The Refusal Speech Acts Of Two Generations Of Korean Women : Mother-In-Law And Daughter-In-Law In Interaction, Saem Han

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The aim of this study is to analyze and interpretate the refusal speech acts of two generations of Korean women: mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law. To be specific, it examines if daughters-in-law’s use of strategies were dependent on the age difference/ hierarchies and to see if there was any difference in the type of strategies used by daughters-in-law depending on whether mothers-in-law have social power or not. The data were collected from three soap operas. Compared with previous data collection methods, such as discourse completion tests or role-plays, this data collection method has advantages for a pragmatics study. The results indicated that …

Examining The Differential Effects Of The Mystery Motivator Intervention Using Chosen Versus Unknown Reinforcers, Natalie Marie Robichaux Jan 2013

Examining The Differential Effects Of The Mystery Motivator Intervention Using Chosen Versus Unknown Reinforcers, Natalie Marie Robichaux

LSU Master's Theses

Disruptive classroom behaviors are among the most prevalent of childhood problems and are associated with reduced instruction time, poor academic achievement, and persistent behavior problems throughout childhood. Class-wide interventions, such as the Mystery Motivator, are an easy and time efficient way to increase the level of classroom management and remediate disruptive behavior patterns. Although the effectiveness of class-wide interventions is well documented, the literature is still inconsistent as to which type of reinforcement is more effective when using behavioral interventions. Some research suggests individuals prefer a choice in reinforcement, while other research suggests choice is just as preferred as reinforcement …

Academic Self-Monitoring In College Students With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Mindy C. Scheithauer Jan 2013

Academic Self-Monitoring In College Students With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Mindy C. Scheithauer

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Self-monitoring is an intervention that can result in behavior change by having individuals observe and record their own behavior. Self-monitoring has received empirical support in changing Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) related behaviors in children, but there is scarce research regarding self-monitoring with adults with ADHD. The current study implemented a self-monitoring intervention aimed at improving academic behavior and medication adherence in college students with ADHD. The self-monitoring intervention included study skills training, goal-setting, identification of individualized self-monitoring behavior, and follow-up meetings to discuss progress. The participants were asked to monitor their behavior on a daily basis using an electronic system. Compared …

Suspensory Filaments, Santiago Pineda Jan 2013

Suspensory Filaments, Santiago Pineda

LSU Master's Theses

The interrelationships between vision, desire, and language are the elements that drive my artistic practice. “What is seeing?” “How is seeing related to desire?” These questions are at the base of my interests. I recognize optics as a subset of perception, yet I strive to reform them into interchangeable components. My interest in optics is based on doubt. I’m not interested in optic’s correctness, clinical orientation, or current sophistication, but rather in undermining its limitations. Our culture still struggles to absorb the notion of the sentient being, one example is our acuity of vision being standardized to 20/20. Within my …

An Ecological Analysis Of Us County-Level Suicide Rates : An Application Of Spatial Patterning Models, Chantel Dufrene Chauvin Jan 2013

An Ecological Analysis Of Us County-Level Suicide Rates : An Application Of Spatial Patterning Models, Chantel Dufrene Chauvin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Suicide has been studied sociologically since the late 19th century when theorists like Durkheim ([1897] 1951) found that the spatial patterning of suicides was not random. Looking beyond psychological troubles, suicide studies began to address the social factors that affected suicide rates. Building on the work of early scholars, contemporary studies mainly focus on variations in levels of social integration variables within communities to explain the nature of suicide rates. Many of these contemporary studies, however, only consider one type of social integration, like religion, and how variations in participation affect the suicide rate. To date, no study simultaneously considers …

Psychological Behavior Analysis Using Advanced Signal Processing Techniques For Fmri Data, Charisma Dionne Edwards

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Psychological analysis related to voluntary reciprocal trust games were obtained using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) hyperscanning for 44 pairs of strangers throughout 36 trust games (TG) and 16 control games (CG). Hidden Markov models (HMMs) are proposed to train and classify the fMRI data acquired from these brain regions and extract the essential features of the initial decision of the first player to trust or not trust the second player. These results are evaluated using the different versions of the multifold cross-validation technique and compared to other speech data and other advanced signal processing techniques including linear classification, support …

Generalizabiity And Dependability Of Brief Behavior Rating Scales For Social Skills, Lisa L. Minor Jan 2013

Generalizabiity And Dependability Of Brief Behavior Rating Scales For Social Skills, Lisa L. Minor

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

While there are appropriate tools to progress monitor academics, there is no universally accepted tool to progress monitor social behavior. The current study proposed the development of a series of brief behavior rating scales to correspond to important social skills domains on the Social Skills Rating Scale (Gresham & Elliott, 2008) and to evaluate the resulting psychometric features through generalizability theory. Data was collected in a preschool classroom in a 6 persons by 2 rater by 6-7 items by occasions mixed model design. Data was analyzed series of generalizability and decision studies to investigate sources of variability and to determine …

Temporal Cycles, Sarah Anne Shearer Jan 2013

Temporal Cycles, Sarah Anne Shearer

LSU Master's Theses

Temporal Cycles explores how systems and changes in the human body parallel those in nature. The investigation takes the form of a print installation, which captures the essence of bodily processes. The serial nature of printmaking and the organic world plays an important role as biomorphic forms and hourglass shapes are repeated in numerous renditions that breathe, pulse, expand, wither, ovulate, and transform. Labyrinths of pattern, texture, and color connect the symbolic forms as the installation tracks the evolution of processes in the body, and the forms reveal themselves through their pictorial associations.

Treatment Integrity Failures Matched To Behavioral Function, Joanna Elizabeth Lomas Mevers Jan 2013

Treatment Integrity Failures Matched To Behavioral Function, Joanna Elizabeth Lomas Mevers

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Prior research on treatment integrity has focused on either the lack of measurement of the independent variable (Peterson, Homer & Wonderlich, 1982; Gresham, Gansle & Noel, 1993; Wheeler, Baggett, Fox & Blevins, 2006; McIntyre, Gresham, DiGennaro & Reed, 2007; Sanetti, Gritter & Dobey, 2011) or on methods to increase overall levels of treatment integrity(Witt, Noell, LaFleur & Mortenson, 1997; Noell, Witt, Gilbertson, Ranier & Freeland,1997; Noell et al., 2005). Yet little research has been devoted to understanding the effectiveness of common interventions when those interventions are implemented with less than perfect integrity. The current investigation evaluated the effectiveness of using …

The Idiosyncratic Fantasies Of Bele Bachem : The Life And Work Of Germany's Forgotten Postwar Artist, Lydia Jane Dorsey

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis constitutes the first comprehensive analysis written in English on the life and work of German-born, post-World War II artist, Bele Bachem. By translating and critically analyzing her diverse oeuvre, which spanned both fields of "applied" and "fine" arts, this thesis examines the three stages of the artist’s career: Bachem’s "Poetic Miniatures" and theater set design under the Third Reich (1938-1945), her postwar commercial work after West Germany’s Wirtschaftswunder for Rosenthal Porcelain (1949-1966), and her mature style of narrative fantasy paintings and female portraits completed in the Schwabing bohemian district of Munich (1957-1986). With this thesis, I aim to …

Reciprocal Peer Mentoring : Increasing The Prosocial Behavior Of Socially Neglected Students, Tai A. Collins Jan 2013

Reciprocal Peer Mentoring : Increasing The Prosocial Behavior Of Socially Neglected Students, Tai A. Collins

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Two studies investigated the effectiveness of the Reciprocal Peer Mentoring intervention in improving the prosocial behavior of socially neglected elementary school students as measured by a Direct Behavior Rating filled out by their teachers. Reciprocal Peer Mentoring uses the methodological framework of the Check-In/Check-Out intervention (e.g. Hawken & Horner, 2003), but expands on it by using peers as mentors, adding a reciprocity component, focusing on prosocial behavior, and targeting socially neglected students. In Study 1, the effectiveness of Nonreciprocal Peer Mentoring was examined, as popular peers served as mentors for neglected peers. In Study 2, neglected or rejected students mentored …

Causes And Consequences Of Conflict : Exploring The Influence Of Honor-Based Norms And Values On The Experience Of Intimate Partner Violence In The United States, Michelle Elaine Pence Jan 2013

Causes And Consequences Of Conflict : Exploring The Influence Of Honor-Based Norms And Values On The Experience Of Intimate Partner Violence In The United States, Michelle Elaine Pence

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The three studies in this dissertation were posed with the common goal of revealing possible explanations for variations in the causes and consequences of interpersonal violence across regional cultures of the United States. Study 1 posed and tested two hypotheses related to the distribution of male-perpetrated intimate partner homicide across regions of the United States. The South and West, two regions characterized in full (the South) or in part (the West) by honor cultures, emerged as the regions with the highest rates of argument- and conflict- related, male-on-female intimate partner homicides in single victim/single offender incidents. Explanations provided at the …

Socially Oriented Negative Self-Referent Cognition : The Development And Validation Of A Measure, Brittany Moree Rudy Jan 2013

Socially Oriented Negative Self-Referent Cognition : The Development And Validation Of A Measure, Brittany Moree Rudy

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Social phobia, a debilitating disorder among children and adolescents, is thought to be made up of cognitive, behavioral, and physiological components. However, in children, the cognitive component of this disorder has been largely neglected by researchers. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to create and validate a new instrument, the "Socially Oriented Negative Anxious Statement (SONAS) scale,” that assesses socially oriented negative self-referent cognition in a younger population. Measurement validation procedures including, reliability, validity, and factor analysis, were utilized to examine the proposed questionnaire. Results indicated that the SONAS scale demonstrated good psychometric properties, including a sound two-factor structure …

Challenging Behaviors In Autism Spectrum Disorders : Differences Across Childhood And The Relationship With Autism Symptomatology, Alison Marie Kozlowski Jan 2013

Challenging Behaviors In Autism Spectrum Disorders : Differences Across Childhood And The Relationship With Autism Symptomatology, Alison Marie Kozlowski

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Challenging behaviors (CBs) are remarkably prevalent in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and can have a number of severe consequences. While it is believed that CBs reach their peak in childhood followed by a general abatement throughout adolescence and adulthood, the exact trend of CBs during childhood is unknown. Furthermore, the impact of changes in autism symptomatology on CBs during childhood has seldom been explored despite a positive correlation between autism symptomatology and CBs having been established. Therefore, the purpose of these studies was to determine where significant differences in both autism symptomatology and CBs occur throughout childhood, and …

Lowbrow Art : The Unlikely Defender Of Art History's Tradition, Joseph R. Givens Jan 2013

Lowbrow Art : The Unlikely Defender Of Art History's Tradition, Joseph R. Givens

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis has as twofold purpose. First, it will show that Lowbrow Art fits into the framework of art history and is worthy of art history’s attention. Second, it will argue for a revalidation of “traditional” art historical methods by proving that the methods are applicable to a marginalized contemporary art movement. Lowbrow Art is one of the most distinctive and vibrant art movements in the world, but there has yet to be a thorough examination of this style. Despite the undeniable worldwide success of the Lowbrow Art movement, it remains relatively obscure in academic discourse. Perhaps one reason why …

Exploratory And Confirmatory Factor Analyses Of The Symptom Structure For Autism Spectrum Disorders Using The Baby And The Infant Screen For Children With Autism Traits, Megan Sipes Jan 2013

Exploratory And Confirmatory Factor Analyses Of The Symptom Structure For Autism Spectrum Disorders Using The Baby And The Infant Screen For Children With Autism Traits, Megan Sipes

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Since autism spectrum disorders (ASD) were first identified, the diagnostic criteria and conceptualization of symptom structure have undergone many revisions. Currently, under the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Fourth Edition-Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR; American Psychiatric Association (APA), 2000), ASD is defined by three symptom categories: impairments in socialization, deficits in communication, and repetitive/restricted behaviors. With the publication of the DSM-5 (APA, 2011), however, ASD will be defined by a two symptom cluster structure in which the main impairments are in the areas of social communication and restricted/repetitive behaviors. With these changes, many assessment measures will need to be re-examined to …

The Art Of Charles H. Reinike : Lagniappes Of Louisiana's Landscapes And People, Lauren J. Barnett

LSU Master's Theses

For Louisiana artist Charles Henry Reinike II, environment acted as a stimulating force and stirred his artistic emotion. Although he began his career in New Orleans during the shock of the Great Depression, Reinike managed to thrive and was a leader in the arts community from the early 1930s until his death in 1983. Although most widely regarded for his watercolors rendered in the plein-air tradition, Reinike worked in an impressively varied range of mediums and excelled in many of them. As a poetic artist, Reinike held great passion for Louisiana, and his lyrical paintings read like odes to the …

Memory For Elements Of A Complex Scene : Binding And The Influence Of Attention, Stephanie L. Martin Jan 2013

Memory For Elements Of A Complex Scene : Binding And The Influence Of Attention, Stephanie L. Martin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Memory of a complex event includes a multitude of features (e.g., objects, people, and actions) as well as the overall context (e.g., going to a picnic). To recall a complex event you must bind together these features and context into an episodic memory representation. This process of binding creates the subjective experience that certain details belong together. In two experiments, I examined whether particular types of information are bound together (object-to-object, object-to-context) within a memory representation of a scene and how attention may influence this process. Participants viewed a series of scenes and their attention was drawn to some objects …

Have they been masked or obscured by the technology used to create …

Family-Related Risk Factors And Their Associations With Behavior Problems Of Children In Foster Care, Jena Leigh Ourso Jan 2013

Family-Related Risk Factors And Their Associations With Behavior Problems Of Children In Foster Care, Jena Leigh Ourso

LSU Master's Theses

Children in foster care are at risk for problems associated with breakdowns in their ecological system. Possible explanations for this may be that children’s daily interactions in early childhood are primarily with their parents. The relationship between child and parent (the dyad) is a crucial part of the way children grow and develop. Past research focuses on the child’s behavior problems as separate and isolated instead of focusing on the behavior problems as a symptom of the dysfunction in the dyad. This study explored the role of two specific risk factors for children in foster care and how these may …

The Relationship Between Forgiveness, Imagined Interactions, Empathy And Relational Satisfaction Among Long-Distance Romantic Couples, Christopher Michael Mapp Jan 2013

The Relationship Between Forgiveness, Imagined Interactions, Empathy And Relational Satisfaction Among Long-Distance Romantic Couples, Christopher Michael Mapp

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Forgiveness is viewed as a major factor in maintaining healthy romantic relationships. But couples involved in long-distance relationships experience a different set of challenges than geographically-close couples when it comes to maintaining and enjoying satisfying and stable relationships. Many long-distance couples rely on increased empathy and intrapersonal communication – in the form of imagined interactions – to release tension, rehearse conversations, and review and analyze conflicts. While forgiveness has been studied extensively in a variety of interpersonal settings, it has not been explicitly studied in relation to the usage of imagined interactions or in maintaining long-distance relationships. Moreover, even though …

How Native American Women Perceive Their Unique Lived Experiences : Three Women Tell Their Stories, Marjorie Larson Kopacsi Jan 2013

How Native American Women Perceive Their Unique Lived Experiences : Three Women Tell Their Stories, Marjorie Larson Kopacsi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

ABSTRACT Qualitative research that explores and further examines the lived experiences of Native American women is an important, yet a frequently neglected, part of the history of the United States (US). This is an important avenue of investigation, as historians have traditionally marginalized many groups within U.S. society, including women and groups that can be viewed as part of the fabric of U.S. culture, yet exist as subcultures. Native Americans (indigenous peoples, ‘Indians’) should share a special place within U.S. society as First Americans; however, qualitative studies of Native American women, offered through a feminist lens as keepers of tradition …

Toward Digitizing The Human Experience : A New Resource For Natural Language Processing, Jerry Scott Weltman Jan 2013

Toward Digitizing The Human Experience : A New Resource For Natural Language Processing, Jerry Scott Weltman

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A long-standing goal of Artificial Intelligence is to program computers that understand natural language. A basic obstacle is that computers lack the common sense that even small children acquire simply by experiencing life, and no one has devised a way to program this experience into a computer. This dissertation presents a methodology and proof-of-concept software system that enables non-experts, with some training, to create simple experiences. For the purposes of this dissertation, an experience is a series of time-ordered comic frames, annotated with the changing intentional and physical states of the characters and objects in each frame. Each frame represents …

Fulcrum Of The Union: The Border South And The Secession Crisis, 1859-1861, Michael Dudley Robinson Jan 2013

Fulcrum Of The Union: The Border South And The Secession Crisis, 1859-1861, Michael Dudley Robinson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Border South states of Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri spurned secession in 1860-61, which has led scholars to conclude that these four slaveholding states were safely ensconced in the Union column from the beginning of the crisis that drew the other slaveholding states into the Confederacy. Historians have often simplified the secession crisis in the Border South, minimizing the likelihood that these states with smaller concentrations of enslaved persons and a more diversified economy and society than the Upper and Lower South would ever leave the Union. This work seeks to add contingency to the story of the Border …

Effects Of A Brief Mindfulness Intervention On Negative Affect And Urge To Drink Among College Student Drinkers, Christine Vinci Jan 2013

Effects Of A Brief Mindfulness Intervention On Negative Affect And Urge To Drink Among College Student Drinkers, Christine Vinci

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Problematic college student drinking can predict the subsequent development of severe alcohol use patterns. Several theories have proposed that negative affect (NA) plays a large role in the maintenance of substance use behaviors – a phenomenon supported in laboratory-based and clinical studies. It has been demonstrated that mindfulness meditation can improve the regulation of NA, suggesting that mindfulness may be very beneficial in treating problematic substance use behavior. The present study utilized a brief mindfulness intervention, followed by a NA mood induction in a sample of college student problematic drinkers (N = 207). A three by two by three factorial …

Melancholic Epistolarity : Letters And Traumatic Exile In The Novels Of Three Francophone Women, Rosemary Harrington Courville Jan 2013

Melancholic Epistolarity : Letters And Traumatic Exile In The Novels Of Three Francophone Women, Rosemary Harrington Courville

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In her 1982 groundbreaking work on the epistolary form in novels, Janet Gurkin Altman gives a working definition of epistolarity which will be a guiding concept for this project; she defines it simply as: “the use of the letter’s formal properties to create meaning…” (Altman 4). Of course, to create meaning is a complicated endeavor. How does one create meaning from the letter’s formal properties? The contemporary authors who engage with epistolarity do so on several levels from the thematic to the structural. From novels that have several characters engaging in letter dialogues to one-sided exchanges that bear more resemblance …

Effect Of Bitterness Blockers And Salt Substitutes On The Quality Of Low Sodium White Cheddar Cheese, Kennet Mariano Carabante Jan 2013

Effect Of Bitterness Blockers And Salt Substitutes On The Quality Of Low Sodium White Cheddar Cheese, Kennet Mariano Carabante

LSU Master's Theses

Reducing added salt in processed foods is one of the major challenges facing food industry worldwide. Salt (NaCl) replacement in a Cheddar cheese has been successfully achieved up to 25%, which qualifies it as “reduced sodium”. However, a low sodium cheddar cheese (less than 140 mg Na/ 50 g cheese) requires at least 50% of salt reduction. Bitterness is one obstacle for development of an acceptable low sodium cheddar cheese. In this study, sensory optimization of low sodium white cheddar cheese was performed. A 3-component mixture design was used: NaCl (30-60%), KCl (45-65%) and glycine (5-10%). A fixed level of …
