels of customer satisfaction and loyalty. The following two pages summarize an honors thesis that shows how companies can strategically design a profitable service recovery system. Although service recovery has been shown to increase profits in many instances, other research argues that …

An Empirical Experiment On Service Recovery Design, Marc Preston Bernhisel, Dr. Kristie Seawright Oct 2013

An Empirical Experiment On Service Recovery Design, Marc Preston Bernhisel, Dr. Kristie Seawright

Journal of Undergraduate Research

“Mistakes are an unavoidable feature of all human endeavor and thus also of service delivery” (Boshoff, 1997, p.110). Regardless of the efforts and precautions to avoid breakdowns and errors in service delivery, failures are bound to occur. Although failures will always occur, firms can avoid the cost of losing customers through service recovery. Zemke and Bell (1990) defined service recovery as a “thought-out, planned process for returning aggrieved customers to a state of satisfaction with the firm after a service or product has failed to live up to expectations” (p. 43).

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The United States is currently facing a perceived crisis in our financial reporting system. In recent years, a large increase in the number of financial frauds reported and subsequent business failures have led to concerns in both the public and private sectors as to the legitimacy of corporations published financial statements. These concerns have led to new regulations from regulatory agencies and oversight boards as well as legislation from the US Congress. The substance of these new regulations and legislation focus on the need for management, investors, regulators and auditors to become more involved in preventing and detecting financial statement …

Nonverbal Cues Auditors Can Use To Detect Deceit, Brandon B. Buhler, Dr. W. Jeff Wilks

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Over the past few years, investors in Corporate America have witnessed a rise in financial fraud. With escalating frauds in the business world, investors are more determined to gain assurance from the auditors of the financial statements. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 also increased legislative pressures on auditors to detect fraud.

Siblings Of Children With Down Syndrome: Perceptions Of Their Experiences, Allison Ash Malnar, Dr. Barbara Mandleco Oct 2013

Siblings Of Children With Down Syndrome: Perceptions Of Their Experiences, Allison Ash Malnar, Dr. Barbara Mandleco

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Approximately 350,000 families in the United States are affected by Down syndrome, and the vast majority of these families include one or more nondisabled children (National Down Syndrome Society, 1999). Because of this, many researchers are interested in how this disability affects the family. Marsha Van Riper (1999) writes, “…While the birth of a child with Down syndrome involves a ‘change of plans’ for families, it does not have to be a negative experience. In fact for many families, it is a positive, growth producing experience” (p. 3). While much research in the past concerned interviewing parents of children with …

Patients’ Perceptions Of Mechanical Ventilation: What Hurt And What Helped?, Lisa M. Ewert, Dr. Renea Beckstrand

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When a patient is on a ventilator, it’s the critical care nurse’s role to recognize and respond to any factors that cause the patient distress. Anytime a patient is ill, the illness causes both physiological and emotional stress. However, an acute illness that is severe enough to require mechanical ventilation intensifies the physical and psychological distress with which the patient and their family must cope (1).

Calibrating The Human Instrument: Understanding The Interviewing Experience Of Novice Qualitative Researchers, Margarita S. Peredaryenko, Steven Eric Krauss Oct 2013

Calibrating The Human Instrument: Understanding The Interviewing Experience Of Novice Qualitative Researchers, Margarita S. Peredaryenko, Steven Eric Krauss

The Qualitative Report

Scientific instruments often undergo calibration to ensure that they will produce results that meet or exceed defined criteria within a specified degree of confidence. Such calibration almost always refers to mechanical instruments, those used primarily in the physical sciences. Rarely is the notion of calibration used in relation to the social and human sciences, especially in the context of qualitative research where the human being is the main research instrument. The focus of this study was to explore the experiences of novice human instruments undergoing a process similar to that of calibration. In doing so, we studied how novice qualitative …

Leds Are The Panacea – And Other Fairy Tales, James Duff, Peter Whitty Oct 2013

Leds Are The Panacea – And Other Fairy Tales, James Duff, Peter Whitty

SDAR* Journal of Sustainable Design & Applied Research

Recently, there has been an explosive growth in
the popularity of LED luminaries. Like all markets
experiencing such expansion, it has attracted many
new manufacturers. Some of these have a reputation to uphold, but many do not.As such, it can be difficult for designers to differentiate good quality products from bad quality products.

This paper explores a set of standardised test methods and
performance criteria associated with LED luminaries.
Moreover, it proposes a set of questions for discussion
within the lighting community. These questions
would be used to interrogate manufacturer data
and aid with the determination of product quality.

Increasing The Distance Of An External Focus Of Attention Has Limited Effects On Standing Long Jump Performance, William Westphal, Jared M. Porter Oct 2013

Increasing The Distance Of An External Focus Of Attention Has Limited Effects On Standing Long Jump Performance, William Westphal, Jared M. Porter

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 6(4) : 300-309, 2013. Several previous studied have demonstrated that adopting an external focus of attention (i.e., directing attention towards the result of the movement) improves the performance of a variety of motor skills. The objective of this study was to investigate if increasing the distance of an external focus of attention would further improve standing long jump performance. We hypothesized that as the distance of the external focus increased so would jumping distance. We also hypothesized that when subjects completed jumps in the external focus of attention conditions they would jump significantly further than …

Biomechanical And Proprioceptive Differences During Drop Landings Between Dancers And Non-Dancers, Katie E. Volkerding, Caroline J. Ketcham Ph.D. Oct 2013

Biomechanical And Proprioceptive Differences During Drop Landings Between Dancers And Non-Dancers, Katie E. Volkerding, Caroline J. Ketcham Ph.D.

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 6(4) : 289-299, 2013. The focus of this research was to determine if female dancers have differing kinematic and kinetic characteristics when landing from three heights (0.2, 0.5, and 0.8 m) both with and without vision compared to non-dancers. It was hypothesized that dancers would show differing kinematic and kinetic patterns of control due to their increased proprioceptive awareness. Eight collegiate dancers and seven collegiate controls who were neither dancers nor collegiate jumping athletes volunteered for this study. Sagittal plane lower limb joint angles were measured at 100 Hz prior to landing through stability with …

Attitudes Toward And Preferences For Male And Female Personal Trainers, James P. Fisher, Catherine Platts, Marie Stopforth

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 6(4) : 256-268, 2013. Previous research has considered the perceptions of athletes towards gender of coach and strength and conditioning coach. However, to date there appears little research considering the perceptions of clients towards gender of personal trainer. The purpose of this study was to investigate male and females perceptions of same- or opposite-gender personal trainers. Four hundred and two (male = 201, female = 201) undergraduate University student participants completed an adapted version of the Attitudes of Athletes toward Male versus Female Coaches Questionnaire (AAMFC-Q; 23). A 2 x 2 multivariate analysis of variance …
