Lakoff’S Theory Of Moral Reasoning In Presidential Campaign Advertisements, 1952–2012, Damien S. Pfister, Jessy J. Ohl, Marty Nader, Dana Griffin

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This study examines the presence and distribution of George Lakoff’s Strict Father and Nurturant Parent paradigms of moral reasoning in presidential campaign advertisements between 1952 and 2012. Results show that Republicans outpace Democrats in the general use of moral reasoning and that Republicans are far more likely to use Strict Father language than Democrats. The study found no difference in the use of Strict Father= Nurturant Parent morality throughout history, during times of war and recession, or if the candidate was an incumbent. The Strict Father and Nurturant Parent models of moral reasoning were also evaluated based on their relationship …

Awareness And Usage Of Collaboration And Communication Technologies In Student Teamwork , Manouchehr Tabatabaei, Marco Lam Nov 2013

Awareness And Usage Of Collaboration And Communication Technologies In Student Teamwork , Manouchehr Tabatabaei, Marco Lam

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

In this study, we investigate students’ awareness and usage of collaboration and communication technologies (CCTs). Coordination and communication are two of the key processes for effective teamwork that have been identified in the literature. We find significant differences in awareness of CCTs between various student groups. However, when controlling for awareness, we find no difference in usage. While the proportion of students that are aware of various CCTs is high, the reported usage of CCTs is low. Because of the increased emphasis on teamwork, students need to be taught the technologies they need to use for collaboration and communication in …

A Place For Mindfulness In Successful Addiction Recovery, Susannah Eckman

CwiC-PH

The difficulties that women face during substance abuse recovery and re-integration into society after incarceration are staggering in number and combined severity. Over the last several decades, a substantial body of research has investigated the psychological, neurobiological, and public health aspects of the actual experience – as well as the sustained perception of – resource depletion that everyday life in low-income communities creates. The tide of research is now headed towards evaluating new treatment strategies that respond to the understanding gained from this research. Mindfulness Training (MT) is one strategy that promises particular efficacy in addressing the root of these …

A new kind of evidence is making its way to America's courts. Social media posts and text messages are surfacing in trials across the country, and the cases so far represent just the tip of the technological iceberg.' The potential enormity of the emerging evidentiary phenomenon is apparent in the changing habits of our own lives. Many of us, particularly those under thirty, constantly transmit observations and impressions through text messages and social media sites, no matter where we are and what we are (supposed to be) doing.' As "smartphone" ownership expands and younger adults-who al- ready average over 100 …

Mate Preferences Do Predict Attraction And Choices In The Early Stages Of Mate Selection, Norman P. Li, Jose C. Yong, William Tov, Oliver Sng, Garth J. O. Fletcher, Katherine A. Valentine, Yun F. Jiang, Daniel Balliet Nov 2013

Mate Preferences Do Predict Attraction And Choices In The Early Stages Of Mate Selection, Norman P. Li, Jose C. Yong, William Tov, Oliver Sng, Garth J. O. Fletcher, Katherine A. Valentine, Yun F. Jiang, Daniel Balliet

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Although mate preference research has firmly established that men value physical attractiveness more than women do and women value social status more than men do, recent speed-dating studies have indicated mixed evidence (at best) for whether people’s sex-differentiated mate preferences predict actual mate choices. According to an evolutionary, mate preference priority model (Li, Bailey, Kenrick, & Linsenmeier, 2002; Li & KENRICK, 2006; Li, Valentine, & Patel, 2011), the sexes are largely similar in what they ideally like, but for long-term mates, they should differ on what they most want to avoid in early selection contexts. Following this model, we conducted …

How Much Is That Lawsuit In The Window? Pricing Legal Claims, Maya Steinitz Nov 2013

How Much Is That Lawsuit In The Window? Pricing Legal Claims, Maya Steinitz

Vanderbilt Law Review

Assessing the value of legal claims is the sixty-four thousand dollar question (no pun intended) of civil litigation. Clients, as every litigator knows, often come into their attorneys' offices with a belief that they know how much their claim is worth. The attorney is then asked to validate that number. Alternately, clients can come to their attorneys with a grievance-I have been injured, a counter-party breached its contract with me, I have been fired, our rainforest has been devastated by a mining company-and ask the attorney for an assessment of how much their grievance might be worth. Contingency lawyers, who …

Comparison Of Three Angle Of Attack (Aoa) Indicators: A Usability Study, Camilo Jimenez Nov 2013

Comparison Of Three Angle Of Attack (Aoa) Indicators: A Usability Study, Camilo Jimenez

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Angle of Attack (AOA) is an important aeronautical concept used to understand the performance status of an aircraft during different flight stages. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has indicated the importance of developing and encouraging the use of affordable AOA based systems to increase inflight safety. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's flight department decided to install AOA indicators in its fleet of Cessna 172S, to increase safety and to help student pilots better understand this important concept. This paper presents a review of AOA, visual display design principles, and usability. This experimental study examined three different AOA indicators provided by the …

Critical Success Factors Relating To The Adoption Of Xbrl In Saudi Arabia, Awni Rawashdeh, Mohamad Hisyam Selamat Nov 2013

Critical Success Factors Relating To The Adoption Of Xbrl In Saudi Arabia, Awni Rawashdeh, Mohamad Hisyam Selamat

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

The aim of this paper is to examine the various normative, attitudinal and control factors influencing the adopters’ intention to accept XBRL in Saudi Arabia. Based on the empirical data collected by using a self-administered questionnaire relating to the normative, attitudinal and control variables, this research analysis provides evidence regarding the perceived ease of use, perceived relative advantage, perceived compatibility, social influence, perceived knowledge, and Internet skills to significantly explain the behavioral intentions towards the adoption of XBRL. However, perceived usefulness, perceived complexity and perceived training were found to have no significance in this research. The two-fold significance of this …

Early Career Change Among Millennial Us College Graduates, Gina Sian Nov 2013

Early Career Change Among Millennial Us College Graduates, Gina Sian

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

With employers reporting high turnover among millennial employees, there is a need for better understanding of employment characteristics of this generation of workers. By analyzing the job history of 1,000 American millennials who participated in the National Longitudinal Survey of the Youth, this study found that 26% of millennial US college graduates changed careers within the first five years after obtaining their degree, but no more than past generations when they were young. Analysis also found that flexibility and optimism are not significant predictors of early career change but openness to risk has a strong positive association with early career …

Identity In Flux: Cinematic Destabilization In Narrative And Form, Eli Steenlage Nov 2013

Identity In Flux: Cinematic Destabilization In Narrative And Form, Eli Steenlage

College of Communication Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the current transitional moment in culture as cinema, identity, and a mediated society interact in a state of flux. My film project, Photostoria, was produced to addresses issues of memory, history, and identity in a digital, socially networked age, through the relationships of the characters/actors and through cinema's unique aesthetic language. The film uses a convergence and remediation of media to reflect the confusion and destabilization of identity formation in cultural terms. Specifically, time travel narratives create a metaphor for the experience of displacement in a hypermediated society. Photostoria is analyzed by way of narrative theory, new …

Acqui-Hiring, Gregg D. Polsky, John F. Coyle Nov 2013

Acqui-Hiring, Gregg D. Polsky, John F. Coyle

Scholarly Works

Facebook, Google, and other leading technology companies in Silicon Valley have been buying start-up companies at a brisk pace. In many of these transactions, the buyer has little interest in acquiring the startup’s projects or assets. Instead, the buyer’s primary motivation is to hire some or all of the startup’s software engineers. These so-called “acqui-hires” represent a novel — and increasingly common — tool by which the largest and most successful technology companies in the world satisfy their intense demand for engineering talent.

To date, the acqui-hire has attracted no attention in the academic or professional legal literature. With this …

Educational Campaign For Improving Pedestrian Safety: A University Campus Study, Yu Zhang, Makarand Gawade, Pei-Sung Lin, Trenda Mcpherson

CUTR Faculty Journal Publications

Florida is the state with the highest pedestrian fatality rate per unit population in the U.S. In addition to engineering countermeasures, educational efforts directed to pedestrians and other road users are equally important for improving pedestrian safety. To explore educational formats and identify effective educational methods, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) sponsored a pilot program called “Bulls Walk and Bike Week Campaign” on the Tampa campus of the University of South Florida (USF). A before-and-after comparison study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of this campaign. In the study, observational surveys and a questionnaire survey were conducted to compare …

Teaching Behaviour And Well-Being In Students : Development And Concurrent Validity Of An Instrument To Measure Student-Reported Teaching Behaviour., Patrick Possel, Kathleen Moritz Rudasill, Jill L. Adelson, Annie C. Bjerg, Don T. Wooldridge, Stephanie Winkeljohn Black Nov 2013

Wooldridge, Stephanie Winkeljohn Black

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Teaching behavior has important implications for students’ emotional well-being. Multiple models suggest students’ perceptions of teaching behaviors are more critical than other measures for predicting well-being, yet student-report instruments that measure concrete and specific teaching behavior are limited. The purpose of the present studies is to develop an instrument to assess students’ perceptions of concrete and specific teaching behavior and to test which teaching behavior is associated students’ well-being. Construct validity and internal consistency for the 37-item Teaching Behavior Questionnaire (TBQ-S), composed of instructional, negative teaching, socioemotional, and organizational behavior were examined using data from two independent samples (Study 1: …

Duty In The Litigation-Investment Agreement: The Choice Between Tort And Contract Norms When The Deal Breaks Down, Anthony J. Sebok, W. Bradley Wendel Nov 2013

Duty In The Litigation-Investment Agreement: The Choice Between Tort And Contract Norms When The Deal Breaks Down, Anthony J. Sebok, W. Bradley Wendel

Articles

The article proposes a framework for regulating commercial litigation investment by drawing analogies to existing legal norms in similar economic activities. It argues that contract law, rather than tort law, is better suited to address the risks and challenges inherent in this growing market. The analysis emphasizes the importance of aligning legal norms with the economic realities of litigation investment, particularly in the commercial sector, where the stakes and dynamics differ significantly from consumer litigation. The authors advocate for a regulatory approach that balances protection against opportunism with the need to maintain efficient outcomes.
